JIMMIE SIMON

SOCIETY HILL - Funeral services for Mrs. Jimmie Simon, 90, were held at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 28, 2002, at Mt. Rona Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. Matthew Robinson, pastor, officiating. Burial followed in the church Cemetery, directed by Mitchell-Josey Funeral Home.

Mrs. Simon, died Saturday, May 25, in a Hartsville hospital after an illness. She was born in Darlington County, a daughter of the late Nancy Martin. She was the widow of Luchious Simon Sr. She received her formal education in Darlington County public schools. She was a life member of Mt. Rona Baptist Church where she served on the senior choir, missionary society and other capacities as needed until her declining health.

She was employed as a cook with the Darlington County School District at Rosenwald Elementary and High School. She was also owner and operator of Simons' Snack Bar.

She was preceded in death by a son, Luchious Simon Jr.

Survivors include a special son, Robert (Juanita) Wilson of Cheraw; grandchildren, Donnie M. (the Rev. Conrad) Gibson of Dover, Pa., Ronnie (Marie) Nettles of Newton will, N.J., Phillip Nettles of York, Pa.; four other grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

MATTIE T. GAINEY

DARLINGTON - Funeral services for Mattie Tedder Gainey, 89, were held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 28, 2002, in the Kistler Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Charlotte Walters. Burial followed in the Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church Cemetery in Lydia, directed by Kistler-Hardee Funeral Home.

Mrs. Gainey died Saturday, May 25, in a local hospital. She was born in Lee County and was the daughter of the late Sam and Hannah Jones Tedder. She was a homemaker and was married to the late James Monroe Gainey. Mrs. Gainey loved children and enjoyed flowers.

She was preceded in death by two children; two brothers; two sisters; and four grandchildren.

Survivors include one sister, Creola (Chelsey) Lloyd of Darlington; two grandchildren, Mattie Ellis of Cordele, Ga., Margaret Driggers of Scanton, Barbara Hodges and James Gainey, both of Hartsville, Joann Gainey and Rita Hopkins, both of Darlington, Ricky Cassidy of Seneca, Hannah Howle of Florence, Patricia Frye of Lamar and Vernie Rae Gainey of Patrick; 48 great-grandchildren and 50 great-great grandchildren.

LUCY B. JOHNSON

DARLINGTON - Funeral services for Lucy Brown Johnson will be held at 3 p.m. today, Wednesday, May 29, 2002, in New Ebenezer Baptist Church, Florence with the Rev. Norman Gamble, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Pinelawn Memorial Cemetery, Farmingdale, N.Y, directed by Mitchell-Josey Funeral Home.

Mrs. Johnson died Thursday, May 23, in a Hartsville hospital after an illness. She was born in Lee County, a daughter of the late Rev. William and Mamie Rogers Brown. She was the widow of Leo Johnson Sr. She was educated in the Lee County public schools. At an early age, she joined Sandy Grove Methodist Church serving on the Usher Board. After moving to New York City, she joined Bridge Street A.W.M.E. Church in Brooklyn. After retiring from New York University in 1998 and living more than 45 years in New York City, she returned to South Carolina and made her home in Darlington.

Survivors include six grandchildren, Mamie (Raymond) Adams of Spring Fields Garden, N.Y., Charles (Stephanie) Johnson of Staten Island, N.Y., Leo (Sheila) Johnson Jr. of Hempstead, N.Y., Barbara (John) Blake of Palm Coast, Fla., Ferd (Dian) Johnaon of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Elaine (John deceased) Everett of Queens, N.Y.; a sister, Willette (Henry) Harris of Florence; 11 grandchildren; three of whom she reared as her own, Keith, Krystal and Karen; four great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews; three special cousins, Mary "Sister" Mercy of Philadelphia, Pa., Eunice Burris of Hartsville and Mattie Adams of Brooklyn, N.Y.; and a host of cousins.

BERENETHA GOODSON

Funeral services for Berenetha Goodson, 91, will be held at 12 noon Friday, May 31, 2002, at Shady Grove Baptist Church, McBee. with the Rev. J. J. Backus, officiating. Burial will be in the church Cemetery, directed by Young & Young Funeral Home.

Mrs. Goodson died Friday, May 24, at Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center after an illness. She was born in Darlington County, a daughter of the late David and Artesia Peoples Daniels. She received her education in the public schools of Darlington County and was a member of Shady Grove Baptist Church, the Senior Choir, Missionary Society and the Order of Eastern Star Community No. 205.

Surviving are three sons, Carson Sowell of New York, N.Y., Eugene Sowell of Columbia and Robert Goodson Jr. of Hartsville; a sister, Mary McIver of Hartsville; an aunt, Lelia Peoples of Lamar; grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

CLARENCE E. GREEN

SOCIETY HILL - Funeral services for Clarence E. Greene, 78, were held at 4 p.m. Tuesday, May 28, 2002, in Bethesda Baptist Church with the Rev. Byron Wilson, officiating. Burial was in the church Cemetery, directed by Young & Young Funeral Home.

Mr. Greene died Thursday, May 23, in McLeod Regional Medical Center after an illness. He was born in Darlington County, a son of the late Clarence and Susanna Fountain Greene. He was a graduate of Rosenwald High School and was a member of Bethesda Baptist Church, Gospel Choir, Men's Club, Trustee Board and the Pee Dee Lodge No. 56.

