Joan Virginia Turbeville

1957-2009

Joan Virginia Turbeville,51, wife of Wyndham Meredith Manning, died peacefully in her sleep at home, Tuesday, February 17, 2009.

Born September 16, 1957, at Johnson Air Base, Japan she was a daughter of Maud Stroud Turbeville and the late Lt. Col. (Retired USAF) Michael C. “Pete” Turbeville, Jr.

She is survived by her husband Meredith Manning of Sumter; her mother of Sumter; two sisters, Gayle Fohner (Joseph L. Jr.) of Oriental, NC and Judith T. Abernathy of Sumter; a brother, Michael C. Turbeville, III and fiancé Dianna Geddings of Pinewood; her mother-in-law, Sara Louise Manning of Sumter; numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.

Joan traveled extensively with her family before they settled in Sumter in 1966. She graduated from Sumter High School and attended Clemson University and Sumter Area Technical College. She was a Master Gardener and had worked as a horseback riding instructor.

Graveside services will be held at 3 P.M. Saturday in the Sumter Cemetery with the Rev. Hamilton Smith officiating.

The family will receive friends following the service at the Manning home, 211 N. Purdy Street and the Turbeville Home, 2311 Toxaway Drive.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 128 Stonemark Lane, Columbia, SC 29210 or to York Place Episcopal Home for Children, 234 Kings Mountain St, York, SC 29745-1131.

Amy Sue Burleson

1959-2009

Amy Sue Burleson, 50, died Sunday, February 22, 2009 at her home.

Born in Mary Ester, Florida, she was a daughter of Robert Jack Burleson and the late Peggy Jean Dooley Burleson.

Ms. Burleson was a member of Westside Baptist Church.

Surviving are her father of Sumter; one sister Diane Lynn Compston and husband Fred of Ohio; two brothers, Robert A. Burleson of Sumter and James D. Burleson and wife Carol of Aiken, SC and her beloved dog “Whopper”.

Memorial services will be held at 4 P.M. Friday in the Chapel of the Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home with the Rev. James D. Burleson officiating.

The family will receive friends following the service at the home of Robert Jack Burleson, 2132 Kingsbury Road.

Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association, 520 Gervais Street, Suite #300, Columbia, SC 29201.

James L. Reed

1925-2009

James L. Reed, 84, husband of Dorothy Rixford Reed, died Sunday, February 22, 2009 at the Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born in Toledo, Ohio, he was a son of Fred and Frances Reed.

Mr. Reed was the retired manager of U. S. Broach Company.

Surviving are his wife of Sumter; a son, James Close and wife Suzanne of Roswell, GA; two grandchildren, Jennifer Robertson of Gastonia, NC and Jamie Gaines of Chattanooga, TN and their mother, Sally Morrow of Atlanta, GA; and three great-grandchildren.

No services are planned at this time.

Virginia Reardon Bernshouse

1919-2009

Virginia Reardon Bernshouse, 89, widow of Wilbert H. Bernshouse, died Monday, February 23, 2009 at the Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born May 22, 1919 in Sumter, she was a daughter of the late David Irby Reardon and Lessie Strange Reardon.

Mrs. Bernshouse was a graduate of Edmunds High School. She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church where she was a past member of the Board of Stewards, a past Circle Leader, a member and past President of the Trinity Fellowship Class, and a life member of the UMW. She also served as a Cub Scout Leader of Den 3 and Brownie Scout Leader of Troop 16. She served tirelessly with her husband for many years with the Boy Scout Troops # 338 and # 336.

She previously served as a secretary to former Coroner Scott Cain. She retired from the Palmetto Pigeon Plant in 1981 as a record keeper. Mrs. Bernshouse was a loving wife, mother and grandmother.

Surviving are one daughter, Wilbur Bernshouse Shumaker and husband Jeff of Sumter; one son, William David Bernshouse and wife Rose Ann of Victoria, MS; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, D.C. Reardon and William “Bill” Irby Reardon.

Funeral services will be held at 3 P.M. Tuesday, March 3, 2009 at Trinity United Methodist Church with Rev. Stephen Taylor officiating.

Burial will be private in Sumter Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be David Shumaker, Jim Strong, Bill Reardon, Bob Reardon, Herb Womble, and L. W. Jennings.

Honorary Pallbearers will be members of the Trinity United Methodist Church Fellowship Class.

The family will receive friends following the service in the Church Parlor and other times at the home of her daughter, 229 Lesesne Drive.

Donald Julius Martin

1927-2009

Donald J. Martin, 81, widower of Eva M. Martin, died Saturday, February 21, 2009 at the Palmetto Health Richland Hospital in Columbia.

Born in George, Iowa, he was a son of the late Julius Emmett Martin and Mary Margaret Donahue Martin.

Mr. Martin was a retired U. S. Air Force veteran and was also a retired Civil Service employee at Shaw Air Force Base.

Surviving are two daughters, Sarah Martin of Amsterdam, Netherlands and Alyson Martin of Columbia; cousins, Catherine Veenker Kutka, Ralph Veenker, Jr., Martin Veenker, Rita Veenker Stockman, Mary Jo Veenker Haarsma, Linda Veenker, Judy Veenker, and Dorothy Veenker Staas; and a special cat, “George”.

Memorial Services will be held at 11 A.M. Saturday in the Chapel of the Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home.

The family will receive friends immediately following the service at the home of Ted and Barbara Gose, 16 Warren Street.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Friends of the Library, % of the Sumter County Library, 111 N. Harvin Street, Sumter, SC 29150, or to the SPCA, 1140 S. Guignard Drive, Sumter, SC 29150.

Helen Virginia Wallerich George

1919-2009

Helen Virginia Wallerich George, 89, widow of Charles O. George, died Monday, March 2, 2009 at the Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born in Sigourney, Iowa, she was a daughter of the late George C. Wallerich and Ida Spiess Wallerich.

Mrs. George was an active member of First Presbyterian Church where she was a member of the McLaurin Berean Sunday school class and the Helen Murray Prayer Group. She was also a member of Circle 5, served as past Circle Chairman and was currently Personal Faith & Life Chairman for the circle. She was very active in Wednesday Luncheons and a former member of the Communion Committee.

Mrs. George was a former member of the United States Navy Nurse Corps and served during World War II. She served as a Registered Nurse in the Labor and Delivery Department at Tuomey Hospital with 34 years of service. She was a charter member of the Evening Pilot Club, a member of the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 15 and the Shepherd’s Center.

Surviving are two sons, Thomas R. George (Chicki) of Watkinsville, GA and C. Douglas George (Terisue) of Mission Viejo, California; two daughters, Pamela K. George of Sumter and Virginia Davenport (John) of Irvine, CA; two brothers, Howard Wallerich of Washington , IA, and David Wallerich of Sigourney, IA; one sister, Elizabeth Aldinger of Sigourney, IA; six grandchildren, Jed Danner, Mason Davenport, Maggie (Kevin) Ward, Lisa (Mich) Killingsworth, Dylan George, and Tyler George; four great-grandchildren, Rhodes Danner, Cricket Danner, Sam Ward, and Haley Ward.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, Leo Wallerich and Dale Wallerich; one sister, Gladys Haugen.

Funeral services will be held at 11 A.M. Saturday at First Presbyterian Church with Rev. Dr. Mark Durret officiating.

Burial will be in the Sumter Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Jed Danner, Mason Davenport, Dylan George, Tyler George, Kevin Ward, and Mich Killingsworth.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 P.M. Friday at the Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home and other times at the home.

Memorials may be made to First Presbyterian Church, 9 W. Calhoun Street, Sumter, SC 29150.
