Nathan J. Berry

NEW BRITAIN, Conn. — Nathan J. “Nick” Berry, 76, husband of Eleanor Futterleib Berry, passed away Nov. 4, 2000, at New Britain General Hospital.
Born in Saluda, S.C., he was a son of the late George P. and Janie Smith Berry. Graduating from Newberry High School, Newberry, S.C., and Hillyer College (now the University of Hartford), he was an Army paratrooper in Europe during World War II. He operated Nathan Berry Accounting Services, worked with the New Britain Probate Court and was active with New Britain YMCA and Boys and Girls clubs. He was a member of St. Matthews Lutheran Church, New Britain, serving as church treasurer for 27 years.
Survivors include his wife; and three sisters, Lila Mae Werts and Gaynelle MacFarlane, both of Newberry and Otha Schumpert Smith of Prosperity.
Services were Tuesday at St. Matthews Lutheran Church. Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Friday in Newberry Memorial Gardens, conducted by the Rev. Sam Marcengill.
Visitation is from 9:30-10:30 Friday at McSwain-Evans Funeral Home, Newberry.
McSwain-Evans Funeral Home, Newberry, S.C., is in charge of local arrangements.

Mamie H. Bowie

BRADLEY — Services for Mamie Hackett Bowie, of 407 Muckaway Road, will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Mount Zion AME Church, with the Rev. James Speed Sr. officiating and Elder George T. Devlin Jr. presiding. Assisting ministers are the Revs. Waymon Coleman Sr., Carnell Morton, Benjamin Hackett, Willie Neal Norman, Norris Turner, Grace Smith and Derrick Scott. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The body will be placed in the church at 10.
Pallbearers and flower bearers are nephews and nieces.
Honorary escorts are Piedmont Conference Missionaries.
Visitation is from 7-8 tonight at Parks Funeral Home.
The family is at the home at the home in Promised Land Community.
Parks Funeral Home is in charge.

John P. Crocker

CALHOUN FALLS — Memorial services for John P. “J.P.” Crocker will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Northside Baptist Church in Calhoun Falls. The Rev. Jerry Dalton and the Rev. DeWitt Waters will preside.
Mr. Crocker, 74, husband of Mary Cooper Crocker, passed away Oct. 18, 2000, at Providence Hospital in Columbia. Burial was in Maple Grove Cemetery in Vermilion, Ohio.
Born in Calhoun Falls, he was a son of Jiles L. and Lillian Crocker. He lived in Elyria, Ohio, for 44 years before moving to Barney, Ga., where he was a member of Morrison Baptist Church. Living in Calhoun Falls for the past five years, he was co-owner and operator, along with his wife, of the Stop-n-Go Country Store in Mount Carmel. He was a World War II Army veteran and a supervisor and timekeeper for Timms Springs Co., Elyria.
Survivors include his wife; three daughters, Wanda Lisbon of Bay Village, Ohio and Juanita Hall and Darlene Cardinal, both of Vermilion; a son, John Michael Crocker of Elyria; a brother, Earl Crocker of Nevada; three sisters, Carolyn Sue Gentry and Doris Barth, both of Las Vegas and Ada Hilley of Calhoun Falls; eight grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
Memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Association, 937 High St., Worthington, Ohio, 43085 or Shriners Burn Hospital for Children, 3229 Burnet Ave., Cincinnati, Ohio 45229.
Riddle Funeral Home, Vermilion, was in charge.

John C. Cunningham

GREENWOOD — John C. Cunningham, of Wesley Commons, formerly of Waterloo, passed away Nov. 9, 2000, at Self Memorial Hospital.
Born in Laurens County, he was a son of the late Willie and Martha Foggie Cunningham. He was a member of Laurens Hill Baptist Church.
Survivors include two brothers, Frank Cunningham and Clyde Cunningham, both of Waterloo; two sisters, Marie C. Taylor of Waterloo and Jonell C. Poole of Winston-Salem, N.C.
The family is at the home of a sister, Marie Taylor, and of a brother, Clyde Cunningham, both on Cunningham Circle, Waterloo.
Services will be announced by Percival-Tompkins Funeral Home, which is in charge.

Frances Erwin

GREENWOOD — Frances Cheek Erwin, 85, of 305 Roberts Drive, widow of Charlie S. Erwin, passed away Nov. 8, 2000, at her home.
Born in Anderson County, she was a daughter of the late William J. and Sadie Prince Cheek. She was a homemaker and a member of Beulah Baptist Church.
Survivors include three daughters, Sandra Giles of Greenwood, Barbara McWhorter of Due West and Eleanor Ryan of Clarks Hill; two sisters, Janie Vanadore and Vera Nicholson, both of Abbeville; 11 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 Friday at Harris Funeral Home, Abbeville, conducted by the Rev. Tony Beauford and the Rev. Tommy Cartledge. Burial will be in Ebenezer United Methodist Church Cemetery.
Visitation is from 7-8:30 tonight at the funeral home.
The family is at the home of a daughter, Mr. and Mrs. John Giles, 305 Roberts Drive, Greenwood.
Memorials may be made to HospiceCare of the Piedmont, 408 W. Alexander Ave., Greenwood, S.C. 29646.

