CHRISTOPHER E. KIRKLAND

LYDIA – Funeral services for Christopher Eric Kirkland were held at 3 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 3, 2002, at Mt. Tema Baptist Church. Burial was in the St. John United Methodist Church Cemetery with professional services directed by Hines Funeral Home, Inc.

Christopher died on Saturday, Sept. 28, 2002, at Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center after an illness. H e was the son of Mechella Elliott and Eric Kirkland. He attended Washington Street Elementary School, where he was in the first grade.

He leaves to cherish memories his mother, Mechella Elliott of the home; father, Eric Kirkland of Lamar; one sister, Felicia Kirkland of the home; maternal grandmother, Hallie Jones; and paternal grandparents, Sylvester and Flossie Kirkland.

ALICE JORDAN CARTER

Funeral services for Alice Thompson Jordan Carter, 87, will be held at 4 p.m. today, Friday, Oct. 4, 2002, at The First Church of the Nazarene. The Rev. Darryl Bogatay will officiate with burial in Darlington Memory Gardens Cemetery directed by Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the First Church of the Nazarene.

Mrs. Carter, widow of Theo Jordan and John Carter, died Wednesday, Oct. 2, 2002. Born in Sumter County, she was a daughter of the late Clarence and Julia Anna Benehaley Thompson. She was a member of the First Church of the Nazarene and was retired from Byerly Hospital. She was a loving mother and grandmother.

Surviving are her sons and daughters–in–law, Donald O. and Libby Jordan, Wayne and Jean Jordan all of Hartsville; step–sons, Freddie Carter, Joseph Carter, Carlos Carter all of Patrick, John Carter of Sea Grove, N.C., Carson Carter of Smithfield, N.C., Jack Carter of Trinity, N.C., Cecil Carter of Asheboro, N.C.; step–daughters, Barbara Dixon and Edith Brown both of Patrick; brother, Gene Thompson of Pennsylvania ; sisters, Beatrice Harrington and Thelma Wood of Darlington, Mildred Keospel of Sumter; and numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren.

ADGER L. WATKINS SR.

DARLINGTON – Funeral services for Adger L. Watkins Sr., 68, were held at 3 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 3, 2002, at Temple Free Will Baptist Church with interment following in Grove Hill Cemetery, directed by Belk Funeral Home.

Mr. Watkins died Tuesday, Oct. 1, at Oconee Memorial Hospital in Seneca after an illness. He was born in Oconee County, son of the late Jesse Irby and Emma Watkins. He had retired after 42 years of employment with Fluor Daniel Construction Co. and was a member of Temple Free Will Baptist Church.

Surviving are his wife, Sonja Brey Watkins of Darlington; his son, Adger L. (Wendy) Watkins Jr.; his daughter, Shawn (Bryant) Calcutt; his grandson, Bry Calcutt, all of Darlington; one brother, B. W. (Helen) Watkins of Seneca; four sisters, Helen Nix of Seneca, Gertrude Leard and Earline Patterson both of Westminster, Lorna (Bill) Carter of Moncks Corner and a brother–in–law, Ivo Brey of Owensboro, Ky. Also surviving are a number of nieces, nephews and friends, including a special friend, Phyllis Raffa.

Memorials are suggested to Temple Free Will Baptist Church Building Fund, PO Box 287, Darlington, SC 29540.

ERNEST E. TRUETTE SR.

NORTH MYRTLE BEACH — Ernest Edward Truette Sr., 83, died Thursday, Sept. 26, 2002, at Grand Strand Regional Medical Center. He was born on Nov. 9, 1918, in the Oats community of Darlington County.

Mr. Truette resided many years in Charlotte, N.C., and later in Harrisburg, N.C., before moving to North Myrtle Beach. He was predeceased by his parents, Whitman Dawson Truett and Nannie Lloyd Truett of Hartsville; three brothers and a sister and his beloved wife of 51 years, Lucille “Cille” Shaw Truette of Kershaw. He was a U.S. Army veteran for four years prior to WWII and served four years in the U.S. Army during WWII. He retired from Cunningham Wholesale Co. in Charlotte, N.C., in 1960. He was a Master Mason for 50 years at Phalanx Lodge #31 AF & AM in Charlotte, a 32nd degree Scottish Rites Master Mason and a noble brother of the Oasis Shrine Temple. He was a life member of the American Legion, VFW and Disabled American Veterans, having served in the North Atlantic Campaign in WWII. Mr. Truette was a member and deacon of Pitts Baptist Church in Harrisburg, N.C.

Survivors include three sons, Benny Edward “Eddie” Truette and his wife Joyce of North Myrtle Beach, Danny “Dan” Michael Truette and his wife Linda of Charlotte, N.C., Ernest Edward “Earl” Truette Jr. of North Myrtle Beach; five grandchildren, Eric Michael Truette, Kristopher Karl Truette, both of Charlotte, Elizabeth Dawn Truette of Lexington Park, Md., Mary Katherine Truette of Chambersburg, Pa., and Madeline–Elaine “Maddie” Lucille Truette of North Myrtle Beach; and two great–granddaughters, Miss Sydney Austin Greene and Olivia Elizabeth Grund, both of Chambersburg, Pa.

A memorial service at Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home and burial alongside his wife, Lucille, in Magnolia Cemetery will be announced at a later date.

The family requests that memorials be offered to Phalanx Masonic Lodge #31, 4740 Randolf Rd., Charlotte, N.C. 28211 or The Fatherhood Resource Center, PO Box 3050, Shallote, N.C. 28459.

