Virginia Rodgers Helms

1935-2009

Virginia Rodgers Helms, 74, wife of Billy Edward Helms, Sr., died Monday, March 2, 2009 at her home.

Born in Sumter, she was a daughter of the late Jim Rodgers and Callie Pritchard Rodgers.

Mrs. Helms was a member of Providence Baptist Church.

Surviving are her husband of Sumter; one son, Billy “Bubba” Edward Helms, Jr. and wife, Karin of Sumter; two daughters, Patty Truett and husband Michael, and Joye Barrs and husband Michael all of Sumter; five grandchildren, Michael Edward Barrs of Marion, SC, Chance Player, Billy Helms, III, Christopher Helms and Judy Lynn Truett all of Sumter; two great-granddaughters, Brianna Nicole Helms and Aubrey Lynn Rogers of Sumter; two sisters, Mary Lou Griffith and husband Ira, Bessie Hodge and husband Robert of Sumter; three brothers, Buddy Rodgers and wife Doris, Bobby Rodgers and wife Doris, and Willis Rodgers all of Sumter; numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 4 P.M. Thursday at Providence Baptist Church with Rev. Dr. Harold Greene and Rev. Mitch Towery officiating.

Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Billy Helms, III, Christopher Helms, Michael Barrs, Frankie Rodgers, Robbie Rodgers, and Monty Griffith.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 P.M. Wednesday at the Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home and other times at the home.

Memorials may be made to Tuomey Hospice, 115 N. Sumter Street, Suite 410, Sumter, SC 29150.

John Malcolm Brabham, III

1993-2009

John Malcolm Brabham III, 16, died Thursday, July 23, 2009 from injuries sustained in an automobile accident.

Born April 29, 1993 in Sumter, he was a son of John Malcolm Brabham, Jr. and Susan Spencer Brabham.

John was a member of First Presbyterian Church where he was an active member of the Youth Group and served as a volunteer for Vacation Bible School. He was a rising junior at Wilson Hall School and was an integral part of the school’s basketball and tennis teams. He was named Best-All-Around player on the 2008-2009 Junior Varsity Basketball team, which he helped lead to the conference championship. He was an active member of the Key Club, the Junior Beta Club, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, the Spanish Club, the Ping Pong Club, the Literary Magazine staff, and was a Baron Reader.

John was a loving son, grandson, brother, and a friend to all he knew. He lived life to the fullest and enjoyed good times with family and friends. He had many dreams and aspirations for his life and was on his way to obtaining them.

Surviving are his parents of Sumter; one brother, Spencer Thomas Brabham of the home; his maternal grandmother, Mary Ann (Mac) Curtis Spencer of Sumter, and his paternal grandmother, Louise LeNoir Brabham of Dalzell; aunts and uncles, Dr. Rhett and Virginia Spencer of Florence, Curtis and Adelaide Spencer of Sumter, and Hunter and Mary Brabham Sheridan of Dalzell; five first cousins, Meg and Rhett Spencer III, Sallie and Ellie Spencer, and John Hunter Sheridan.

He was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, Thomas Rhett Spencer and his paternal grandfather, John Malcolm Brabham, Sr.

Funeral services will be held at 2 P.M. Sunday at First Presbyterian Church with Rev. Dr. Mark Durrett and Rev. Josie Holler officiating.

Burial will follow in the Episcopal Church of the Ascension Cemetery in Hagood.

Pallbearers will be Jack Barnes, Will Duffy, Patrick Gordon, Zack Hubbard, Claude Lathan, Zach Martin, Candler Mathews, Gregory McLeod, Daniel Muldrow, Neyle Noyes, Will O’Rourke,Trent Pannell, Tyler Smith and Jack Waggett.

Honorary Pallbearers will be members of the Wilson Hall Class of 2011.

The family will receive friends from 3 to 5 P.M. Saturday at the home, 2761 Creekside Drive.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Wilson Hall School, 520 Wilson Hall Road, Sumter, SC 29150 or to First Presbyterian Church, 9 W. Calhoun St. Sumter, SC. 29150

Lauren Parrott Booth

1927-2004

Sumter, S. C.

Lauren Parrott Booth, 77, husband of Jean Young Booth, died Saturday, June 26, 2004 after a short illness at Providence Hospital in Columbia.

Born in Sumter on May 20, 1927, he was one of four children of the late John Philip Booth, Jr. and Hassie Parrott Booth.

