SADIE KELLY

Graveside services for Sadie Lou Garland Kelly, 66, were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, March 17, 2002, in Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church Cemetery. The Rev. Carroll Pope officiated with Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home is in charge.

Mrs. Kelly died Wednesday, March 13, 2002. Born in Darlington County, she was a daughter of Lula Brown Garland and the late D. G. Garland, Sr.

Surviving are her husband, Paul Kelly of Hartsville; son, Scott Kelly of Hartsville; adopted daughter and special friend, Peggy Norman of Patrick; mother of Hartsville; brothers, Steve Garland of Hueytown, Ala., D.G. Garland Jr. of Atlanta, Ga.; sisters, Sybil Kelly and Patricia Wilkes, both of Hartsville; grandchildren, Brad Kelly and Greg Kelly.

LAWRENCE BLACKWELL SR.

McBEE – Funeral services for Lawrence Blackwell Sr., 88, were held at 4 p.m. Monday, March 18, 2002, at Union United Methodist Church. The Rev. Charlie Short officiated with burial in the church cemetery directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home.

Memorials may be made to Union United Methodist Church, PO Box 398, McBee, SC 29101. The family will be located at the home of Steven and Debby Blackwell, 330 Winburn Lake Rd., McBee.

Mr. Blackwell died Friday, March 15, 2002. Born in Chesterfield County, he was a son of the late George Chris-topher and Sue Lee Caston Blackwell. He was a member of Union United Methodist Church, served in the Army during W.W. II, and retired from the Kendall Company.

Surviving are his wife, Claudia Steen Blackwell of McBee; son and daughters-in-law, Eddie and Shirley Blackwell of Hartsville, Annie Ruth Adams Blackwell of Hartsville; brother, Lester Blackwell of McBee; grandsons and wife, Steven L. and Debby Blackwell of McBee, Glenn Blackwell of Hartsville; granddaughter and husband, Sharon and David Earle of McBee; great-grandsons, Darrick Rhodes, Jacob Earle, and Zachary Earle. He was predeceased by a son, Lawrence Blackwell Jr., two brothers, Lucas Blackwell and Louie Blackwell and a sister, Lou Doris Mozingo.

CURT BYRD

Funeral services for Curtis "Curt" Monroe Byrd Sr. 65, were held at 2 p.m. Monday, March 18, 2002, at Mount Olivet Baptist Church. The Revs. Ricky Cox and Rocky Heath officiated with burial in Mt. Olivet Baptist Church Cemetery directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home.

Mr. Byrd died Friday, March 15, 2002. Born in Chesterfield County, he was a son of the late John D. and Lizzie Linton Byrd. He was a member and deacon of Harris Creek Baptist Church, and was previously employed with Perfection Gear.

Surviving are his son and daughter-in-law, C. M. and Pam Byrd of Society Hill; a daughter, Dawn Byrd of Hartsville; brothers, J. D. Byrd of Frostburg, Md., Raymond Byrd of Society Hill, Connie Byrd of Society Hill; grandchildren, Elena Byrd, Dylan Byrd, Rebecca Byrd, Bradley Ritter. He was predeceased by a son, Dean Byrd.

DARREL C. BYRD

OATES – Darrel C. Byrd, 57, died Saturday in a Hartsville hospital. Services were held at 4 p.m. Monday, March 18, 2002, at Elim United Methodist Church. Interment followed in the church Cemetery, directed by Belk Funeral Home of Darlington.

Mr. Byrd was born in Florence County the son of Geneva Clark Byrd and the late Lucas Etheredge Byrd. After retiring from Sonoco Paper Products, he worked for Reynolds Cabinets and Carpentry. He enjoyed farming, golf, and working with wood. Mr. Byrd was a member of Elim United Methodist Church.

Surviving in addition to his mother of Patrick are his wife, Janice Raines Byrd of the home; two daughters, Nancy Elaine Byrd of Youngsville, N.C., and Dia Byrd (Bryan) Dooley of Columbia; his mother-in-law, Ethel S. Raines of Oates; two sisters, Betty Lou Parsons of Loganville, Ga., and Wynona Perdue of Patrick; one brother, Malcolm Byrd of Patrick; a sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Linwood and Judy R. Hayes of Oates, and great-nieces and great-nephew, Emma Hayes, Zane Hayes, and Kayla Hayes.