JESSIE CROWLEY

FLORENCE — Graveside services for Jessie Hendrix Crowley, 82, were held at 4 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 8, 2002, at New Providence Baptist Church with the Rev. Dale Broadway officiating, directed by Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home.

Mrs. Crowley died Sunday, Oct. 6, 2002. Born in Darlington County, she was a daughter of the late Grover Cleveland and Mary Hogge Hendrix. She was a member of College Park Baptist Church and was retired from Dixon Drug Co. in Florence.

Surviving are her step–son, Harry Crowley Jr. of Hampton; step–daughter, Pat Deeter of Cape Canaveral, Fla.; sisters–in–law, Dixie Hendrix of Hartsville and Grace Hendrix of Raleigh, N.C.

MARGARET GARDNER

McBEE — Funeral services for Margaret Blackwell Gardner, 85, will be held at 4 p.m. today, Wednesday, Oct. 9, 2002, at Union United Methodist Church. The Rev. Bobby Parsons will officiate with burial in the church cemetery directed by Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the Union United Methodist Church Building Fund, P. O. Box 398, McBee, SC 29101.

Mrs. Gardner, widow of Joe P. Gardner, died Monday, Oct. 7, 2002. Born in Chesterfield County, she was a daughter of the late John B. and Rosa Northcutt Blackwell. She was a member of Union United Methodist Church, the United Methodist Women, the Adult II Ladies Sunday School class, and was retired from CokerÕs Department Store.

Surviving are her son and daughter–in–law, Kent and Blanche Gardner of McBee; sister and brother–in–law, Effie B. and Bernice Hodge of Hartsville; and grandson, Kelly Gardner.

DOT S. DeWITT

Funeral services for Dorothy S. “Dot‘ DeWitt, 79, were held at 4 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 6, 2002, at West Hartsville Baptist Church with the Rev. Tim Tomlinson officiating. Burial followed in Magnolia Cemetery, directed by Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to West Hartsville Baptist Church, 1003 West Carolina Ave., Hartsville, SC, 29550.

Mrs. DeWitt, widow of Monroe M. DeWitt, died Friday, Oct. 4, 2002. Born in Florence County, she was a daughter of the late George D. and Louella Gardner Straup. She was a charter member of West Hartsville Baptist Church.

Surviving are her sons and daughters–in–law, Jimmy and Jennie DeWitt of Hartsville, M. Gregg and Kay DeWitt of Florence; sisters, Betty Fuller of Bessemer, Mich., Georgia Neely of Dallas, Texas ; and three grandchildren, Kacee DeWitt, Jenna DeWitt, Parker DeWitt.

MARVIN GAINEY

Funeral services for Marvin Woodrow Gainey, 59, were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 6, 2002, at Clyde Church of God with the Revs. Don Childers and Wallace Strickland officiating. Burial was in Clyde Church of God Cemetery directed by Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to Clyde Church of God Building Fund, 1813 Catawba Springs Rd., Hartsville, SC 29550.

Mr. Gainey died Thursday, Oct. 3, 2002. Born in Darlington County, he was a son of the late Woodrow and Bertha Mae Tiller Gainey. He was a member of Clyde Church of God, and served in the S.C. National Guard for 25 Years. He was employed with Sonoco for 36 years and was a member of the Sonoco Old Timers Club.

Surviving are his wife, Wanda Messer Gainey of Hartsville; son, Michael Gainey of Hartsville; daughters and sons–in–law, Dawn and Chris Gregory of Hartsville, Kisha Prince of Hartsville, Taryl and Kevin Bundrick of Newberry; sisters, Judy Fales of Hartsville, Mildred Rogers of Hartsville; brother, Larry Gainey of Hartsville; four grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his mother Bertha Mae Gainey, and his father Woodrow Gainey.

WILMA McPHEE

Wilma Faye Hilton McPhee, 66, widow of James L. McPhee, died Monday, Oct. 7, 2002. Born in Joplin, Mo., she was a daughter of Chloe Hall Hilton and the late Amos Hilton. Surviving are her sons, Allan Burns of Washington state, Michael McPhee of Lugoff, Eryll McPhee of Hartsville; mother, of Ukiah, Calif; sisters, Bessie Barnes of Ukiah, Calif., Leatha Riley of Oregon state; brother, Nelson Hilton of Ukiah, Calif.; and nine grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her brother, Vern Hilton.

Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home is in charge.

JAN THOMAS

FLORENCE — Funeral services for Jan Hall Thomas, 62, will be held at 4 p.m. today, Friday, Oct. 11, 2002, at Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Bobby “Sonny” Steen will officiate with burial in Hebron United Methodist Church Cemetery in McBee.

Mrs. Thomas died Tuesday, Oct. 8, 2002. Born in Chesterfield County, she was a daughter of the late Morgan Lee and Mintie Howell Hall. She was employed with Guardian Angels.

Surviving are her sons, Walter Keith Demby of Florence, Rodney “Kip” Thomas of Mexico, N.Y., Daniel A. Stone of Mechanicsville; sisters, Louise Boan, Pearline Dixon and Mary Ellen Padgett, all of Hartsville; brothers, Lewis A. Hall of Hartsville, Benny L. Hall of Florence, William M. Hall of Cobden, Ill., Leroy Hall of Effingham; special friends, Robert Brittingham and Betty Flowers, both of Florence; and five grandchildren. She was predeceased by a son, Scott Thomas.
