GREENWOOD — Rebecca “Ma Beck” Turner Hill, 76, of 301 New Zion Road, Promised Land Community, widow of Willie Hill Jr., passed away April 11, 2001, at Roger C. Peace Rehabilitation Hospital in Greenville.
Born in Abbeville County, she was a daughter of the late Charlie and Cora Turner. She was a member of Glovers Chapel Baptist Church, the Willing Workers, the Missionary Society and the Senior Citizens.
Survivors include three sons, John Henry Hill, Jesse Allen Hill and Raymond Hill, all of Promised Land; five daughters, Carrie Lee Wright, Elease Hill, Linda Faye Johnson and Gertrude Howzell, all of Promised Land and Christine H. Morton of Greenwood; three brothers, William Turner and J.C. Turner, both of Greenwood and Sammie Turner of Promised Land; two sisters, Rosa Parker of Promised Land and Josephine Martin of Greenwood; 23 grandchildren, two reared in the home, Trella Mallissa Hill and Titarion J’Von Hill; and 23 great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 Sunday at Glover’s Chapel Baptist Church, Troy, conducted by the Rev. M.L. Taylor. The body will be placed in the church at 1. Burial will be in Greenwood Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers are Willie Rayford Freeman, Larry Johnson, Bennie Evans, Glenn Norman, L.C. Martin, Willie James Anderson and Gerald Wright.
Flower bearers are ushers of the church, along with Velma Evans, Barbara Wright, Doris Ann Gilbert, Diane Rouse, Melanie Morton and Ella Mae Curenton.
Visitation is 7-9 Saturday at the home in Promised Land.
Robinson and Son Mortuary Inc. is in charge.

Jerry W. Johnson

HONEA PATH — Jerry Wayne Johnson, 32, of 16984 Highway 76 W., passed away April 10, 2001, at Greenville Memorial Hospital.
Born in Clinton, he was a cable lineman with P&P Cable Construction. Survivors include his mother and stepfather, Joyce Lynch Page and Charles Page Jr. of Honea Path; a daughter, Taylor Johnson of Simpsonville; two sisters, Sherry Johnson and Jennifer Page, both of Honea Path; maternal grandmother, Mary Jean Lynch of Cross Hill; and paternal step-grandparents, Charles Page Sr. and Easter Page of Honea Path.
Services will be at 2 Saturday at Kennedy Mortuary, Laurens, with burial in Forest Lawn Cemetery.
Visitation is from 7-9 Friday at the mortuary.
The family is at the home of his parents, 16952 Highway 76 W. Kennedy Mortuary, Laurens, is in charge.

Sallie Harkness Kay, 106

DUE WEST — Sallie S. Harkness Kay, 106, formerly of Due West, passed away April 10, 2001, at the Saluda Nursing Center.
Born in Abbeville County, she was a daughter of the late Rev. Benjamin and Anna French Strother. She was a homemaker and a member of Flat Rock A.M.E. Church.
Survivors include two daughters, Deborah Power of Alexandria, Va., and Qulardeen Pressley of Brooklyn, N.Y.; and two sons, George and Jimmy Harkness, both of Columbia.
Services will be conducted at 2 Saturday at Flat Rock AME Church, Abbeville, with burial in the church cemetery. The body will be placed in the church at 1.
Visitation is from 7-8 Friday at Brown and Walker Funeral Home.
The family is at the home of a daughter-in-law, Ruth Harkness, Harkness Lane, Due West.

Nan Roark Klugh

COLUMBIA — Funeral services for Nan Roark Klugh, 79, of Columbia will be held at 2 o'clock Friday in the Chapel of Greenlawn Funeral Home.
Interment will be in Green-lawn Memorial Park. Visitation will be Thursday evening from 7 to 9 p.m. in Green-lawn Funeral Home, 845 Leesburg Road. Memorials may be made to the Asbury Memorial United Methodist Church.
Mrs. Klugh passed away Tuesday, April 10, 2001. Born in Honea Path, SC, she was a daughter of the late Paul Edward and Mary Ether Phillips Roark. She was a member of Asbury Memorial United Methodist Church.
Surviving are a son, Philip R. Klugh of Columbia; a daughter, Phyllis K. Klugh Kammerer of Cayce; a brother, James A. Roark of Greenwood, SC; sisters, Mary Ella Miskelly of Greenwood, SC and Margie P. Wall of McCormick, SC; 4 grandchildren, Heather and Michael Klugh of Columbia; and Joshua and Sarah Kammerer of Cayce.

