COLUMBIA — Services for Azlee Washington Weatherspoon, widow of Ben Weatherspoon, will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday at St. John Baptist Church; burial: church cemetery; visitation 1-7 tonight at Greater Columbia Funeral Service. She died Oct. 19, 2004. She was reared by Sam and Patsy Gibbs. She attended Greenlawn Baptist of Huntington, N.Y. Surviving are son, Leroy; grandchildren; relatives and friends.

MONCKS CORNER — Services for Laura Washington will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday (viewing 3-8 p.m. today) at Gethers Funeral Home, burial in Westview Cemetery. She was born in Berkeley Co. to George and Evelena Washington . Surviving: children, Alexander, Jerome and Cesara Washington , Latoya White; siblings, Elenora Haynes, Wesley, Harold, Vernor and Thomas Washington , Sarah Dixon.

Anthony Vaughn

BLACKSTOCK — Services for Anthony Davis Vaughn, 1, are 11 a.m. Saturday (10 a.m. visitation) at Saluda Street Church of God with burial in Chester Memorial Gardens. Barron Funeral Home, Chester, is in charge. Born in Rock Hill to Michael and Sherry Bynum Vaughn, he died Oct. 21, 2004. Surviving are his parents; sister, Monica Vaughn; grandparents, Edward and Doris Wilson, Winfred and Elaine Bynum.

Robert Thompson

WEST COLUMBIA — Services for Robert “Bob” Lee Thompson, Sr., 83, of West Columbia, will be held at 11 am Saturday, October 23, 2004 in Springdale Baptist Church, officiated by Rev. Tommy McGill. Pallbearers will be Richard Hall, Carter Brown, Harold Tompkins, Andy Thompson, Billy Coleman and Roger Stafford. Honorary pallbearers will be the Lonnie Shull Sunday School Class. Burial, with military rites, will follow at Celestial Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 6-8 pm Friday at Thompson Funeral Home of West Columbia. Memorials may be made to Ascension Hospice, 226 State St., W. Columbia, SC 29169 or to Springdale Baptist Church.

Mr. Thompson, husband of Patsy Tripp Thompson, died Tuesday, October 19, 2004. Born in Gastonia, NC, he was the son of the late Fred H. and Rena Huffman Thompson, Sr. Mr. Thompson was a member and lifetime Deacon at Springdale Baptist Church, and the Lonnie Shull Sunday School Class. He was retired from Daniel’s Construction. Mr. Thompson served in the Navy during WW II in the Battle of Iwo Jima. He was also on board the USS Missouri during the surrender of the Japanese with General McArthur.

Surviving, besides his wife, are daughters and sons-in-law, Cindy and Billy Coleman of Marion, Susan and Danny Burroughs of Gaston, Patricia and Roger Stafford of West Columbia; sons and daughters-in-law, Billy and Debbie Brown of Columbia, Bobby and Cindy Thompson of West Columbia; sister, Diane Rippy of West Columbia; eleven grandchildren; and five great grandchildren.

Mr. Thompson was predeceased by three brothers, James Thompson, Fred H. Thompson, Jr., and Bill Thompson.

Lorenzo Taylor

KERSHAW — Funeral services for Lorenzo Charles (Larry) Taylor, age 57, will be held, Saturday, October 23, 2004, at 2:00 pm in Baker Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in the Forest Lawn Memorial Park, Camden, SC. Rev. Doug Humphries and Mr. Bud Mann will officiate.

Born in Kershaw, SC, he was the son of the late James Ansel and Hazel Anderson Taylor. Mr. Taylor died, Wednesday, October 20, 2004, at his home. Mr. Taylor was a skilled carpenter, a member of Abney Masonic Lodge #211 which will provide Masonic rites at the graveside service, a U.S. Navy veteran, and a member of Timrod Baptist Church.

Surviving are his wife of 16 years, Bobbie Truesdale Taylor, of the home, a daughter, Charlene Taylor, of Boston, MASS., 2 sons, Lorenzo C. Taylor, Jr. and Paul Taylor, both of Boston, MASS., 3 step-sons, William Josh Roberts, II, of Bluffton, SC, Ben Foster Roberts and Robert E. Roberts, both of Shelby, NC, 3 sisters, Lavetta Stryjewski, of Flora City, FLA., Iris Taylor Seinkner, of Ormand Beach, FLA., and Natalie Truesdale, of Kershaw, SC, 1 brother, Everette O. Taylor, Bethune, SC, 2 grandchildren, Nathan and L.T., both of Boston, MASS., 9 step-grandchildren, Logan, of Apex, NC, Brandon, Colette, Clarissa, Daniel, Matthew, and Jordan, all of Shelby, NC, Selena and Lindsay, both of Hilton Head, SC. He was predeceased by 2 sisters, Eleanor Hill and Clarice H. Wallace, and 3 brothers, Hilbert, Joe and Jim Taylor.

The Taylor family will receive friends, Friday, October, 22, 2004 from 7 to 9 pm at Baker Funeral Home.

