LOIS J. BOYKIN

LAKE WATEREE - Funeral services for Lois Faye Johnson Boykin, 53, were held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, May 1, 2002, in the chapel of Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home of Sumter with the Rev. Rodney Hord officiating. Burial was in Piedmont Cemetery in Bishopville.

Nephews served as pallbearers.

Mrs. Boykin, wife of Harvey B. "Brig" Boykin, died Sunday, April 21, at Palmetto Baptist Medical Center in Columbia. Born in Cheraw, she was a daughter of the late Ransey C. Johnson and Ola Edwards Johnson. She was a Baptist. She was a licensed practical nurse at Moncrief Army Hospital at Fort Jackson and was a member of the Professional Nurses Association.

Survivors besides her husband of Ridgeway include two sons, Brian Boykin of Columbia and Garrett Boykin of Daytona, Fla.; a brother, R.C. Johnson of Dovesville; and four sisters, Shelby Hall and Bonnie Dye, both of Hartsville, Gail Hapeshis of Kingstree and Melinda Gandy of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.

She was preceded in death by a brother, James H. Johnson.

Memorials may be made to a charity of one's choice.

GEORGE C. O'NEAL

KANNAPOLIS, N.C. - Funeral services for George Curtis O'Neal, 55, will be held at 11 a.m. today, May 3, 2002, at the chapel of Whitley's Funeral Home. The Revs. Darrell Furr and Larry Beaver will officiate. A second service will be held at 3 p.m. at the Tabernacle United Methodist Church in McBee.

Mr. O'Neal died Tuesday, April 30. He was born in Darlington County, a son of the late George Fuller O'Neal and Bertha Winburn O'Neal Tucker. He was retired from Dominion Yarns in Landis.

Surviving are his wife, Rose Marie Ruff O'Neal of Kannapolis, N.C.; three sons, Floyd Fleeman and Curtis O'Neal, both of Kannapolis, and Bryan O'Neal of Salisbury, N.C.; six sisters, Marilyn Steen, Mary Boykin, Edna Atkins, Odessa Smith and Lois O'Neal, all of Hartsville, and Mildred Brown of McBee; four grandchildren; several great- and great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Tasha O'Neal; brothers, Evander and Monroe O'Neal; and sisters, Carolyn Gainey and Elouise Smith.

Local arrangements are being handled by Norton Funeral Home.

Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association, Mid-Atlantic Affiliate, Memorials & Tributes Processing Center, PO Box 5216, Glen Allen, Va. 23058-5216.

MAZAREE WILSON

Mrs. Mazaree Wilson died Thursday, May 2, 2002, at Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center. Funeral arrangements will be announced by Hines Funeral Home.

ANNIE LEE STEPHENS

Funeral services for Annie Lee Miller Stephens, 78, were held at 4 p.m. Thursday, May 2, 2002, at Bible Truth Holiness Church with the Revs. Hazel Mixon and Charlotte Walters officiating. Burial was in the Clyde Church of God Cemetery, directed by Norton Funeral Home, Hartsville Chapel.

Mrs. Stephens was born in Darlington County, a daughter of the late Joe and Dora Weatherford Miller. She was a member of Clyde Church of God.

Surviving is a son, William (Billy) Stephens Jr. of Hartsville; a daughter, Barbara Stephens of Lydia; sisters, Vernell Gainey of Hartsville and Ethel Tadlock of Darlington; two grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

WILLIE G. FREEMAN

BISHOPVILLE - Funeral services for Willie Gene Freeman, 58, will be held at 5 p.m. today, May 3, 2002, at Mt. Hebron Free Will Baptist Church with the Revs. Jack Cobb and Carl Miles officiating. Burial will be in the church Cemetery, directed by Norton Funeral Home, Bishopville Chapel.

Mr. Freeman was born in Kershaw County, a son of the late William and Callie Rollins Freeman.

Surviving are two sisters, Myrtle O'Neal of Hartsville and Margaret McCathern of Lucknow; six nieces and nephews.

JAMES DENNIS

Graveside services for James Lacey Dennis Sr., 61, will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday, May 11, 200 at Brunson Cemetery, Sumter. The Rev. Jerry Watson will officiate with burial in Brunson Cemetery directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home. The family will receive friends this evening, Friday, May 10, 2002 from 6-8 at the funeral home.

Mr. Dennis died Thursday, May 9, 2002. Born in Sumter County, he was a son of Elihu and Bertha Prescott Dennis. He was previously employed with Hartsville Radiator.

Surviving are his wife, Sandra Osborne Dennis of Hartsville; sons and daughter-in-law, Todd Rogers of Cayce, Jamie and Ann Marie Dennis of Hartsville; daughters and sons-in-law, Angelia and Kenneth Boyd of Elgin, Robin and David Edenfield of Chapin; father and mother, of Sumter; sister and brother-in-law, Donna and Ronald Brown of Sumter; grandchildren, Kayla Edenfield, Kristen Boyd, Ashlyn Boyd; and special friend, Hassan Najjar.

NETTIE LUNDY

Funeral services for Nettie Rhodes Lundy, 77, will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 11, 2002, at Swift Creek Baptist Church. The Rev. Peter Rivera will officiate with burial in the church cemetery directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home. The family will receive friends this evening, Friday, May 10, 2002, from 6-8 at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Swift Creek Baptist Church Building Fund, 413 North Center Rd., Hartsville, SC 29550.