Hugh Morris Gambrell

CLEMSON — Hugh Morris Gambrell, 74, husband of Sara Willis Gambrell, passed away Nov. 8, 2000, at Emory Hospital in Atlanta.
Born in Owings, he was a son of the late Samuel Chester and Mary Belle Hood Gambrell. He was a graduate of Clemson University, a member of the Tiger Brotherhood and a World War II veteran. He retied in 1995 as co-owner of Clemson Printers and was a former member of Clemson City Council and Volunteer Fire Department. He was a member of Clemson United Methodist Church for 50 years, where he was an usher.
Survivors include his wife of the home; two daughters, Mrs. Bill (Carol) Hoffmann of Greenville and Mrs. Bub (Janet) Dillon of Seneca; two brothers, W. Hood Gambrell of Canada and Samuel Gambrell of Tuscaloosa, Ala.; a sister, Zelda Oates of Due West; and four grandchildren.
Burial will be at 1:30 Friday in Old Stone Church Cemetery, with memorial services at 2 at Clemson United Methodist Church.
Visitation is from 6-7:30 tonight at Duckett-Robinson Funeral Home, Central.

Olive H. Gilliam

BELTON — Olive Holliday Gilliam, 93, of 1010 Cooley Bridge Road, widow of Louis Martin Gilliam, passed away Nov. 8, 2000, at Magnolia Manor in Greenville.
Born in Belton, she was a daughter of the late Andy and Sallie Chapman Holliday. She was a homemaker and a member of Cedar Shoals Baptist Church.

Alma C. Boatwright

BELTON — Alma Crouch Boatwright, 87, of 112 Myrtle Ave., widow of Charles Bunyan Boatwright Sr., passed away Oct. 8, 2000, at Anderson Area Medical Center.
Born in Saluda, she was a daughter of the late John Avery and Hope DeLoach Crouch. She retired from B.C. Moore’s and was a member of First Baptist Church of Belton, where she was a member of the Women’s Missionary Union and the Philathea/Fidelis Sunday School Class. She was also a member of the Eastern Star.
Survivors include two sons, C.B. Boatwright Jr. of Columbia and John W. “Bill” Boatwright of Belton; a sister, Helen Polatty of Saluda; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be at 2 today in the Garden of Memories, conducted by the Rev. Dale Lynch and Dr. Booker Bagby.
Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church, P.O. Box 366, Belton, S.C. 29627.

Fleming Butler

GREENWOOD — Fleming Butler, 75, of 552 Hackett St., widower of Mary Ellen Carroll Butler, passed away Oct. 9, 2000, at Self Memorial Hospital.
Born in Greenwood County, he was a son of the late Gary Butler and Rebecca Morgan. He was a member of Beulah Baptist Church and retired from Greenwood Sanitation Department.
Survivors include four daughters, Brenda Curenton, Patricia Crenshaw and Mary Ellen Duncan, all of Greenwood and Bobbie Jean Donalds of Due West; a sister, Rosa Lee Palmore of Greenwood; 21 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren.
The family is at the home.
Services will be announced by Percival-Tompkins Funeral Home, which is in charge.

Lottie H. McBride

BRADLEY — Lottie H. McBride, 72, of 419 Muckaway Road, widow of Ruthart McBride, passed away Oct. 9, 2000, at South Fulton Medical Center in College Park, Ga.
Born in Greenwood County, she was a daughter of the late Joel Bailey and Lula Frazier Hackett. She was a member of Mount Zion AME Church and the Missionary Society.
Survivors include a son, George Rufus McBride of the home; three daughters, Betty McBride and Belva McBride, both of College Park and Debra McBride of the home; three brothers, Edward Hackett of Bradley, Benjamin Hackett of Philadelphia and David Conner of Gastonia, N.C.; four sisters, Mamie H. Bowie and Gracie Coward, both of Bradley, Mary Alice Hurst of Philadelphia and Guquta Booker of San Francisco; four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
The family is at the home.
Services will be announced by Percival-Tompkins Funeral Home, Greenwood, which is in charge.

Josephine Musgrave

GREENWOOD — Josephine N. Musgrave, 82, of 311 Tedards Store Road, passed away Oct. 9, 2000, at her home.
Born in Findley, Ohio, she was a daughter of the late William and Fonia Dailey Thompson. She was twice married, first to Merle Opperman and last to the late Lawrence Musgrave. She retired from Specialty Foods in Findlay.
Survivors include three grandsons and a great-grandson.
Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Memory Gardens, Clemson.
The family is at the home of a grandson, Craig and Christi Opperman, 311 Tedards Store Road, Greenwood.

Danny Joel Staton

LIMA, Ohio — Danny Joel Staton, 66, husband of Phyllis S. Bowsher, passed away Oct. 8, 2000, at SRMC in Lima.
Born in Greenwood, S.C., he was a son of the late Rev. Linton D. and Lucy Mann Staton. He was a self-employed small engine repairman, a former manager with Winn-Dixie and a member of Glad Tidings Assembly of God Church, Greer, S.C.
Survivors include his wife; a son, Michael Staton of Greenville, S.C.; a daughter, Beverly Staton of Greenville; two brothers, Bob Staton and Jim Staton, both of Greer; and two grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 today at Siferd Westwood Chapel, with burial in Greenlawn Cemetery, Elida, Ohio.
Visitation is from 12-2 today at the chapel.
Memorials may be made to a charity of one’s choice.
Siferd Westwood Chapel is in charge.
