PAULINE KENNEDY

Graveside services for Mary Pauline Funderburke Kennedy, 87, were held at 5 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 31, 2002, in Magnolia Cemetery. The Rev. Dr. Bob Cline officiated and Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home was in charge. Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church Building Fund, Box 69, Hartsville, S.C. 29551.

Mrs. Kennedy died on Thursday, Aug. 29. Born in Chesterfield County, she was a daughter of the late Ira B. and Pearl Boan Funderburke Sr. She was a member of the First Baptist Church and the Deborah Sunday School class. She was retired from the Hartsville Mill.

Surviving are brothers, Grady R. Funderburke of Lake View, S.C., and Ronnie E. Funderburke of Hartsville; and nieces and nephews.

FRANCES B. MONROE

Funeral services for Frances Butler Monroe will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 10, 2002, from the First Southern Methodist Church. Burial will be held at 4:30 p.m. in Bensalem Presbyterian Church Cemetery in Eagle Springs, N.C., with the Revs. Bill Johnson and Dan Thigpen officiating, directed by Norton Funeral Home. Visitation will be tonight, Wednesday, from 6 to 8 pm. at the funeral home.

Mrs. Monroe was born in Sampson County, N.C., a daughter of the late Rev. John Homer Butler and Grace Cheshire Butler of Parkersburg, N.C. Mrs. Monroe was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother and a member of the Southern Methodist Church, and a past matron of the Hartsville Order of the Eastern Star.

Surviving are her husband, Paul A. Monroe of the home; two daughters, Pam Monroe and spouse, Jim Garand of Baton Rouge, La., and Jo M. Herndon of Shelby, N.C.; a son, Mike Monroe and spouse Lisa Monroe of Biscoe, N.C.; eight grandchildren, Kate, Brian and Carson Garand, Christopher, Andrew and Alexandria Monroe, Ally and Chet Herndon; six sisters, Faye Lewis, Peggy Norris, Janice Rich, Jean Kimball,Sylvia Carter and Edna Morris; two brothers, John Butler and Horace Butler, and a host of dear friends.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Southern Methodist Youth Camps c/o Rev. Tom Owens, P. O. Box 39, Orangeburg, S.C. 29116-0039.

JOHN H. SANDERS

DARLINGTON – Funeral services for John H. Sanders will be held at 4 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 5, 2002, in the Lee Street Church of God, Darlington, with the Rev. Juanita Doe officiating. Burial will follow in Darlington Memorial Cemetery, directed by Mitchell-Josey Funeral Home.

Mr. Sanders died Sunday morning, Sept. 1, at his residence after an illness. He was born in Darlington County (Lamar), a son of the late Burrell and Matilda Parrott Sanders. He received his formal education in the Darlington County public schools. He served his country in the U.S. Army and was honorably discharged. As a young man, he moved to Maryland and then to New York, where he was employed by Mason Tender of New York. He was a member of Amsterdam Church of God in New York. After retirement he returned to Darlington and rejoined Lee Street Church of God where he was a member of the Brotherhood.

Survivors include his wife, Rachel Sanders of New York; a sister, Bertha Hensley of Wilmington, N.C.; a host of nieces, nephews and cousins; a special cousin, Palmer Sanders of Florence.

EDNA R. SUGGS

DARLINGTON — Funeral services for Edna Register Suggs, 91, were held at 4 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 10, 2002, at Indian Branch United Methodist Church with interment following in the church Cemetery, directed by Belk Funeral Home.

Mrs. Suggs died Sunday, Sept. 8, in a Florence hospital. She was born in Darlington County, a daughter of the late L. C. and Rachael Elizabeth Register. She was married to the late Harvey Franklin Suggs. She was a housewife and member of Indian Branch United Methodist Church and the Lottie McSwain Sunday School Class.

Surviving are one son, Johnny C. (Louise) Suggs of Darlington and one daughter, Louise (H.E.) Parnell of Hartsville; seven grandchildren; 12 great–grandchildren and seven great–great–grandchildren; also one brother, Charlton Register of Starkville, Miss., and one sister, Eva Mae Plummer of Lamar.

Mrs. Suggs was preceded in death by a son, Willard F.Suggs, and three brothers, Woodrow, Monroe and Laurie Register.

Memorials are suggested to Indian Branch United Methodist Church, PO Box 224; Darlington, SC 29540.

