KENNETH E. PAULHUS
WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – Memorial services for Kenneth E. Paulhus, will be held at St. Mary's Church on Wednesday, Feb. 27. A reception will follow the service from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Mr. Paulhus graduated from Hartsville High School and served 15 years in the U.S. Navy. He died Jan. 26.
MELVIN MASHACK
Funeral services for Melvin Mashack, 58, will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 2, 2002, in Harold L. & Dorothy J. Young Memorial Chapel. Burial will be in St. John United Methodist Church Cemetery, directed by Young & Young Funeral Home.
Mr. Mashack died Sunday, Feb. 24, after an apparent heart attack. He was born in Darlington County, a son of the late Luther and Berneatha McClain Mashack Sr. He received his education in the public schools of Darlington County and was a graduate of Butler High School class of 1962. After graduation he lived in New York City for two years and was drafted into the Armed Forces in 1964. He served in Vietnam and returned home to his family and resided in the Southside Community. He was a faithful employee of Sonoco Products Company for 35 years.
Surviving are four sisters, Mamie Roma Dargan of Lamar, Mary Ellen George Byrd of Hartsville, Mae Willis Bradford and Mae Bell McNeil, both of Baltimore, Md.; a brother, Luther (Emily) Mashack Jr. of Hartsville; 23 nieces, seven nephews and other close relatives and friends.
JUNIOUS LEE JACOBS
Junious Lee Jacobs died Wednesday, Feb. 27, 2002, in Wilson Medical Center after an illness. Funeral arrangements will be announced by Hines Funeral Home. The family will receive friends at the residence, Home Security Apts. D-5.

Mr. Melvin Mayshack of Hartsville died Sunday, Feb. 24, after an illness. Funeral services will be announced by Young & Young Funeral Home.
The family will receive friends at the home of his brother, Luther Mayshack, 1712 Blanding Dr., Hartsville.
ETHEL DIXON
SOCIETY HILL – Funeral Services for Ethel Kelly Dixon, 89, will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 2, 2002, at Welsh Neck Baptist Church. The Rev. Tom Rutan will officiate with burial in Welsh Neck Baptist Church Cemetery directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home. The family will receive friends Friday, March 1, 2002, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Society Hill Rescue Squad.
Mrs. Dixon died Thursday, Feb. 28, 2002. Born in Chesterfield County, she was a daughter of the late Wiley and Elizabeth Kelly. She was a lifetime member of Welsh Neck Baptist Church, a Sunday school teacher, choir member, WMU, Welsh Neck Ramblers, and was a well-known biscuit maker. She retired as the owner and operator, along with her husband, of Dixon Grocery.
Surviving are her son and daughter-in-law, Charles and Miriam Dixon of Society Hill; daughter and son-in-law, Lela and Lawrence Hursey of Hartsville; grandchildren, Beth Vo, Jill Hamrick, Cammie Dixon, Susan Evans, Larry Hursey, Alex and Nicole Hursey, Christopher and Haley Parker, Jennifer Parker.
MARY D. BREWER
FLORENCE – A memorial mass for Mary Dean Brewer, 59, will held at 11 a.m. today, Friday, March 1, 2002, at St. John's Episcopal Church. Funeral services will be Friday at 2 p.m. in Greenlawn Memorial Park Chapel, 845 Leesburg Road in Columbia. Burial will follow at Greenlawn Memorial Park Cemetery.
Dr. Brewer, a devoted community leader who raised the bar of professionalism for development and fund-raising in the region, died Tuesday, Feb. 26, 2002, after a heroic battle with cancer. She was a cherished and inspirational role model for professional associates, friends and family.
Dr. Brewer, served as vice president of communications and development for McLeod Health since 1994, and leaves behind a legacy of dynamic leadership, business integrity and commitment to the welfare of others through the coordination of philanthropy, fund-raising and numerous community projects. At McLeod, she successfully developed strong partnerships in health education, medical research, patient and family support services and regional children's health initiatives, helping to facilitate the region's first collaborative effort for children's health and education, called Healthy Foundations.
