THELMA B. MARTIN

DARLINGTON - Funeral services for Thelma Beatrice Murray Martin, 50, were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, July 9, 2002, in Cherry Grove Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. E. B. Burroughs, pastor, officiating. Burial followed in the church Cemetery, directed by Mitchell-Josey Funeral Home of Darlington.

Mrs. Martin died Friday, July 5, at her residence after an illness. She was born in Darlington County, a daughter of the late Aaron "Son Man" and Elvira Dupugh Murray Sr. She attended Darlington County public schools graduating from St. John's High School Class of 1971. She was a member of Cherry Grove Baptist Church serving as a member of the Senior Missionary Society, the E. B. Burroughs Ushers (past president), the Adult Sunday school class, the Sunday school certification class, a member of the Helping Hand Club, and BTU teacher. She was employed at MSD (formerly Nytronics) for the past 26 years.

Survivors include her husband, Benjamin Martin of the home; a daughter, Angela C. Martin of the home; three sisters, Thomasina Booker, Christina (George) Thomas and Georgia Mae Murray all of Patterson, N.J.; two brothers, Rudolph (Marvel) Murray and Earl Murray, both of Hartford, Conn.; a mother-in-law, Thelma M. Martin; brothers and sisters-in-law; aunts; uncles; a godson, Dontavis Lucky; special friends Brenda (Jerome) Goodson and Carrie Muldrow; nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by a daughter, Theresa Ann Martin.

WILLIE H. SANSBURY

DARLINGTON - Funeral services for Willie Herman Sansbury, 81, were held at 2 p.m. Friday, July 5, 2002, in the chapel of Belk Funeral Home. Chapel services were held at 11 a.m. Monday, July 8, in Kent Forest Lawn Cemetery in Panama City, Fla., directed by Belk Funeral Home.

Mr. Sansbury died Wednesday, July 3, in a Darlington hospital. He was born in Florence, a son of the late Willie Herman and Myrtle Thornell Sansbury. He served his country with the United States Army during World War II and had retired from the paper industry. Mr. Sansbury enjoyed the outdoors, especially fishing, and loved children. He was a member of Faith Free Will Baptist Church.

Surviving are his wife, Rudell W. Sansbury of Darlington; three sons, Richard A. (Karla) Sansbury of Austin, Texas , Larry Scott Sansbury of Panama City, Fla., and Donald Wayne Sansbury of Winston-Salem, N.C.; one daughter, Shirlee Ann (Mark) Beach of Decarter, Ala.; two step-sons, Dr. Marshall (Robin) Webb and Tommy (Teresa) Webb, both of Darlington; two step-daughters, Linda (Dennis) Marotta and Jackie (Roger) Weatherford, both of Darlington; 19 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; also a sister, Mildred (Hilton) Griggs of Bishopville; and a sister-in-law, Betty Sansbury of Columbia.

Memorials are suggested to Faith Free Will Baptist Church Youth, 1309 Lamar Highway, Darlington, SC 29532.

EDNA C. SCOTT

TIMMONSVILLE - Funeral services for Edna Carroway Scott will be held at 3 p.m. today, July 10, 2002, in the Hartsville Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses. Burial will be in the Plaza Memorial Gardens in Lamar, directed by Hines Funeral Home.

Mrs. Scott died Saturday, July 6, at her residence after an illness. She was born in Darlington County, a daughter of the late Classie Josey Carroway and the late Louis Grooms Sr. She was the wife of the late Moses Scott. She received her education in the Darlington County public schools and was a member of the Darlington Congregation of Jehovah's Witnesses.

