BUCK JOHNSON

Funeral services for William Lee “Buck” Johnson, 74, were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 1, 2002, at Prospect United Methodist Church. The Rev. Bud Boatwright officiated with burial in the church cemetery directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home.

Mr. Johnson died Friday, Aug. 30. Born in Chesterfield County, he was a son of the late Calhoun J. and Annie Hill Johnson. He was a member of Prospect United Methodist Church and the Disabled American Veterans. He served in the United States Army and retired from McLean Trucking Company after 35 years of service. After his retirement he enjoyed gardening.

Surviving are his wife, Mable Rose Johnson of Hartsville; son, Joel Johnson of Hartsville; daughters, Betty Ann Woods of Dunfries, Va., Peggy Elaine Crowley of Bishopville, Mable Lee Byrd of Hartsville; sisters, Ruth Kelly of Hartsville; Emma Jane Mixon of Bishopville; brother, C. B. Johnson of Pawtucket, R.I.; step-brother, James Johnson of Hartsville; step-sisters Cindy Johnson Griggs of Hartsville; Vandetta Johnson Speckman of Fort Mill; Sandra Johnson Clodfelter of Winston Salem, N.C., Ziora Johnson Ritter of Roanoke, Va., Jo Johnson Hanna of Florence, Betty Johnson Lundy of Forsythe, Ga.; seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his sisters, Annie Basket and Jessie Matthews.

ROOSEVELT CAMPBELL

Roosevelt (Shane) Campbell, 69, died Sunday, Sept. 1, 2002, in Carolinas Hospital System after an illness. Arrangements will be announced by Young & Young Funeral Home.

LAURA P. SUAREZ

McBEE – Funeral services for Laura “Cat” Phillips Suarez will be at 3 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 2, 2002, in Antioch Baptist Church, with burial in the church Cemetery, directed by Young & Young Funeral Home.

Mrs. Suarez died Saturday, Aug. 31, from injuries received in an automobile accident. She was born Nov. 12, 1942, in Darlington County, a daughter of Martha Wilkins Phillips and the late Isaiah Phillips Sr. She attended Butler High School and was employed with Mar-Mac Dupont in McBee. She was a member of Antioch Baptist Church, Gospel Choir, the Mass Choir, Pastor Aid Club, Senior Missionary Society and vice president of the Usher Board.

Surviving other than her mother of McBee are her husband, Jesus Suarez of McBee, a daughter Amy Lou Phillips of McBee; six sisters, Gwendolyn (Robert) McCoy of Hartsville, Stella (Eddie) Turner, Sherlby (Willie) Caldwell, Ruby (Edward) Isaac, Joan Hough and Bonnie Williams, all of McBee; four brothers, Iaiah (Betty) Phillips Jr., William (Helen) Phillips, and Ennis (Terry) Phillips, all of Hartsville and Henry (Bonnie) Phillips of Lancaster, a grandson, Nazareth Isaiah Phillips of McBee; father and mother-in-law, Jesus Sunchez Suarez and Socosso Maldonado Suarez of Hayward, Ca.; aunts, uncles, and a host of nieces, nephews and other close relatives and friends.

CHARLES H. HAWKINS

BISHOPVILLE– Funeral services for Charles H. Hawkins, 65, were held at 4 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 2, 2002, in Wayside Baptist Church with Rev. William Taylor and Rev. Danny Waynerwright officiating. Burial was in the church Cemetery, directed by Hancock-Elmore-Hill Funeral Home of Bishopville.

Mr. Hawkins, husband of Bertie Brigman Hawkins, died Saturday, Aug. 31, at McLeod Regional Medical Center in Florence. Born in Florence County, he was a son of the late Arthur Hawkins and the late Hannah Parnell Hawkins. He was a member of Wayside Baptist Church and was the former owner of Hawkins and Son Tractor Repair. He was also formerly employed by Payne and Williams John Deere with 25 years of service. He was a U.S. Army veteran.

Survivors include his wife, two sons, Charles H. “Chuck” Hawkins and wife, Dana, and Art (Laura) Hawkins, all of Bishopville; a daughter, Bobbie Jean Howle of Hartsville; two sisters, Mary (Knox) Newman of Sumter; Nettie Grace (Ed) Thornton of Hartsville; his mother-in-law, Bessie Brigman of Hartsville; six grandchildren, Lance and Shane Howle, Hannah and Harrison Hawkins, and Wade and Kyle Hawkins; several nieces and nephews; and special friends, Bobby Merck, Jack Watford and Jack Kelly.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Eddie Hawkins.

Pallbearers were Mike Hawkins, Steve Hawkins, Wayne Newman, Buddy Hill, Jim King, Ronnie Boykin and Gerald Arrants.

Honorary pallbearers were Butch Edwards, Jimmy King, Alan Shirley, Bobby Skinner, James Brigman Jr., Dave Kennedy, Garrett Smith and Frank Oats.

Memorials may be made to the Lee County Rescue Squad, 119 Hospital Square, Bishopville, S.C. 29010.

