JOSEPH UPCHURCH SR.

ASHEBORO, N.C. - Funeral services for Joseph Daniel Upchurch Sr., 73, were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, May 7, 2002, at Central Untied Methodist Church, where he was a member, with the Rev. Christopher Thore and the Rev. Barry Queen, officiating. Burial was in Randolph Memorial Park, directed by Ridge Funeral Home of Asheboro.

Mr. Upchurch was a native of Harnett County, a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War, attended Duke University and was former general manager of M&J Finance and president of G&W Motors in Shelby. He was general manager of Hartsville Motor Co. in Hartsville, general manager of Vestal Motor Co. in Asheboro and employed at Sears Teleservice Center in Greensboro.

Surviving are his wife, Kitty B. Upchurch of the home; daughter, Kathy U. Shropshire of Archdale, N.C.; sons, J. Dan Upchurch Jr. of Charlotte, N.C., Bob Upchurch of St. Louis, Mo; sister, Clara Owen of Angier; bothers, Harold M. Upchurch of Fuquay-Varina, N.C., J. B. Upchurch Jr. of Durham, N.C., and four grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association, 111 Pomona Drive, Greensboro, N.C. 27407 or Central United Methodist Church, 300 S. Main St., Asheboro, N.C. 27203.

DOROTHY J. JONES

CONWAY - A memorial service for Dorothy Jordan Jones, 67, formerly of Hartsville, was held at 1 p.m. Saturday, May 25, 2002, at Palmetto Funeral Home in Conway, with the Rev. Kevin McDaniels officiating.

Mrs. Jones died Wednesday, May 22, 2002, at Conway Hospital. She was born July 9, 1934, in Hartsville, a daughter of the late Ralph and Iona Porter Jordan. She was a long time employee of the Rainbow Drive-In in Hartsville.

Survivors include three sons, David J. Jordan of Charlotte, N.C., Ralph Blackstock of Conway and Dennis Blackstock of Danville, Va.; a sister, Barbara J. Tarlton of Anchorage, Ark., eight grandchildren; three great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Erma Blackstock Winburn and two grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Contact Crisis Line, PO Box 41, Danville, Va. 24543.

VERNON ATKINSON

Funeral services for Clarence Vernon Atkinson, 53, were held at 4 p.m. Tuesday, May 28, 2002, at Spring Branch Baptist Church with the Rev. Buddy Amerson officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery directed by Brown-Pennington Atkins Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the McBee Masonic Lodge No. 313, Box 293, McBee, SC 29101.

Mr. Atkinson died Saturday, May 25. Born in Darlington County, he was a son of the late John Muldrow and Elise Howle Atkinson. He was a member and past deacon of Spring Branch Baptist Church. He was a member of McBee Masonic Lodge No. 313 and was employed with Sonoco Products Co. for 33 years.

Surviving are his wife, Elaine Tyner Atkinson of Hartsville; son, Ron Atkinson, daughter and son-in-law, Susan and Trey Lane, all of Hartsville; brothers, Bud Atkinson, Clyde Atkinson, Allen Atkinson, all of Hartsville; sisters, Sarah Steen of Hartsville, Annell Rabon of Lugoff, Carolyn Baker of Bishopville, Macey Kirven of Hartsville, Margie Gainey of Hartsville, grandchildren; Cole Lane and Kristen Lane.

JOHN TERRY SMITH

CONWAY - A memorial service for John Terry Smith, 57, of Conway, will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, June 6, 2002, at Christ the Servant Lutheran Church, 2105 Hwy 501, Conway, with the Rev. Marion Brazell officiating. Interment will be at Penial Cemetery in Chesterfield. Memorials may be made to the American Brain Tumor Assoc., 2720 River Rd., Des Plains, IL, 60018.

Mr. Smith died on Thursday, May 30, 2002, at Hospice Care in Madison, Wis. He was born on Aug. 14, 1944, in Hartsville, the son of Burdette and Joyce (Kelly) Smith. He graduated from Chesterfield High School. John Terry then attended Spartanburg Junior College, the University of Georgia, Athens, and Wartburg Theological Seminary in Dubuque, Iowa.

He served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War and a tour of duty in Germany. He was a Lutheran pastor and hospital chaplain for much of his life. John loved reading, writing, spending time at the beach, camping, hiking and biking.

He is survived by his daughter, Jessica M. Smith of Boulder, Colo.; son, Terry J. Smith of Madison, Wis.; daughter, Samantha Kerney, Parma, Ohio; partner, Elizabeth Weems of Conway; mother, Joyce Storar; brothers: Kelly (Julia) Smith of Chapin and Mitchell B. (Joyce) Smith, Vero Beach, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father.

