ENOCH LONDON

Funeral services for Enoch London, 88, were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, March 24, 2002, in Harold L. & Dorothy J. Young Memorial Chapel. Burial was in New Hopewell Baptist Church Cemetery, directed by Young & Young Funeral Home.

Mr. London died Thursday, March 21, after an illness. He was born in Darlington County on Oct. 16, 1913, a son of the late James and Beersheba Joyner London. Mr. London received his education in the public schools of Darlington County. He was a member of New Hopewell Baptist and an Army veteran of World War II.

Surviving are two daughters, Almeta (Willie) Prescott of McBee and Lougenia (Walter) Hendrix of Darlington; a son, James London of Atlanta, Ga.; five sisters, Bessie (Arthur) Thomas of Darlington, Lottie McPhail of Society Hill, Beersheba Rhodes, Delia McPhail and Georgianna London, all of Ansonia, Conn.; grandchildren and great-grandchildren; a daughter-in-law; three sons-in-law; and a host of nieces, nephews and other close relatives and friends.

DR. PAUL T. DAVIS

DARLINGTON– Graveside funeral services for Dr. Paul Thomas Davis, 62, were held at 3 p.m. Sunday, March 24, 2002, in Pine Grove United Methodist Church Cemetery, directed by Belk Funeral Home.

Dr. Davis died Thursday evening, March 21, in a Florence hospital after an illness. He was born in Darlington County, the son of the late Otta and Pauline Anderson Davis. He was a graduate of St. John's High School in Darlington in 1958 where he played football, basketball, baseball and track. He then attended North Carolina State University on a football scholarship and later transferred to Wofford College where he continued his football career and graduated in 1963. Dr. Davis went on to graduate from the Medical University of South Carolina in 1967. He completed an ear, nose and throat residency in Charleston and a fellowship in facial plastic surgery in Sacramento, Calif. Dr. Davis was also a captain in the U.S. Air Force where he served as a flight surgeon. He was a fellow of the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery where he also served as a fellowship director and was a member of its Founder's Club. Dr. Davis also served as president of the South Carolina Golf Association and has been a board member for several years. He also served as president of Florence Country Club for seven years. Dr. Davis was a member of Pine Grove United Methodist Church.

Surviving family members include, Dr. Graycie P. Davis of Charleston, Dr. Paul T., Tabatha and Haley Cala Davis of Mt. Pleasant; Kathleen L. "Kati" Davis of Florence; Dr. Otto A. "Toby" Davis of Pittsburgh, Pa.; Marianne D. Murphy of Sumter; Carole D. Davis of Florence; and a dear friend, Dr. Carla Graham of Darlington.

Memorials may be made to Pine Grove United Methodist Church, c/o Terry Beckom, 2635 S. Center Rd., Timmonsville, SC 29161 or to the charity of one's choice.

WALTER C. WILEY

DARLINGTON – A graveside service for Walter Carlton Wiley, 76, was held at 4 p.m. on Friday, March 22, 2002, in Black Creek Cemetery, directed by Kistler-Hardee Funeral Home.

Mr. Wiley died Wednesday, March 20, in a Florence hospital after an illness. He was born in Toccoa, Ga., and was the son of the late Paris Wider and Mary Etta Scott Wiley. He was the owner of Walt's Wholesale for 25 years and attended Black Creek Baptist Church. Mr. Wiley enjoyed watching ball games.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 45 years, Billie Wiley, in 1993.

Survivors include three sons, Tim (Lisa) Wiley of Darlington, Ray (Carolyne) Wiley of Lewisburg, W.V., and Carlton (Kim) Wiley of Florence; four daughters, Tammy (Tommy) Riggins of Trinity, N.C., Robin (Ronnie) Brown, Michelle (Troy) Byrd and Kim (Allen) Ritch, all of Florence; two step-children, Deborah Mosley and Ricky Holbrook; two sisters, Mary (Monroe) Waldon and JoAnn (Jimmy) West, both of Archdale, N.C.; 17 grandchildren, Luke, Taylor, Craig, Meagan, Dusty, Jessica, Jarrod, India, Cody, Blair, Gage, Kelly, Sharon, Kristi, Mishi, Rebecca and Jonah; four great-grandchildren, Sean, Logan, Brooks and Alex; and his companion, Barbara Tadlock of Darlington.

RUTH ADAMS MIMS

Funeral services for Ruth Adams Mims, 77, will be held at 10:30 a.m. today, Friday, March 22, 2002, at St Luke United Methodist Church. The Revs. Ben and Dora Gafford will officiate with burial at 11:30 in Magnolia Cemetery directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to St. Luke United Methodist Church, 302 Dunlap Dr., Hartsville, SC 29550 or the charity of one's choice.

Mrs. Mims, widow of Carrol M. Adams and James A. Mims Sr., died Tuesday, March 19, 2002. Born in Marlboro County, she was a daughter of the late Percy P. and Lizzie Pope Pearce. She was a charter member of St. Luke United Methodist Church, Ladies Fellowship Class, the XYZ Club, Mary Anne McCulloch Circle, and the "Each One - Teach One" Reading Program of Darlington County. She was a former Sunday School superintendent, a former secretary at St. Luke United Methodist Church, and she delivered Meals On Wheels for eight years.

