Bertha ‘Bertie’ Bowie

HONEA PATH — Bertha Elizabeth “Bertie” Shaw Bowie, 68, of 4 Townhouse Apartments, widow of James Gary Bowie, passed away Aug. 31, 2000, at Anderson Area Medical Center.
Born in Honea Path, she was a daughter of the late Lewis and Beulah LeCroy Shaw. She was a homemaker and was of the Holiness faith.
Survivors include three sons, Felix Bowie of Donalds, Lewis Bowie of Honea Path and David Bowie of Anderson; two daughters, Vanessa Bowie of Donalds and Pamela Bowie of Honea Path; three grandchildren reared in the home, Shawn Jordan of Williamston and Christi Jordan Brock and Chad Bowie, both of Honea Path; eight other grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 Saturday at Winona Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Billy Slatten and Pastor Kiki Tant. Burial will be in the Garden of Memories. The body will be placed in the church at 1.
Visitation is from 7-9 tonight at Pruitt Funeral Home.
The family is at the home of a daughter, Vanessa Bowie, 802 Willie Kay Road, Donalds.
Pruitt Funeral Home is in charge.

Beatrice Smith Bryant

ABBEVILLE — Services for Beatrice L. Smith Bryant, of Route 3, Highway 823, will be at 3 Sunday at St. Paul AME Church, conducted by the Rev. James Rouse. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The body will be placed in the church at 2.
Pallbearers are Pat Jackson, James “Jim” Cobb, Jerry Bryant, Michael Cobb, Fred Thomas and Cory Bryant.
Flower bearers are Elizabeth Jones, Shanita Moore, Tonita Power, Mamie Gray, Jannett Jones, Chicquetta Anderson, Brenda Jackson and Sheryl Gray.
The family is at the home.

‘Rex’ Butner III

EASLEY — Visitation for Jessie Lee “Rex” Butner III, formerly of Easley, will be from 11:30-1 at Easley First Baptist Church in the Family Life Center.
He passed away Aug. 24, 2000, in Paris, France, and memorial services were held in Paris Tuesday.
Memorials may be made to American Heart Association, Mid-Atlantic Affiliate, Memorials and Tributes Processing Center, P.O. Box 5216, Glen Allen, Va., 23058-5216.

Sallie C. Harmon

SIMPSONVILLE — Sallie Calhoun Harmon, 81, passed away Aug. 29, 2000, at Summit Place Nursing Center.
She was a member of Long Branch Baptist Church and worked for the Poinsett Club.
Survivors include two daughters, Gussie Cheatham of Greenville and Ruby Coleman of Mauldin; two sisters, Essie Wideman of Greenville and Mary Wideman of Abbeville; a brother, Squire Calhoun of New York City; 12 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 Saturday at Long Branch Baptist Church, with burial in Greenville Memorial Gardens.
Visitation is from 7-7:30 tonight at S.C. Franks Chapel of Remembrance.

Christopher L. Harvley

GREENWOOD — Christopher Lee Harvley, 13, of 674 Grier St., passed away Aug. 31, 2000.
Born in Greenwood, he was a son of Tony R. Harvley and Donna Cannon Harvley. He was an eighth-grade student at Southside Middle School and formerly attended the Emerald Center.
Survivors include his mother of the home; his father of Greenwood; maternal grandparents, Gene and Alta Cannon of Ninety Six; paternal grandfather, Ralph Harvley of Ninety Six; paternal grandmother, Barbara Walkup of Abbeville; and two sisters, Kelsey Harvley and Kacey Harvley, both of the home.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Harley Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. Randy Ouzts. Burial will be in Greenwood Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers are John J. Cannon, Danny Harvley, Scotty Rushton, Darrell Harvley, Bobby Harvley and Ronnie Harvley.
Honorary escorts are students of the special education class of Southside Middle School, Amy Abrams, Marie Roundtree, Jerri Richey and Karen Harley.
Visitation is from 7-9 tonight at the funeral home.
The family is at the home of an aunt, Susan Cannon, 7102 Highway 25 South.

