Ray Almquist
GREENWOOD — Alfred Reynald “Ray” Almquist, 92, of 113 Stratford Road, widower of Eulah Coykendoll Almquist, passed away Feb. 21, 2001, at Self Memorial Hospital.
Born in Pawnee Rock, Kan., he was a son of the late Peter Pearson and Anna Johnson Almquist. He was a World War II Army veteran and was a retired wheat farmer. Formerly of Larned, Kan., he was a member of First Christian Church in Larned and had made his home in Greenwood since March, 2000.
Survivors include a daughter, Sherrill A. Inabinet, with whom he made his home; a son, Donald Ray Almquist of Larned; four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be Saturday in Larned.
Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church, 722 Grace St., Greenwood, S.C. 29649 or Hospice Care of the Piedmont, 408 W. Alexander Ave., Greenwood, S.C. 29646.

Verda Goff Beck
NEWBERRY — Verda Goff Beck, 89, formerly of 2016 Piedmont St., widow of Willie D. Beck, passed away Feb. 21, 2001, at White Oak Manor.
Born in Saluda County, she was a daughter of the late Joe G. and Bonna Miller Goff. She retired from Kendall Co., Mollohon Plant. She was a member of Glenn Street Baptist Church, the Ladies 65 Plus Sunday School Class, the Women’s Missionary Union and the Life Blest Group. She was also served as a Sunday school teacher for many years.
Survivors include two sons, Bobby Beck and Wayne Beck, both of Newberry; seven grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 Saturday at Glenn Street Baptist Church, conducted by the Revs. Todd Kirkland, Donald West and Theron Thomlinson. Burial will be in Newberry Memorial Gardens.
Visitation is from 7-8:30 Friday at Whitaker Funeral Home.
The family is at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Bobby Beck, 15 Glenn St.
Memorials may be made to Glenn Street Baptist Church, 208 Glenn St., Newberry, S.C. 29108.

David R. Bodie Sr.
CLOVER — David Rufus Bodie Sr., 84, of 413 Knox St., widower of Katie Edmunds Bodie, passed away Feb. 20, 2001, at Presbyterian Hospital Harris Hospice Unit, Charlotte.
Born in Ward, he was a son of the late Lovic David and Nettie Jones Bodie. He graduated from Newberry College and the Graduate School of Business Navy Supply Corps School of Harvard University. A Navy veteran of World War II and the Korean War, he served as vice president and senior officer in charge of First National Bank of South Carolina, Clover, for 18 years and on the Board of Advisors after retirement. He was a former president of the Clover Chamber of Commerce, president of the Clover Lions Club, District Committee member of the Palmetto Area Boy Scouts of America and chairman of the United Fund and the State Board of Advisors of the Small Business Administration. He helped to organize the York County Chapter of the American Cancer Society, serving as treasurer for two years. He served eight years as a member of the York County Commission for Technical Education and was chair of the Budget and Finance Committee of York Technical College. He was a member of First United Methodist Church, serving as a church lay leader, chairman of the Administrative Board and teacher of the Men’s Bible Class.
Survivors include two sons, David R. Bodie Jr. of Waxhaw, N.C., and James W. Bodie of Clover; two brothers, Kester J. Bodie of Ridge Spring and James W. Bodie of Tryon, N.C.; two sisters, Inez B. Carson and Ruby B. Corley, both of Edgefield; two grandchildren and two great-granddaughters.
Services will be conducted by the Rev. Paul Hutchison at 2 Friday at First United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Woodside Cemetery.
Visitation is from 6:30-8 tonight at M.L. Ford and Sons Funeral Home.

Jessie Fennell
WARE SHOALS — Jessie Fennell, 90, formerly of Ninety Six, widow of John William Fennell, passed away Feb. 21, 2001, at Self Memorial Hospital in Greenwood.
Born in Avera, Ga., she was a daughter of the late Luther and Mamie Lou Humphreys Williams. She was a retired employee of Greenwood Mills and a member of Ware Shoals United Methodist Church.
Survivors include two daughters, Opal Morris of Tifton, Ga., and Gail Holley of Ware Shoals; 12 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
Services will be conducted by the Rev. Gayle Summey at 2 Friday at Ware Shoals United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery, Ninety Six.
Visitation is from 6-8 tonight at Parker-White Funeral Home.
The family is at the home of Gail and Tommy Holley, 3 Pineview St., Ware Shoals.

