Lawrence Ray Wilkerson

WHITMIRE — Lawrence Ray Wilkerson, 77, of 931 Central Ave., widower of Joyce Finney Wilkerson, passed away July 8, 2000, in Newberry.
Born in Whitmire, he was the son of the late Tom and Rachael B. Wilkerson. He served in the U.S. Army in WWII and was retired from the National Guard. He was also retired from West Point Stevens in Whitmire.
Survivors include two daughters, Gail Folk of Newberry and Tammy McHale of Kingswood, Texas ; two brothers, Kenneth Wilkerson and Walter Wilkerson, both of Whitmire; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be at 2:30 Monday at Whitmire Cemetery.
Visitation is from 7-9 today at Gray Funeral Home.
The family is at the home of his daughter, Gail Folk, 3362 Belfast Road, Newberry.
Gray Funeral Home, Whitmire, is in charge.

James H. Dodgen

GREENWOOD — James Henry Dodgen, 67, of 214 Merriman St., husband of Betty Williams Dodgen, passed away June 14, 2000, at Self Memorial Hospital.
The family is at the home of a daughter, Tracey Jordan, 409 E. Henrietta Ave.
Services will be announced by Harley Funeral Home, which is in charge.

Renee Garrett

GREENWOOD — Renee Smith Garrett, 39, of 203 Morgan Ave., wife of James H. Garrett Jr., passed away June 13, 2000, at Self Memorial Hospital.
Visitation is from 7-8:30 Thursday at Blyth Funeral Home.
The family is at the home and at the home of her parents, Robert and Pear T. Smith, 406 Ligon Road.
Services will be announced by Blyth Funeral Home, which is in charge.

Kate Hazel

SALUDA — Kate Wertz Hazel, 88, of 301 W. Church St., widow of Ben Lee Hazel, passed away June 12, 2000, at her home.
Born in Saluda County, she was a daughter of the late Sydney Johnson and Lula Turner Wertz. She was a homemaker and former proprietor of The Guest House. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, the Saluda Garden Club and St. Paul United Methodist Church, where she was a member of the Ida Crouch Bible Class.
Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Joseph F. (Kay Hazel) Edwards of Kingsport, Tenn.; two grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and her caregiver, Lessie Ann Burno of Saluda.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Paul United Methodist Church, with burial in Travis Park Cemetery.
Visitation is from 6-8 tonight at Ramey Funeral Home.
Memorials may be made to St. Paul United Methodist Church, 102 E. Butler Ave., Saluda, S.C. 29138.
Ramey Funeral Home is in charge.

Ronnie Hozey

CLINTON — George Ronnie Hozey, 58, passed away June 12, 2000, at Laurens County Hospital, Laurens.
Born in Calhoun Falls, he was a son of the late John H. Hozey Sr. and Flora Ada Evans Hozey. He was a maintenance man and a member of First Assembly of God in Clinton.
Survivors include a brother, James C. Hozey of Colbert, Ga., and two sisters, Diane Silvers and Victoria Hill, both of Iva.
Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Forest Lawn Memory Gardens, Abbeville, conducted by the Rev. Donald M. Henson.
Calhoun Falls Funeral Home is in charge.

Reba S. Shumaker

GREENWOOD — Reba Stamm Shumaker, 93, of 1110 Marshall Road, widow of the Rev. Ralph Baxter Shumaker, passed away June 13, 2000, at Self Memorial Hospital.
Services will be announced by Harley Funeral Home, which is in charge.

Josie Mae Watts

NINETY SIX — Services for Josie Mae Booker Watts, of 214 Carter Road, will be at 2 Friday at Mount Olive Baptist Church, conducted by Rev. Tommy Ligon, assisted by the Revs. Andy Robinson, Frank Williams, Derrick Scott and Lawrence Penn. Burial will be in Scurry Springs Baptist Church Cemetery, Chappells.
Pallbearers are Johnny Booker, Paul Booker, Jessie Pope, John Willie Pope, Joe Johnson, Smiley Christian and Steve Scurry.
Honorary escorts are deacons, deaconesses and trustees of Mount Olive Baptist Church.
Flower bearers are first cousins and friends of the family.
Visitation is at the home Thursday evening, beginning at 7.
Robinson and Son Mortuary Inc., Greenwood, is in charge.

