Thomas Tirado-Medina,Jr.

1946-2009

Thomas Tirado-Medina, Jr., 62, husband of Kimberly A. Floyd, died Wednesday, January 14, 2009 at the Clarendon Memorial Hospital.

Born in Puerto Rico, he was a son of the late Thomas Tirado-Diaz, Sr. and Amanda Median Tirado.

Mr. Tirado-Medina was of the Catholic faith. He was a U. S. Air Force Vietnam veteran and a retired self-employed contractor.

Surviving are his wife of Summerton; a daughter, Lisa Turner of Turbeville; a son, Timothy Floyd, Jr. of Warwick, NY; a sister, Anna (Fed) Martinez Ruiz of Naples, FL; one grandson, Don (Sheena)Turner of Pinewood; and one great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Vivian Tirado.

Memorial services will be held at 11 A.M. Saturday in the Chapel of the Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home.

Burial will be private.

The family will receive friends at the Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home following the service.

Katherine Wilson Gray

1940-2009

Katherine Wilson Gray, 68, wife of Robert Faulkner Gray, II died Friday, January 16, 2009 at the Palmetto Health Richland Hospital.

Mrs. Gray was born in Sumter, August 23, 1940, the daughter of the late Thomas III and Suzanne Winstead Wilson. She was the valedictorian of her Edmunds High School class of 1957 and a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of the University of North Carolina – Chapel Hill, where she also was a member of Kappa Tau Alpha journalism honorary society.

Mrs. Gray worked for the Sumter Daily Item, the Charlotte Observer, radio station WWOK and Belk of Charlotte. She was assistant director of public relations at Winthrop College in Rock Hill before joining the State-Record Co. in 1966. She then worked in various capacities at The Columbia Record and The State, including reporter, executive women’s editor of both newspapers, editor of The Columbia Record editorial page and associate editor of The State.

Mrs. Gray received state and national awards for reporting, public service, editorial writing, and columns. She was a recipient of the S.C. Press Association’s E.A. Ramsaur Award for best editorial in a daily newspaper, the Animal Protection League of Columbia’s Media Person of the Year and Media Woman of the Year from the S.C. Media Women. She also received awards from Blue Cross-Blue Shield for medical writing and from Tribute to Women in Industry from the YWCA of the Midlands.

She was volunteer of the year at the S.C. State Hospital and served on the board of the Greater Columbia Fighting Back Task Force against Alcohol and Drug Abuse and the Columbia Commission on Children and Youth. She was a member of the S.C. Press Association, the Columbia Media Club, the S.C. Media Women, the National Federation of Press Women, the National Conference of Editorial Writers and the Summit Club. She was listed in Who’s Who in America and Who’s Who of American Women.

Mrs. Gray was a fiscal conservative; but this did not deter her staunch support of equal rights for all. She editorially championed the individual rights of women and minorities. She worked actively to preserve the Capital City’s historic landmarks, to improve inner-city neighborhoods, to equitably fund public schools and to provide equality of employment opportunities. She was passionate in her commitment to furthering the betterment of her community, her state and her country.

She is survived by her husband of Columbia; one son, John Daniel King of Columbia; one sister, Sandra Wilson Donaldson and her husband, Jim of Columbia.

She was predeceased by her daughter, Suzanne Elizabeth King of Columbia, and her brother, Thomas Wyche Wilson of Sumter.

Funeral Services will be held privately at the Sumter Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 4 to 7 PM Wednesday at the home, 124 Sims Ave. in Columbia.

Memorials may be made to the Animal Protection League of Columbia, the American Cancer Society, or a charity of one’s choice.

Elise A. Haile

1907-2009

Anne Elise Aveson Haile, age 101, died peacefully on January 18, 2009, at Covenant Place in Sumter.

Born on September 14, 1907 in Charleston, South Carolina, Mrs. Haile was the daughter of Robert Beardsall and Thusnelda Wagener Aveson. She was preceded in death by her devoted husband of sixty-one years, Ben Haile, her parents, and her brother, R. Cornish Aveson of Roanoke, Va.

A truly lovely lady, her lifelong priorities were her Christian faith and family. An Episcopalian from birth, Mrs. Haile became a Presbyterian upon her marriage. She was active in the First Presbyterian Church of Sumter where she served in various capacities including President of the Women of the Church. In 1977, she and Mr. Haile became founding and faithful members of Westminster Presbyterian Church.

After attending Winthrop College in Rock Hill, South Carolina, Mrs. Haile was active in the financial services industry in Charleston until her marriage in 1939. From that point forward, her primary focus was serving as a loving and devoted wife and mother.

