MARGARET BREWINGTON

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – Chellie Margaret Brewington died Saturday, Feb. 16, 2002, at Bayfront Hospital in St. Petersburg, Fla. Born in Darlington County, she was the daughter of the late Barney and Bonnie Culpepper Privette.

Surviving are her daughters, Wickie Lofgren, Rita Daniels and Patti Brewington, all of St. Petersburg; beloved son-in-law, Richard Lofgren of St. Petersburg; brother and sister-in-law, Robert and Eveyln Privette of Hartsville; aunt, Mary Margaret Culpep-per of Hartsville; sisters and brother-in-law Eunice G. and Jake Hoffman of Hartsville, and Joyce P. Craven of Marietta, Ga.

The family will receive friends at the home of Robert and Eveyln Privette at 923 West Home Ave., Hartsville.

Brown-Pennington-Atkinson Funeral Home is in charge of local arrangements.

ROBERT L. SMALL

EAST ORANGE, N.J. – Mr. Robert L. Small, father of Mrs. Karen Hines, died on Wednesday in East Orange, N.J., after an illness. Arrange-ments will be announced by Hines Funeral Home.

DOROTHY S. HOPE

MANASSAS, Va. – Dorothy (Dot) Sanders Hope, 88, died Saturday, Feb. 17, 2002, at Annaburg Manor in Manassas after a long illness.

Originally from South Caro-lina, she was a longtime resident of Manassas. She was a charter member of the Prince William Hospital Ladies Auxiliary (Pink Ladies) and the Manassas WomenÕs Club. She attended Grace Methodist Church and Manassas Presby-terian Church. Before moving to Manassas she was a member of Shandon Methodist Church, Columbia, S.C. Her husband, retired U.S. Air Force Col. Thomas A. Hope, and a daughter, Dottie Hope Wenum, preceded her in death.

Survivors include two daughters, Mary Hope Rotenberry and Alexis O. Hope, both of Manassas; a sister, Frances Whitaker of Columbia, S.C.; eight grandchildren, Cheryl Rotenberry Brown of Manassas, Bobby, Tommy, Timmy, and Teddy Wenum, all of Atlanta, Casey Wenum of Shreveport, La., and Andy Wenum of Hopkins, S.C.; and 13 great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Ames Funeral Home, 8914 Quarry Road, Manassas, Va. A private graveside service will be held in McBee, S.C.

WALTER LEROY WARD III

BATON ROUGE, La. – Funeral services for Walter LeRoy Ward III, 76, will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 21, 2002, in Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. until Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30, celebrated by the Reverend Michael Maroney. Interment will be in Roselawn Cemetery, directed by Rabenhorst Funeral Home of Baton Rouge, La.

Mr. Ward was a retired insurance executive and member of a prominent Louisiana banking family who passed away at 9:15 p.m., Sunday, Feb. 17, 2002, at his residence in Baton Rouge after a long, courageous battle with Alzheimer's disease.

He attended Woodberry Forest School, Orange, Va.; the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he lettered in track, and was a member of Phi Delta Theta fraternity; and was graduated from Tulane University in 1948. He served four and a half years in the United States Marine Corps during World War II. An avid sportsman, he especially loved golf and duck hunting. He was a devout Catholic, a member of Our Lady of Mercy Church, where he was formerly a member of the Ushers Society. When he resided in Hartsville, he was Grand Knight of the Knights of Columbus of the Father Louis R. Williamson Council #8123. Father Williamson was the priest who married Mr. and Mrs. Ward in 1947.

A loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, he is survived by his wife of 54 years, Joy Gilbert Ward; five cherished daughters and four sons-in-law: Diane Ward Toups; Katherine Ward and her husband Philip A. Weiner, of LaJolla, Calif.; Claire Ward Murphy and her husband Michael P. Murphy, of Mandeville, La.; Clay Ward Roberts and her husband Richard A. Roberts Jr.; and Janie Ward Martin and her husband David K. Martin; 10 beloved grandchildren: Dana Howard Toups Jr., his wife Suzanne, and Joy Danielle Toups; Stephanie Elizabeth Ward; Christopher Clay Dosˇ and Patrick Alain Dosˇ; George Sullivan Roberts and Joy Jeanette Roberts; and William Claiborne Martin, Lauren Gray Martin, and Andrew Grant Martin; one great-grandchild, Tristen Marie Toups; one brother, Swan Sullivan Ward, M.D., of New Orleans, his stepmother, Virginia Wallace Ward; two devoted companions, his Black Lab Sabah and his Shih Tzu Mimi; and his talking parakeet, Pepper. He was preceded in death by his mother and step-father, Katherine Sullivan McHardy and Dr. Gordon McHardy, and his father, Walter LeRoy Ward Jr.

Honorary pallbearers will be Robert E. Warren, Hansen Scobee, Austin S. Bridgeforth, Dr. A.K. McInnis, Russell Fish, Dr. Millard Byrd, Col. Byron Greene of Hartsville, Mr. Ward's cousin William P. Conery, Jr. of Waveland, Miss., Marion J. Cangelosi and Roy F. Cangelosi.

