SALUDA — Janie Crawford Owdom, 84, of 1261 Highway 378 East, widow of Joe Payne Owdom, passed away April 16, 2001, at Self Memorial Hospital in Greenwood.
Born in Saluda County, she was a daughter of the late Thomas F. and Alberta Davis Crawford. She was a homemaker and a member of Little Stevens Creek Baptist Church, where she was a former member of the choir and the Willing Workers.
Survivors include a son, Clifford T. Owdom of Saluda; a daughter, Faye O. Adams of Saluda; a brother, Theodore Crawford of Garden City, Ga.; a sister, Frances C. Mayson of Milano, Texas ; eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Little Stevens Creek Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Mike Hatfield. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Visitation is from 7-9 tonight at Ramey Funeral Home.
Memorials may be made to Little Stevens Creek Baptist Church Cemetery Fund or Building Fund, 1196 Meeting Street Road, Edgefield, S.C. 29824.
Ramey Funeral Home is in charge.

Elizabeth Wiley Wideman

GREENWOOD — Elizabeth Wiley Wideman, 94, of 135-B Brooks Stuart Drive, widow of Elisha Wideman, passed away April 18, 2001, at Self Memorial Hospital.
Born in Greenwood County, she was a daughter of the late Tom and Chloe Satchell Wiley. She was a member of Weston Chapel A.M.E. Church and the Women’s Aid Society No. 62.
Survivors include a sister, Louise Nesbitt of Greenwood; and seven grandchildren. Services will be announced by Percival-Tompkins Funeral Home, which is in charge.

James Benton

GREENWOOD — James Arrowood Benton Jr., 75, of 711 Sidney Drive, widower of Anna Belle Ward Benton, passed away April 20, 2001 at Self Memorial Hospital.
Born in Kingstree, he was the son of the late James A. Sr. and Bertha McKnight Benton. He was an avid Boy Scout, obtaining the rank of Eagle, and was a member of the Order of the Arrow. He was also a past Scout Master. He was a graduate of Kingstree High School and was an U.S. Marine Corps. veteran, having served in the Pacific Theater during World War II where he participated in the invasion of Iwo Jima. He was the recipient of numerous decorations including the Purple Heart, Silver Star, the Medal for Gallantry in Action and others. Benton worked as a police officer in Kingstree and in 1948 joined the South Carolina Highway Patrol. He retired in 1981 as a district lieutenant. He was a member of Rock Presbyterian Church where he was an elder emeritus and trustee and formerly served as chairman of the board of deacons, elder and clerk of the session.
Survivors include four daughters, Lois Mitchell of Greenwood, Betty Bigham of Florence, Mary Pinson of Piedmont and Jean Tinsley of Waterloo; a brother, George Benton of Kingstree; and nine grandchildren.
Services will be at 1 today at the Blyth Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. John Crawford officiating. Burial will be in Kingstree Memorial Gardens at 5:30 today. Pallbearers will be active and retired members of the S.C. Highway Patrol.
The family is at the home.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the South Carolina Troopers Association for Retirees, 4961 Broad River Road, Columbia, SC 29212, The American Heart Association, Columbia Office, PO Box 6604, Columbia, SC 29260 or to the American Lung Association, 1817 Gadsden St., Columbia, SC 29201-2392.

Raymond Griffith

SALUDA — Raymond Matthew Griffith, 87, of Route 5 David Jones Road, passed away April 20, 2001, at the Saluda Nursing Center.
Born in Saluda County, he was a son of the late William Lowery and Elsie Duffie Griffith. He was a self-employed electrician and plumber. He was a member of Butler United Methodist Church.
Survivors include a daughter, Brenda Raye Teague of Saluda; a brother, W. L. Griffith of Saluda; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be at 5:30 today at Butler United Methodist Church Cemetery, with the Rev. Fred Treaster officiating.
Visitation is from 4-5 today at Ramey Funeral Home, Saluda.
Memorials may be made to Butler United Methodist Church Cemetery Fund or Building Fund, 113 W. Wheeler Circle, Saluda, SC 29138 or to Saluda Nursing Center, P.O. Box 398, Saluda, SC 29138.

Naomi Bailey

GREENWOOD — Mary “Naomi” Kemp Bailey, 79, of 716 Logan Court, widow of Robert Brenton Bailey, passed away April 21, 2001, at Self Memorial Hospital.
Born in Greenwood, she was the daughter of the late Callison and Eva Rush Kemp. She was a graduate of Greenwood High School and Lander College where she received her bachelor of arts degree in education and received her masters degree in science and education from Clemson College. She formerly taught at Calhoun Clemson High School in Clemson, Southside Junior High School in Greenwood and retired from Ninety Six High School as a chemistry and physics teacher. She was a member of Woodfields Baptist Church and also a former member of the DAR and the Order of the Eastern Star. Survivors include a son, Brent Bailey of Greenwood; and a grandson.
Graveside services will be at 11 Monday at Bold Springs Baptist Church Cemetery with Dr. Robert Miller officiating.
Visitation is from 7-9 tonight at the home on Logan Court.

