IRENE HUDSON

DARLINGTON — Graveside funeral services for Irene Hudson, 81, were held at 11 a.m. Monday, Aug. 26, 2002, in Newman Swamp Cemetery, Lamar, directed by Belk Funeral Home.

Miss Hudson died Saturday, Aug. 24, in a Darlington nursing home. She was born in Florence, a daughter of the late James Lee and Cora Lee Hagood Hudson. She retired from Dixie Cup after 32 years, was a member of the First Free Will Baptist Church and had taught the elementary Sunday School class for 20 years.

Surviving are her sister, Bertha Windham of Florence.

Memorials are suggested to First Free Will Baptist Church, PO Box 441, Darlington, SC 29540.

RICHARD L. DAVIS

DARLINGTON — Funeral services for Richard Ligon Davis, 89, were held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 25, 2002, at Trinity United Methodist Church with interment following in Grove Hill Cemetery, directed by Belk Funeral Home.

Mr. Davis died Friday, Aug. 23, in a Florence hospital. He was born in Darlington County, son of the late Dr. Olin B. and Lelia Hammerly Davis. He was a 1934 graduate of the MUSC School of Pharmacy. He served his country as a Naval corpsman in the United States Marines during World War II in the Pacific Theatre. Mr. Davis practiced pharmacy in Darlington for 49 years and was owner and operator of Davis Drug Store. He was a member of the Kiwanis Club, a 50–year member of the American Legion, and life member of the South Carolina Pharmaceutical Association. He served many years on the Darlington County Health Board and as a secretary/treasurer of Pee Dee FM Amateur Radio Club. He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church and served as trustee and treasurer for many years.

Surviving are his wife of 55 years, Carol Haigler Davis of Darlington; two sons, Dr. Robert B. (Libby) Davis of Florence and Richard H. Davis of Darlington; three granddaughters, Amanda Suzanne, Allison Anne and Courtney Carol; a nephew, George B. Davis; and nieces, Elloeen D. Ward and Roberta D. Mixon.

Memorials are suggested to Trinity United Methodist Church, PO Box 16, Darlington, SC 29540.

INFANT JACKSON

Graveside services for infant Andrea Jackson were held at 5 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 24, 2002, in New Hopewell Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery, directed by Young & Young Funeral Home.

Andrea, the infant daughter of LaTonja M. Jackson and Dereck D. Sneed, died Thursday, Aug. 22, in Atlanta, Ga.

Surviving, other than her mother of Hartsville and father of Bossier, La., are her maternal grandmother, Betty A. Jackson of Hartsville; her paternal grandmother, Jennifer L. Jones of Bossier, La.; and her paternal great–grandmother, Cora Sneed of Bossier, La.

LOUISE LUCKEY

Louise Luckey, 60, died Sunday, Aug. 25, 2002, at McLeod Regional Medical Center after an illness. Arrangements will be announced by Young & Young Funeral Home.

LINDA EMMA WARD

Memorial services for Linda Emma Ward, 45, will be held at 4 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 29, 2002, in Harold L. & Dorothy J. Young Memorial Chapel directed by Young & Young Funeral Home.

Ms. Ward died Sunday, Aug. 25, at her residence after an illness. She was born in Darlington County, a daughter of Edward Ward Sr. and the late Jessie Mae Thomas. She was a graduate of Butler High School. She enrolled in Job Corps where she received a certificate in nursing.

Surviving, other than her father of Hartsville, are a sister, Monica Ward of Hartsville; three brothers, Harry Thomas, Edward (Jeanette) Ward and Dennis (Elizabeth) Ward, all of Hartsville; eight nieces, two nephews; three aunts; three uncles; and a special friend, Lorenzo Mack of Hartsville.

HOYLE E. JOHNSON

Funeral services for Hallie Elizabeth Johnson were held at 3:30 p.m. Monday, Aug. 26, 2002, at Second Baptist Church with burial in Greenlawn Cemetery, directed by Hines Funeral Home.