Active pallbearers will be Philip A. Weiner, Michael P. Murphy, Richard A. Roberts, David K. Martin, Mac Peek, and Dr. Richard Byrd.

The family wishes to thank Dr. Richard Lieux, Dr. Steven Zuckerman, and Dr. Joseph Albergamo for their special care. Also, Maxine Atley, a devoted caretaker, the staff of the Landmark of Baton Rouge, and the staff of Hospice of Baton Rouge.

MATTIE B. BAREFOOT

Funeral services for Mattie Brown Barefoot, 87, widow of Boyd David Barefoot, were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 17, 2002, at John Wesley Methodist Church with the Rev. John C. Smith officiating. Burial was in Magnolia Cemetery, directed by Norton Funeral Home.

Mrs. Barefoot died Friday, Feb. 15. Born in Chesterfield County, she was a daughter of the late Jessie Brown and Martha Outlaw.

Surviving are four daughters, LaFaye Gainey and Lila Johnson of Hartsville, Martha Morris of Florence and Linda Johnson of Greenville; one sister, Sarah Johnson of Hartsville; one brother, J. C. Outlaw of Buffalo, N.Y.; 10 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Betty Crowley.

Memorials may be made to the John Wesley Methodist Church, 317 Forest Hills Drive, Hartsville, SC 29550.

THELMA J. BEASLEY

LAMAR – Funeral services for Thelma Joye Beasley, 93, were held at 11 a.m. Monday, Feb. 18, 2002, at Lamar United Methodist Church. Interment followed in Lamar Cemetery, directed by Belk Funeral Home, Lamar Chapel.

Mrs. Beasley, wife of the late Gerald Beasley, died Saturday, Feb. 16, in a Florence hospital after an illness. She was born in Darlington County, the daughter of the late J. Z. and Essie Carter Beasley. She was a teacher for 33 years and was active in many community organizations. Mrs. Beasley was a resident of Methodist Manor of the Pee Dee in Florence since 1998 and a member of Lamar United Methodist Church.

Surviving are a son, Jerry (Ann) Beasley of Blythewood; a daughter, Mrs. Joe (Janelle) Sinnett of Columbia; four grandchildren, Dr. John G. Beasley Jr., Joye Harpe, both of Columbia, Commander J. Christopher Sinnett of Exeter, N.H., and Vicki L. Sinnett of Arlington, Va.; and six great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Lamar United Methodist Church, PO Box 555, Lamar, SC 29069 or to the charity of one's choice.

MARLENE B. BAUR

Funeral services for Mrs. Marlene B. Baur, 62, were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 16, 2002, in Darlington Memory Gardens, directed by Kistler-Hardee Funeral Home.

Mrs. Baur died Wednesday, Feb. 13, in a local hospital after an illness.

She was born on Sarasota, Fla., and was the daughter of the late Lamar and Mary Hankins Wingate. She was a loving wife, grandmother and homemaker. Mrs. Baur enjoyed watching television, playing video games and reading. She was previously employed with the Hartsville Messenger.

Mrs. Baur was preceded in death by parents, as well as a sister, Judy Welch.

Survivors include her husband, David H. Baur, of the home; one son, Mark (Michele) Baur of Hartsville; one daughter, Julie (Daniel) French of Atlanta, Ga.; one brother, Richard Wingate of Sarasota, Fla.; one sister, Ann Steere of Sarasota, Fla; four grandchildren, Ashley, Matthew, Justice and Abigail; and her favorite cat, "Spidget."

IDA CAMPBELL

Funeral services for Ida Campbell, 87, were held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 16, 2002, in Jerusalem Baptist Church with burial in Greenlawn Cemetery, directed by Young & Young Funeral Home.

Mrs. Campbell died Wednesday, Feb. 13, in Morrell Nursing Center. Born in Asheville, N.C., she received her education in Sumter County public schools and was a member of Jerusalem Baptist Church.

Surviving are two sons, Roosevelt Campbell of Hartsville, J.C. Campbell of Baltimore, Md.; a sister, Geneva Plumer of Baltimore, Md.; 12 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews and other close relatives and friends.

CLARENCE W. TURNER JR.

DARLINGTON – Funeral services for Woodrow "C.W." Turner Jr., 79, were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 19, 2002, at Temple Free Will Baptist Church. Interment followed in Garden of Memory in Florence, directed by Belk Funeral Home of Darlington.

Mr. Turner died Saturday, Feb. 16, in a Hartsville nursing home after an illness. He was born in Dillon County, the son of the late Clarence W. and Ellar Daniels Turner. He was married to the late Amanda Elizabeth Caulder Turner. He served his country in the U.S. Army in the field artillery division. He was employed in advertising for many years. Mr. Turner was a member of Temple Free Will Baptist Church and was involved as a volunteer at the Dorn VA Hospital in Columbia, American Legion Post 13, and was formerly Sergeant at Arms for the DAV.

Surviving are two sons, Horace Turner of Darlington and Charles W. Turner of Lamar; a daughter, Doris O'Neal of Darlington; nine grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

Mr. Turner was preceded in death by a daughter, Jane Wright.

Memorials may be made to the Disabled American Veterans Chapter 72, Darlington.
