ROBERT JOHANSSON

Memorial services for Robert Ivar (Robby) Johansson, 42, were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 29, 2002, at St. Luke United Methodist Church directed by Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home.

Mr. Johansson died at his home on Thursday, Sept. 19. He was born in New York City on Aug. 3, 1960, and was the son of Ivar Victor and Mary Lee Smith Johansson. He graduated from Hartsville High School and earned a paralegal degree from Florence–Darlington Technical College. He was an avid sports fan and enjoyed working with plants and flowers. He was a member of St. Luke United Methodist Church.

Surviving are his father of Sweden and mother of Hartsville; brother, J. Eric Johansson of Charlotte, N.C.; uncles and aunts, J. Roy and Verdie Smith of Hartsville, Jule and Elizabeth Smith of Cheraw and Terah Smith Davis of Florence. He was preceded in death by his uncle, Charles W. Smith, and his aunt, Emma Smith Wadsworth.

Memorials may be made to St. Luke United Methodist Church, American Diabetes Association or to the American Heart Association.

ERNEST E. TRUETTE SR.

NORTH MYRTLE BEACH — Ernest Edward Truette Sr., 83, died Thursday, Sept. 26, 2002, at Grand Strand Regional Medical Center. He was born on Nov. 9, 1918, in the Oats community of Darlington County.

Mr. Truette resided many years in Charlotte, N.C., and later in Harrisburg, N.C., before moving to North Myrtle Beach. He was predeceased by his parents, Whitman Dawson Truett and Nannie Lloyd Truett of Hartsville; three brothers and a sister and his beloved wife of 51 years, Lucille “Cille” Shaw Truette of Kershaw. He was a U.S. Army veteran for four years prior to WWII and served four years in the U.S. Army during WWII. He retired from Cunningham Wholesale Co. in Charlotte, N.C., in 1960. He was a Master Mason for 50 years at Phalanx Lodge #31 AF & AM in Charlotte, a 32nd degree Scottish Rites Master Mason and a noble brother of the Oasis Shrine Temple. He was a life member of the American Legion, VFW and Disabled American Veterans, having served in the North Atlantic Campaign in WWII. Mr. Truette was a member and deacon of Pitts Baptist Church in Harrisburg, N.C.

Survivors include three sons, Benny Edward “Eddie” Truette and his wife Joyce of North Myrtle Beach, Danny “Dan” Michael Truette and his wife Linda of Charlotte, N.C., Ernest Edward “Earl” Truette Jr. of North Myrtle Beach; five grandchildren, Eric Michael Truette, Kristopher Karl Truette, both of Charlotte, Elizabeth Dawn Truette of Lexington Park, Md., Mary Katherine Truette of Chambersburg, Pa., and Madeline–Elaine “Maddie” Lucille Truette of North Myrtle Beach; and two great–granddaughters, Miss Sydney Austin Greene and Olivia Elizabeth Grund, both of Chambersburg, Pa.

A memorial service at Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home and burial alongside his wife, Lucille, in Magnolia Cemetery will be announced at a later date.

The family requests that memorials be offered to Phalanx Masonic Lodge #31, 4740 Randolf Rd., Charlotte, N.C. 28211 or The Fatherhood Resource Center, PO Box 3050, Shallote, N.C. 28459.

WILSON LEE LOVETTE

DARLINGTON — Wilson Lee Lovette, 58, died Thursday, Sept. 26, 2002, at his home after an illness. Belk Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Lovette was born in Asheville, N.C., a son of Woodrow Wilson Lovette and the late Ruby Thurman Lovette. He was a construction worker and Baptist by faith.

Surviving in addition to his father, are his wife, Joanne Langley Lovette; two sons, Wilson and Brian Lovette; two step–children, Dawn Kyle and Brian McLaughlin; brother, Curtis Nothey; sister, Shirley Baetjer; half–sister, Billie Love; two grandchildren Christopher and Karen; four step–grandchildren, Eric, Benjamin, Sam and Noah; close friend, James Turner, and beloved pets, Charlie's Girl and Weinee.

DAVID WASHINGTON JR.

Funeral services for David Washington Jr., 53, will be held at 3 p.m. today, Oct. 2, 2002, in Harold L. & Dorothy J. Young Memorial Chapel. Burial will be in Brailey Chapel Baptist Church Cemetery, directed by Young & Young Funeral Home.

Mr. Washington died Saturday, Sept. 28, from injuries received from an automobile accident. He was born in Darlington County on April 18, 1949, a son of the late John and Gretha Mae Brailey Washington . He received his education in the public schools of Darlington County.

