MADGELEINE KELLY
Graveside services for Madgeleine Kelly, 73, will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 16, 2002, at Magnolia Cemetery. The Rev. Ed Griggs will officiate and Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home is in charge. The family will receive friends Friday, March 15, from 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home.
Miss Kelly died Wednesday, March 13, 2002. Born in Chesterfield County, she was a daughter of the late Major Anderson Kelley and Margaret Johnson Kelley Wilhelm. She was retired from DuPont's May plant in Camden.
Surviving are her sister and brother-in-law, Annie Jane K. and Jack C. Langston of Summerville; step-father, John Ellis Wilhelm of Hartsville; niece, Shirley Kelley Mozingo of Hartsville; nephew, Major Anderson (Andy) Kelley III of Hartsville; and several other nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her brother, Major Anderson Kelley Jr.
WILLIE L. JOHNSON
Funeral services for Deacon Willie Lee Johnson, Sr., will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 16, 2002, in Friendship Baptist Church with the Rev. Jamey O. Graham, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in Faith Memorial Gardens, directed by Mitchell-Josey Funeral Home of Darlington.
Deacon Johnson died on Monday, March 11, in a Columbia hospital after an illness. He was born in Darlington County, a son of the late Johnnie E. and Nezzie Johnson. He received his formal education in the Darlington County public schools after which he was drafted into the U.S. Army during WWII and was honorably discharged. At an early age, he joined Jerusalem Baptist Church in Hartsville; after moving to Darlington, he joined Macedonia Baptist Church where he served in many capacities and was a Deacon. Years later, he moved his membership to Friendship Baptist Church where he served as a Deacon until his declining health. He was a successful farmer from which he retired. In the community, he was a member of the Shriners, Crescent Temple #148 of Florence, and a former member of East Bound Masonic Lodge.
Survivors include his loving wife, Mrs. Catherine Johnson of Darlington; a devoted son and wife, Willie (Maria) Johnson Jr. of Helotes, Texas ; three sisters, Mrs. Gladys (Aaron) Scott of Grofton, Md., Mrs. Christine Samuel of New York, N.Y. and Mrs. Gertrude Edwards of Maryland; four brothers, the Rev. George (Ada) Johnson of Pageland, Nathaniel (Flonnie Bell) Johnson of Reading, Pa., Lawrence Johnson of New York and Carlmelton Johnson of Washington , D.C.; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren.
Wake services were held Thursday night. The family will receive friends at the home of the Rev. and Mrs. Henry Alford of 449 Pineville St., Darlington.
DOLLY WILSON
BISHOPVILLE – Funeral services for Dolly Mae McCathern Wilson, 65, were held at 2 p.m. Monday, March 11, 2002, at Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Billy Melton officiated with burial in Concord Baptist Church Cemetery.
Mrs. Wilson, widow of Ernest A. McCathern, died Friday, March 8. Born in Darlington County, she was a daughter of the late Henry and Roxie Hill Euten.
Surviving are her son and daughter-in-law, Aaron and Karen McCathern of Lugoff; daughters and sons-in-law, Ernestine and Michael Burcham of Lucknow, Linda and Charlie Gainey of Hartsville, Sarah LeMacks of Turkey Creek; sisters, Daisey Clark, Mary Lee Matuse and Derby Euten, all of Hartsville; 11 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
HENRY GILL PERRY
WINDSOR, N.C. – Funeral services for Henry Gill Perry, 74, will be held at 2 p.m. today, March 8, 2002, at the Walker Funeral Home Chapel in Windsor, N.C. The Rev. Chuck Gray and the Rev. Raymond Hoggard Jr. will officiate with burial following in Edgewood.
Mr. Perry died Wednesday, March 6, in Pitt Memorial Hospital. He was born in Bertie County on Sept. 3, 1927, to the late James Lessie and Dora Lee Perry. He was a member of Windsor Assembly of God Church and retired from the Jesse Jones Company. He was an Army veteran of World War II.
Survivors include his wife, Louise Harden Perry of Windsor, N.C.; three daughters, Barbara Louise P. Dampier of Hartsville; Joyce Ann P. Bass of Edenton, N.C., and Sandra Jean P. Newsome of Lasker, N.C.; five sons, David Gill Perry, Randy Glenn Perry, Henry Steven Perry and Danny Bert Perry, all of Windsor, N.C., and Rick Jonathan Perry of Jacksonville, N.C.; two sisters, Edna P. Turner of Colerain, N.C., and Florence P. Brown of Durham, N.C.; two brothers, Sidney Perry of Colerain, N.C., and James Lessie Perry Jr. of Nashville, Tenn.; and eight grandchildren.
OLIVIA G. OUTLAW
SUMTER – Funeral services for Olivia Rydonia Gibson Outlaw, 85, were held at 4 p.m. Sunday, March 3, 2002, in the chapel of Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home with the Rev. Bruce Sayre and the Rev. Jim Johnston officiating. Burial was in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery. Memorials may be made to St. Mark's United Methodist Church, 27 Broad St., Sumter, S.C. 29150.