A corporate executive and former college administrator, Dr. Brewer demonstrated keen insight and experience in private higher education. She was an influential teacher, an accomplished development professional and a perceptive strategic planner.
As the chief operating officer of the separately chartered and governed McLeod Foundation, she provided leadership in communications and strategic planning and policy development, as well as Foundation Board development, investment and funds management.
Prior to her work at McLeod Health, Dr. Brewer served as vice president of development and institutional advancement at Elmira College in Elmira, N.Y.; director of development at Boston University and director of development and a professor of marketing at the Rochester Institute of Technology.
Dr. Brewer earned her Ed. D degree from the University of Rochester, an MBA from the University of South Carolina and her undergraduate degree from Winthrop University.
Dr. Brewer served on the Board of Directors for Family Policy, Leadership South Carolina, Florence County Coalition for Educational Excellence, president of the Girl Scout Council of the Pee Dee, Board of Directors for South Carolina Planned Giving Council, Board of Directors of the Florence Rotary Club, the Mayors Committee for All America City, and a member of the South Carolina Women in Higher Education.
She was a recipient of the Rotary International Service Above Self Humanitarian Award, and a member of the Kappa Delta Pi National Honor Society in Education, Omicron Delta Kappa National Honor Society in Leadership and a National Honoree of the American Association of University Women.
Dr. Mary Dean Brewer was married to George T. Alley, formerly dean of the hotel management programs at Boston University and Rochester Institute of Technology and a nationally known management consultant in the hospitality industry. He has one son, Michael, of Rochester, New York. The couple also shared sponsorship of their international student-daughter Luz Nidia Rodriquez, formerly of Bogota, Colombia. Dr. Brewer is also survived by her parents, Barney and Mary Brewer of Columbia; a brother, Barney "Buddy" Brewer Jr. and his wife, Lynn, of Columbia; and two nieces, Weatherly and Caroline Brewer.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the McLeod Medical Center Foundation, McLeod Hospice or The Mary Dean Brewer Scholarship at Winthrop University.
CHARLOTTE ELIZABETH FIELDS KING
SMITHFIELD, Utah – Funeral and burial services for Charlotte Elizabeth Fields King will be held on Monday, March 4, 2002, at Liberty Hill Baptist Church in Hartsville at 12 noon.
Mrs. King, our beloved mother, grandmother and friend, returned home to her Heavenly Father on Feb. 25, 2002.
Elizabeth was born March 21, 1907, in Bishopville, where she also attended school for 11 years. She worked as a nurse for Byerly Hospital in Hartsville in the nursery until she retired.
She married Ebb Beasley in 1928. He was taken from her in a train accident. They had one son, Robert Beasley, who passed away as a child. She married Pat B. King Sr. in 1946. They had one son, Pat B. King Jr.
Elizabeth moved to Utah from Hartsville at the age of 83 to be close to her family. She resided at Greenbriar Apartments in Smithfield, Utah, where she enjoyed the company of many close friends.
She is survived by her son, Pat B. King Jr. of Logan, Utah; two grandchildren:. Jacy and Jardy King, Smithfield; ex-daughter-in-law, Lori (Bob) Culver and many nieces and nephews. PATSEY H. CRIST
Funeral services for Patricia Howle Crist, 51, will be held at 3 p.m. today, Wednesday, Feb. 27, 2002, at Cedar Creek Baptist Church. The Rev. Homer Hinson will officiate with burial in the church cemetery directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home.
Mrs. Crist died Sunday, Feb. 24. Born in Darlington County, she was a daughter of Mary Elizabeth Perdue Howle and the late Charles Marion Howle. She was a member of Cedar Creek Baptist Church. She worked for McLeod Infusion and Equipment Co. of Florence.
Surviving are her husband, C. Allen Crist of Hartsville; son, Jason Crist of Hartsville; mother of Hartsville; brother, C. Wayne Howle of Hartsville; she was predeceased by her father C. Marion Howle.