Memorial contributions in Mr. Taylor’s memory may be made to the Shriner’s Hospital for Children, 950 West Faris Road, Greenville, SC 29605 or Hospice of Lancaster, 902 West Meeting Street, Suite A, Lancaster, SC 29720.

David Still

HILDA — David Lavant Still, 66, died Thursday, October 21, 2004 at his home after a brief illness.

Born in Bamberg County, he was the son of the late James Guy and Louise Ward Still. He was a former employee of Holland Hitch, Inc. and a member of Hilda Southern Methodist Church.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Hilda Southern Methodist Church with burial to follow in the church cemetery. Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. Friday evening at Mole Funeral Home.

Survivors include son, Donnie Still of Blackville, SC; brothers, James Harry “Tater” Still of Williston, SC, William Henry Still of Olar, SC; sisters, Flora Lee Hutto of Hilda, SC, Hazel Schafer of Olar, SC, Ruth Godbold of Bamberg, SC; grandchildren.

Brenda Steen

LANCASTER — Services for Brenda Steen, 36, 2 p.m. today at Lynwood Drive Church of God, where she was a member; burial: Lancaster Memorial Park. Mahaffey Funeral Home is in charge. Born in Lancaster to James and Shelby Jenkins Steen, she was employed by Diversco. Surviving are children, Amber Cauthen, Bryan Jenkins; parents; siblings, Edward Steen, Patricia Lester; grandmother, Wincy Steen.

David Shepherd Sr.

BLYTHEWOOD — Graveside service, with full military honors, for Sgt David Stephen Shepherd, Sr. US Army (Ret.) 68, of Blythewood, will be held 3 o’clock, Saturday, October 23, 2004 in Shepherd Cemetery, 120 Rimer Pond Road, Blythewood. The family will receive family and friends from 5 until 7 o’clock this Friday evening at Shives Funeral Home. Memorial may be made to VFW, 605 Lady Street, Columbia, SC 29201

Mr. Shepherd died, October 21, 2004. Born in Columbus, Ohio, he was a son of Clifton Raymond Shepherd and Effie Werts Shepherd. Mr. Shepherd served in the US Army during the Vietnam conflict. After his long and proud military service, Mr. Shepherd worked for B&W Lumber for five years followed by a position as Security Officer with Richland Memorial Hospital for seven years. He loved God, the American way of life and his dog, Chester.

Survivors include his wife of 43 years, Viola B. Shepherd, daughters; Mary Shepherd of Blythewood, Cheryl Shepherd of Charlotte, NC, Shirley Shepherd of Lexington, Holley Gable and husband, Phillip of Red Bank, and Patricia Brewster of Elgin, son; David S. Shepherd, Jr. and wife, Susan, of Blythewood, 13 grandchildren and two great grandchildren, his sister, Nellie Smedley of Springfield, OH. Mr. Shepherd was preceded in death by his sisters, Grace Wolfe and Loretta Mae Carter and his brothers, Gordon William Shepherd and Rawlin G. Shepherd.

Catherine Reid

COLUMBIA — Services for Mrs. Catherine Shuford Reid, of 428 Easter St., will be held noon Saturday at Northminster Presbyterian Church. Interment will be held at Salisbury National Cemetery, Salisbury, NC. Visitation is 7 pm today at Palmer Memorial Chapel.

Mrs. Reid died Wednesday, October 20, 2004. Born in Granite Quarry, NC, she was the daughter of the late Artis C. and Mamie Gibson Shuford. She was a graduate of Granite Quarry High School and received a Bachelors of Science degree from NC Central University, Durham, NC. She began her Christian experience at White Rock AME Zion Church, Granite Quarry, NC and after establishing her home in Columbia, SC, she united with Northminster Presbyterian Church, USA, where she was a deacon and a member of the Anniversary committee. She was a member of the Beta Beta Zeta Chapter of the Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. She served as an executive committee member and president of the Palmetto Medical, Dental and Pharmaceutical Association Auxiliary.

Surviving are her devoted husband, Dr. Albert L. Reid; her son, Dr. Rodney R. (Dr. Tanya) Reid and her daughter, Dr. Yolanda Reid (Henry) Hunter, both of Blythewood, SC; seven grandchildren, Robert, Patrick, Reid, Rachel, Payton, Nolan and Ryan; a sister, Ivester S. Morgan of Granite Quarry, NC; and a host of other loving relatives and friends.

Helen Polatty

SALUDA — Helen Crouch Polatty, 88, of 834 Old Chappells Ferry Road, died Tuesday, October 19, 2004, in Saluda Nursing Center.

Born in Saluda, she was the daughter of the late John Crouch and the late Hope Deloche Crouch. She was the wife of the late James. W. Polatty Sr. Mrs. Polatty was a homemaker. She was a member of Good Hope Baptist Church, Good Hope Creepers and Senior Ladies Sunday School Class.

Surviving is her son and daughter-in-law, James W. “Jim” and De Lis Melton Polatty of Conway; grandson and granddaughter-in-law, Frederick “Rick” and Leslie Polatty of Conway; great-grandson, Andrew “Drew” Polatty of Conway.

A brother, David Crouch, and two sisters, Mamie Marett and Alma Boatwright, preceded Mrs. Polatty in death.

