ILA H. EVERETT

DANVILLE, Va. - Funeral services for Ila Lois Hoover Everett, 96, formerly of Charlotte, N.C., will be held at 10:30 a.m. today, July 3, 2002. Burial will follow at Sugar Creek Presbyterian Church Cemetery in Charlotte, directed by Townes Funeral Home of Danville, Va.

Mrs. Everett died Sunday, June 30, while in Roman Eagle Memorial Home. Born on Dec. 5, 1906, in Mecklenburg County, N.C., the daughter of George Lafayette Hoover and Margaret Emma Robinson Hoover. She was a graduate of Queens College in Charlotte, N.C. She taught school in Troy and Pittsboro, N.C., and also in Nevin and Derita Schools in Mecklenburg County, N.C. She was married in 1933 to George Henry Everett Jr., who predeceased her. She was a member of the Piedmont Patriots Chapter D.A.R. in Charlotte. She was a member of the Sardis Presbyterian Church and a former member of Sugar Creek Presbyterian Church, both in Charlotte.

Survivors include her daughter, Carol Everett Strange and her husband, Dr. Charlton Bell Strange Jr., of Danville, Va.; a son, Robert Hamilton Everett and wife, Joyce Igou Everett, of Hartsville; grandchildren, Charlton Bell Strange III and wife, Pamela Neagley Strange, of Charleston and Elizabeth Strange Mahaffey and husband, R. Peyton Mahaffey, of Oak Hill, Va., Robert Hamilton Everett Jr. and Eric Swain Everett, both of Charlotte, N.C.; three great-grandchildren, and a brother, George Robinson Hoover and his wife, Dorothy H. Hoover, of Charlotte, N.C.

The family suggests that memorials may be made to the First Presbyterian Church, 937 Main St., Danville, Va. 24541, or Sardis Presbyterian Church, 6100 Sardis Road, Charlotte, N.C. 28270, or Sugar Creek Presbyterian Church, 101 Sugar Creek Road West, Charlotte, N.C. 28213.

TERESA G. GAINEY

Teresa Galloway Gainey, 52, died Wednesday, June 26, 2002, after an illness. Memorial services will be announced at a later date by Kistler-Hardee Funeral Home.

Mrs. Gainey was the daughter of Bill and Lois Lloyd Galloway. She was a certified nursing assistant and loved to shop the flea markets.

Survivors include a son, O'Brien George King of Bennettsville, and a number of cousins.

ALETA C. EDWARDS

DARLINGTON - Funeral services for Aleta Cooke Edwards, 89, were held at 4 p.m. Sunday, June 30, 2002, in Grove Hill Cemetery, directed by Belk Funeral Home.

Mrs. Edwards died Thursday evening, June 27, in United Methodist Manor of the Pee Dee after an illness. She was born in Florence County, the daughter of the late Almond Alexander and Arsena Godwin Cooke. She was the wife of the late Frank P. "Trunkie" Edwards. Mrs. Edwards received a degree from Clemson University in horticulture and went on to become the owner and operator of Edwards Nursery and Landscaping for 56 years. She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church and was very active in the church as well as several civic organizations.

Surviving are a son, Frank P (Mary Margaret) Edwards Jr., of Darlington; a daughter, Elizabeth E. (Graham) Rose of Columbia; four grandchildren, Frank P. Edward III, Susan Edwards, Christopher Rose and Ashley Rose; a great-grandchild, Alexis Edwards; one sister, Thelma C. Floyd of Scranton; one brother, Harry W. Cooke of Live Oak, Fla.; and a special niece, Dot Johnson of Darlington.

Memorials may be made to the Susan Johnson Memorial Fund, c/o Darlington Presbyterian Church, 311 Pearl Street, Darlington, SC 29532.

LaFOYE M. WATFORD

LAMAR - Funeral services for Lamar civic leader LaFoye Manly Watford, 88, were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, June 30, 2002, at Lamar United Methodist Church. Interment followed in Lamar Cemetery, directed by Belk Funeral Home, Lamar Chapel.

Mr. Watford died Friday, June 28, in a Bishopville nursing home after an illness. He was born in Darlington County, the son of the late Manly and Rosa Lee Odom Watford. He lived in this area from 1914-1932, returned from Winston-Salem, N.C., in 1947 and had resided in Lamar ever since. He was self employed for 50 years in the insurance and real estate business. Mr. Watford was a life long member of Lamar United Methodist Church where he served as chairman of the Building Committee for the Fellowship Hall and was a member of the O.L. Smith Sunday School Class. He was also active in local civic affairs. He was a founding member of the Lamar Civitan Club, a founding member of Lamar Country Club (Governor's Run Country Club), a trustee of Lamar Cemetery for 55 years, a member of the Lamar Area School Board for several years, and was instrumental in bringing a Piggy Wiggly store to Lamar.