Dick Wheless

SEAFORD, Va. — Richard Sidney “Dick” Wheless, 66, husband of Joyce P. Wheless, passed away June 12, 2000.
Born in Bennettsville, S.C., he was a 1960 graduate of North Carolina State University and an Air Force veteran of the Korean conflict. In 1988, he retired from civil service as a deputy base engineer with Langley Air Force Base. His 33 years of service also included appointments at Robins AFB, Ga., Myrtle Beach, S.C., and Pope AFB, N.C. He was a member of Zion United Methodist Church and the Builders Sunday School Class.
Survivors include his wife of the home; three sons, Richard Wheless of Newport News, Ronald Wheless of Grafton, and Michael Wheless of Gloucester; a sister, Jeanne Gailey of Greenwood, S.C.; and four grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 Thursday at Zion United Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. Joseph D. Carson. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Memorials may be made to Zion United Methodist Church, Roof Fund, P.O. Box 240, Seaford, Va. 23696.

Raymond J. Williams

JOHNSTON — Raymond J. “Fuzzy” Williams, 74, of Walker Street, passed away June 9, 2000, at Doctor’s Hospital.
Services will be announced by Edgefield Mercantile Funeral Home, which is in charge.

Kenneth C. Burnett

NINETY SIX — Kenneth Culbertson Burnett, 95, of 203 McKenzie Road, widower of Floies Stepp Burnett, passed away June 15, 2000.
Born in Greenwood, he was a son of the late J.W.J. Burnett and Bessie Culbertson Burnett Sullivan. He retired from Pliath Theater and had worked with the T & P Lines Railroad. He was involved with Meals on Wheels and was a circus model builder. He was a member of Emerald Baptist Church.
Survivors include two daughters, Helen B. Bridges of Greenwood and Gladys Maurine Appelt of Washington , Ga.; a brother, Francis “Grady” Burnett of Decatur, Ga.; a half brother, Del Pleasant Burnett of Greenwood; 10 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Emerald Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Rich Lancaster. Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery. The casket will be placed in the church at 10.
Pallbearers are deacons of the church.
Visitation is from 7-9 Friday at Harley Funeral Home.
The family is at the home of a daughter, Helen Bridges, 203 McKenzie Road.

Johnny DeVore

HONEA PATH — John David “Johnny” DeVore, 86, of 312 Heyward Ave., husband of Rubye Branyon Devore, passed away June 13, 2000, at Anderson Area Medical Center.
Born in Abbeville County, he was a son of the late John Robert and Tencie Ellenburg DeVore. He was a retiree of Southern Railway and a World War II Army veteran. He was a member of Honea Path First Baptist Church, where he was a former deacon and Sunday school teacher and was a member of the adult and senior citizen choirs. He served on the Honea Path City Council and was the judge for Area 2, District 2, Anderson County, for 20 years. He was a member of Centre Lodge 37 AFM for 50 years and a member and past president of Honea Path Lions Club.
Survivors include his wife of the home; three daughters, Johnnie DeVore King and Jean DeVore Bowie, both of Easley and Janice DeVore Gilstrap of Danville, Va.; a sister, Sadie DeVore Bussey of Spartanburg; seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Honea Path First Baptist Church, conducted by Dr. Booker Bagby and the Rev. Robert Beaver. Burial will be in the Garden of Memories. The body will be placed in the church at 10.
Visitation is from 7-9 tonight at Pruitt Funeral Home.
The family is at the home.

GREENWOOD — James Henry Dodgen, 67, of 214 Merriman St., husband of Betty Williams Dodgen, passed away June 14, 2000, at Self Memorial Hospital.
Born in Greenwood, he was a son of the late Junus and Sara Cannon Dodgen. He was an employee of Herbert Anderson Construction Co. and an Army veteran of the Korean conflict. He was a member of First Assembly of God Church.
Survivors include his wife of the home; five daughters, Tracey Jordan, Stacey Robertson and Lisa Pruitt, all of Greenwood, Sarah Kelley of Hodges and Terry Ford of Ninety Six; two sons, Brian Langley of the home and Jimmy Hodges of Greenwood; a sister, Elise Brooks of Greenwood; a brother, Joe Dodgen of Greenwood; nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 Friday at Harley Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. Randy Ouzts and the Rev. Bill Robertson. Burial will be in First Mount Moriah Baptist Church Cemetery.
Pallbearers are Don Newsome, Bobby Hamrick, Clifton Medlock, Brian Cromer, Keith Carruth, Dibble Cooper, Harold Satcher, Donald Cannon and Leon Massey.
Honorary escorts are Gene Cannon, Corey Dodgen, David Dillashaw and David Coleman Jr.
Visitation is from 7-9 tonight at the funeral home.
