J.D. Geddings
GREENWOOD — Jessie Delbert “J.D.” Geddings, 83, passed away July 30, 2001, at Magnolia Manor.
Born in Sumter, he was a son of the late Jessie Jacobs and Lula Pritchard Geddings. He retired from Greenwood Packing Plant after 35 years service.
A member of Emerald Baptist Church, he was also a member of the R.E. (Pop) Strom Sunday School Class and was the discipleship director of the church for more than 10 years.
He was a member of the Greenwood Lions Club.
Survivors include two daughters, Daisy G. Scurry of Darlington and Cynthia G. Elmore of Bishopville; a sister, Emma Lee Nesbit of Sumter; a brother, Bernard Geddings of Sumter; six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Services will be conducted at 2 Thursday at Blyth Funeral Home by Tunny Blackmon and the Rev. Wayne Wiggins.
Burial is in Oakbrook Memorial Park.
Pallbearers are Jimmy Scurry, Billy Geddings, Jimmy Owensby, Terry Boone, Grady Landreth and Albert Cullins.
Visitation is from 1-2 Thursday at Blyth Funeral Home.
The families are at their respective homes.
Memorials may be made to Emerald Baptist Church Building Fund, 1510 Evans Pond Road, Greenwood, S.C. 29649.
Blyth Funeral Home is in charge.

Patricia Griffin
GREENWOOD — Patricia Rylee Griffin, 57, wife of Fred Griffin, of 229 Jenkins Spring Road, passed away Aug. 1, 2001, at her home.
Services will be announced by Harley Funeral Home, which is in charge.

Valerie ‘Val’ Hackett
GREENWOOD — Services for Valerie “Val” Hackett, of 3-B Holman St., will be conducted at 2 Thursday at Mount Moriah Baptist Church by the Rev. Raymond Adams, assisted by the Revs. Paul Lang, Claude Tolbert, Annette Edwards, Lohona Mosley and Norris Turner. The body will be placed in the church at 1. Burial is in the church cemetery.
Pallbearers are Donald White, Leonard White, Donell Singletary, Cedric Singletary, Anthony White and Sherman Keith White.
Flower bearers are friends of the family.
Honorary escorts are members of 1978 and 1979 Greenwood High School Girls Track Team.
Hackett was a member of the ’78 and ’79 GHS Girls Track Team and the Women’s Aide Society No. 87.
The family is at the home of a sister, Deborah Williams, 102 Sycamore Drive, McKellar Farms Community.
Parks Funeral Home is in charge.

John Lewis Hall
GREENVILLE — John Lewis Hall, 67, of 7 Vesta Drive, passed away July 31, 2001.
Born in Greenville County, he was a son of the late Luther Brownlo Hall and Mattie Liner Hall. He was an Army veteran and retired textile worker, and was of the Pentecostal faith.
Survivors include two sisters, Bonnie Marie Scott of Greenville and Opal Hall Miller of Greenwood.
Services will be at 2 Thursday at Thomas McAfee Funeral Home, Northwest, with burial in Coleman Memorial Cemetery.
Visitation is from 6-8 tonight at the funeral home.

Cynthia Hannah
WARE SHOALS — Cynthia Rebecca Hannah, 90, formerly of 5 Lee St., passed away July 31, 2001, at Wesley Commons, Greenwood.
Born in Abbeville County, she was a daughter of the late George Allen and Cynthia Ella Mundy Hannah. She was a seamstress and a member of Ware Shoals First Presbyterian Church.
Survivors include two sisters, Earline Jameson of Charleston and Mary Inez Boiter of Hickory Tavern.
Services will be conducted at 3 Thursday at Parker-White Funeral Home by the Rev. Wayne Wicker. Burial is in Greenville Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Donalds.
Pallbearers are Allen Boiter, Charles Floyd, David Hannah, Bill Jameson, Ford Verdery, Larry Tipper and Tyler Hannah.
Visitation is from 2-3 Thursday at the funeral home.
Family members are at their respective homes.
Memorials may be made to Ware Shoals Presbyterian Church.

Emma Lou Hubbard
GREENWOOD — Emma Lou Johnson Hubbard, 70, of 103 Bellcourt, passed away July 31, 2001, at Lexington Medical Center.
Services will be announced by Blyth Funeral Home, which is in charge.