Mrs. Johnson died Tuesday, Aug. 20, at her home after an illness. She was born in Lee County, a daughter of the late John and Rosa Pate Blakney. She was a retired cook, having worked at Coker College in Hartsville for many years.

Survivors include five daughters, Mattie Stevenson, Sylvia Johnson, Johnnie Mae Johnson, Dorothy Johnson and Yvonne Johnson, all of Hartsville; seven sons, Wendell (Denise) Johnson of McBee, John (Garcenia) Johnson Jr., Billy (Gwendolyn) Johnson, General Lee Johnson, Harvey (Barbara) Johnson, Hercules Johnson and James (Margaret) Johnson, all of Hartsville; a sister–in–law, Manzie Wheeler of Hartsville; 37 grandchildren and 46 great–grandchildren.

RAYMOND SUGGS JR.

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — Funeral services for Raymond N. Suggs Jr., 70, formerly of Hartsville, were conducted at 3 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 25, 2002, at Village Baptist Church in Fayetteville, N.C., by Dr. Bruce O. Martin and the Rev. Daniel Flynn. A graveside service was conducted by the Rev. David Foxworth on Monday, Aug. 26, at Magnolia Cemetery in Hartsville, directed by Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home.

Mr. Suggs died on Thursday, Aug. 22, in Fayetteville, N.C. Born in Florence County, he was the son of the late Raymond N. Suggs Sr., and Bessie Blizzard Suggs. He was a 1950 graduate of Hartsville High School. He received a bachelor of business administration from Wake Forest College in 1954. He served his country in the U.S. Army from 1954 to 1956 in Germany. He was married to Jane Foxworth Suggs, formerly of Bishopville, for 43 years. Mr. Suggs worked in the purchasing department of Black & Decker (U.S.) Inc. for 27 years before his retirement. He was an active member of Village Baptist Church and the Men's Bible Class in Sunday School. An avid sports fan, his loves were baseball and Wake Forest basketball.

Surviving are his wife of Fayetteville; and two daughters, Nancy Suggs and Linda Suggs, also of Fayetteville.

BERT MATTHEWS

Graveside services for Hybert Larue “Bert” Matthews, 76, were held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 27, 2002, at Douglas Presbyterian Church Cemetery in Lancaster with Dr. Jeri Perkins officiating, directed by Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home.

Memorials may be made to the Hospice of the Pee Dee, 555 E. Cheves Street, Florence, SC 29506, First Presbyterian Church, 213 W. Home Ave., Hartsville, SC 29550 or Alzheimer's Disease, PO Box 7044, Columbia, SC 29202.

Mr. Matthews, husband of Patsy Barton Matthews, died Saturday, Aug. 24, 2002. Born in Florence County, he was a son of the late Horace Zingle and Nannie Boyd Matthews. He was retired from Sonoco Products Co. and a member of the Old Timers Club. He served in the Army in World War II. He was a member of Hartsville Lodge No. 173, member and past patron of Hartsville Chapter No. 91, order of The Eastern Star, and the Hartsville Chapter of the Gideons. Surviving are his wife of Hartsville; son and daughter–in–law, Ron and Sherry Matthews of Hartsville; sister, Sara Powell of Washington , Pa.; grandchildren, Amber Matthews, Haley Matthews and Landon Matthews all of Hartsville; nieces and nephews.

J.F. KELLY

Graveside services for John Frank “J.F.” Kelly, 42, were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 25, 2002, at Magnolia Cemetery with the Rev. Charles Boswell officiating, directed by Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home.

Mr. Kelly died Thursday, Aug. 22, 2002. Born in Columbia, he was a son of Joan Urwiler Kelly and the late Major Anderson Kelly Jr. Mr. Kelly was employed with Wal–Mart.

Surviving are his sisters, Karen K. DeBerry of Panama City, Fla., Diane K. Cassidy, Shirley K. Mozingo and Wanda K. Wingo, all of Hartsville; brothers, Major A. “Andy” Kelly III, Charles W. Kelly, Michael D. Kelly and Michael J. Kelly, all of Hartsville; paternal grandfather, John E. Wilhelm.