Survivors include her daughter, Elise “Lisa” Haile Svetlik and husband, Michael J. of Sumter; two sons, Robert W. Haile, D.M.D. and wife, Sandra T. of Charleston and William B. Haile and wife, Virginia F. of Savannah, Georgia.

She is also survived by nine grandchildren, Elise S. McElveen and husband, B. Tripp of Sumter; Rebecca H. Housley and husband, Trevor D. of Charleston; Michael Haile Svetlik of Sumter; Robert W. Haile, Jr. and wife, Kristin B. of Charleston; W. Fitzhugh Haile of Savannah; Robert T. Haile of New York, New York; Anne C. Svetlik of Mount Pleasant; Sarah O. Haile and Lauren E. Haile both of Charleston.

Her five cherished great-grandchildren are J. Haile McElveen and Caroline Elise McElveen of Sumter and Christopher B. Housley, Matilda R. Housley and Kennerly C. Housley of Charleston.

Additional family includes numerous nieces and nephews whose love she greatly valued.

The family would like to offer special thanks to the staff of Covenant Place and to Mrs. Haile’s loving and faithful caregivers: Reverend Ruth M. Oliver, Mary Allen, Eyvonne Smiling, Mary Frierson, Avery Williams, Deborah Brown, Ceicily Smith and Jan Emery.

Funeral Services will be held at 3:00 PM Wednesday, January 21, 2009 at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Sumter with the Reverend Walton R. Kendall and Reverend Stuart M. Mizelle officiating.

Burial will follow in the Sumter Cemetery.

Serving as Active Pallbearers will be Mrs. Haile’s grandsons listed above.

Honorary Pallbearers will be Michael A. Graham, Paul L. Graham, Edwin Wilson, III., and the Elders and Deacons of Westminster Presbyterian Church.

The family will receive friends at the home of Mr. and Mrs. B. Tripp McElveen at 23 Ellen Drive in Sumter from 6:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M.Tuesday, January 20, 2009.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested a memorial contribution to Westminster Presbyterian Church, 230 Alice Drive, Sumter, SC 29150, or to The Covenant Place Chapel Fund, 2825 Carter Road, Sumter, SC 29150.

Ernest Peter Ratti

1917-2009

Ernest Peter Ratti, 91, also known as “Ernie” died Saturday, January 17, 2009 at a local nursing home facility.

Born October 13, 1917 in Eatontown, New Jersey, he was the son of the late Anthony L. Ratti and Mary Zazzali Ratti.

He faithfully served his country during World War II as a staff sergeant in the United States Army. Later, he worked as a riding partner in the long distance truck business. He was an avid reader of the local news. Ernie enjoyed sports of any kind. Chinese food and pizza were his foods of choice.

While working in the trucking business, “Ernie” met a family that would become his own. Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Floyd “Bud” Davis, Jr. opened their home to “Ernie” and “Ernie” opened his heart to them. For twenty-seven years, “Ernie” shared their lives. Ozzie Davis, Tammy Campbell (Mark) and Nicole Griffin (Trey) shared and cherished holidays, birthdays, and special moments of their lives with “Ernie.” He fondly referred to Mrs. Betty as “The Misses” and spent countless hours with his best friend, Oscar, on long distance trips. He is truly loved and will be missed.

A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 A.M. Wednesday at Lewis Chapel United Methodist Church with the Reverend Jerry Watson and Reverend John Bauknight officiating.

The family will receive friends at the church following the service and other times at the home of Oscar and Betty Jean Davis, 1845 Plowden Mill Road, Sumter.

Memorials may be made to Lewis Chapel United Methodist Church, 1510 Plowden Mill Road, Sumter, SC 29153.

Donny R. Carson

1968-2009

Donny R. Carson, 40, passed away Saturday, January 17, 2009 after a severe brain injury.

Mr. Carson was an employee of Whitakers, Inc. as well as a commercial diver. He was an Eagle Scout and had served a two year church mission to California. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.

Donny is survived by his daughter, Makena Carson of Mountain Home, ID; his parents, Pat Carson of Sumter and Russell Carson of Kamas, UT; two sisters, Lisa Carson Ferron of Sumter and Michelle Carson Brown of Clermont, FL. He was the uncle to six nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 2 P.M. Wednesday at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints with Bishop Lath Harris officiating.

Burial will be in the Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 P.M. Tuesday at the Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home and other times at the home, 2944 Highway 15 South.

Memorials may be made to the Humanitarian Fund of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, 1770 Highway 15 South, Sumter, SC 29150.
