ERNESTINE T. WALKER

LAMAR – Funeral services for Ernestine Tallon Joye Walker, 91, were held at 2 p.m. Monday, Feb. 4, 2002, at Lamar United Methodist Church. Interment followed in Newman Swamp Cemetery, directed by Belk Funeral Home, Lamar Chapel.

Mrs. Walker died Saturday, Feb. 2, in a Florence hospital after an illness. She was born in Lee County, the daughter of the late Clarence Hugh and Lula Irene Parnell Tallon. She was married to the late James L. Joye and to the late Edwin L. Walker. Mrs. Walker worked as a postal clerk for 26 years before her retirement. She was a member of Lamar United Methodist Church and the Bernie Sue Sunday School class and Bessie Jeffords Circle of the church.

Surviving are two sons, Robert E. (Gloria) Joye of Lamar and James W. (Peggy) Joye of Hartsville; three step-sons, Lamar Walker and Melvin Walker, both of Bishopville, and Robert M. Walker of Lexington; one step-daughter, Ellen W. McKaig of Columbia; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Memorials maybe made to Lamar United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 555, Lamar, SC 29069.

RALPH BROWN

SWANSEA – Graveside funeral services for Ralph Emmett Brown Jr., 44, were held at 12 noon Friday, Feb. 1, 2002, in Lake City Memorial Park, directed by Brockington Funeral Home of Lake City.

Mr. Brown died Tuesday, Jan. 29, at his residence after an illness. He was born in Florence, a son of Brooksie Daniels Bowen and the late Ralph Emmett Brown Sr. He was employed with Best Auto Sales of North, S.C.

Survivors include his wife, Catherine Williams Brown of Swansea; two sons, Daniel Emmett Brown and Tyler Luke Brown, both of Swansea; his mother, Brooksie D. Bowen, and step-father, T. H. Bowen of Hartsville; two sisters, Ann B. (Jason) Crowley and Susan Brown, both of Hartsville; one brother, Carl Lyle (Winnie) Brown of Hartsville; five nieces and one nephew. He was predeceased by his maternal grandparents, Troy and Addie Daniels, and his paternal grandparents, Lev W. and Julia Brown.

DIANE O'NEAL

Funeral services for Diane D. O'Neal, 52, will be held at 2 p.m. today, Wednesday, Feb. 6, 2002, at Wilkes Chapel United Methodist Church. The Rev. Buddy Jones will officiate with burial in the church cemetery directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home.

Mrs. O'Neal, wife of Ted O'Neal, died Sunday, Feb. 3, 2002. Born in Darlington County, she was a daughter of Buck A. Dixon and the late Margaret Freeman Dixon. She was a member of Wilkes Chapel United Methodist Church.

Surviving are her husband, Ted O'Neal of Hartsville; son and daughter-in-law, Michael Todd and Stacie Weldon of Patrick, two step-children, Johnny O'Neal of Orangeburg and Chrystal O'Neal of Beaufort; daughter and son-in-law, Angela W. and Eddie Tiller of Hartsville; father of Hartsville; brothers, Donnie L. Dixon of Daytona Beach, Fla., Richard Dixon of Hartsville, Danny Ray Dixon of Patrick; and five grandchildren.

LOUISE AMIS SMITH

GREENVILLE – Ms. Louise Amis Smith, 34, granddaughter of the late Richard Gay and Tuck Amis Coker of Hartsville, died Sunday, Feb. 3, 2002, in Greenville after a long illness. Memorial services will be held at 3 p.m. today, Wednesday, Feb. 6, 2002, at Christ the King Lutheran Church, 1925 Pelham Rd., Greenville. The family requests that no flowers be sent. Memorials may be made to the Christopher Reeve Foundation.

Ms. Smith was the daughter of Ellison D. Smith III and Louise Coker Ewing. She attended Christ Church School and was a graduate of Wade Hampton High School and Winthrop College.

