MAUD YOUNG

Graveside services for Maud Wilhelm Young, 87, will be held at 11 a.m. today, Friday, July 5, 2002, at Magnolia Cemetery. The Rev. Ed Middleton will officiate with burial in Magnolia Cemetery directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the Faith Baptist Church, or to the First Baptist Church Building Fund.

Mrs. Young, widow of C. E. Young Sr., died Tuesday, July 2, 2002. Born in Darlington, she was a daughter of the late James Fred and Marie Johnson Wilhelm. She was a charter member of Faith Baptist Church and a Sunday school teacher for many years.

Surviving are her son, Christopher E. Young Jr. of Atlanta, Ga.; daughters and son-in-law, Rose Young Collins of Charlotte, N.C., Betty and Charles Sullivan of Hartsville; brother, John Ellis Wilhelm of Hartsville; grandchildren, Mary Bee Collins Duffee, Rosemary Elsesser, Duncan Sullivan; great-grandchildren, Shannon Marie Duffee, Preston Ambrose Duffee, Natalie Rae Elsesser. She was predeceased by her sister Edith W. Utsey, and her brother Charles Wilhelm.

SEN. EDWARD E. SALEEBY

Funeral services for Sen. Edward Eli Saleeby Sr., 74, were held at 3 p.m. Tuesday, July 9, 2002, at First Baptist Church. The Very Rev. Ted Duvall and the Rev. George E. Meetze officiated with burial in Magnolia Cemetery directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home.

Sen. Saleeby died Saturday, July 6, 2002. Born in Hartsville, he was a son of the late Eli Anton and Creola Stokes Saleeby. As a young man of 16, he went to the University of South Carolina where he received his undergraduate degree and earned a degree from the University of South Carolina School of Law. He was a president of Pi Kappa Alpha and vice president of the student body.

After graduating from law school he returned to Hartsville and set out a shingle to practice law. He built a renowned law firm and had been vigorous in his attempts to provide fair and responsible representation to his clients.

He was elected to serve in the S.C. House of Representatives beginning in 1951 at the age of 24, as Strom Thurmond was leaving the Governor's Mansion and Jimmy Byrnes was coming in, and served until 1958. There is presently no other legislator serving who was in the General Assembly at that time. He was elected to serve his first term in the Senate beginning in 1973 and has served since then. His seniority placed him on major committees. He formerly chaired the Senate Banking and Insurance Committee, was vice chair of the Senate Judiciary Committee and the Senate Education Committee, and served on the Senate Labor, Commerce and Industry Committee and the Senate Ethics Committee.

He was an active member of St. Bartholomew's Episcopal Church, as well as serving his community, region and state over his lifetime from the Piedmont to the low country. He was a member of Omicron Delta Kappa, Hartsville Masonic Lodge No. 173, Hartsville Moose Lodge No. 1770, Kiwanis Club, Scottish Rite, Darlington County Red Fez, and was Potentate of the Omar Temple in 1968. He was a charter member of the Hartsville Junior Chamber of Commerce, lifelong member of the Carolina Alumni Association, former member of Hartsville Advisory Board of South Carolina National Bank, past president of the S.C. Trial Lawyers' Association, former member of Board of Directors of the S.C. Bar Association, former trustee of Byerly Hospital, University of South Carolina Trustee 1961-1972, 1988, trustee of Coker College 1976, and member of Board of Visitors Clemson University 1976. He was Hartsville Man of the Year in 1981 and Distinguished Citizen of the Year in 2000 for the Pee Dee Area Council of the Boy Scouts of America.

Surviving are his wife of 51 years, Willie Meta Calcutt Saleeby of Hartsville; son and daughter-in-law, Edward E. and Donna Stanton Saleeby Jr. of Hartsville; daughters and sons-in-law, Kay S. and Glenn Bouknight, Holly S. and Buddy Atkins, all of Columbia; grandchildren, Edward E. Saleeby III, Nathan S. Saleeby, Caleb C. M. Saleeby, James Caleb Atkins; brother and sister-in-law, William Eli and Margaret Saleeby.

Memorials may be made to the Thad E. Saleeby Scholarship Foundation, University of South Carolina, 208 Osborne Building, Columbia, SC 29208.

MIRIAM HUGHES

Funeral services for Miriam Miller Hughes, 85, were held at 11 a.m. Monday, July 8, 2002, at St. Bartholomew's Episcopal Church. The Rev. Ted Duvall officiated, directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to Holy Trinity Episcopal Church, Haddon and Fern Avenues, Collingswood, NJ 08108.

Mrs. Hughes, widow of Harold Hughes, died Thursday, July 4, 2002. Born in Gloucester, N.J., she was a daughter of the late John E. and Margaret Bell Miller. She was a member of St. Bartholomew's Episcopal Church and was active in the Byerly Hospital Auxiliary. In 1997, she was named Hospital Auxilian of the Year.

Surviving are her son and daughter-in-law, Ken and Paddie Hughes of Hartsville; grandsons, James K. Hughes of Denver, N.C., Richard E. Hughes of Richmond, Va., and Sean M. Hughes of Hartsville and two great-grandsons.

BETH FLYNN

Memorial services for Jane Elizabeth "Beth" Dalrymple Flynn, 38, were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 6, 2002, at St. Bartholomew's Episcopal Church. The Rev. Ted Duvall officiated with Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home in charge. Memorials may be made to York Place, c/o St. Bartholomew's Episcopal Church, 103 Campus Dr., Hartsville, SC.