HODGES — Alexander Edgar “Alex” Lark Jr., 86, of 108 Luker Road, widower of Nettie Bagwell Lark, passed away April 11, 2001, at Self Memorial Hospital in Greenwood.
Born in Anderson County, he was a son of the late Margaret Jane Bradley and Alexander Edgar Lark Sr. He was a World War II Army veteran, a member of Providence Baptist Church and a retired employee of Riegel Textile Corp.
Survivors include two sons, Richard Calvin Lark of Grand Fork, N.D., and Colon Alexander Lark of Greenwood; three daughters, Nora Price of Hodges, Thelma Shirley of Donalds and Frankie Beeks of Sumter; a sister, Fannie Gurley of Belton; 11 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 4 Friday at Providence Baptist Church, conducted by the Revs. Bennie Ridlehoover and Lamar Babb. Burial will be in Greenwood Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers are grandsons and great-grandsons.
Visitation is from 7-9 tonight at Parker-White Funeral Home, Ware Shoals.
The family is at the home of a daughter, Thelma Shirley, 1043 Martin Road, Donalds.

J.B. Ouzts

GREENWOOD — Charlie “Bug” Welton Jr., 74, of 212 Tompkins St., widower of Josie Calhoun Williams Welton, passed away April 10, 2001, at his home.
Born in Greenwood County, he was a son of the late Charlie Welton Sr. and Hattie Radden Welton. He was a retiree of Greenwood Mills and a World War II Navy veteran. A member of Mount Tabor Baptist Church, he was also a former deacon, a former assistant church treasurer and a former member of the Usher Board and the choir.
Survivors include two sons, Charlie Welton III of Greenwood and Tommie Lee Welton of the home; two daughters, Sara Ann Welton and Ada Aline Welton, both of the home; three brothers, Robert Welton, John Welton and James Welton, all of Greenwood; five sisters, Mattie Welton of Philadelphia, Gladys Speaks of Lanceaster, Calif., Ella Pugh of Emporia, Va., Thomasena Newell of Glassboro, N.J., and Mary Prince of Greenwood; and three grandchildren, one reared in the home, Demetrius Welton of the home.
The family is at the home.
Services will be announced by Robinson and Son Mortuary Inc., which is in charge.

Frederick Allen Parks

GREENWOOD — Frederick Allen Thomas Parks, 57, of 1305 Henderson Ave., widower of Sennie Payne Thomas, passed away April 11, 2001, at Self Memorial Hospital.
Born in Greenwood County, he was a son of Eula Mae McGee Thomas and Freddie Parks, and stepson of the late Nathaniel Thomas. He was a member of Johns Creek Baptist Church.
Survivors include his mother of the home; his father of Philadelphia; three daughters, Sabrina Thomas and Twanda Thomas, both of Greenwood and Karlisa Robinson of Suffolk, Va.; seven brothers, Donald Thomas, Terry Thomas, John Thomas, Tony Thomas and Jimmy Lee Calhoun, all of Greenwood, Victor Thomas of Temple Hill, Md., and Charles Thomas of Dale City, Va.; eight sisters, Deborah Holloway, Tracy Thomas, Sarah Childs, Linda Walters and Linda Strong, all of Greenwood, Margo Thomas of Columbia, Jeanette Price of Camp Springs, Md., and Geraldine Williams of Temple Hill; and four grandchildren.
Services will be announced by Percival-Tompkins Funeral Home, which is in charge.