John Hornsby Burton
NORTH AUGUSTA —John Hornsby Burton, 80, of 1131 Carolina Ave., passed away Aug. 9, 2001.
Graveside services, with military honors, will be conducted at 2 Monday in Westover Memorial Park by the Rev. Randall Monk.
The family will receive friends from 7-9 Sunday at Stephen D. Posey Funeral Home, or other times at the home.

William Higgins
HODGES — William David Higgins, 89, of 602 Morgan Road, widower of Catherine Coleman Higgins, passed away Aug. 10, 2001 at his home.
Services will be announced by Blyth Funeral Home, which is in charge.

Truman Benson Campbell
Former Greenwood police chief dies at 83
From staff reports GREENWOOD — A former police chief here passed away Thursday at Self Memorial Hospital. Truman Benson Campbell, 83, of 1511 Kateway, was the widower of Faye Phillips Campbell.
Born in Pelzer, he was a son of the late William Thomas and Maggie Moody Campbell. He retired from the Greenwood Police Department after 30 years of service, 15 as police chief. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, receiving a bronze star and numerous other medals. He also was a member of Trinity Baptist Tabernacle.
Greenwood Deputy Coroner Steve Owings said Campbell was the ideal policeman.
“Couldn’t ask for a fairer or more honest person,” Owings said. “He’s going to be missed tremendously.”
Owings said Campbell gave him his start in law enforcement with a job in the police department. Survivors include three sons, Larry Campbell of Greenwood, Phillip Campbell of Stafford, Va., and Barry Campbell of Clute, Texas ; a daughter, Beryl Campbell of Greenwood; two brothers, William Campbell of Tampa, Fla., and Grover Campbell of Greenwood; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Services will be Monday at 11 at Harley Funeral Home Chapel, conducted by the Revs. Randy Outz and E.A. Cooper. Burial will be in Greenwood Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers are Phillip Campbell, Roger Crenshaw, Larry Campbell, Barry Campbell, Josh Campbell, Brian Campbell and Roger Campbell.
Visitation is Sunday from 7-9 p.m. at Harley Funeral Home.
The family is at the home.
Memorials may be made to Trinity Baptist Tabernacle, P.O. Box 2081, Greenwood, S.C. 29646.

Virginia Hazel
GREENWOOD — Anna Virginia Rodgers Hazel, 86, wife of William R. Hazel, of 219 Duncan Ave., passed away Aug. 17, 2001.
Born in Woodruff, she was a daughter of the late Will and Vivian Lanford Rodgers. She retired from the Copper Kettle and was a member of Emerald Baptist Church.
Survivors include her husband; a great-nephew and niece with whom she lived, James and Alyson Bodie; three sisters, Margaret Teague of Woodruff, Dorothy Greene of Greenville and Frances Hilley of Greenwood; and great-great-nephews and niece of the home, Chassity, Dalton and Braxton Bodie.
Services are Sunday at 2 at Harley Funeral Home, conducted by the Revs. Mike Hatfield and Tom Cartledge. Burial is in Greenwood Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers are Albert “Pammy” Freeman, David Watkins, Randy Tiller, Billy Worthington, Tunney Blackman and Ernie Sumner.
Visitation is tonight from 7-9 at the funeral home.
The family is at the home.

Raymond West
SIMPSONVILLE — Raymond Edward West, 75, of 205 S. Pliney Circle, passed away Aug. 17, 2001, at Oakmont Nursing Center in Greenville.
He was a son of the late Marcus Frank and Effie Wood West. He worked with Pet Dairy and Cryovac and served in the U.S. Air Force from 1950-59. He also was a lifelong member of Simpsonville First Baptist Church.
Survivors include a brother, J. Bernice West of Greenwood; two sisters, Dorothy W. Armstrong of Simpsonville and Goldie S. Davis of Greenwood and numerous nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews.
Funeral services are Sunday at 3 at Simpsonville First Baptist Church, conducted by Dr. Randy Harling. Burial is in the Simpsonville City Cemetery.
Visitation is from 2-3 at the church prior to the service.
Memorials may be made to West’s Sunday School Class at Simpsonville First Baptist Church, 106 Church St., Simpsonville, S.C. 29681
