Mildred Lowder Wilsey Jones

Mildred Lowder Wilsey Jones, 85, widow of Hazel Jones, died Sunday, February 8, 2009 at the Tuomey Regional Medical Center.
Born in Sumter, she was a daughter of the late George Lowder and Ector Hill Lowder.
Mrs. Jones was a retired Shaw Air Force Base Civil Service Base Exchange employee.
Surviving are a son, Reginald Wilsey of Sumter; a daughter-in-law, Ann Wright; a daughter-in-law, Gloria Wilsey; six grandchildren; Troy Wilsey (Teresa), Karen Wilsey Moody (Allen), Angela Christmas, Regina Wilsey, Chad Wilsey, and Chase Wilsey; nine great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a son, Lawson Graydon Wilsey and a granddaughter, Mary “Doodle” Wilsey.
Graveside services will be held at 2 P.M. Wednesday in the Sumter Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 P.M. Tuesday at the Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home and other times at the home, 5 Kenilworth Avenue.

Dr. James (Jim) Edward Kay
1941-2009
Dr. James (Jim) Edward Kay, 67, husband of Frances (Fran) Tinsley Kay, died Sunday February 8, 2009 at his home.
Born in Belton, SC., he was the son of the late Julian Hoyt Kay and Lottie Nelson Kay.
Dr. Kay was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, the S.C. Medical Association, and The Fortnightly Club. He was an avid historian and especially enjoyed researching genealogy pertaining to his family.
He was a graduate of The Citadel and a graduate of the Medical University of S.C. He was a former anesthesiologist at Tuomey Healthcare System for over 35 years and was currently a physician with the S.C. Department of Corrections. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran.
Surviving are his wife of Sumter; one son, Steve Kay of Sumter; one daughter, Louise Kay of Sumter; two sisters, Becky Moorhead of Anderson and Mary Ann Leach and husband Dan of Saluda, N.C.
Funeral Services will be held at 10 AM Wednesday at the First Presbyterian Church with Dr. Mark Durrett officiating.
Burial will follow in the Belton Cemetery in Belton, S.C. at 3:30 PM.
Honorary Pallbearers will be members of The Fortnightly Club.
The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 PM Tuesday at the Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home.

Warren Ivey
1949-2009
Warren Ivey, 59, husband of Dianne Seal Ivey, died Sunday, February 8, 2009 at Providence Hospital in Columbia.
Born in Jackson Co., Fla. he was a son of Herdice Ivey and the late Melba Parrish Ivey.
Mr. Ivey was a member of the First Church of God and was a retired Msgt. from the U.S. Air Force after 20 years of service and was a Vietnam veteran.
Surviving are his wife of Sumter; his father of Cottondale, Fla.; two sons, Tim Smith and wife Bree of Cleveland, TN. and Scott Smith of Charlotte, N.C.; one daughter, Heather Ivey of Fla.
Memorial Services will be held at 4 PM Wednesday at the First Church of God with the Rev. Ron Bower and Rev. Billy Roe officiating.
The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 PM Tuesday at the Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home and also following the memorial services at the church.

