COLUMBIA — Brenda Marie Griffin, 36, formerly of 110 Oakhill Drive, passed away Aug. 17, 2001 in Columbia. Born in Greenwood County, she was a daughter of Willie and Rosetta Lyons Griffin. She was a member of Springfield Baptist Church.
Surviving are her parents of Greenwood; one son, De’Marco Griffin of Greenwood; three daughters, Sharrika Griffin, Felicia Griffin and Ca’Daria Griffin all of Greenwood; two brothers, Melvin Griffin of Rock Hill and Willie Griffin of Greenwood; six sisters, Angela Tamara Griffin, Tonia Griffin and Christa Griffin and Linda Oliver of Greenwood and Wanda Sussewell Dula of Rome, Ga. and one grandaughter.
The family is at the home of her parents, 1609 E. Laurel Ave., Greenwood.
Percival-Tompkins Funeral Home is in charge.

Grady C. McCurry
ABBEVILLE — Grady C. McCurry, 69, of 601 N. Main St., husband of Syble V. McCurry, passed away Aug. 18, 2001, at Abbeville County Memorial Hospital.
Born in Abbeville County, he was a son of the late Frank and Icebell Tyner McCurry. He was a member of Crossroads Fellowship and was retired from Pirelli Cable. He was a Mason having served as past Master of Clinton Lodge 3, past Hesperian of No. 17, past Illustrious Master, member of Desawyer Council 16, Knights Temple Of Greenwood and a Shriner.
Surviving are his wife of the home; four sons, Charles F. McCurry, Joseph E. McCurry, W.E. McCurry and G.C. McCurry, all of Abbeville; two brothers, Bobby L. McCurry of Abbeville and Jerry McCurry of Greenwood; ten grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers are brothers of the Masonic Order.
Services will be 6 p.m. Monday at Crossroads Fellowship, conducted by the Rev. Rickey Knight and the Rev. James Blackwell. Burial with Masonic rites will follow in the Forest Lawn Memory Gardens, Abbeville. The body will be placed in the church at 5 Monday.
Visitation is from 6 to 8 tonight at Harris Funeral Home, Abbeville.
The family is at the home.
Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to Crossroads Fellowship Hwy. 20, Honea Path, SC 29654.

Max Theron Sargent
AIKEN — Max Theron Sargent, 80, of Aiken, husband of Frances Jane Gurly Sargent, passed away Aug. 17, 2001 at Aiken Regional Medical Center.
Born in Belton, he was a son of the late Thomas Lester Sargent and Bernice Elrod Sargent. He retired from the maintenance department at E.I. Dupont after 31 years of service. He was a member of Foreman Memorial Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon and trustee since 1955; had 37 of perfect attendance at Sunday school, was a member of Promise Keepers and was president of his Sunday school class.
Survivors in addition to his wife are two daughters, Norma Jean Shealy and Kathy Ann Barher both of Chapin; two brothers, Eugene Sargent of Greenwood and J.T. Sargent of Anderson; two sisters, Laura Fortson and Jennifer Trotter both of Greenwood; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Services are at 3 today at Foreman Baptist Church in New Ellenton, conducted by the Rev. Rick Rogers.
Memorials may be made to Foreman Memorial Baptist Church, c/o The Building Fund, 207 Smith Ave., New Ellenton, SC, 29809.

Virginia C. Storey
GLOVERVILLE— Virginia C. Storey, 64, of 296 Oak St., widow of Albert Storey, passed away Aug. 16, 2001, at Aiken Regional Medical Center.
Born in Saluda County, she was a daughter of the late Cleophus Corley and Annice Kirkland Corley. She was a retired textile employee and a member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary Post 10601.
Survivors include one daughter, Debbie Rosier of Saluda; two sisters, Doris McGee of Ridge Spring and Delora Berry of Saluda and a great granddaughter.
Services are at 2 today at Ramey Funeral Home in Saluda, conducted by the Rev. Kelly McKnight. Burial is in the Corley Family Cemetery.
Ramey Funeral Home is in charge.