Survivors are her children, Patricia (Marion) King of Timmonsville, Thelma (Rufus) Brown of Lamar, Lola (Herbert) Corbett of Philadelphia, Pa., Eleanoris (Alphonso) Graves of Florence, Johnny (Robin) Scott of Timmonsville, and Earlene (Lavanual) Mark of Lydia; four brothers, Foster (Naomi) Jackson and Louis (Rozena) Grooms of Hartsville, Robert (Ola Mae) Grooms of Lamar, and Eddie Ray (Girlean) Grooms of Mt. Vernon, N.Y.; three sisters, Betty Mayo of Lamar, Bonnie (Lawrence) Evans of Springfield Gardens, N.Y., and Frances (Pete) Hawkins of Florence; 13 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; brothers and sisters-in-law, Elliott and Lucille Scott, Rosa S. Matthews, Williree Dobson, Jeanette Scott, Carolyn (Miller) Jordan and Nathan (Generline) Scott.

MARGARET LUCAS

McBEE - Margaret Lucas, 76, died Thursday, July 4, 2002, at Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center after an illness. Arrangements will be announced by Young & Young Funeral Home.

The family will receive friends at the residence of her son-in-law and daughter, Deshawn and Carolyn Wilson, 599 W. Broad Street, Darlington.

ELLIE SPARROW

Funeral services for Ellie W. Sparrow, 83, will be held at 4 p.m. today, Wednesday, July 10, 2002, at Swift Creek Baptist Church. The Rev. Peter Rivera and the Rev. Dr. Ted Mears will officiate with burial in the church cemetery directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to Swift Creek Baptist Church, 413 N. Center Rd., Hartsville, SC 29550.

Mr. Sparrow died Monday, July 8, 2002. Born in Darlington County, he was a son of the late Jesse Dantzler and Norma Gandy Sparrow. He was a member of Swift Creek Baptist Church, the Woodrow Lewis Sunday School class and a former deacon. He was retired from Sonoco Products Co. with 48 years of service, was a member of the Old Timers Club, and was a World War II veteran.

Surviving are his wife, Bobbie Flowers Sparrow of Hartsville; son and daughter-in-law, Billy and Joy Sparrow of Hartsville; daughters and sons-in-law, Ellen Sue and Colonel Rogers of Lexington, Madelyn and William Springs of Charleston, Ada and Rick Lambert of Greenville; brother, Marion Sparrow of Hartsville; sister, Hazel Darrell of W. Columbia; 12 grandchildren; 13-great grandchildren.

JUDGE GEORGE FRANKLIN COLEMAN JR.

WINNSBORO - Retired Judge George Franklin Coleman, Jr., 84, died Tuesday, July 9. A memorial service celebrating the life of Judge Coleman will be held at 4 p.m. today, Friday, July 12, at St. John's Episcopal Church in Winnsboro, with the Rev. Charles Christopher Clements officiating. The family will receive friends at the residence, 503 N. Zion Street.

Active pallbearers will be W. E. Haslett Jr., A.G. Ellison III, David W. Kennedy, W. Logan Trotter, C. Clarke McNair, Edward C. Moore and L. Ellis Johnson.

Honorary pallbearers will be Sen. John A. Martin, Mr. H. Norwood Obear, Judge Solomon Blatt Jr., Mr. C.C. Arial Jr., Mr. Thomas E. McCutchen, Judge A. Lee Chandler, Mr. Charlie Gibbs and Mr. Dan Henderson.

Born Aug. 21, 1918, in Winnsboro, Judge Coleman was the son of the late George F. Coleman Sr. and Henree Buchanan Coleman, and was the grandson of Dr. and Mrs. John Creighton Buchanan, Sr. He was married to Lucy Davis Coleman for 53 years. He grew up in Winnsboro, and Montgomery, Ala., and graduated from Sidney Lanier High School in Montgomery, and from the University of South Carolina in 1940. While at USC, he was a member of the Carolina Student Forum, president of the student body, a member of Omicron Delta Kappa, the USC Debating Team, Kappa Sigma social fraternity, the freshman basketball team, and was selected for membership in "Who's Who in American Colleges and Universities."

Judge Coleman entered the University of South Carolina Law School in 1940, but his law school career was interrupted by World War II. He entered the U.S. Army as a private in 1942, serving in the European and North African theaters. He was honorably discharged as a major in the U.S. Air Force in 1946. Judge Coleman returned to the University of South Carolina Law School and received his law degree in 1946. He was admitted to the South Carolina Bar in 1947. While in law school, he was member of the Wig and Robe.