Mrs. Outlaw, wife of Oscar DuBose "O.D." Outlaw, died Thursday, Feb. 28, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born in Clarendon County, she was a daughter of the late John Rollins Gibson and Emily Elizabeth Stone Gibson. She was a member of St. Mark's United Methodist Church.
Survivors besides her husband of Sumter include a son, John Daniel Outlaw and wife, Lynne, of Virginia Beach, Va.; a daughter, Cleo Elizabeth Childress and husband, Philip V., of Spartanburg; a brother, Hugh Elridge Gibson of Hartsville; a sister, Lila Mae Boyce of Sumter; and a grandson.
Pallbearers were Buddy Robinson, Fritz LeGrand, Johnny McLeod, L. E. Martin, Jim Price and John Bailes.
FRANCES B. JANERETTE
DARLINGTON – Funeral services for Frances B. Janerette will be held at 4 p.m. today, March 8, 2002, in Greater Bethel A.M.E. Church with the Rev. Cynthia V. Brown, pastor, and the Rev. Joseph Darby officiating. Burial will follow in Faith Memorial Gardens, directed by Mitchell-Josey Funeral Home.
Ms. Janerette died on Monday, March 4, in Morrell Memorial Convalescent Center in Hartsville after a long illness. She was born in Davis Station, Clarendon County, a daughter of the late Dr. I. W. Janerette and Henrietta Pearson Janerette. She was a dedicated member of Bethel A.M.E. Church where she served in various capacities. Being a daughter of a staunch A.M.E. minister, this gave her the privilege of living in several places in the state of South Carolina. Therefore, she was educated in the elementary schools of Sumter, Marion and Darlington counties. She was a graduate of Mayo High School and continued her education at Allen University, South Carolina State College and Howard University in Washington , D.C. She was a public school teacher in the Hartsville area schools, from which she retired several years ago.
Survivors include two sisters, Mrs. Viola J. Richardson of Hartsville and Mrs. Estelle J. Floyd of Charleston; two brothers-in-law, Carnell Richardson of Hartsville and Willie W. Bristow Jr. of Darlington; two aunts, Ms. Louise Pearson of Manning and Mrs. Viola Madison of New York, N.Y.; four nephews; six grand-nieces and one grand-nephew.
THOMAS C. ATKINSON
Funeral services for Thomas Carroll Atkinson, 53, were held at 3 p.m. Tuesday at Gum Branch Baptist Church with the Rev. Jeff Gardner officiating. Burial was in the church Cemetery, directed by Norton Funeral Home.
Mr. Atkinson died March 3, in an auto accident in Florence County, coming home from work with with his co-workers. He was born in Darlington County, a son of David Thomas and Louise Hendrix Atkinson. He was employed with Sun Construction Co. and was a member of Gum Branch Baptist Church and a Vietnam Veteran.
Surviving are his parents of Hartsville; two adopted sons, Ronald Lucas of Hartsville and Joey Lucas of Darlington; brothers, Michael Gene Atkinson, Randall David Atkinson, Charles Edgar Atkinson, all of Hartsville; sister, Kathy Griggs of Hartsville; two grandchildren, Megan and Hanna Lucas of Hartsville; and nephew, Chad Campbell of Hartsville.
CHRISTOS N. DEMETRIOUS
DARLINGTON – Funeral services for Christos Nicholas Demetrious, 94, were held at 3 p.m. Tuesday, March 5, 2002, at The Transfiguration of Our Savior Greek Orthodox Church in Florence. Interment followed in Grove Hill Cemetery in Darlington, directed by Belk Funeral Home.
A Trisagion service was held Monday at 7 p.m. in the chapel Belk Funeral Home.

Mr. Demetrious was born in Klavsion, Evrytania, Greece, the son of the late Nicholas and Olympia Demetrious. He settled in Darlington in 1931, where he owned and operated several restaurants, most recently the Carolina Lunch and the Dairy Bar. In 1947 he married Katina Pappas of Karpenisi, Greece, in Danville, Va. Mr. Demetrious was a founding member of The Transfiguration of Our Savior Greek Orthodox Church and a member of the church's Boards of Directors. He was a member of the American Legion Post 13, VFW Gray-Farrow Post 3609, St. David's Masonic Lodge, AHEPA, Evrytanians of America, Velouchi. In recent years, he had been recognized by all of these organizations for his outstanding contributions.
Surviving are his wife, Katina Pappas Demetrious of the home; a son, Nicky Chris Demetrious of Darlington; two daughters and a son-in-law, Mary Demetrious of Darlington and Paula D. and Jack Lawson of Florence; three granddaughters, Mary Katherine Lawson, Charlotte Lawson and Jacqueline Christina "Jaycie" Lawson; and a special niece and nephew, Tom and Georgia Hamberis of Darlington.