Surviving are her parents; brother, Ellison D. Smith IV; sisters, Adelia Tuck Oliva and Laura Grove.

CURLEN WOODHAM

BISHOPVILLE – Funeral services for Curlen Truluck Woodham, 82, were held at 4 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 3, 2002, at Hebron United Methodist Church. The Rev. Scarlett Tanner officiated with burial in the church cemetery directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Association or Hebron United Methodist Church.

Mrs. Woodham, widow of Charles Ray Woodham, died Friday, Feb. 1, 2002. Born in Lynchburg, S.C., she was a daughter of the late Luther and Rebecca Hodge Truluck.

Surviving are her daughters and sons-in-law, Becky Woodham, Charlene and Walby Craven, Darlene and Lewis Watkins, all of Bishopville; grandchildren, Cole Watkins, Reid Watkins and Hartley Craven.

RUBY E. TAYLOR

Funeral Services for Ruby Edelle Lloyd Taylor, 81, were held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 3, 2002, at Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Michael McAuley officiated with burial in Westview Memorial Park Cemetery.

Mrs. Taylor, widow of Raymond F. Paquette and Smith R. Taylor, died Thursday, Jan. 31, 2002. Born in Lamar, she was the daughter of the late Asbury and Marie Adams Lloyd. Ruby Edelle loved working in her garden, and everyone in her community enjoyed her beautiful flowers. Her love for children was best shown through the past quarter-century at the annual Easter Egg hunt she hosted for her neighborhood.

Surviving are her son and daughter-in-law, Raymond F. and Catherine Paquette Jr. of Raleigh, N.C.; step-sons, Robert Taylor and Steve Taylor, both of Myrtle Beach; brothers, Harold Lloyd of Darlington, Carlyle Lloyd of Myrtle Beach; sisters, Annie Andrews of Winston-Salem, N.C., Helen Brock of Logoff, Agnes Smith of Darlington; grandchildren, Ray Paquette of Florence, Henry Paquette Witt of Scott AFB, Ill., Sharon Jones of Hartsville, Charles Taylor of Darlington; 13 great grandchildren; a special friend and neighbor, Pat Hall. She was predeceased by a son, Henry Asbury Paquette.

JOHN WEAVER

COLUMBIA – Graveside services for Col. John Burdeen "Burt" Weaver (ret.), 68, were held at 11 a.m. Monday, Feb. 4, 2002, in Magnolia Cemetery in Hartsville. Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home was in charge.

Col. Weaver died Friday, Feb. 1, 2002. Born in Florence, he was a son of the late David Wallace and Sue Lee Kelly Weaver. He lived and grew up in Hartsville. He was a 1955 graduate of The Citadel and received his master's degree from the University of Maryland. He was retired from the U.S. Army with a distinguished military career.

Surviving are his daughters, Pam Sawyer of Colorado Springs, Colo., Desiree Weaver of Frankfurt, Germany; grandsons, Astern Sawyer and Braden Sawyer.

ROCKY MANGUM

DARLINGTON – Funeral services for Rockie Laverne "Rockie" Mangum, 38, will be held at 4 p.m. today, Wednesday, Feb. 6, 2002, at the Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home Chapel with burial in Damascus Cemetery. The family will receive friends today from 3 to 4 p.m. at the funeral home.

Mr. Mangum died Friday, Feb. 1, 2002. Born in Columbia, he was a son of Nora Jones Mangum and the late Thomas Hall Mangum. He left this world after a short but valiant fight with cancer. He was much loved by his many friends and family members. True to the end was the love of his life, Sue Gainey, and Mr. & Mrs. Tommy Newman and family.

Surviving are his mother of Darlington; brothers, Rodger Mangum of Darlington, Charles McGuire of Willow Springs, N.C., Steve McGuire of Columbia; sisters, Rebecca Hopkins of Houston, Texas , and Sharon Holbert of Myrtle Beach.
