Virgil Taylor

CAPE CORAL, Fla. — Virgil Taylor, 75, widower of Sylvia Taylor, passed away Oct. 17, 2000, at Hospice House.
Born in Greenwood, S.C., he was a Navy World War II veteran, serving on the Battleship USS Wisconsin. He retired from Chrysler in 1981 after 30 years of service and moved from Hazel Park, Mich. to Cape Coral in 1988.
Survivors include two sons, Duane Taylor of Sterling Heights, Mich., and Brian Taylor of Cape Coral; a daughter, Barbara Engelhardt of Clawson, Mich.; a stepsister, Margaret Price of Greenwood; eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Services will be at noon today at Metz Funeral Chapel.
Metz Chapel of Harvey Engelhardt Metz Funeral Homes is in charge.

Annette Norris Thompson

GREENWOOD — Annette Norris Thompson, 71, of 105 Cemetery Road, husband of Fred Thompson, passed away Oct. 19 at her home.
Born in Saluda, she was the daughter of the late Burrell and Hattie Chappell Norris. She was a member of Young Mt. Zion Baptist Church and was a retired lab technician.
Survivors include her husband of the home; two sons, Eugene Goudy Jr. of Olanda, Fla., and Harold Goudy, of Fredericksburg, Va.; one daughter, Jeaneatte Goudy of Edgefield; one brother, John W. Norris of Manhatten; three sisters Ethel Oliphant of Saluda, Julia Coleman of Brooklyn, N.Y. and Naomi Norris of Greenwood and several grandchildren.
The family is at the home.
Funeral arrangements will be announced by Butler and Sons Funeral Home of Saluda.

Mildred Ann Calhoun Timpson

GREENWOOD — Mildred Ann Calhoun Timpson, 51, of 806 Gage St., Greenwood, passed away at Self Memorial Hospital on Friday, Oct. 20, 2000.
Services are incomplete and will be announced by Robinson and Son Mortuary Inc.

Robert Lee Wardlaw Jr.

FAIRFAX — Robert Lee Wardlaw Jr., 71, formerly of Greenwood, passed away Oct. 20, 2000, at Columbia Care Center in Columbia.
Born in Abbeville, he was the son of the late Robert and Gladys Fair Wardlaw Davis. He was of the Baptist faith.
Surviving are four daughters, Odessa Davis and Barbara Shuler, both of High Point, N.C., Stephanie Golden of Winston Salem, N.C. and Robin Slappy of Abbeville; a sister, Anita Woods of Abbeville; 12 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren.
The family is at the home of his daughter, Robin Slappy of Calhoun Apartments in Abbeville.
Services are incomplete and will be announced by Brown and Walker Funeral Home.

Hugh Acker Sr.

EASLEY — Charles Hugh Acker Sr., 88, of 607 South B St., widower of Eva Lucille Abercrombie Acker, passed away Oct. 28, 2000 at Palmetto Baptist Medical Center.
Born in Pickens County, he was a son of the late John G. and Nola Woodson Acker. He was a master plumber and retired as a mechanical superintendent and estimator with Daniel Construction Co., Greenville. He was a member of Easley First United Methodist Church and Bates Masonic Lodge.
Survivors include two sons, Charles Hugh Acker Jr. of Waterloo and John W. Acker of Evans, Ga.; a brother, Sid Acker of Easley; a sister, Louise Watson of Easley; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Graveside services were Sunday in Woodlawn Memorial Park, Section A, conducted by the Rev. Ben Barnett.
Memorials may be made to Easley First United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 582, Easley, S.C. 29641.
The family is at the home.
Robinson Funeral Home was in charge.

Andy Andrew

GREENWOOD — Louis Edgar “Andy” Andrew, 91, of 109 Lovely Lane, husband of Edna Johnson Hoover Andrew, passed away Oct. 28, 2000, at Wesley Commons.
Born in Lincoln, Neb., he was a son of the late William Russell and Lulu Moeller Andrew. He graduated from Friend High School, Friend, Neb., in 1927 and Colorado State College, Fort Collins, in 1939. He received a master’s of science degree in soil conservation from the University of Nebraska in 1947 and retired as a forestry soil scientist from U.S. Department of Agriculture Soil Conservation. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church and the Retired Foresters of South Carolina. He was twice married, first to the late Mary Jack Andrew.
Survivors include his wife of the home; a stepdaughter, Hilda H. Deines of Fort Collins, Colo.; a stepson, Kendall Hoover of Rochester, Minn.; and two step-granddaughters.
Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at First Presbyterian Church, conducted by Dr. John Livingston. Graveside services will be in Andrew Cemetery, Friend, Neb., at a later date.
Visitation is in the church lobby after the memorial services.
The family is at the home in Wesley Park.