Roscoe Fleming
WARE SHOALS — Thomas Roscoe Fleming, 96, of 3271 Mount Bethel Road, widower of Polly Wood Fleming, passed away Feb. 17, 2001, at Laurens County Hospital.
Born in Elberton, Ga., he was a son of the late James Farris and Susan Bond Fleming. He was a member of Poplar Springs Baptist Church and Brewerton Masonic Lodge and a retired employee of Riegel Textile Corp.
Survivors include a daughter, Mary Anne Cook of North Myrtle Beach; and two grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 Sunday at Poplar Springs Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Todd Horton and the Rev. Marion Lineberger. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The body will be placed in the church at 1.
Pallbearers are Willie Wood, Charles Wood, Larry Batson, Keith Batson, David Batson, Don Batson and John Simpson.
Honorary escorts are members of the Senior Adult Men’s Sunday School Class of the church.
Visitation is at the home Saturday and Sunday.
Memorials may be made to Poplar Springs Baptist Church.

Bertha G. Hill
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Bertha G. Hill, 87, formerly of Greenwood, S.C., passed away Feb. 21, 2001, in Jacksonville.
She moved from Orlando to Jacksonville in the late 1980s and was a member of Murray Hill Baptist Church and the Garden Club of Jacksonville.
Survivors include a son, Bobby J. Hill of Jacksonville; three brothers, Leroy of Jacksonville, Selma of Washington , D.C., and Melvin Johnson of Wilmington, N.C.; three sisters, Mabel Cade of Jacksonville, Betty Baker of West Palm Beach and Gloria Overton of Wilmington; five grandchildren and a great-granddaughter.
Services will be at 2 Friday at Hardage-Giddens Funeral Home, Edgewood Chapel.
Burial will be at 11 a.m. Monday in Greenville Memorial Gardens, Greenville, S.C. Viewing is from 6-8 tonight at the funeral home.

HODGES — Jerry Hughes, 52, of 6214 Highway 25 North, passed away Feb. 20, 2001, at his home.
Born in Anderson County, he was a son of the late Cecil and Izona Reed Hughes. He was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include two sons, Douglas Jerry Hughes of Greenwood and Jeremy Dale Hughes of Honea Path; two daughters, Kimberly Gail Dixon of Belton and Tonya Moss of Honea Path; three brothers, William C. Hughes of Ninety Six, Clifford Hughes of Abbeville and Randall Dale Hughes of Hodges; and five grandchildren.
Services will be conducted by the Rev. Robert Emory at 11 a.m. Friday at Parker-White Funeral Home, Ware Shoals. Burial will be in Mount Bethel Baptist Church Cemetery.
Pallbearers are Chris Hughes, Matthew Hughes, William Hill, Jessie Henderson, Gerald Dickson and Michael Lindsey.

John H. Terry Jr.
BRADLEY — John Henry “Bug” Terry Jr., 61, 301 Boulware Drive, Promised Land Community, husband of Zarelda Smith Terry, passed away Feb. 18, 2001.
Born in Greenwood, he was a son of the late John Henry Terry Sr. and Sarah Ellen Collins Terry. He was a brick mason, working for Freddie Edwards Masonry, and a member of Second Damascus Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife of the home; two sons, Maris Wills Terry of Tallahassee, Fla., and John Henry Terry III of Toronto, Canada; three daughters, Andrea Marchelle Anderson of Oxen Hill, Md., and Cynthia Terry and Sonya Terry, both of the home; two brothers, Collins Terry of Greenwood and Benjamin Terry of Promised Land; four sisters, Margaret Cannon of Greenwood, Ida Robinson of Landover, Md., Lillie Bell Andrews and Sarah Gaston, both of Promised Land; and six grandchildren, two of the home, Dameon Terry and Reginald Haskin.
Services will be conducted by the Rev. Leroy Robertson at 1 Saturday at Second Damascus Baptist Church. The body will be placed in the church at noon. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Pallbearers are Freddie Edwards, Press Jacobs, Cornelius Williams, Teddy Cook, Kenneth Moss and Tommie L. Macon.
Flower bearers are nieces.
Honorary escorts are members of Brewer Class of 1958, nephews and co-workers from Freddie Edwards Masonry.