JAMES F. BAKER

RALEIGH, N.C. - A memorial service for James Franklin Baker, 48, formerly of Hartsville, was held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 4, at White Memorial Presbyterian Church in Raleigh, N.C. Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. today, June 6, in Magnolia Cemetery, directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home.

Mr. Baker died Sunday, June 2, at Rex Hospital surrounded by his loving family. He was the son of Earl and Jean Baker of Hartsville. Jimmy grew up in Hartsville and graduated from Coker College in 1975 with a degree in biology. He began his teaching career at Dillon High School in Dillon. In 1977 he moved to North Carolina and taught at Zebulon High School for nine years. He transferred to Broughton High School in 1986 where he taught biology and was chairperson of the science department. He also served as a mentor teacher, class advisor and club sponsor.

Mr. Baker was the recipient of many awards for his outstanding teaching. He received two Richard M. Jewell Teaching Excellence Awards, the Sigma Xi Award from North Carolina State University and was named to the Association of Science and Technology Centers Honor Roll of Teachers. He was Broughton High School's Teacher of the Year in 1999 and received the PTA Council Outstanding Teacher Award in 2000. In 1996 he was inducted into the Broughton High School Service Club, the highest non-academic honor the school bestows.

In 1990 he was selected to attend the Museum of Natural Sciences Tropical Ecology Institute in Belize and later became part of the Museum's group of outstanding North Carolina educators known as the Educators of Excellence. He initiated a very successful partnership with the museum and began three innovative student programs including Operation Success, the Students Teaching Students Program and the development of a museum intern program, which enables Broughton juniors and seniors to work closely with museum staff and receive class credit.

Mr. Baker was dedicated and caring teacher. He motivated his students and encouraged them to be involved in their own learning. "Science is fun and full of discovery," was his motto in teaching. His positive attitude and love of people contributed to his success. His colleagues, friends, students and family knew him as a special person who made a difference in the lives of all who knew him.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to the James F. Baker Memorial Fund, Broughton High School, 723 St. Mary's Street, Raleigh, NC 27605.

L. J. JOWERS

Funeral services for L. J. Jowers, 80, were held at 3 p.m. Sunday, June 2, 2002, in Mt. Elon United Methodist Church with burial in the church Cemetery, directed by Young & Young Funeral Home.

Mr. Jowers died Thursday, May 30, in Springs Memorial Hospital in Lancaster after an illness. He was born in Chesterfield County, a son of the late Alex and Mary Baker Jowers. He received his education in the public schools of Chesterfield County. He was a member of Mt. Elon United Methodist Church and retired from Buce Sullivan Logging Company.

Surviving are his wife, Mattie Bell Jowers of Jefferson; four daughters; Drucilla (Alfred) Sowell, Jean Dawson, Connie (Robert) Scarborough and Cynthia (Rarford) Linton, all of Jefferson; a son, Alvin (Gloriastine) Jowers of Jefferson; two sisters, Cassie Mae (K.D.) Chambers of Peachland, N.C., and Dezzie Jowers of Jefferson; eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren and other close relatives and friends.

COLEY B. GIBSON

GREENVILLE - Funeral services for Coley Bell Gibson, a longtime resident of Darlington, will be held at 11 a.m. today, June 5, 2002, in the chapel of Belk Funeral Home in Darlington. The family will receive friends immediately following the service at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to Bethany Christian Services, 620 E. Washington St., Greenville, SC 29601.

Mr. Gibson died Sunday, June 2, 2002, in a Greenville nursing home following a year of declining health. Born Oct. 31, 1912, in Camden, he was raised in Kershaw, the son of the late Frank V. and Lula B. Gibson. He was the widower of Lillie Mae Ghent Gibson.

The Gibsons married in Kershaw on Nov. 10, 1934, and moved to Darlington in 1940. Mr. Gibson retired from full-time work in 1975 from the Hartsville Mill, having spent most of his life in textile work. From 1976 to 1986, he was employed part-time with Advanced Security at Nytronics, Inc. in Darlington.

At the time of his death, Mr. Gibson was a member of Freedom Baptist Church in Darlington. During his years as a Darlington resident, he had also been a member of Calvary Baptist and Southside Free Will Baptist Churches, where he served in various capacities including deacon, Sunday school teacher, choir member, and church treasurer.

Mr. Gibson is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Teresa G. and David R. Heitz of Greenville; a granddaughter, Rachel Grace Heitz of Greenville; a brother-in-law, Broadus Ghent of Lancaster; three nieces, Mary G. McCaskill and Jean G. Benedict, both of Columbia, and Margie W. Lowery of Forest Hills, N.Y.; and loyal friends and caregivers, Mr. and Mrs. Tex Willard and Mrs. Althea Roberts, all of Darlington, and Mrs. Juanita James of Florence. He was predeceased by a son, Franklin Gibson, and a granddaughter, Courtney Grace Heitz.