Mrs. Lundy, widow of William Henry Lundy, died Wednesday, May 8, 2002. Born in Darlington County, she was a daughter of the late Joseph Dorsey and Zeta Flowers Rhodes. She was a member of Swift Creek Baptist Church.

Surviving are her son, William Jerry Lundy of Hartsville; daughters and son-in-law, Rovenia and Allan Miller of Rock Hill, Mildred Crowley of Florence; sister, Pauline Rhodes of Hartsville; and five grandchildren.

WANDA L. WOODARD

ASHEVILLE, N.C. - A memorial service will be held for Wanda Lucille (Lucy) Smith Woodard, 53, at 2 pm. on Sunday, May 12, 2002, at Jubilee Community Church with the Rev. Howard Hanger officiating. The family requests in lieu of flowers, contributions be made to the Asheville Humane Society, 72 Lee's Creek Road, Asheville, NC 28806, the oncology unit of Mission St. Joseph's Hospital, 509 Biltmore Ave., Asheville, NC 28801 or Jubilee! Community Church, 46 Wall Street, Asheville, NC 28801. Morris Funeral Home of Asheville is assisting the family.

Mrs. Woodard entered into a larger life on Saturday, May 4, 2002. She was born Feb. 13, 1949, in Hartsville, the daughter of James Roy and Verdie Allen Smith. She was married to William (Bill) Woodard, and is survived by her parents, her husband, two sons, Nathan Croom of Raleigh, N.C., and Josh Croom of Greenwood; two sisters, Patricia Dieterich of Turnersville, N.J., and Sharon Smith of Little Switzerland, N.C.; aunts, Terah Davis, Mary Lee Johansson, both of Hartsville, Elizabeth Smith and her husband, Jule, of Cheraw; uncle, John L. Allen of Ruby; nieces, Joanna H. Franklin, Theresa D. Keen; nephews, Matthew E. Hawkins and Henry Dieterich III; and great nieces, Eliza Jo Franklin and Heather and Ahsley Keen.

Lucy graduated from Coker College and received her master's degree from the University of South Carolina. Courageous and optimistic, Lucy celebrated life, and was well loved by her husband, family and friends. She was an advocate for, and lover or animals, enjoyed literature and was an avid reader. Entertaining was a favorite activity, especially if it involved board games. She taught in the public schools for 28 years, and is fondly remembered by her students and by her fellow teachers for her inspiration and guidance. One of her goals in this past year was to complete the 60 mile cancer walk in Georgia, and she raised $3,200 for the cancer walk. She was an active member of Jubilee! Community Church.

PAUL W. STURM

GREEN VALLEY, Ariz. - Paul W. Sturm, former manager of the Carolina Sandhills National Wildlife Refuge near McBee, died April 21, 2002, in Green Valley, Ariz. after a short illness.

He was born on May 10, 1913, in Marthasville, Warren County, Mo. Paul was the son of the Rev. Carl F. Sturm Sr. and Mina Aufderhaar Sturm. Paul served at the following wildlife refuges: St. Mark's National Wildlife Refuge at St. Mark's, Fla. (1946-47); Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge at Manteo, N.C. (1947-59); Cape Roman National Wildlife Refuge at McClellanville, S.C. (1949-54); Carolina Sandhills National Wildlife Refuge at McBee, S.C.; Kentucky Woodland National Wildlife Refuge at Golden Pond, Trigg County, Ky. (1959-65). He then transferred to TVA and in 1975 retired as supervisor of wildlife for TVA in the Land Between the Lakes in Trigg County, Ky.

In 1965, Paul was president of Murray, Kentucky Kiwanis Club. After he retired in 1975, he and his wife, Charlotte, moved from Murray, Ky., to Green Valley, Ariz., in 1983. He was a member of the Kiwanis Club of the Santa Ritas and the Good Shepherd United Church of Christ. Mr. Sturm had a long-time interest in computers and woodworking and was known for his exquisite bowls.

He is survived by his two children, William P. Sturm of Lexington, Ky., and Anne Marie Sturm Kruger of Ann Arbor, Mich.; two grandchildren, Charlotte Mason Kruger Gruner and Robert P. Kruger; two great-grandchildren, Katie Gruner and Mason Kruger; and one sister, Madeline Sturm Meyer of Elmhurst, Ill.

WILLIE J. BRUCE

DARLINGTON - Funeral services for Willie James Bruce were held at 4 p.m. Thursday, May 16, 2002, in Christ Temple Holiness Church. Elder Wesley Belin, pastor, officiated. Burial followed in Faith Memorial Gardens directed by Mitchell-Josey Funeral Home.

Mr. Bruce died on Sunday, May 12, at his residence. He was born in Darlington County a son of the late Joshua and Mary Ellen Wilson Bruce Sr. He attended the Darlington County public schools and at an early age attended St. James United Methodist Church, and in later years Christ Temple Holiness Church. He was employed by Odom Air Conditioning for a number of years.

Survivors include a sister, Andrena Stergis; two brothers, Joshua (Pearlie Mae) Bruce and Roland (Doris) Bruce, all of Darlington; nieces, nephews and cousins.