Betty Jean Cooper Peek
1929-2009
Betty Jean Cooper Peek, beloved and devoted wife for 51 years of the Rev. Dr. Joe Peek, died, Tuesday, February 10, 2009 at Tuomey Healthcare System.
The daughter of the late John Calhoun and Bertha Brown Cooper, was born and raised in Sumter. She graduated from Edmonds High School in Sumter. She also graduated with honors from Carson Newman College, Jefferson City, Tennessee receiving recognition as the graduate with the highest grade point average in her major field of religion. She also received a “PHT” (Put Husband Through) degree from The Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary in Wake Forest, NC.
She was a previous employee at New Idea Furniture Company, Sumter, SC and The First Baptist Church of Jefferson City, Tennessee. She also served as a substitute teacher in Chattanooga, Tennessee and North Charleston, SC and a Medical Recorder in Lancaster, SC.
She was active and involved in church life all of her life. Most recently she has been a faithful member of Grace Baptist Church in Sumter. She taught Sunday School for over fifty years. She was also known as “Mrs. Bible Drill” due to leadership in Bible drill programs. She was a member of the South Carolina Baptist W.M.U. Executive Committee, the South Carolina Baptist Prayer Committee, and a Church Planting Group.
She was predeceased by her brothers J.C. Cooper and Ransom Cooper, her sisters Helen Cooper Thomas, Josephine Cooper Smith, Ruth “Tootsie” Stack, Vivian Rae Simpson, and Pauline Cooper Harmon, brother-in-laws, Foster Smith, Marion Thomas, W. W. Stack, Charlie Harmon, and the Rev. James Henry Simpson, and sister-in-laws Irene Cooper and Evelyn Cooper.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by her children, John Frank Peek and his wife, Gale, of Summerville, SC., David Alvin Peek and his wife, Jill, of St. Augustine, FL, Paula Peek Griffin and husband, Ashton “T.” of Mt. Olive, NC and Michael Cooper Peek and wife Jill of Rock Hill, SC. She is also survived by two brothers, the Rev. Dr. Robert Cooper of Laurens, and Archie Cooper of Sumter and two sister-in-laws, Agnes Cooper and Melba Cooper. She is also survived by six grandchildren, three step-grandchildren, and three step great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
A celebration of the life and legacy of Betty Jean Peek will be held at 2 PM Saturday at Grace Baptist Church, Sumter, conducted by Dr. Jim Chandler, Rev. Robert Peek and Rev. Doyne Graham officiating with burial followed at the Sumter Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 PM Friday at the Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home

Mary Nunnery
1912-2009
Mary Agnes Allen Nunnery, 96, widow of Charles Nunnery, died Thursday, February 12, 2009 at a local nursing center.
Born in Sumter County, she was a daughter of the late Edward Lee Allen and Martha Lee Allen.
Mrs. Nunnery was a member of New Hope Baptist Church.
Surviving are three daughters, Mattie Lee Gaylord and Mary Ellen Dukes and husband Curry both of Sumter and Margaret Esther Koozer and husband Bill of Blairsville, PA; four sons, Charles Edward Nunnery and wife Billie Rae of Bishopville, James Emanuel Nunnery and wife Susan and David Sylvester Nunnery both of Sumter, and Larry Allen Nunnery and wife Patricia of Lancaster; 16 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and 4 great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two grandsons, John Gaylord and Willis Gaylord; a great-granddaughter, McKenzie Thompson; and a son-in-law, Jesse Gaylord.
Funeral services will be held at 3 P.M. Saturday at New Hope Baptist Church with the Rev. Pressley Morris officiating.
Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Pallbearers will be grandsons.

Violet Brunson Barwick
1914-2009
Violet Bruce Brunson Barwick, 94, widow of Carlos McCoy Barwick, died Tuesday, February 17, 2009 at a local nursing center.
Born in Greenville, she was a daughter of the late Robert Bass Brunson and Florence Jones Brunson.
Mrs. Barwick was a member of New Salem Baptist Church and was retired from Pioneer, Ltd. She loved flowers and birds and found beauty in all nature. She worked in her garden until she was in her 90’s.
Surviving are three sons, Carlos Bruce Barwick (Brenda), Robert Eugene Barwick (Jane) all of Sumter, and Victor Carroll Barwick (Brenda) of Lexington; two sisters, Mary Delk of Sumter and Mildred Moore of Columbia; grandchildren, Mike Barwick (Gina) of Sumter, Rhett Barwick (Tonya) of Powdersville, SC; five great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by one grandson, Chris Barwick; four brothers and three sisters.
Graveside services will be held at 2 P.M. Friday at Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery with the Rev. Robert Rivers officiating.
Nephews will serve as Pallbearers.
The family will receive friends at the graveside following the service and other times at the home of Bruce and Brenda Barwick.
