HATTIE J. JACOBS

Funeral services for Hattie J. Jacobs, 93, were held at 2 p.m. Monday, July 15, 2002, in Nathan Temple Fire Baptize Holiness Church. Burial was in Mt. Calvary Baptist Church Cemetery, directed by Hines Funeral Home.

Mrs. Jacobs died Wed., July 10, at Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center after an illness. She was born in Lee County, a daughter of the late Ed Josey and Lula Griffeth Josey. She was married to the late Willie Jacobs. She was first a member of Mt. Calvary Baptist Church after moving to Hartsville and later joined the Nathan Temple Fire Baptize Holiness Church, where she was the assistant pastor.

Survivors are a host of nieces and nephews of Hartsville.

RUTH BURNEY

Graveside services for Ruth Ousley Burney, 86, were held at 1 p.m. Friday, July 12, 2002, at Magnolia Cemetery. The Rev. Dr. Bob Cline officiated with Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home in charge. Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church Building Fund, Box 69, Hartsville, SC 29551.

Mrs. Burney, widow of Bill Burney, died Wednesday, July 10, 2002. She was a daughter of the late Robert Lide and Nellie McInvaill Ousley and was a member of First Baptist Church.

Surviving are a niece, Mildred Ousley King of Hartsville; nephews, Bill Dailey and Howard Ousley; great niece, Lisa Mullis; great-great niece, Amy Talbert; great-great-great nephews, John and Allen Talbert.

JACE M. JONES

Funeral services for Jace Merritt Jones, 18, will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, July 18, 2002 at Brown Pennington Atkins Funeral Home Chapel. Elder Phillip Braddock will officiate with burial in Magnolia Cemetery directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home. The family will receive friends Wednesday, July 17, 2002 from 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Hartsville High School Baseball Team, 703 Lewellyn Ave., Hartsville, SC 29550 or to the Hartsville Heat Baseball Team, c/o Robin Skinner, 1253 West Lydia Hwy., Hartsville, SC 29550.

Mr. Jones died Tuesday, July 16. Born in Florence, SC, he was a son of Jody Montgomery Jones and Lisa Brown Jones. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. He graduated from Hartsville High School in 2002 and was a member of the baseball team.

Surviving are his father and mother, of Hartsville, SC; sister, Tyler Jones; brother, Jent Jones both of Hartsville; special friends, Allison Sturdivant and Angela Oliver, also of Hartsville; paternal grandparents, Jackie and Jackie Jones of Hartsville; maternal grandparents, Newet Laverne Brown of Hartsville, Frances and Edward Mixon of Hartsville. He was preceded in death by his brother, Justin Jones.

ALVIN DAYS JR.

Funeral services for Alvin "Sonny" Days Jr., 60, will be held at 12 noon Saturday, July 20, 2002, at Jerusalem Baptist Church. Burial will be in Greenlawn Cemetery, directed by Hines Funeral Home. The family will receive friends at the home of his parents, Alvin Sr. and Vivian Days of 326 Lincoln Ave.

Mr. Days died Monday, July 15, at his residence after an illness. He was born in Hartsville, a son of Alvin and Vivian Campbell Days. He was a 1959 graduate of Butler High School. He attended Morris College in Sumter on a football scholarship. After two years at Morris College, "Sonny" relocated to the Washington , D.C., area, where he lived for 35 years. While there he worked in the shoe sales industry, eventually owning his own business in shoe sales for 15 years. He relocated to his native home of Hartsville in 1996 and for the past five years he was employed at the Hartsville IGA as a stocking clerk. He was a member of Spiritual Growth Ministries in the Centerville Community of Hartsville. He was a commissioner for The Hartsville Housing Authority.

Survivors in addition to his parents, Alvin and Vivian Days Sr., are three daughters, Vanessa (Rod) Days Pegram of Bowie, Md, Tressie Days of Landover, Md., and Christi Days of Hyattsville, Md.; a son, Steven Days of Columbia; two sisters, Gracie Days Dolly of Richmond, Va., and Carolyn (Samuel) Days Franklin of Columbia; a brother, Carl (Paula) M. Days of Hartsville; and an aunt, Catherine Days of Hartsville.

LILLIE GEE MURRAY

Funeral services for Lillie Gee Murray, 92, were held at 4 p.m. Thursday, July 18, 2002, at Savannah Grove A.M.E. Church with the Rev. J. C. Dukes officiating. Burial was in the church Cemetery, directed by Young & Young Funeral Home.

Mrs. Murray died Sunday, July 14, at Morrell Convalescent Center. She was born in Darlington County, a daughter of the late Edmond and Alice Marcus Gee. She received her education in the public schools of Darlington County. Mrs. Murray was a member of Savannah Grove A.M.E. Church, the Senior Choir and the Missionary Society.

Surviving are four daughters, Annie Fox of Naranja, Fla., Thomasina Booker, Christina (George) Thomas and Georgia Mae Murray, all of Patterson, N.J.; two sons, Rudolph (Marvel) Murray and Earl Murray, both of Hartfield, Conn.; a sister, Edna Lowery of Darlington; three special grandchildren that she raised, Lillie Fox of Hartsville, Carlyle Fox Jr. of Florence and Michael Fox of Perrine, Fla.; a special son-in-law, Carlyle Fox Sr. of Hartsville; nine grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

LOURETHA D. SHIRLEY

Funeral services for Louretha Dobson Shirley, 76, will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, July 20, 2002, in Harold L. & Dorothy J. Young Memorial Chapel with the Rev. J. J. Backus, officiating. Burial will be in Greenlawn Cemetery, directed by Young & Young Funeral Home.

Mrs. Shirley died Wednesday, July 10, in New York City after an illness.

LUCAS TOLSON

Funeral services for Lucas Eugene Tolson Jr., 51, will be held at 3 p.m. today, Friday, July 19, 2002, at Kellytown Baptist Church. The Rev. Gary Anderson will officiate with burial in Kellytown Baptist Church Cemetery directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the Kellytown Baptist Church, 2609 Kellytown Rd., Hartsville, SC 29550.

Mr. Tolson died Tuesday, July 16, 2002. Born in Darlington County, he was a son of Christine Newsome Tolson and the late Lucas Eugene Tolson Sr. He was a member of South Hartsville Baptist Church.

Surviving are his son, Lucas E. Tolson III of Hartsville; mother, of Hartsville; and sister, June Tolson Hyman of Hartsville.

MIRIAM G. REAVES

SUMTER - Funeral services for Miriam Gainey Reaves, 77, were held at 3 p.m. Sunday, July 20, 2002, at First Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. Jeff Burns officiating. Burial was in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery, directed by Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home of Sumter.

Mrs. Reaves died Thursday, July 18, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born in Darlington County, she was a daughter of the late Lewis Gainey and the late Ruth McInville Gainey. Mrs. Reaves was a member of First Baptist Church and a retired lunch room manager with the Berkeley County School System.

Surviving are her husband of Sumter; two sons, James Robert Reaves of Noblesville, Ind., and Thomas Eugene Reaves of Sumter; three brothers, Claude Gainey of Bethune, Glenn Gainey of Lexington and Lyndall Gainey of Hartsville; four grandchildren, Linda Cuttino, Kelly Reaves, Ryan Reaves and Chris Reaves.

Pallbearers were Mike Griggs, David Gainey, Allen Powell, Marion Zeigler, Barry Lewis and Bryan Gainey.

Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church Vision 2000 Fund, 107 E. Liberty St., Sumter, SC 29150 or to the American Cancer Society, 128 Stonemark Lane, Columbia, SC 29210.