Surviving are seven sisters, Lillie Bell Mitchell, Theolia Pettigrew, Margaret Young, Virginia Washington and Faye Sena Washington , all of Hartsville, Memberee Williams of Queens, N.Y., and Tommie Ann Washington of Raleigh, N.C.; four brothers, Lee Ernest Washington of Hartsville, Isaiah Washington of Winston–Salem, N.C., John Washington Jr. of Landover, Md., and Charles Washington of Queens, N.Y.; a host of nieces, nephews and other close relatives and friends.

DAVID LEE BUNCH

DARLINGTON — Funeral services for David Lee Bunch, 35, will be held at 3 p.m. today, Wednesday, Oct. 2, 2002, in the the chapel of Kistler Funeral Home, with the Revs. Allen Lynch and Sammie Byrd officiating. Burial will follow in Grove Hill Cemetery.

Mr. Bunch died Monday, Sept. 30, in a Florence hospital after an illness. He was born in Bamberg, a son of Samuel O. Bunch and the late Doris Juanita Burbage. He attended Vision Assembly Church and served in the U.S. Navy. Mr. Bunch worked on the Crash Recovery Team at Darlington Raceway. He enjoyed riding his Harley and loved animals, especially his dog, “Sally.” Mr. Bunch was predeceased by a brother, Ronnie Bunch.

Survivors include his wife, Pamela G. Bunch of the home; two daughters, Nikki Bunch of the home; and Erin (Tony) McManus of Lamar; one son, Gabriel Gomish of Augusta, Ga.; three brothers, Michael (Alicia) Burbage and Robert Bunch, both of Darlington, and Sammy Bunch of Orangeburg; and two sisters, Nita Burbage Godbold of Darlington and Katherine “Kitty” Wright of Columbia.

ETHEL S. WILLIAMS

DARLINGTON — Funeral services for Ethel Samuels Williams were held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 1, 2002, at Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. D. L. Hughes, pastor, officiating. Burial followed in Faith Memorial Gardens, directed by Mitchell–Josey Funeral Home of Darlington.

Mrs. Williams died Friday, Sept. 27, in a Florence hospital after a long illness. She was born in Darlington County, a daughter of the late Lawrence and Theodosia Davis Samuels. She was the widow of Deacon Jerome Williams. She received her formal education in the Darlington County public schools. She was a life member of Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church where she served in the choir, as deaconess, past vice president of the Missionary Society and past Sunday school teacher. In the community she was a former member of the Social Heart Club.

She was preceded in death by brothers and sisters, David Samuel, Alma Bacote, McIver Samuel, Clara Rogers, Mable Williams and Lawrence Samuel Jr.

Survivors include a devoted niece, Mrs. Lucia Rogers Johnson of Darlington; other nieces, nephews, grand–nieces and grand–nephews; sisters and brothers–in–law and cousins.

JAMES CROCKER

DARLINGTON — Memorial services for James R. Crocker, 81, were held at at 10:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 1, 2002, at St. Luke Lutheran Church in Florence, directed by Belk Funeral Home.

Mr. Crocker died Sunday, Sept. 29, in a Florence hospital. He was born in Wayne County, N.C., son of the late Nathan E. and Mary Best Crocker. He served his country in the United States Navy in the South Pacific during World War II and was retired from the South Carolina Department of Highways and Public Transportation. He worked with NASCAR with Goodyear Tire Co. Mr. Crocker was a past member of the Lions Club and a member of St. Luke Lutheran Church.

Surviving are one son, James R. Crocker II of West Lafayette, Ind.; three sisters, Mary C. Davis of Myrtle Beach, Eleanor Herman of Hickory, N.C., and Loraine Adderholt of Morehead City, N.C.; and two grandchildren, Samantha and Jason Crocker.

Memorials are suggested to St. Luke Lutheran Church, 900 King Ave., Florence, SC 29501.

JOHN H. HICKS

Memorial services for John Hampton Hicks, 55, will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 6, 2002, in the chapel of Norton Funeral Home.

Mr. Hicks died Thursday, Oct. 3. He was born in Darlington County, a son of the late Otis Harold and Marjorie DuBose Hicks. He was owner of Hicks Frames.

Surviving are his wife, Ann Brown Hicks of Kershaw; a son, Don Harvey Hicks of Kershaw; two brothers, Harold Hicks and Donnie Palmiter; two sisters, Elizabeth Amerson and Plyla Langston; and favorite companion, Spike.

Memorials may be made to the Flat Creek Baptist Church, 3737 Victory Rd., Kershaw, SC 29067.
