GRACE DUBOSE

MCBEE – Funeral services for Grace Lee DuBose, 85, will be held at 3 p.m. today, Wednesday, April 3, 2002, at Union United Methodist Church. The Rev. Ed Griggs will officiate with burial in the church cemetery directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home. The family will receive friends Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Ms. DuBose died Monday, April 1, 2002. Born in Darlington County, she was a daughter of the late Monroe Bunyon and Nell Newsome DuBose. She was a member of Union United Methodist Church. She was retired from Sonoco Products Company with 33 years of service and was a member of the Old Timers Club.

Surviving are her sister, Sue Nell McCoy of McBee; nieces and nephews; great-great niece, Amy Holley of McBee.

ALMENA SMITH

Funeral services for Almena Watford Smith, 84, were held at 3 p.m. Sunday, March 31, 2002, at Spring Branch Baptist Church. The Rev. Buddy Amerson officiated with burial in the church cemetery directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home.

Memorials may be made to the Spring Branch Baptist Church Building Fund.

Mrs. Smith, widow of Wade Smith, died Friday, March 29, 2002. Born in Darlington County, she was a daughter of the late Soloman and Ollie Smith Watford. She was a member of Spring Branch Baptist Church. She was retired from Sonoco Products Company with 36 years of service and was a member of the Old Timers Club.

Surviving is her sister, Inez Windburn of Hartsville.

DON BATEMAN

Funeral services for Donald "Don" S. Bateman Sr., 60, were held at 4 p.m. Saturday, March 30, 2002, at the Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Dale Broadway officiated with burial in Swift Creek Baptist Church Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the Hospice of the Pee Dee, 555 E. Cheves St., Florence, SC 29506.

Mr. Bateman died Thursday, March 28, 2002. Born in Darlington County, he was a son of the late William Claude and Bonnie Kay Odom Bateman. He was a member of New Providence Baptist Church and was previously employed as a truck driver for Moss Trucking Company.

Surviving are his wife, Linda Flowers Bateman of Hartsville; sons and daughter-in-law, Donald S. and Lisa Bateman Jr. of Norfolk, Va., Charles S. "Scotty" Bateman of Hartsville; daughter, Jeannine B. Brigman of Hartsville; brothers, Ted Bateman and Wilson Bateman, both of Hartsville; and six grandchildren.

JESSE STEWART

Funeral services for Jesse Oscar Stewart, 81, were held at 3 p.m. Monday, April 1, 2002, at Prospect United Methodist Church. The Rev. Bud Boatwright officiated with burial in the church cemetery directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home.

Mr. Stewart, widower of Lou Doris Johnson Stewart, died Wednesday, March 27, 2002. Born in Sharon, Okla., he was a son of the late James Oscar and Myrtle Kerr Stewart. He and his wife spent many years in Galveston, Texas , where he was retired from Union Carbide. He was a World War II veteran serving in the U. S. Army Air Corps.

Surviving are his brother and sister-in-law, Kenneth and Helen Stewart of Wichita, Kan.

KENNETH JOHNSON

Graveside services for C. Kenneth "Criss Cross" Johnson, 68, were held at 4:30 p.m. Monday, April 1, 2002, in Hebron United Methodist Church Cemetery, Chesterfield County. Steven Henson and the Rev. Tommy Browne officiated and Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home was in charge.

Mr. Johnson died Friday, March 29, 2002. Born in Darlington County, he was a son of the late Othea Meade and Talitha Cumy Hall Strickland Johnson. He was a member of Hebron United Methodist Church, McBee Masonic Lodge, Scottish Rite, and Yaarab Temple of the Shrine. He was retired from Sonoco Products Company with 28 years of service and was a member of the Old Timers Club. He was a former governor of the Moose Lodge of Smyrna, Ga.

Surviving are his wife, Elsie Strickland Johnson of Hartsville; sons and daughter-in-law, Clifford Kenny and Karen Johnson of Powder Springs, Ga., C. A. Downing Jr. of Hampton, Va.; daughters, Marsha Carwile and Robin J. Byars, both of Marietta, Ga., DeNice Downing of Milan, Italy; 10 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren.

BLAKE BOYD SR.

