JANNIE MAE ANDERSON

LAMAR - Funeral services for Jannie Mae Anderson will be held at 3 p.m. today, April 10, 2002, at St. John United Methodist Church in Oates, with the Rev. Fredrick Yebuah, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in the church Cemetery, directed by Mitchell-Josey Funeral Home.

Mrs. Anderson died Saturday, April 6, in a Florence hospital after an illness. She was born in Darlington County, a daughter of the late Dock and Eliza Jane Nichols Byrd. She was the widow of Jessie Anderson. She was educated in the Darlington County public schools and was a life member of St. John United Methodist Church.

Survivors include a son, Donnie Anderson of the home; two daughters, Jeannette (Edward) Ward and Jessie Mae (Jimmy) Johnson, both of Hartsville; nine grandchildren; two of whom she reared like her own, Cheryl Anderson and Lakesha Anderson; six great-grandchildren; two aunts, Mrs. Eva Nicholas and Mrs. Mabel McCullough, both of Lamar; a sister-in-law, Etha Jane "Duckie" Byrd of Darlington; a daughter-in-law, nieces and nephews.

The family is receiving friends at the residence, 2292 Jefford Road, Lamar.

LEROY HODGES

DARLINGTON – Funeral services for Leroy "Brat" Hodges, 71, were held at 1 p.m. Thursday, April 18, 2002, in Tabernacle Holiness Church with Bishop C. L. Johnson, pastor, officiating. Burial followed in Florence National Cemetery, directed by Mitchell-Josey Funeral Home.

Mr. Hodges died Monday, April 15, in Darlington after an illness. He was born in Darlington County, a son of the late Henry and Bertha Privitt Hodges. He received his education in the Darlington County public schools. He served his country in the U.S. Army and after serving his tenure was honorably discharged. He joined Bethel A.M.E. Church after marriage; he attended St. John Apostolic Holiness Church in Kingstree. He was employed with Darlington Veneer Company.

Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Hodges of Kingstree; a daughter, Ms. Claudia D. Byrd of Largo, Md.; four step-children; two grandchildren; one great-grandchild; seven step-grandchildren; two special nieces, Claretta Hines of Darlington and Barbara Ann Gilbert of Philadelphia, Pa.; one sister, Dorothy (Clarence) Ezekiel; two brothers, A. J. Hunter of Darlington and Early Jackson of Baltimore, Md.

Three sisters and two brothers preceded him in death, Curley Mae Grant, Louise Charles, Carrie Mae Hines, Henry Hodges and Jay Gule Hunter Jr.

GLADYS PROSSER

DARLINGTON – Funeral services for Gladys Snipes Sansbury Prosser, 90, will be held at 11 a.m. this morning, April 19, 2002, in the chapel of Belk Funeral Home with interment following in Grove Hill Cemetery.

Mrs. Prosser died Wednesday, April 17, at Bethea Baptist Retirement Community. She was born in Florence County, daughter of the late Archie G. and Mae Thomas Snipes. She was a retired kindergarten teacher and member of First Baptist Church. She was first married to the late Olin B. Sansbury.

Surviving are her husband, J. Odell Prosser of Darlington; daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Warren C. (Nancy) Baker III of Florence; sons and daughters-in-law, Dr. and Mrs. Oline B. (Muffet) Sansbury Jr. of Spartanburg and Mr. and Mrs. Joel (Pat) Prosser of Florence; granddaughters and husbands, Mr. and Mrs. Greg (Shannon) Best of Hartsville, Mr. and Mrs. Lynn (Deirdre Colleen) Hughes of Florence; Mr. and Mrs. Thomas (Amy) Howle of Darlington and Mary Ellen Baker of Florence; grandson, O. Bennett Sansbury III of Simpsonville; great grandsons, Ryan W. Kilgo and Robby L. Kilgo, both of Darlington, and Cole D. Hughes of Florence; sisters and brother-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. William P. (Betty) Campbell and Mrs. Edna S. Young of Florence; brothers and sisters-in-law, Milton E. (Claire) Snipes of Franklin, N.C., and B. Robert (Bobby Lou) of Florence; also several nieces and nephews, as well as two special friends, Mrs. Jackie Spears and Mrs. Cora Lee Jacobs.

Serving as pallbearers are grandsons, grandsons-in-law, great-grandson, Ryan Kilgo and nephew, Scotty Campbell of Lake City.

Memorials are suggested to Hospice of the Pee Dee, 555 E. Cheves St., Florence, SC 29506 and Bethea Baptist Retirement Community, PO Drawer 4000, Darlington, SC, 29540.

ALENE TEAL

Funeral services for Alene Huggins Adams Teal, 87, were held at 4 p.m. Thursday, April 18, 2002, at Pine Ridge First Baptist Church. The Rev. Billy Campbell officiated with burial in the church cemetery directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home.

Mrs. Teal, widow of William Carl Teal, died Tuesday, April 16, 2002. Born in Chesterfield County, she was a daughter of the late James P. and Carrie Parker Huggins.

