THERON L. DeWITT

DARLINGTON - Funeral services for Theron L. DeWitt Sr., 94, were held at 3 p.m. Thursday, July 11, 2002, at Pine Grove United Methodist Church. Interment followed in the church Cemetery, directed by Belk Funeral Home.

Mr. DeWitt died Tuesday, July 9, in a local hospital after an illness. He was born on Nov. 20, 1907, in Florence County, the son of the late William Roland and Dora Cooper DeWitt. He was preceded in death by his wife, Elma Lee Moore DeWitt in 1993. Mr. DeWitt graduated from Florence High School in 1926. In 1939 he and his family moved to a farm in the High Hill-Pine Grove community of Darlington County. In the ensuing years, he became a successful farmer and businessman. The operation that he began was the foundation for DeWitt Farms, Inc. In addition to participating in agriculture and community organizations, Mr. DeWitt was an active member of Pine Grove United Methodist Church. He will be remembered for his kindness to his family and members of the community.

Surviving are two sons, Alvin E. (Betty Jordan) DeWitt and Theron L. (Sharon Scott) DeWitt, both of Darlington; two daughters, Mary "Polly" DeWitt (Henry G.) Hoffmeyer of Charleston and JoAnne DeWitt (John L.) Sharpe of Hillsborough, N.C.; nine grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Alice Jones of Black Mountain, N.C., and Leora Ward of Effingham.

Memorials may be made to Pine Grove United Methodist Church, c/o Mrs. Mary Godbold, 505 N. Pinckney St., Timmonsville, SC 29161.

HATTIE JACOBS

Mrs. Hattie Jacobs died Wednesday, July 10, 2002, at Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center after an extended illness. Funeral services are incomplete and will be announced by Hines Funeral Home.

CALDONIA H. CAMP

BESSMER CITY, N.C. - Funeral services for Caldonia H. Camp will be held at 4 p.m. on Saturday, July 13, 2002, at St. James Missionary Baptist Church in Bessmer City, N.C. Viewing is scheduled prior to the funeral services, between the hours of 12 and 3:30 p.m., directed by Withrow's Funeral Home of Kings Mountain, N.C.

Mrs. Camp died unexpectedly on Tuesday, July 9, at her home. She was the daughter of the late Nathan and Willie B. Hill.

Survivors are one daughter, Jean C. Floyd of Syracuse, N.Y.; two sons, James Douglas Camp of Bessmer City, N.C., and Donnel Camp of Hartsville; one brother, John Henry Benson of Winston Salem, N.C. and three sisters, Margaret H. Woods of Bessmer City, N.C., Gladys Watson of Jamaica, N.Y., and Naomi H. Thomas of Greensboro, N.C.; six grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

MARGARET C. LUCAS

Funeral services for Margaret C. "White" Lucas, 76, were held at 4 p.m. Tuesday, July 9, 2002, at New Hopewell Baptist Church. Burial was in Centerville A.M.E. Church Cemetery, directed by Young & Young Funeral Home.

Mrs. Lucas died Thursday, July 4, at Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center after an illness. She was born in Darlington County, a daughter of the late Henry and Byrda Brock Campbell. She was a member of Centerville A.M.E. Church and attended Union Baptist Church. She was educated in Darlington County public schools where she attended Rosenwald High School in Society Hill.

Surviving are four daughters, Barbara (Alphonso) Damon, Wanda Campbell, both of McBee, Carolyn (Deshawn) Wilson of Darlington and Linda (Roger) Graham of Hartsville; three sons, David (Jeanette) Lucas Jr., and Billy (Kathleen) Campbell, both of Hartsville and Frankie (Petula) Campbell of Rock Hill; 23 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren; five sisters, Pauline Gee, Edell Campbell, Louise Grimes, Janie Thomas, all of Hartsville, and Edith Thomas of Bridgeport, Conn.; a brother, David Campbell of Hartsville.

MARY H. GRIGGS

Funeral services for Mary Hunter Griggs, 83, were held at 3 p.m. Thursday, July 11, at Antioch Baptist Church. Burial was in Antioch Cemetery, directed by Norton Funeral Home.

Mrs. Griggs died Tuesday, July 9. She was born in Darlington County, a daughter of the late Lamar and Sally O'Neal Hunter. She was a member of Antioch Baptist Church.