Graveside services for James Blake Boyd, Sr., 84, will be held at 11 a.m. today, April 10, 2002, in Magnolia Cemetery. The Rev. Dr. Bob Cline will officiate and Brown Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home is in charge. The family will receive friends at the residence. Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church Building Fund, 104 E. Home Ave., Hartsville, SC 29550 or Children's Chance, Box 7453, Columbia, SC 29202.

Mr. Boyd, widower of Ellen Foreman Boyd, died Sunday, April 7, 2002. Born in Hartsville, he was a son of the late William Clarence and Elizabeth Lyles Boyd, both of Fairfield County. He was a graduate of the University of South Carolina, member of the First Baptist Church, secretary/treasurer of the Carolinas-Virginia Purchasing Agents Association, chairman of the Sonoco Advisory Board and vice-president of the American League Dixie Youth Baseball. He was retired as corporate vice president Ð purchasing and traffic for Sonoco Products Company with 41 years of service.

Surviving are his son and daughter-in-law, James Blake and Lee Taylor Boyd Jr. of Rembert; daughters and son-in-law, Louise Boyd and Rex Alderman Maynard of Belton, Ellen Boyd LeMauviel of Asheville, N.C.; grandchildren, Ellen Kathryn Blake, Mamie Louise Blake, James Blake Boyd III, Marjorie Lee Boyd, Ellen Yvonne Louisa Le Mauviel, Sadie Ellen Maynard Blake and her husband, Julius Augustus Blake, Mamie Louise Maynard, Rex Alderman Maynard Jr. and Albert Blake Maynard; great grandchildren, Ellen Kathryn Blake and Mamie Louise Blake. He was predeceased by a grandson, Arthur Taylor Boyd; brothers, William Clarence Boyd Jr., John Lyles Boyd; and sister, Lucy Boyd Adams.

ESSIE MOZINGO

Funeral services for Essie Parnell Mozingo, 82, will be held at 4 p.m. today, April 10, 2002, at Savannah Advent Christian Church. The Revs. Michael Blake and Charles McLendon will officiate with burial in the church cemetery directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home. The family will receive friends Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Savannah Advent Christian Church, 1948 Ashland-Stokes Bridge Rd., Bishopville, SC 29010.

Mrs. Mozingo, widow of Gary Mozingo died Monday, April 8, 2002. Born in Darlington County, she was a daughter of the late Columbus Arthur and Ida Gertrude Fields Parnell. She was a member of Savannah Advent Christian Church.

Surviving are her sons and daughters-in-law, Edward and Nancy Mozingo of Williston, Gene and Ann Mozingo of Hartsville; sisters-in-law, Betty Parnell of Shelby, N.C., Katherine Melton of Gastonia, N.C.; Dora Parnell of Lamar; grandchildren, Gary Mozingo, Amanda Mozingo, Caroline Mozingo; and several nieces and nephews.

JAY GULE HUNTER JR.

DARLINGTON - Funeral services for Jay Gule "June" Hunter Jr. were held at 4 p.m. Tuesday, April 9, 2002, at Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. D. L. Hughes, pastor, officiating. Burial was in Hoodfield Cemetery, directed by Mitchell-Josey Funeral Home.

Mr. Hunter died Thursday, April 4, in a Florence hospital after an illness. He was born in Darlington County, a son of the late Jay Gule Sr. and Estell Abraham Hunter. He received his formal education in the Darlington County public schools. He was employed at Dixie Cup Factory, and later he was self-employed owner and operator of Hunter's Exxon Service Station.

Survivors include his wife of 47 years, Mrs. Alice Dubose Hunter of the home; a son, Jay Gule (Michelle) Hunter III of Florence; two sisters, Mrs. Dorothy (Clarence) Ezekiel of Darlington and Ms. Vickie Ganines of Raleigh, N.C.; three brothers, A. J. Hunter, Leroy Hodges, both of Darlington, and Earley Jackson of Baltimore, Md.; a special brother, Palmira Hunter of New York; four grandchildren; four brothers-in-law; three sisters-in-law; nieces, nephews and cousins.

The family is receiving friends at the home of his sister and brother-in-law, Dorothy and Clarence Ezekiel, of 123 Joe Louis Blvd., Darlington.