Edna Cannon

HONEA PATH — Edna Ruth Hanley Cannon, 73, of 10 Susan Ave., widow of James Marvin Cannon, passed away April 20, 2001, at St. Frances Hospital.
Born in Franklin Springs, Ga., she was a daughter of the late Howard Pinkney and Audry Allen Hanley. She was a charter member and Children’s Church teacher at Crossroads Fellowship Church. She was retired from Chiquola Manufacturing. Co.
Survivors include two sons, J.D. Cannon of Honea Path and Donnie Cannon of Due West; two brothers, Jerome Hanley of Belton and Howard Hanley of Honea Path; seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 3 Monday at Crossroads Fellowship Church, with the Revs. Rickey Knight and James Welch officiating. Burial will be in Eastview Cemetery. The body will be placed in the church at 2.
Visitation is from 7-9 tonight at Pruitt Funeral Home.
The family is at the home of a son, Doug Cannon, 823 Holliday Dam Road, Honea Path. Memorials may be made to Crossroads Fellowship Church, Box 303, Honea Path, SC 29654. Pruitt Funeral Home is in charge.

Elsie Donham

GREENWOOD — Elsie Batson Donham, 60, of 110 Cothran St., widow of Bill Donham, passed away April 21, 2001, at Self Memorial Hospital.
Visitation is from 7-9 Monday at South Greenwood Assembly of God, 911 Ninety Six Highway.
The family is at the home of her daughter Teresa Miller, 109 Saluda Street, Ninety Six.
Services will be announced by Harley Funeral Home, which is in charge.

Elizabeth Timmerman Gibson

NASHVILLE — Elizabeth Timmerman Gibson, 87, passed away April 19, 2001 in Nashville.
She was the daughter of Melvin L. and Rebecca Timmerman.
Graveside services will be at 2, Monday at Woodlawn Memorial Park in Greenville, SC. She attended Lander University in Greenwood and became a teacher of music and an author of Baptist Church literature. For many years she served on the Faculties of Summer Conferences of the Southern Baptist Church, conducting developmental workshops for people across the country who worked with children in their churches.
She is survived by a son, Taylor Gibson, a daughter, Elizabeth (Betty) Gibson and a granddaughter.
Crawford Mortuary & Crematory, Nashville is in charge.

Wilma Louise Hughes

GREENWOOD — Services for Wilma Louise Hughes will be at 1 Tuesday at Trinity United Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. Willie J. Key. Burial will be in Evening Star Memorial Gardens. The body will be placed in the church at noon.
Visitation is from 7-8 Monday evening at Robinson & Son Mortuary, Inc.
Pallbearers will be Titus Patterson, Tyrone Anderson, John Louden Jr., Eric Pinckett Sr., Ellis Arnold Jr. and Michael Carpenter.
Flower bearers will be United Methodist Women.
Honorary Pallbearers will be United Methodist Men.
Honorary Flower bearers will be Charmelettes Yellow Jasmine Garden Club, Visiting Nurses Associations and Virgin Heights Community Association.

Terry Martin

WARE SHOALS — Terry (Sawmill) Martin, 37, of 40 N. Greenwood Ave., husband of Sandra Martin, passed away April 21, 2001, at Self Memorial Hospital.
Born in McCormick County, he was the son of the late Clyde and Hazel Briggs Martin. He was a 1982 graduate of McCormick High School and a member of Holy Springs Baptist Church. He was employed by Satterfield Construction Co.
Survivors include his wife of the home; two brothers, Jimmy Martin of Augusta, Ga., and James Martin of McCormick; five sisters; Hazel Faye Green of Columbia, Dolly Bernice Anderson of Greenwood, Linda M. Freeman, Glenda M. Searle and Teresa Martin, all of McCormick.
Services will be at 2 Tuesday at Rose of Sharon Holiness Church, conducted by the Rev. Frank Hardy. The body will be placed in the church at 1.
The family is at the home of his sister, Dolly Anderson, 109 Wheat Drive, Greenwood. Robinson-Walker Funeral Service is in charge.

Monteria Yvonne Pettigrew

GREENWOOD — Monteria Yvonne Pettigrew, infant daughter of Montorio Pettigrew and Nikyia Yvonne Davis, passed away April 19, 2001, at Self Memorial Hospital.
Survivors include her mother of Greenwood and father of Abbeville; maternal grandparents, Larry and Linda Davis; and paternal grandparents, Calvin and Dorothy Pettigrew.
Services will be announced by Percival-Tompkins Funeral Home, which is in charge.

Frances B. West

GREENVILLE — Frances Louella Brown West, 80, widow of George W. West Jr., passed away April 19, 2001, at Greenville Memorial Medical Center.
Born in Madison, Wis., she was the daughter of the late Frank and Anna Thorson Brown. She was a homemaker and a member of the Lutheran Church of our Savior.
Survivors include a daughter, Katherine W. Fulmer of Simpsonville; a son, George W. West III of Greenwood; four grandchildren and a great-grandchild.
Graveside services will be at 3:30 Monday at Woodlawn Memorial Park, Greenville, Section R.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the charity of one’s choice. Woodlawn Funeral Home is in charge.