Surviving are her son and daughter-in-law, Dennis C. and Joan Adams of Charlotte, N.C.; daughter and son-in-law, Iris A. and Jimmy McFarland of Hartsville; sisters, Rosie Bouchard of Jupiter, Fla., Liz Greb-Lasky of Bennettsville; step-sons and step-daughters-in-law, Allen and Lydia Mims of Memphis, Tenn., Ronald and Fran Mims of Surfside Beach; grandchildren and spouses, J. Coty and Carla McFarland of Cleveland, Tenn., Karen M. and Craig Giles of Lexington, Debra M. and Tommy Vernon of Greenville, N.C., Meredith Adams of Charlotte, N.C., Benjamin Adams of Charlotte, N.C.; step-grandchildren, Lee Mims of Surfside Beach, Alexandra Mims of Memphis, Tenn.; great-grandchildren, Colton Giles, Noah Giles, Tanner Giles, Tom King, McClain Vernon, Anna McFarland, and Luke McFarland.

LILLIE CARPENTER

Funeral services for Lillie Mae Carpenter, 64, will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 23, 2002, at First Church of the Nazarene. The Revs. Ted Windham and Daryl Bogotay will officiate with burial in Magnolia Cemetery directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home. The family will receive friends Friday, March 22, from 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Mrs. Carpenter died Wednesday, March 20, 2002. Born in Darlington County, she was a daughter of the late Lawrence David and Alberta Howle Smith. She was a member of First Church of the Nazarene.

Surviving are her husband, Robert Ken Carpenter of Darlington; sons and daughters-in-law, Robert K. and Barbara Carpenter of Greenville, Lawrence R. and Angela Carpenter of Hartsville, Lawrence R. and Dana Carpenter of Hartsville; daughters and son-in-law, Sylvia C. and Ben Robinson of Florence, Rebecca C. Hackley of Lydia; sisters, Elizabeth S. Parnell of Sumter, Sylvia S. Blackmon of Hartsville; 16 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

LENA GIBSON

Funeral services for Lena Blackman Gibson, 91, will be held at 3 p.m. today, Friday, March 22, 2002, at First Baptist Church. The Rev. Dr. Bob Cline will officiate with burial in Magnolia Cemetery directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church Building Fund, 104 East Home Ave., Hartsville SC 29550.

Mrs. Gibson, widow of Alton H. Gibson, died Tuesday, March 19, 2002. Born in Darlington County, she was a daughter of the late Samuel Edward and Sarah Ellis Blackman. She was a member of First Baptist Church, an Avon representative for 51 years, and was a kind and wonderful loving mother.

Surviving are her sons and daughters-in-law, Philip and Mary Gibson of Effingham, Lyndal and Michele Gibson of Plano, Texas , Sammy and Pat Gibson of Hartsville; daughter and son-in-law, Sarah and Pat Hannan of Kansas City, Mo.; grandchildren, Dawn "Dolly" Patton, Jonathan Gibson, Harry Engel, Danny Engel, Patricia Gelsky, Lee Gibson, Beth Campbell, Bill Harrigan, Elizabeth Harrigan; 13 great-grandchildren. A grandchild, Tommy Harrigan, predeceased her.

ALENE T. JOHNSON

Services for Alene Tyner Johnson, 81, widow of Dargan Johnson, who died March 20, 2002, will be held today, Friday, March 22, 2002, at 2 p.m. at the First Baptist Church of Pine Ridge. The Revs. Billy Campbell and Jackie Hinson will officiate. Burial will be in the church Cemetery, directed by Norton Funeral Home. Mrs. Johnson was born in Darlington County, a daughter of the late Claude William & Effie Cassidy Tyner. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Pine Ridge.

Surviving are daughters, Trilby J. (James Crowley) Hall of Hartsville, and Sandra (Bruce) Bowers of Winston-Salem, N.C.; son, Dargan Van (Joy) Johnson of Hartsville; sisters, Margaret Smith and Doris Johnson, both of Hartsville; brothers, Gary and Sidney Tyner, both of Hartsville; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to the Lake Robinson Rescue Squad, 3849 W. BoBo Newsome Highway, Hartsville, SC 29550.

PEARL SMITH BROWN

Funeral services for Pearl Smith Brown, 83, will be held at 5 p.m. Saturday, March 23, 2002, at Tabernacle United Methodist Church. The Revs. Phillip Watry and Tommy Browne will officiate with burial in Tabernacle United Methodist Church directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to Tabernacle Building Fund, c/o Franklin Brown, Route 1, Box 499, McBee, SC 29101. The family will receive friends Friday, March 22, from 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Mrs. Brown, widow of Drew Thomas Brown, died Wednesday, March 20. Born in Darlington County, she was a daughter of the late Cleveland Columbus and Ava Mangum Smith.

Surviving are her sons and daughters-in-law, Laverne and Miriam Brown of McBee, Jerry and Linda Brown of Hartsville, Dexter Brown of Hartsville,; daughters and son-in-law, Avie and Melvin Kirven of Hartsville, Frances Alexander and Janice Evans, both of Hartsville; sister, Ruby Jacobs of Hartsville; 17 grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren. She was predeceased by her daughter, Lula Mae King; sons-in-law, Cecil King and Marvin Evans; grandson, Larry "Mitchell" Brigman, II.