Mr. Byrd was preceded in death by a sister, Doris Winburn.

SUE ESTHER GANDY

DOVESVILLE – Sue Esther Gandy, 96, died Friday in a Florence hospital after an illness. Graveside services were held at 3 p.m. Sunday, March 17, 2002, in Black Creek Cemetery, directed by Belk Funeral Home of Darlington.

Mrs. Gandy was born the youngest daughter of the late William Alewine and Sue Alida Pitts. She was a graduate of Winthrop College with a degree in mathematics and taught school for three years in Wilson, N.C. before her marriage to the late William Charles Gandy on Oct. 4, 1929. For the majority of their years they lived in Darlington and then in the Dovesville area where she was a long time member of Black Creek Baptist Church, serving as a teacher in several classes and a student of the Bible. Mrs. Gandy was active in WMU and especially enjoyed her work with G.A.s. She was also an avid gardener and spent many hours in her yard among her roses and daylilies. Her last years were spent at Methodist Manor of the Pee Dee surrounded by loving friends and caring staff members. Mrs. Gandy's last days were made comfortable by the care of her dear friends Robin Nichols and Tanya Gray.

Surviving are her son, William C. (Betty June) Gandy of Dovesville; a daughter, Betty Sue Gandy of Dovesville; two grandchildren, Mrs. Albert (June) Hay and Craig (Phyllis) Gandy; and two great-granddaughters, Elizabeth Hay and Ashley Gandy.

Mrs. Gandy was preceded in death by her brother, Charles Pitts; and her sisters, Lucille Ladd, Martha Curtis, and Fairy Lee Bandy.

Memorials may be made to the American Heart Associa-tion, PO Box 5216, Glen Allen, Va. 23058-5216 or to the charity of one's choice.

FRANCIS R. PERRITT

DARLINGTON – Mr. Francis Roderick "Ronnie" Perritt, 54, of Darlington died Wednesday, March 13, 2002. Services were held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, March 16, 2002, in the Kistler-Hardee Funeral Home Chapel. Burial followed in the Philadelphia Southern Methodist Church Cemetery, directed by Kistler-Hardee Funeral Home.

Mr. Perritt was born in Marion County and was the son of the late William A. and Frances Lundy Perritt. He was owner and operator of Irrigation and Drainage, Inc. Mr. Perritt was previously employed with R.E. Goodson Construction Company for many years. He will be remembered as a loving husband and step-father.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Lou Perritt, of the home; one step-son, Jamie McCaskill of Indiana; two step-daughters, Lisa M. (Lee) Baker of Hartsville and Angie M. (Randy) Freeman of Darlington; one brother, William A. (Judy) Perritt of Bladenboro, N.C.; and three grandchildren, Logan Freeman, Derrick Baker and Kassidy Freeman.

Memorials are requested to be made to Southside Freewill Baptist Church, PO Box 5, Darlington, SC, 29540.

MILTON "BUD" DAVIS JR.

Services for Milton "Bud" Davis Jr. were held at 3 p.m. Saturday, March 16, 2002, in Lawson Grove Baptist Church. Burial was in the church Cemetery, directed by Young & Young Funeral Home.

Mr. Davis, 82, died Tuesday, March 12, 2002, in Carolinas Hospital System after an illness. He was born in Darlington County, a son of the late Milton and Rosa Mae Bryant Davis Sr. He received his education in the public schools of Darlington County and was a member of Lawson Grove Baptist Church.

Surviving are his wife, Goldie Abson Davis of Hartsville; five daughters, Gloria (Jacob) Wells of Washington , D.C., Magnolia Davis of Darlington, Patricia Peterson of Yorkers, N.Y., Gelinda Green of Lamar and Donnette (Jimmy) Bruce of Hartsville; seven sons, Willie J. (Grace) Davis, Levelle (Lillie) Davis, Robert L. (Shirley) Davis, Deacon Gene (Rosa) Davis, Levern (Irene) Davis, James (Gloria) Davis, and Deacon Lewis (Tasha) Davis, all of Hartsville; two sisters, Pensacola Hart of Hartsville and Dorothy Mae Muldrow, of Washington , D.C.; 27 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.