FANNIE McPHERSON

LAMAR - Mrs. Fannie Bell Enoch Woods McPherson of 741 McIver Road, Darlington, S.C. died on Friday, August 30, 2002, at McLeod Regional Medical Center. Funeral services will be held at John Wesley United Methodist Church Wednesday, Sept. 4, 2002. Burial will take place in the church cemetery. Professional services directed by Hines Funeral Home of Lamar. The family will receive visitations at the residence.

Mrs. McPherson was the daughter of the late Willie and Essie Enoch. She was raised on a farm called “Enoch Hill” in Darlington County and was educated in the public schools of the county. She was married to the late Mack Woods and they were blessed with 15 children. Twelve preceded her in death. She later was married to the late Collin McPherson. She was an active member of John Wesley United Methodist Church.

She leaves to cherish her memories one daughter, Lula (Robert) Aaron of Bishopville; two sons, Isaac (Nellie) Woods of Darlington, and Burnett (Clarise) Woods of Madison, Ga.; a brother, Ralph Enoch of Jacksonville, Fla.; 40 grandchildren; 46 great grandchildren; 19 great great grandchildren.

EUNICE GAINEY SIMS

DARLINGTON - Services for Eunice Gainey Sims were held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 1, 2002, in New Hopewell Missionary Baptist Church. Burial was in Mount Zion Baptist Church Cemetery, directed by Young & Young Funeral Home.

Mrs. Sims, 64, died Saturday, Aug. 24, 2002, at Calvary Hospital in Bronx, New York. She was born in Darlington County, a daughter of the late James Jett Sr. and Eula Graham James. She was converted, baptized and joined New Hopewell Missionary Baptist Church. After moving to New York she joined Judea Union Baptist Church. She later moved her membership to Allen African Methodist Episcopal Church where she served as a Willing Worker. She was a graduate of Rosenwald High School, and attended Cosmetology School in Durham, N.C.

Surviving are her husband, Moses Sims Jr. of New York, N.Y.; a son, Jerry Sims of New York, N.Y.; two step children, Deborah Wanger and Cornell Sims of Florence; two grandchildren, Tyref Sims of Fort Lauderdale, Fla. and Bryce Sims of Jamaica, N.Y.; one godchild, Michelle Richards of Brooklyn, N.Y.; seven sisters, Gertrude (Eddie) Burns, Alma (Frank) McPhail, Gwendolyn (Jack) Gattison, Gloria (Eddie) Burns, Alma (Frank) McPhail, Gwendolyn (Jack) Gattison, Gloria (Maze) Littles, Vermell Antrum all of Darlington, Carolina (Addis) Mazyck of Tampa, Fla. and Annie Mazyck of Hartsville; four brothers, La Grand (Vicky) Smith of Seven, Md., James Graham of Wyandanch, N.Y., Henry (Sally) Swinney of Darlington and Willard (Barbara) Jett of Timmonsville; four aunts, one uncle, 10 brothers-in-law, four sisters-in-law; very special nieces, Annette Evans, Eunicer Ford and Dee McPhail, other nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

FLOYD S. PERDUE

Graveside services for Floyd S. Perdue, 72, were held Saturday at 11 a.m. from the Magnolia Cemetery, directed by Norton Funeral Home. The Rev. Ed Griggs officiated.

Mr. Perdue was born in Chesterfield County, a son of the late Bert and Alma Odom Perdue. He was retired from Sonoco Products Co., member Old Timers Club, member of Whispering Pines Baptist Church.

Surviving are his wife, Ruth Perdue of Hartsville; sons, Wendell Perdue of Patrick and Douglas Perdue of Myrtle Beach; sisters, Clara Brown of Patrick and Shirley Rabon of Loris; a brother, James Perdue of Hartsville; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Robert Perdue.

Memorials may be made to the charity of one’s choice.

ANTHONY TRUNCELLITO

DARLINGTON - Anthony S. Truncellito, 73, died Wednesday, Aug. 28, 2002, in a Florence hospital. Services were held at 6 p.m. on Friday in the chapel of Belk Funeral Home.

Mr. Truncellito was born in Union City, New Jersey, son of the late Anthony and Mary Miller Truncellito. He served his country in the United States Army and had retired from Wellman Industries. He was a member of the Darlington Moose Lodge, the Knights of Columbus and St. Anthony’s Catholic Church.

Surviving are his wife, Lorraine Colilla Truncellito of Darlington; four sons, Bernard Yucker of Brick, N.J., Paul Truncellito of Darlington, Anthony Truncellito Jr. of Hamilton, N.J., and Michael Yucker of Florence; eight daughters, Laurie Bright of Darlington, Shirley Artauskas of Redford, N.J., Elizabeth Frances of East Windsor, N.J., Sharon Yucker of Midland Park, N.J., Mary Cooper of New River, Va., Toni Ann Yucker of Garfield, N.J., and Elaine Truncellito and Crisann Smith, both of Darlington; two brothers, Frank Truncellito of Florence and Salvatore Truncellito of Darlington; one sister, Mary Henke of Darlington; 19 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, one great great-grandchild and a number of step grandchildren.

Mr. Truncellito was preceded in death by two daughters, Florence Grafeld and Debra Yucker; a son, Robert Yucker; a brother, Paul Truncellito; and a sister, Catherine Gaida.