Surviving are his wife of almost 65 years, Rosa Lee Glover Watford of the home; two daughters, Beverly Watford (Bob) Tames of Bishopville and Cindy Watford (Dwayne) Howell of Turbeville; and four grandchildren, Lee Turner of Boulder, Colo., Mitchell (Janet) Turner of Atlanta, Ga., Kristopher Howell of Franklin, Va., and Chaz Howell of Turbeville.

Mr. Watford was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Amy Turner; three sisters, Annie Bell Amos, Beatrice Tolson, Louise Huggins; and two brothers, Everette Watford and Larand Watford.

Memorials may be made to Lamar United Methodist Church Building Fund, PO Box 555, Lamar, SC 29069, or to McCoy Memorial Nursing Center, 207 Chappell Drive, Bishopville, SC 29010.

BUCK STOKES

LAMAR - Funeral services for George "Buck" Manuel Stokes, 69, were held at 4 p.m. Friday, June 28, 2002, at the Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Hazel Mixon officiated with burial following in Westview Memorial Park Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Carolina's Hospice, 121 East Cedar Street, Florence SC 29501-0550.

Mr. Stokes died Wednesday, June 26, 2002. Born in Darlington, he was a son of the late John C. and Eunice Parnell Stokes. He retired from Dupont after 39 years and three months.

Surviving are his wife, Evelyn Stokes of Lamar; son, Mitchell Stokes of Lydia; daughters and sons-in-law, Judy McKnight of Lydia, Kaye and Danny Baily of Lugoff, Lynn Gardner of McBee, Wendy and Curtis Freeman of Hartsville; step-sons, Roy Campbell of Hartsville, Timmy Windham of Lamar; step-daughters, Gwen Campbell of Hartsville, Debra Amerson of Lamar, Bonnie Evans of Effingham; sisters and brothers-in-law, Doris and Baites Windham of Lamar, Gedelle and Howard Marshall of Bethune, Pat and Henry Hall of Lydia; brothers and sisters-in-law, Franklin Dee and Julia Stokes of Lydia, Bill and Vivian Stokes of Hartsville, Johnny Mack and Linda Stokes of Hartsville, Bud Stokes of Hartsville; nine grandchildren; 10 step-grandchildren; and four step-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his son, Michael Stokes.

JESSE F. BERRY

Funeral services for Jesse Francine (Fran) Berry, 49, will be held at 1 p.m. today, July 5, 2002, at Fourth Street Baptist Church. The Revs. Brad and Kenny Lynch will officiate, directed by Norton Funeral Home.

Mrs. Berry died Monday, July 1. Born in Darlington County, she was a daughter of the late Cleveland and Virginia Atkinson Hendrix.

Surviving are two daughters, Erin Reese of Tulsa, Okla., and Heather Berry of Raleigh, N.C.; a son, Sgt. Kris Berry of San Clemente, Calif.; and five grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to the National Kidney Foundation of South Carolina, 5000 Thurmond Mall, Suite 106, Columbia, S.C. 29201.

ALPHONSO BESS

DARLINGTON - Mr. Alphonso "Al" Bess died Tuesday at McLeod Regional Medical Center after an illness. Funeral services will be announced by Hines Funeral Home. The family will receive friends at the residence at 900 Howle Ave. Darlington.

JAMES E. McELVEEN

Funeral services for James Edward McElveen, 74, formerly of Hartsville, were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 22, 2002, at Hunt Spring Baptist Church. The Revs. Brian Teeter and Woody Neal officiated with burial in Flat Springs Baptist Church Cemetery directed by Bridges-Cameron Funeral Home, Sanford, N.C. Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home handled local announcements.

Mr. McElveen died Wednesday June 19, 2002. Born in Florence County, he was a member of Hunt Springs Baptist Church, a former employee of Hartsville Cotton Mill, and Roberts Co. of Sanford, N.C. He owned and operated James' Fish House in Sanford.

Surviving are his wife, DeEtte Hurley McElveen; son and daughter-in-law, James Edward "Jamie" and Kimberly McElveen II of Sanford, N.C.; daughters and sons-in-law, Edna and Earl McElveen, Sandra and Charles Williams, all of Hartsville; brothers and sisters-in-law, George and Edna McElveen of Sanford, N.C., Marvin and Dorothy Leonard of Springfield, Mo.; nine grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his first wife, Ruby Gainey McElveen; daughter, Patricia Bryant; and brothers, Melvin McElveen, and Pete McElveen.