Estelle Burnette

JOHNSTON — Estelle Bryant Burnette, 96, of Route 2, Box 221, passed away Oct. 29, 2000, at Edgefield Health Care Center.
Born in Edgefield County, she was a daughter of the late Monroe and Lula Carpenter Bryant. She was a homemaker and a member of Ebenezer Baptist Church, Trenton.
Survivors include two daughters, Lena B. Militano of Canton, Ohio and Betty Jean B. Taylor of Johnston; a son, Jesse Edward Burnette of Aiken; seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday in Ebenezer Baptist Church Cemetery, Trenton.
Visitation is from 6:30-8:30 tonight at Bland Funeral Home.
Memorials may be made to Johnston First Baptist Church.

Frank Kolar Jr.

GREENWOOD — Frank Kolar Jr., 85, of 104 Rock Creek Drive, widower of Lillian Barnes Kolar, passed away Oct. 29, 2000, at the home of his son.
Born in Cicero, Ill., he was a son of the late Frank Kolar Sr., and Anna Hossman Kolar. In 1980, he retired from Modine Manufacturing after 43 years of service.
Survivors include a son, Frank Kolar III of Greenwood; a daughter, Shelia Kolar of La Port, Ind.; two brothers, George Kolar and John Kolar, both of La Port; three grandchildren.
No services are planned.
The family is at the home of his son and daughter-in-law, Frank and Zoe Kolar, 104 Rock Creek Drive.
Memorials may be made to The Piano Fund, St. Mark United Methodist Church, 550 Bypass 72 N.W., Greenwood, S.C. 29649.

Tom Lagroon

GREENWOOD — Tom “Tom” Lagroon, 88, of 110 Gulf St., widower of Cora L. Roman Lagroon, passed away Oct. 29, 2000, at Self Memorial Hospital.
Born in Greenwood County, he was a son of the late Hurbert and Sarah Ann Payne Lagroon. He retired from Greenwood Mills, Mathews Plant, and was a member of Beulah Baptist Church, where he was a former deacon and member of the senior choir and Hundred Men in Black. He was also a member of the Brotherhood and Sons of Aide No. 55.
Survivors include a son, Arby Lagroon of Greenwood; a brother, Joell Roundtree of Edgefield; seven sisters, Katie Mae Benson and Eula Oglesby, both of Baltimore, Mary Klugh of Abbeville, Ruby Speaks, Emma Lou Watts and Ola Stephens, all of Greenwood and Mahulda Moore of Philadelphia; seven grandchildren; 14 great-great-grandchildren; and a niece reared in the home, Hattie Tidwell of Greenwood.
The family is at the home.
Services will be announced by Robinson and Son Mortuary Inc., which is in charge.

Cora Mitchell

ABBEVILLE — Cora Maeline “Mae” Mitchell, 70, of 1029 Highway 72 West, wife of Henry Mitchell, passed away Oct. 29, 2000, at her home.
Born in Anderson, she was a daughter of the late Dave and Clara Hall Graham. She was a retired textile employee with Rocky River Mills and a member of Friendship Baptist Church.
Survivors include her husband of the home; a son, Tony Major of Abbeville; five daughters, Diane M. Todd and Judy M. Powell, both of Tignall, Ga., Sheryl Fleming of Donalds, Ann Pressley of Abbeville and Bonnie Sue Mitchell of the home; a brother, Thomas Graham of Calhoun Falls; 15 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Forest Lawn Memory Gardens, conducted by the Rev. Jimmy Alewine and the Rev. Sammy Dixon.
Visitation is from 7-9 Tuesday at Harris Funeral Home.
The family is at the home of Ann Pressley, 125 Moore St.

Charlie Mobley

ABBEVILLE — Charlie John Mobley, 62, of 769 Watts Road, husband of Amolene Richey Mobley, passed away Oct. 29, 2000, at Self Memorial Hospital in Greenwood.
Born in Abbeville County, he was a son of the late Joe Carroll and Ethel Lee Hutchinson Mobley. He was a retired textile employee with J.P. Stevens Plant and was of the Presbyterian faith.
Survivors include his wife of the home; a son, Charlie John Mobley Jr. of the home; three sisters, Lillie Stamey of Abbeville, Louise Black of Iva and Mary Hill of Donalds; a brother, Robert L. Mobley of Abbeville; and a niece reared in the home, Carolyn Richey.
Services will be at 3 Tuesday at Harris Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. Otto McDonald. Burial will be in Warrenton Presbyterian Church Cemetery.
Visitation is from 7-9 tonight at the funeral home.
The family is at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Johnny Banks, 751 Watts Road, Abbeville.