Mrs. Flynn died Wednesday, July 3, 2002. Born in Darlington County, she was a daughter of William Henry and Margaret Jane King Dalrymple. She was a member of St. Bartholomew's Episcopal Church and was employed with LabCorp.

Surviving are her husband, Jamie Flynn of Hartsville; son, James Patrick Flynn of Hartsville; father and mother of Hartsville; brother, W. H. "Billy" Dalrymple of Hartsville; and maternal grandmother, Margaret Hill King Armstrong of Hartsville.

ETTA MAE MOBLEY

ABERDEEN, MS. - Funeral services for Etta Mae Gilreath Mobley, 94, were held at 11 a.m. Friday, June 28, 2002, in the Tisdale-Lann Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Mark Stokes, the Rev. Chris Thomas and the Rev. R. D. Cline, officiating. Burial was in the Lebanon Cemetery in the Darracott Community, directed by Tisdal-Lann Memorial Funeral Home of Aberdeen.

Mrs. Mobley died Wednesday, June 26, at the Pioneer Community Hospital in Aberdeen, Miss. She was born Sept. 16, 1907, in the Darracott Community to Green Holley and Sara Lower Gilreath. She was a retired sales clerk having worked at Peltz, J. C. Penney, and Bergmans. She attended the Darracott School and was a member of the First Baptist Church in Aberdeen where she was a member of the Dorcas Sunday School class.

She is survived by her husband of 67 years, Charles Edward Mobley of Aberdeen, Miss., to whom she was married on Nov. 24, 1934; three daughters, Jannette and husband Bill Peugh, Sara and husband Charles Poss, both of Aberdeen, Gloria Jackson and husband Joe of Hartsville; one son, Charles Edward Mobley Jr. and wife Sharon of Concord, N.C.; nine grandchildren, Chuck Mobley and wife Sharon of Concord, N.C., Jane Mobley Ramsey and husband Bill of Raleigh, N.C., Stephen Peugh and wife Joanna of Shannon, Miss., Susan Peugh of Cumming, Ga., Greg Poss of Aberdeen, Brian Poss and wife Wanda of Aberdeen, David Poss and wife Kelly of Amory, Miss., Todd Jackson and wife Tammie of Hartsville, Jennifer Jackson Riggins and husband Danny of Hartsville; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Mobley was preceded in death by her parents; an infant daughter; one sister, Dora Gilreath Holladay; and five brothers, Clarence, Claude, Franklin, Maurice and John Henry Gilreath.

Pallbearers were her grandsons; honorary pallbearers were Dr. Arthur Brown, Janice Wilkinson, Pioneer Community Hospital Second Floor Staff, Todd Jackson and Danny Riggins.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church, PO Box 545, Aberdeen, MS 39730.

WADE B. JACKSON JR.

BISHOPVILLE - Funeral services for Wade Berry Jackson Jr., 68, were held at 5 p.m. Monday, July 8, 2002, at the Hartsville Chapel of Norton Funeral Home with burial in the Patrick Cemetery.

Mr. Jackson died July 4, 2002. He was born in Dillon County, a son of the late Wade B. and Clara Burkett Jackson Sr. He worked for Alexo Textile in Rockingham and later with Springs Mills in Laurel Hill, N.C.

Surviving are his wife, Carolyn Cranford Jackson of Bishopville; sons, Victor Jackson of Charlotte, N.C. and Richard Jackson of Wadesboro; daughters, Wanda Parrish and Renee Clark of Rockingham; brothers, Robert and Andrew Jackson of Hartsville; 12 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Hospice of the Pee Dee, 555 E. Cheves St., Florence, SC 29501.

ALPHONSO BESS

DARLINGTON - Funeral services for Alphonso "Al" Bess, 62, were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, July 6, 2002, at Lawson Grove Baptist Church with burial following in Darlington Memory Gardens, directed by Hines Funeral Home.

Mr. Bess died Tuesday, July 2, at McLeod Regional Medical Center after an illness. He was born in Lee County, one of five children of Susanna Reese Bess and the late LeRoy Bess. After moving with his family to Darlington County early in life, he was educated in the Darlington County public schools. For many years he worked as a brick mason and later took employment with the E.I. Dupont Industry of Florence where he continued to work faithfully for more than 25 years before his retirement. "Al," along with his family, was first a member of the Lawson Grove Baptist Church. While continuing to serve his church faithfully and he was also affiliated with the Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church. He was previously married to Cora Ishmael, and to this union four children were born.

He was also a member of the Friendship Masonic Lodge No. 17, the E. B. Burroughs Royal Arch No. 7, the Pee Dee Consistory No. 197 as well as the Pee Dee United Elks Lodge No. 1679.

Survivors include a wife, Thressa H. D. Bess of the home; his mother, Mrs. Susanna Reese Bell of Darlington; three sons, Joseph (Thresa) Bess and the Rev. James Alonzo (Linda) Bess, both of Florence and Jamie G. Dunston of Stavanger, Norway; two daughters, Mrs. Arbradella B. Williamson of Darlington and Mrs. Sheila Hicks of Jonesboro, Ga.; three brothers, McKenzie (Mary) Bess, Hazel (Sara) Bess and Albert Bess, all of Darlington; one sister, Mrs. Alice Gee of Darlington; 12 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