Graveside service will be 11 a.m. Friday, October 22, 2004, at Mayson Memorial Cemetery with the Rev. Steve Justice officiating. The family will receive friends after the service in the social hall.

Memorials may be made to Good Hope Baptist Church Building Fund, 1738 Greenwood Hwy., Saluda, SC 29138.

Marie Outlaw

CASSATT — Funeral services for Marie Holland Outlaw, age 54, who died Oct. 21, will be held Saturday at 2:00 from the Harmony Baptist Church. Burial will be in the church Cemetery, directed by Norton Funeral Home, Bishopville Chapel. Visitation will be Friday 6-8 pm at the funeral home.

Mrs. Outlaw was born in Kershaw Co., a daughter of Clara Douglas Holland Croft and the late Sidney Holland, Sr. She was a member of the First Assembly of God in Camden.

Surviving are her mother of Sumter; sons: Harold, Jeff, & Steve Hatcher, Camden; stepson: Stanley E. Outlaw, Kershaw; stepdaughters: Rhonda Spradley, McBee, Tiffni Outlaw, Lexington; sisters: Lee Tyler & Carolyn Peach, Sumter; brother: Johnny Holland Sumter; 4 grandchildren.

James O’Connor

NORTH AUGUSTA — A memorial service for James Neil O’Connor, 47, will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Rowland Funeral Home. Born in Trenton, N.J., he died October 20, 2004. He had lived in North Augusta for most of his life and was a painter. Surviving are his wife, Deborah Gay O’Connor; children, Michael, Jessica and Bridget Hurley, Amber O’Connor; brothers, David and Michael O’Connor.

Katura Neel

SILVERSTREET — Katura Abrams Neel, 89, formerly of 24405 Highway 34, Silverstreet, widow of Richard C. Neel, Jr., died Thursday, October 21, 2004 at White Oak Manor.

Mrs. Neel was born on September 20, 1915, a daughter of the late Claude Edward and Nancy Ellen Paysinger Abrams. She was a homemaker, Assistant Post Master for Silverstreet Post Office, a member of Silverstreet Evangelical Lutheran Church, and the Elsie P. Nichols Circle. She was a member of the Silverstreet Ruritan Club, the Silverstreet FCL, the Silverstreet Leisure Club, and the Silverstreet Alumni Association. She was a former Sunday School teacher.

Mrs. Neel is survived by one daughter and son-in-law; LuEllen N. and Douglas M. Robertson of Bluffton, one son and daughter-in-law; Richard (Dick) C. and Anne B. Neel, III of Silverstreet, two sisters; Claudia Sheppard and Shirley A. Berry, both of Silverstreet, four grandchildren, Pamela Murk of Mt. Pleasant, Nan Loadholdt of Irmo, Clark Neel of Silverstreet, Harold B. Neel of Greer, and eight great grandchildren. She was predeceased by one sister, Sara A. Inabinet and one brother, Cyril Edward Abrams.

Funeral services for Katura Abrams Neel will be conducted at 1:00 P.M. Saturday at Silverstreet Lutheran Church by the Rev. Steve Jackson. Interment will be in Rosemont Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 7:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. Friday at the Whitaker Funeral Home.

Memorials may be made to Silverstreet Lutheran Church, PO Box 48, Silverstreet, SC 29145.

Active pallbearers will be Clark Neel, Harold B. Neel, Eddie Abrams, Russell Abrams, Wayne Sheppard, Michael Sheppard, and Bill Hillman.

Honorary pallbearers will be the Elsie P. Nichols Sunday School Class of Silverstreet Lutheran Church and Silverstreet Leisure Club.

Whitaker Funeral Home, 1704 College Street, Newberry, SC is assisting the family.

Thomas Morrow Jr.

COLUMBIA — Funeral service for Mr. Thomas Alexander Morrow, 79, will be held at four o’clock Saturday, October 23, 2004 in Temple Baptist Church. Interment will follow in Crescent Hill Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at the church from three o’clock until the time of the service. Serving as honorary pallbearers will be members of the Fellowship Sunday School Class. Memorials may be made to Temple Baptist Church, 806 Universal Drive, Columbia, SC 29209.

Mr. Morrow died Thursday, October 21, 2004 in Hendersonville, NC. Born in Richland County, SC, he was a son of the late Thomas A. and Pluma Virginia Haithcock Morrow. Mr. Morrow resided in Columbia for most of his life and retired from Loxcreen Inc. after 38 years. He was a member of Temple Baptist Church. In later years, he moved to Greenville Care Assisted Living. While living there, he attended Buncombe Road Baptist Church. At the time of his death, he was a resident of The Laurels of Hendersonville, NC.

Survivors include a brother and sister-in-law, Vin D. and Mary Goings Morrow of Sacramento, CA; a number of nieces and nephews to include Steven, Daniel, and Margaret Parker, Larry Morrow and Wanda Ferra and several grand nieces and nephews. Also cousins to include Rebecca Frodl, Gary Haithcock, and Maxine Wagstaff. Two sisters, Ethel Morrow and Elizabeth Morrow Parker, preceded him in death.