Leola McIntosh Smith

MAPLE HEIGHTS, Ohio — Leola McIntosh Smith, 69, of 5445 Lee Road, Apt. 1, widow of Willie Smith, passed away April 9, 2001, at Marymount Hospital in Maple Heights.
Born in Calhoun Falls, S.C., she was a daughter of the late Oliver and Ethel McIntosh. She was a member of Brownoh AME Church, Calhoun Falls, and attended Mount Pleasant Church of God, Cleveland, where she was a missionary and a member of the choir.
Survivors include two daughters, Rachael Wheeler of the home and Gail Gardner of Cleveland; two brothers, Wallace McIntosh of Brooklyn, N.Y., and James Clinkscales of Atlanta; and a sister, Walla M. Gist of Columbia, S.C.

Robert M. 'Bob' Stanley

GREENWOOD - Robert M. 'Bob' Stanley, 59, of 1229 Woodlawn Road, passed away April 10, 2001, at his home.
Born in Greensboro, NC, he was the son of the late Judge and Mrs. Edwin M. Stanley. He was predeceased by his twin sister, Sue Stanley Carlan. He graduated from Wake Forest Univer-sity in 1963 with a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and in 1965, he earned a Master of Social Work degree from the School of Social Work of the University of NC at Chapel Hill.
Prior to moving to Greenwood, he had been a clinical social worker in various family service agencies as well as the Executive Director of Family Services of Lynchburg, Inc., Lynchburg, Virginia. He joined the Adult Division of the Beckman Center for Mental Health Services in Greenwood in 1973. In addition to being an outpatient mental health therapist, he was that Center's Volunteer Services Coordinator for many years. In 1989, he won the SC Department of Mental Health's statewide award for Staff Support to Volunteers. For over twenty years, a major portion of his work was serving as an examiner for seven area probate courts of persons involuntarily admitted to a psychiatric hospital. He retired in 1997 due to health reasons at which time he was honored for twenty-four years of outstanding service characterized by loyalty, dependability, courtesy and integrity.
He was a member of St. Mark United Methodist Church in Greenwood. A memorial service will be conducted Saturday, April 14 at 11:00 at St. Mark United Methodist Church with Reverend Ken Timmerman officiating.
It is requested that flowers be omitted and memorials be made to St. Mark United Methodist Church, 550 Highway 72 ByPass NW, Greenwood, SC 29649.

Charlie ‘Bug’ Welton Jr.

GREENWOOD — Services for Charlie “Bug” Welton Jr., of 212 Tompkins St., will be at 2 Saturday at Mount Tabor Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Alphonzo Counts, assisted by the Rev. Ulysses Parks. The body will be placed in the church at 1. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Pallbearers are Kenny Welton, Glen Rucker, Marion Baylor, Brawley Watts Jr., Earl Warren and Marion Park.
Honorary escorts are officers of the church.
Flower bearers are members of the missionary society.
Visitation is 7-8 Friday at the home.
Robinson and Son Mortuary Inc. is in charge.

A. Deford Cannon

SALUDA — Alton Deford Cannon, 67, of 608 Mount Willing Road, passed away April 12, 2001, at his home.
Born in Saluda County, he was a son of the late Callie Eugene and Madeline Matthews Cannon. He was a retired farmer.
Survivors include three sisters, Wilma Rae Mabus of Batesburg, Louise Koon of Leesville and Kate Clary of Saluda; and two brothers, Joe Pat Cannon of Greenwood and Lindy Cannon of West Columbia.
Services will be at 3 today at Ramey Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. Bobby Joyner and the Rev. David Cockrell. Burial will be in Billy Matthews Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to a charity of one’s choice.
Ramey Funeral Home is in charge.

Annie Mary Cobb

ABBEVILLE — Annie Mary Cobb, 78, of Abbeville Nursing Home, formerly of 1609 Old Abbeville Highway, passed away April 12, 2001, at Abbeville County Memorial Hospital.
Born in Abbeville County, she was a daughter of the late Murray and Laura Brown Cobb and a member of Fairfield Baptist Church. She lived in New York for more than 40 years, where she was a former member of Mount Zion Baptist Church.
Survivors include two sisters, Amanda Cobb of McCormick and Betty Cobb of Abbeville.
Services will be at 3 Sunday at Fairfield Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Michael Peppers. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The body will be placed in the church at 2:30.
The family is at the home of a niece, Mary Stackhouse, 115 Barnett St., Abbeville. Brown and Walker Funeral Home is in charge.