Surviving are her husband, Murray L. Griggs Sr. of Hartsville; two sons, Murray L. (Celia) Griggs Jr. and Jimmy L. (Connie) Griggs, both of Hartsville; six grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

GEORGE B. LEWIS

Funeral services for George B. Lewis, 77, will be held at 2 p. m. Saturday, July 13, 2002, at the chapel of Norton Funeral Home with the Rev. Brad Lynch officiating. Burial will be in Magnolia Cemetery. Visitation will be tonight, July 12, from 6 to 8 at the funeral home.

Mr. Lewis died Wednesday, July 10. He was born in Darlington County, a son of the late Edward and Ella Mae Iseman Lewis. He was retired from Sonoco Products Co. after 46 years of service, a member of the Old Timers Club, American Legion Post No. 35, member of Fourth Street Baptist Church and was retired from the National Guard.

Surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, Michael (Lisa) Lewis of Leesville; a daughter and son-in-law, Cheryl Beasley (David) Hartsell of Hartsville; sister, Mary Haney Keith of Hartsville; four grandsons, T. J. Beasley, Justin Beasley, Tyler Beasley and George Greyson Lewis; one great-grandson, Tristan Beasley; and special friend, Edna Rauch of Scranton.

TERRY JOSEY

DARLINGTON - Funeral services for Alford Terry Josey, 81, were held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 16, 2002, in the chapel of Belk Funeral Home. Interment followed in Hebron United Methodist Church Cemetery.

Mr. Josey was born in Lee County, the son of the late Chester and Julia Scarborough Josey. He was a retired rural route carrier for the U.S. Postal Service and also a retired employee of Clanton's Auto Auction. Mr. Josey served his country during World War II, and went on to retire from the U.S. Air Force. He also retired as a sergeant major from the S.C. National Guard. Mr. Josey was involved in many local and civic organizations including past master of St. David's Masonic Lodge No. 72, Knight Templar, was a Shriner currently serving as ambassador for Omar Temple, and was an associate member of Hejaz and Jamil Shrine Temples. He was a past president of the Darlington County Red Fez Club, a member of the Pee Dee Shrine Club, currently served on the Board of Governors of the Shrine Bowl, past president of the Darlington NCO Club, a member of the American Legion, and was a charter member of the VFW and served in several leadership positions within the organization. Mr. Josey was also a member of Hebron Methodist Church as well as an active member and current president of the Asbury Men's Sunday School Class of Trinity United Methodist Church.

Surviving are his wife, Zena McKenzie Josey of the home; a son, Mac (Vickie) Josey of Darlington; a grandson, Stephen Josey of Darlington; and a sister, Julia Wendlinger of Cocoa Beach, Fla.

Memorials may be made to the Myelodysplastic Syndromes Foundation or to the Shriner's Children's Hospital.

ALVIN DAYS

Alvin "Sonny" Days died Monday, July 15, 2002, at his residence after an illness. Funeral services are incomplete and will be announced by Hines Funeral Home. The family will receive friends at the home of his parents, Alvin Sr. and Vivian Days of 326 Lincoln Ave.

MARGARET R. PUGH

SOCIETY HILL - Funeral services for Margaret Rush Pugh were held at 4 p.m. Tuesday, July 16, 2002, in Round O Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Michael McMillian, pastor, officiating. Burial followed in the church Cemetery, directed by Mitchell-Josey Funeral Home of Darlington.

Mrs. Pugh died Friday, July 12, in a Darlington hospital after an illness. She was born in Darlington County, a daughter of the late Charlie and Rachel Rush. She was the widow of Marion Pugh.

She attended Darlington County public schools and at the age of 75, she received her high school diploma from Rosenwald High School. She was a life member of Round O Baptist Church where she served as a member of the Missionary Society, the pastor's aid and any other capacity when needed. She was the mother of the church.

Survivors include three children, Mrs. Marie Pugh of Conway, Maxie (Vivian) Rush of Society Hill and Hezekiah (Cleo) Rush of Darlington; four grandchildren she reared as her own, Ollie B. James, Joyce Watson; two deceased, Ethel Rush and Arthur Rush; 24 grandchildren; 53 great-grandchildren; 39 great-great-grandchildren and one great-great-great-grandchild; three nieces, Mrs. Della Wilds, Ms. Joann Ezekiel and Ms. Mildred Ezekiel.