Surviving are his wife, Jacquline A. Williams Greene of Society Hill; Carolyn M. Greene of Ballston, N.Y., Fern (Ernest) Williams and Georgette Blair, both of Queens, N.Y., and Deann (Artie) Perez of Parling, N.J.; two sons, Robert (Shirley) Dupree of Washington , D.C., and Alvin Greene of New York, N.Y.; three sisters, Cynthia Baston and Carrie G. McQueen, both of Society Hill and Josephine (Eulissee) Winborne of Queens, N.Y.; a brother, William Greene of Queens, N.Y.; 24 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law and a host of nieces, nephews and other close relatives and friends.

ERNEST ELDRED MCMILLAN

SUMMERVILLE - Funeral services for Ernest Eldred McMillan will be held at 11 a.m. today, Wednesday, May 29, 2002, at J. Henry Stuhr, Inc., Greenridge Road Chapel, North Charleston. Burial will follow in Carolina Memorial Gardens in Charleston. Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to Cathedral of Praise, 3790 Ashley Phosphate Road, North Charleston, SC 29418.

Mr. McMillan was born October 26, 1917, in Lometa, Texas , the son of the late Garnet Eldred and Lillian Robinson McMillan. He was a graduate of Charleston High School and a veteran of both the United States Coast Guard and the United States Navy during World War II. Afterwards, Mr. McMillan worked at the Charleston Naval Shipyard as a machinist in shop No. 38 and was also retired from the Charleston County Tax Assessor's office as a clerk. He was a member of Lakeview Baptist Church in Hartsville.

Surviving are two daughters, Arlene McMillan Stokes of Hartsville and Dianne McMillan Brown of Summerville; one sister, Gussie Dougherty; four grandchildren, Daniel Brown, Jimmy Brown and Darlene Unbewust, all of Summerville, and Crystal Johnson of Hartsville; six great-grandchildren, James Thomas Brown III, Rylee Brown, Ashlynn Unbewust, Haley Unbewust, Brooke Johnson and Hunter Johnson.

LHUBERT H. WELCH SR.

LANCASTER - A memorial service for Hubert Hoyt Welch Sr., 78, were held at 3 p.m. Sunday, May 26, 2002, at Covenant Baptist Church, Lancaster. The Rev. Dr. Hubert H. Welch Jr., the Rev. Warren Johnson and the Rev. Keith Sellers officiated. Burial was held in Bethlehem Cemetery in Bishopville and was directed by Hartley Funeral Home of Lancaster. Memorials may be made to the Building Fund of Covenant Baptist Church, PO Box 578, Lancaster, SC 29721.

Mr. Welch died Thursday, May 23. He was born in Hopkins and grew up in Bishopville. He was a son of the late Hoyt Joseph and Janie Nesbitt Welch. Mr. Welch moved to Hartsville in 1947. During his 52 years in Hartsville, his church home was first at West Hartsville Baptist Church and later at First Baptist Church. At both churches he served as deacon, trustee, Sunday school teacher, department superintendent, and chairman of numerous committees. In dedicated Christian service, he served 20 consecutive years as treasurer of West Hartsville Baptist Church and later five years as treasurer as First Baptist Church. While chairman of the cemetery committee at First Baptist Church, he coordinated the cemetery revitalization project. He served as the first treasurer of the Welsh Neck Baptist Association and continued this service for many years. He moved to Lancaster in 1999 and was a member of Covenant Baptist Church, the Joy Sunday School class and the Senior Adult Ministry.

During World War II, Mr. Welch served in the U.S. Marine Corps. He was awarded the Purple Heart for wounds received in battles on Okinawa. He also received the Presidential Unit Citation award. He authored a book entitled, "Now Hear This!' a documentation of his memoirs during his military service. Mr. Welch was active in the Sixth District Marine Corp Association.

He was a member of the National Association of Accountants, Civitans, and the American Legion. As a member of the American Legion, he spearheaded the efforts to establish a World War II Veteran monument in Burry Park at Cargill Place. His volunteer services included the Mental Health Association, Byerly Hospital Auxiliary, the Boy Scouts of America, the Food Bank and the Trees for Tomorrow.

Mr. Welch was employed as an accountant by Sonoco Products Company for 30 years. Prior to corporate accounting restructuring, he served as Sonoco's chief accountant for several years. He retired in 1983 and was a member of the Sonoco Old Timers Club.

Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Sarah Cook Welch of Lancaster, son and daughter-in-law, Hubert Hoyt Jr. and Kathy Welch of Lancaster; daughters and sons-in-law, Susan and Michael Plunkett of Lancaster and Gayle and Craig Bentley of Augusta, Ga. Grandchildren include Brian Plunkett and wife, Tiffany of Fort Walton Beach, Fla.; Laura Plunkett of Lancaster; Brooke, Lauren and Collin Bentley of Augusta, Ga., and Hugh and Sarah Anne Welch of Lancaster. He was preceded in death by two brothers.

MISSY STRATTON

Funeral services for Melissa Walter "Missy" Stratton, 34, were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, May 26, 2002, at Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church. The Rev. Carroll Pope officiated with burial in Magnolia Cemetery, directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home.

Mrs. Stratton died Thursday, May 23. Born in Darlington County, she was a daughter of James Carroll Walters and Johnny and Betty Lyles Walters Tedder. She was a nail tech at the Sharpest Edge.

Surviving are her husband, Kenneth W. Stratton of Lamar; daughter, Lauren Stratton of Lamar; parents of Hartsville; sister, Caroline Greenwood of Pamplico; brothers, Johnny Tedder of Pamplico, Monty Tedder of Pamplico, Brent Walters of Hartsville, David C. Walters of Hartsville; paternal grandmother, Catherine B. Walters; maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Stanford Tedder of Oates