THEL BRIDGES

Ethel Bridges Walters, 90, died Sept. 7, 2002, at Chesterfield Convalescent Center in Cheraw. Services were held Monday, Sept. 9, 2002, at 2 p.m. at Hickory Grove Baptist Church. Interment followed in Chatham Memorial Gardens in Cheraw, directed by Norton Funeral Home of Cheraw. Memorials may be made to Hickory Grove Baptist Church, 2516 Hickory Grove Road, Wallace, SC 29596.

Born in Montgomery County, N.C., she was the daughter of the late Thomas and Ida Jenkins Bridges. She was the wife of the late William Henry Horne and James Bradford Walters. She was a member of Hickory Grove Baptist Church.

She is survived by daughters Mary L. Garris of Cheraw and Jerrie Jordan of Pageland; seven grandchildren; and 11 great–grandchildren.

JAMES B. BRADLEY

STEWARDSVILLE, N.J. — James B. Bradley, 83, died Sunday, Sept. 8, 2002, in Stewardsville, N.J., after an illness. Arrangements will be announced by Young & Young Funeral Home.

REGINALD G. MACK

Funeral services for Mr. Reginald G. Mack were held on Monday, Sept. 9, 2002, at 3:30 p.m. in the Gilbert Hines Memorial Chapel with Bishop Vera Davis officiating. Burial followed in Greenlawn Cemetery, directed by Hines Funeral Home, Inc.

Mr. Mack died on Thursday, Sept 5, after an illness. Born in Darlington County, he was a son of Gus Bailey and Delia Mack McCoy. He was educated in the public schools and was a graduate of Hartsville High School with the class of 1984.

He was a very industrious individual and enjoyed doing a good job of whatever he tackled. He worked several jobs, starting as a farmer in the Flinn Road Community. Later he worked as a gardener, yard maintenance worker as well as with masonry construction. He was well liked by all who knew him because of his loving ways and pleasant smile. He was kind and giving in his relationships with others.

Survivors include his mother, Mrs. Delia McCoy of Riverdale, Ga.; his father, Gus Bailey of Harrisburg, Pa.; two sisters, Roberta McCoy, of Atlanta, Ga., and Juanita McCoy of Riverdale, Ga.; two brothers, James Ponder of Riverdale, Ga., and Robert McCoy of Hartsville; grandmother, Mrs. Rosa Duckson of Hartsville; grandfather, Edmond Bailey of Hartsville; three aunts, Shirley Hickman, Dora Lee Hickman and Lilly Mae Benbow, all of Hartsville; three uncles, Rodney Hickman, James Bailey and Marion Bailey all of Hartsville.

ABBIE DALE McKAY

DARLINGTON — Funeral services for Abbie Dale McKay, 65, were held at 3:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 7, 2002, at The Church in the Lord Jesus Christ of the Apostolic Faith, Inc. Burial was in the church Cemetery, directed by Young & Young Funeral Home.

Mrs. McKay died Wednesday, Sept. 4. She was born in Lee County, a daughter of the late Blease and Blanch McKnight Peterson. She received her education in the public schools of Darlington County. She was a member of The Church in the Lord Jesus Christ of the Apostolic Faith, Inc., Senior Missionary and Senior Choir.

Surviving are her husband, Prince McKay of Darlington; eight step–children, Geraldine Fox, Phillip McKay, Preston McKay, Billy McKay, Claperta Samuel, Lisha Reed, Rubin McKay and Elizabeth Simon; two sisters, Bertha Peterson and Inez McDowell; a brother, Isaac Peterson Sr.; aunts, sisters–in–law, grandchildren, great–grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews and other close relatives and friends.

MYRTIS ELLEN ODOM

DARLINGTON — Funeral services for Myrtis Ellen McDonald Odom, 85, were held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 8, 2002, in the chapel of Belk Funeral Home with interment following in Darlington Memory Gardens.

Mrs. Odom died Thursday, Sept. 5. She was born in Darlington County, a daughter of the late John Martin and Effie Mangrum McDonald. She was married to the late Henry Odom. She was a member of the Darlington Senior Citizens Club, the Senior Citizen Good Time Band, the Bell Choir and a member of First Baptist Church.

Surviving are two sons, Henry Thomas (Diana) Odom and Robert Allen (Jeannette) Odom, both of Darlington; 12 grandchildren and 23 great–grandchildren; one sister, Mable Brewer of Florence; and one brother, Calvin McDonald of California.

Mrs. Odom was preceded in death by a sister, Myrtle Moore.