Elizabeth Butler Johnson

NINETY SIX — Services for Elizabeth Butler Johnson, formerly of 101 Little Mountain Road, will be at 2 Sunday at Bethlehem Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. J.W. Price, assisted by the Rev. Terry Bryant. Burial will be in Old Mount Zion Baptist Church Cemetery, Epworth.
Pallbearers are nephews.
Flower bearers are members of the church usher board and nieces.
Visitation is from 7-8 Saturday at Hampton House Apartments, in the recreational room on the second floor.

James H. Steen

WHITMIRE — James H. “Buddy” Steen, 77, of 48 Cooper Road, husband of Eletha Johnson Steen, passed away Aug. 31, 2000, at Providence Hospital in Columbia.
Born in Union, he was a son of the late Gideon and Marie Ward Steen. He was a member of First Baptist Church and retired from J.P. Stevens Co. He was a World War II Navy veteran and served in the National Guard for 20 years.
Survivors include his wife; two sons, Steve Steen and Ricky L. Steen, both of Whitmire; two sisters, Dorothy Baker of Ninety Six and Ruth Teseniar of Sumter; three grandchildren and a great-grandchild.
Services will be at 2 Saturday at First Baptist Church, with burial in Whitmire Cemetery.
Visitation is from 7-9 tonight at Gray Funeral Home.

Essie K. Stewart

HODGES — Essie Kathalee Stewart, 76, of 6819 Highway 178 North, passed away Aug. 31, 2000, at her home.
Born in Abbeville, she was a daughter of the late William Earl and Bessie Lee Ellis Stewart. She retired from Greenwood Mills, Mathews Plant.
Survivors include a daughter, Margaret Stewart of Hodges; a son, Ellis R. Stewart of Greenwood; a brother, Robert W. Stewart of Augusta, Ga.; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 1:30 Saturday at Harley Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. Tommy Cartledge. Burial will be in Greenwood Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers are Gene Salters, Billy Mitchell, David Crawford, Stan Medlock, Neil Beggs and Dalton Boyce.
Visitation is from 7-9 tonight at the funeral home.

Thomas Turner

NEWBERRY — Thomas Turner, 79, of 11 Glenn St., husband of Dorothy Milstead Turner, passed away Aug. 30, 2000.
Born in Saluda, he was a son of the late Allen Turner. He retired from Kendall Co., Oakland Plant, and was a member of The Church of God.
Survivors include his wife; a stepson, David McCollum of Wake Forest, N.C.; three step-grandchildren and three step-great-grandchildren.
Services were at 11 a.m. today at McSwain-Evans Funeral Home, with burial in Newberry Memorial Gardens.
Memorials may be made to Freedom Baptist Church, P.O. Box 1106, Newberry, S.C. 29108 or the American Heart Association.

Lois Stone, 102, area church leader dies

DONALDS — Lois Dodson Stone, 102, formerly a homemaker and virtual pillar of the Donalds Baptist Church, passed away Sept. 25, 2000, at Abbeville Nursing Home.
She was a former member of Donalds Civic League, and at the Donalds Baptist Church, she was a longtime Sunday school teacher, Sunbeam leader, pianist and a member of the Women’s Missionary Union.
Born in Laurens County, she was a daughter of James F. and Dora Martin Dodson. She was the widow of Clifton Burriss Stone.
Survivors include a daughter, Evelyn Stone Boling of Donalds; a sister, Eula D. Bagwell of Due West; three grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and a great-great-grandchild.
Graveside services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Donalds Baptist Church Cemetery by the Rev. Jerry Hill.
Visitation is from 6-8 tonight at Pruitt Funeral Home in Honea Path.
Family members are at their respective homes.
Memorials may be made to Donalds Baptist Church, P.O. Box 91, Donalds, S.C. 29638.