Following his graduation, Judge Coleman began practicing law in Winnsboro. He was elected to the South Carolina House of Representatives in 1948, was chairman of the Fairfield County Democratic Party, president of the Fairfield County Jaycees, and was appointed solicitor of the Sixth Judicial Circuit by Gov. George Bell Timmerman. He was re-elected to this office three times, serving a total of 16 years as chief prosecuting officer for the Sixth Judicial Circuit.

Judge Coleman was a member of the executive committee of the South Carolina Bar Association, vice president of the University of South Carolina Alumni Association, former vestryman of St. John's Episcopal Church, chairman of the Fairfield County Library Commission and former member of the Winnsboro Rotary Club. In May, 1975, Judge Coleman was elected Circuit Judge for the Sixth Judicial Circuit. He was a member of the Supreme Court Commissions on Judicial Standards. He also attended the National College of the State Judiciary at the University of Nevada, Reno, in 1975, and the American Academy of Judicial Education at the University of Colorado, Boulder, in 1978. Judge Coleman served continuously as a circuit court judge until his retirement in March 1984. Following his retirement, he enjoyed raising cattle with his sons at Davis-Monticello Farms in Monticello.

Judge Coleman is survived by his wife, of the home; three sons, George F. Coleman III, and daughter-in-law, Patricia; Amos Davis Coleman; and Creighton B. Coleman and daughter-in-law Marion, all of Winnsboro; and a daughter, Lucy C. McCoy, and son-in-law Peter, of Hartsville. He is also survived by eight grandchildren: Peter M. McCoy Jr., George Coleman McCoy, Hope Tyler Coleman, George Franklin Coleman IV, John Estes Coleman, Creighton Buchanan Coleman Jr., Chandler McNair Coleman, and Marion Walker Coleman. He was predeceased by a brother, Dr. John Buchanan Coleman of Amarillo, Texas .

Memorials may be made to Richard Winn Academy, PO Box 390, Winnsboro, SC 29180, or St. John's Episcopal Church, 301 W. Liberty Street, Winnsboro, SC 29180.

JOHN HEUSTESS

Graveside services for John Evans Heustess, 82, were held at 4 p.m. Wednesday, July 10, 2002, at Magnolia Cemetery with the Rev. Dr. Bob Cline officiating and Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home in charge. Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church Building Fund, Box 69, Hartsville, SC 29551.

Mr. Heustess, widower of Tommy Moore Heustess, died Monday, July 8, 2002. Born in Darlington County, he was a son of the late John Evans and Maggie Lampley Heustess. He was a member of the First Baptist Church and served in the U. S. Navy during World War II. He was retired from Sonoco Products Co. and was a member of the Old Timers Club.

Surviving are his sons and daughters-in-law, Jack and Linda Heustess of Rock Hill, Rick and Diane Heustess of Campobello, Bill and Becky Heustess of Hernando, Miss.; grandchildren, Parker Heustess, Austin Heustess, Rhonda Chapman, Mandy Heustess; and special friend, Jean Blackwell.

MIRIAM HUGHES

Funeral services for Miriam Miller Hughes, 85, were held at 11 a.m. Monday, July 8, 2002, at St. Bartholomew's Episcopal Church. The Rev. Ted Duvall officiated, directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to St. Bartholomew's Episcopal Church, 103 Campus Dr., Hartsville, SC 29550.

Mrs. Hughes, widow of Harold Hughes, died Thursday, July 4, 2002. Born in Gloucester, N.J., she was a daughter of the late John E. and Margaret Bell Miller. She was a member of St. Bartholomew's Episcopal Church and was active in the Byerly Hospital Auxiliary. In 1997, she was named Hospital Auxilian of the Year.

Surviving are her son and daughter-in-law, Ken and Paddie Hughes of Hartsville; grandsons, James K. Hughes of Denver, N.C., Richard E. Hughes of Richmond, Va., and Sean M. Hughes of Hartsville.