Mr. Booth attended Sumter public schools and Western Military Academy and graduated from Sumter High School in 1944. After his freshman year at North Carolina State University he served in the U.S. Army during WWII. Upon his honorable discharge from the military, he enrolled at Clemson A&M College, graduating in 1950 with a Bachelor of Science degree in agronomy. A lifelong farmer, he was still actively engaged in farming at his death as a partner in Booth Farms and was a former officer of Booth-Boyle Livestock Company.

Active in civic affairs, he served on the board of several organizations. He was past Chairman of Sumter County Council, past chairman and founding member of the Clemson University Foundatioin Seed Association, past president Sumter Young Mens Christian Association Board of Directors, past honoree as YMCA Humanitarian of the Year, past chairman of the United Way and past Chairman of the Fine Arts Council of Sumter, among others.

A lifelong member of Trinity United Methodist Church, he served in many capacities, including Chairman of the Administrative Board, a songleader for many years in the Boyle Bible Class, where he was a member.

Surviving are his wife of 53 years of Sumter; one son, Richard Lauren Booth and wife Gayle of Sumter; one brother, John Philip Booth, III of Sumter; two sisters, Hassie Booth Nelson and Bettie Ann Booth Klapthor, both of Sumter; one uncle, Herbert Carlisle Booth of Sumter; two grandchildren, Jayne Rowell Booth and Richard Lauren Parrott Booth, III.

Graveside Services will be held at 10 AM Monday in the Sumter Cemetery with Rev. Stephen Taylor officiating.

Nephews will serve as Pallbearers.

Honorary Pallbearers will be E. M. (Mac) DuBose and J.T. (Bud) Rivers, Sr., members of the Boyle Bible Class and members of the Naomi and Warner Coffee Club.

The family will receive friends at the home of his son, 224 Haynsworth St.

Memorials may be made to Trinity United Methodist Church 226 W. Liberty St. Sumter, SC 29150 or to the Sumter Family YMCA, 50 Willow Dr., Sumter, SC 29150.

Thomas Eugene Hodge

1915-2004

Thomas Eugene Hodge, 88, husband of Rosalie Hudson Hodge, died Monday, June 28, 2004 at the Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born in Sumter, he was a son of the late Harry Hodge and the late Belle Poplin Hodge.

Mr. Hodge was a member of Providence Baptist Church, the St. Peter’s Masonic Lodge #54, the Order of the Knights of Pythias, the Sons of Confederate Veterans and the Sons of the American Revolution. He was a retired salesman with Life of Georgia Insurance Company with 17 years of service.

Mr. Hodge was previously married to the late Marie Wells Hodge and subsequently to the late Ora Flowers Hodge and currently to Rosalie Hudson Hodge who survives along with two daughters, Geraldine London and husband Bill of Chapin and Susan Hodge Davis of Seneca;a step-daughter, Ellie Rae Rowland and her husband John of Sumter; a sister, Mary Lee Lowder of Sumter; 13 grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren; and a sister-in-law Lois Pack Hodge of Paxville.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Beverly Hodge Smith; two brothers, Curtis Hodge and Dempsey Hodge.

Funeral services will be held at 4 P.M. Friday at Providence Baptist Church with Rev. Dr. Harold P. Greene, Jr. and Rev. John Hall officiating.

Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Jay Rowland, Lee Davis, David London, James London, Steve Smith, Shawn Smith and Scott Smith.

Martha L. McLaughlin

1914-2004

Martha L. McLaughlin, 100, died Wednesday, June 30, 2004 at a local nursing center.

She was a daughter of the late Wesley J. Snyder and the late Martha Scott Snyder.

Mrs. McLaughlin was a 1924 graduate of Columbia College and a member of the Columbia College Alumni Association. She was employed as a elementary school teacher in Winter Park, Florida. She assisted in reconstruction efforts and war recovery of Japan shortly after World War II. She was a member of First United Methodist Church of Winter Park, Florida.

Surviving are two nieces, Betsy S. Acken and husband John of Sumter; Nancy Gardener and husband Rocky of Altamonte Springs, Fla.; two nephews, Jimmy Snyder and wife Cissy of Sumter and Harry Snyder and wife Carol Ann of Stuart, Florida.

She was preceded in death by three brothers, Dr. W. J. Snyder, Jr., Harry Snyder and Frank Snyder.

Graveside services will be held at 2 P.M. Sunday in the Sumter Cemetery with Rev. Mark Riggs officiating.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 6 P.M. Saturday at the Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home and other times at the home of her niece, Betsy Acken.

Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Disease & Related Disorders Association, P. O. Box 7044, Columbia, S.C. 29202.