Surviving are her son and daughter-in-law, James and Betty Adams of Atlanta, Ga.; daughters and sons-in-law, Mildred Lunn, Jeanette and Wayne Gainey, Jewel and Jimmy Campbell, all of Hartsville; step-sons and wives, William Harvey and Bennie Lou Teal of Hartsville, Buck and Bernice Teal of Patrick; step-daughters and husbands, Helen and J.D. Perdue, Ethelene Tyner, Evelyn and Larry Hemminger, all of Patrick, Peggy and Roy Hill of Society Hill; 11 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren; 16 step-grandchildren, 20 step-great-grandchildren, and one step-great-great-grandchild.

MAX ANDREWS

Graveside services for Max E. Andrews, 67, were held at 11 a.m. Thursday, April 18, 2002, in Magnolia Cemetery. The Rev. Charles Boswell officiated and Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home was in charge.

Mr. Andrews died Monday, April 15, 2002. Born in Lee County, he was a son of the late Harley Ernest and Carnell Andrews Andrews. He was a member of Lakeview Baptist Church and was retired as a security guard for Roche Carolina in Florence.

Surviving are his wife, Yvonne Kelley Andrews of Hartsville; sons, Dennis Winburn of Hartsville, Kenneth P. Winburn of Columbia, Ronald L. Winburn of Hartsville, Bruce Winburn of Williamston; sister and brother-in-law, Faye and Henry Fishburne of Sumter; brother, John L. Andrews of Hartsville; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren. His first wife, Dorothy Andrews, preceded him in death.

FRANCES JAMES

Funeral services for Frances O'Neill James, 71, were held at 2 p.m. Thursday, April 18, 2002, at New Providence Baptist Church. The Rev. Dale Broadway and Bro. Glenn M. Jones officiated with burial in Magnolia Cemetery directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the New Providence Baptist Church, 1884 Antioch Rd., Hartsville, SC 29550.

Mrs. James, widow of John Henry James, died Monday, April 15, 2002. Born in Darlington County, she was a daughter of the late Marvin and Susan Wright O'Neill. She fully dedicated her life to the needs of her husband and family. As a member of New Providence Baptist Church, she attended faithfully, while her health permitted.

Surviving are her son and daughter-in-law, Al and Mindy James of Hartsville; daughters and sons-in-law, Linda and Archie Brown of Hartsville, Sandra and Glenn Jones of Hartsville; brothers, Mack O'Neill of Hartsville, John O'Neill of Clinton, Glenn Curtis O'Neill of Hartsville; grandchildren, Shelley Rodes, Mallory James, Susan Davis, Sharon Heustess, Amanda Howard, Anthony Jones; two great-grandchildren.

LAVERN WOODS

Funeral services for Lavern "Big Boy" Woods were held at 3 p.m. Thursday, April 18, 2002, at Gilbert Hines Memorial Chapel. Burial was in Darlington Memory Gardens with professional services directed by Hines Funeral Home.

Mr. Woods died Monday, April 15, in Oakhaven Nursing Home after an extended illness. He was born in Darlington County, a son of Fannie Bell Enoch and the late Mack Woods. He was educated in the public schools. He first worked as a farmer to provide for his family and later worked with the Wicks Lumber Company of Florence for many years until his health failed. He was married to Celestine Alford and this union was blessed with three children. He attended the John Wesley United Methodist Church with his family.

Surviving are two daughters, Jacqueline (Paul) Bailey of Hartsville and Janice (Calvin) Jacobs of Darlington; two sons, Kennedy (Louise Johnson) Woods of Hartsville and Lavern (Sharon McGaine) Woods Jr. of Mayesville; a sister, Lula (Robert) Aaron of Bishopville; two brothers, Isaac (Nellie) Woods of Darlington and Burnett (Clarice) Woods of Madison, Ga.; and nine grandchildren.

EUGENE COTTON

Funeral services for Eugene (Gene Bo) Cotton, 67, will be held at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, April 21, 2002, in Hartsville Bible Baptist Church. Burial will be in Bethesda Baptist Church Cemetery, directed by Young & Young Funeral Home.

Mr. Cotton died Tuesday, April 16, in Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center after an illness. He was born in Darlington County, a son of the late Celio Richardson and Alean Cotton Wheeler. He received his education in Darlington County public schools. Mr. Cotton was a retired farmer and was a member of Hartsville Bible Baptist Church.

Surviving are five daughters, Earline Cotton, Connie M. Cotton and Beverly A. Howard (Locious) all of Hartsville, Lois A. Cotton of McBee and Pandora C. Scott (Ezekiel) of Darlington; three sons, Eugene Cotton Jr., Ervin Cotton and Ronnie Cotton, all of Hartsville; two sisters, Lillie Robinson of Baltimore, Md., and Elzenia W. Benjamin of Hartsville; seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; an aunt, Ruth (Jack) Tedder of Darlington; and an uncle, John (Maybell) Cotton of Pinehurst, N.C.