Cornelia Trail
GREENWOOD — Cornelia Wiley Trail, 65, resident of 217 Karen Way, wife of Ladson G. Trail, passed away August 17, 2001 at Self Memorial Hospital.
Born in Abbeville County, May 10, 1936, she was a daughter of the late Robert M. and Lou Ella Weeks Wiley. She attended the Abbeville Public schools and was retired from Eastwill Sports Wear.
She was a very devoted and loving wife, mother, mother-in-law and grandmother. A member of Harris Baptist Church, she was also a member of the Willing Workers Sunday school class and the Joy Group of the Church.
Surviving in addition to her husband of the home are two daughters and sons-in-law, Shirley and Wayne Brooks of Hodges and Annette and Bruce Wheatley of Martinez, Ga; a a son, George H. Trail of Greenwood; two sisters, Virginia Gunter of Waterloo and A.B. Davis of Greenwood; grandchildren, Joey Brooks and Heather Brooks, both of Greenwood and Scott Wheatley of Martinez, Ga.
Funeral services will be conducted 3 p.m. Monday from the Harris Baptist Church with the Rev. Frank Thomas and the Rev. David Clegg officiating.
Burial will be in Greenwood Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers will be Joey Brooks, Scott Wheatley, Gene Latham, Larry Mobley, Bobby Woods and Alan Todd.
The body is at Blyth Funeral Home and will be placed in the church at 2 p.m. Monday.
The family is at the home on Karen Way and will receive friends at the funeral home from 5 to 7 Sunday afternoon.
Blyth Funeral Home is in charge.

John H. ‘Coon’ Devlin Sr.
GREENWOOD — John Henry “Coon” Devlin Sr., 72, of New Market Street, husband of Gladys Cantlow Devlin, passed away Aug. 19, 2001, at Self Memorial Hospital.
Born in McCormick County, he was a son of the late Joseph and Maggie Moore Devlin. He retired as a sanitation engineer in Newark, N.J., and was a member of Milway Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife of Bradley; six sons, John Henry Devlin Jr. of Bradley, Damon Robert Devlin, James Albert Devlin, Clarence William Devlin, and Fuquan Devlin, all of Greenwood and Joe Lewis Devlin of Irvington, N.J.; a sister, Ellen Wade of Chicago; 41 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.
The family will be at 5410 McCormick Highway 10, Bradley.
Services will be announced by Robinson & Son ortuary, Inc., which is in charge.

Buddy Dorn
BRADLEY — Floyd Edward “Buddy” Dorn, 69, of 408 Rushville Road, husband of Mimmie Chaffin Dorn, passed away Aug. 17, 2001, at his home.
Born in Greenwood County, he was a son of the late Eddie E. and Annie Deal Dorn. He was an Army veteran of the Korean War and a retired employee of E.I. Dupont in Aiken. A member of Bold Springs Baptist Church and the Brotherhood of the church, he was also a member of V.F.W. Lodge No. 5877 in Aiken.
Survivors include his wife of the home; a daughter, Tina D. Sowers of Los Alamos, N.M.; three sons, Charles “Eddie” Dorn, Roger “Quail” Dorn and Phillip “Jelly” Dorn, all of Bradley; two sisters, Aileen D. Adams of Ninety Six and Josie D. Walker of Greenwood; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Services were conducted at 3 Sunday at Bold Springs Baptist Church by the Revs. Chris Garrison and Archie Evans. Burial was in the church cemetery.
Pallbearers were George Deal, Bill Dorn, Jay McCarthy, Darrell Craig, Phillip Dorn, Roger Dorn, Joseph Sowers and Colby Dorn.
Honorary escorts were members of the Brotherhood of the church, along with Broadus Collins, Richard Melton, John Tom Bannister, Roger Dillashaw, Mike Chaffin, Leon “Rooster” Adams and Tim Adams.
The family is at the home.
Memorials may be made to the Challenge to Build Program of Bold Springs Baptist Church, 2806 Callison Road, Bradley, S.C. 29819 or to Hospice Care of the Piedmont, 408 West Alexander Ave., Greenwood, S.C. 29646.

ABBEVILLE — Francis Lawson Everett, 80, passed away Aug. 20, 2001, at Abbeville County Memorial Hospital.
Born in Spartanburg County, he was a son of the late Joseph Walker and Catherine Link Everett. He retired from Milliken Mills and was a member of Abbeville A.R.P. Church.
Survivors include two sisters, Mrs. Earl Cowan of Greenwood and Mrs. Jack Vandiver of Athens, Ga. Graveside services are at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Long Cane Cemetery, conducted by Dr. Randy Ruble and the Rev. Darrell New.
Visitation is at the cemetery after the service.
The family is at the home of a sister, Mrs. Earl Cowan, 201 Sheffield Road, Greenwood.
Memorials may be made to Abbeville A.R.P. Church c/o Mrs. David Beaty 74 Taylor Lane, Abbeville, S.C. 29620.

Barbara McGrier
WARE SHOALS — Barbara Ann McGrier, 37, of 104 Nova Court, passed away Aug. 19, 2001, at Self Memorial Hospital in Greenwood.
Born in Greenwood, she was a daughter of Robert McGrier and the late Eloise Rapley McGrier. She graduated from Ware Shoals High School and was employed as a supervisor at the Emerald Center. She was a member of Macedonia C.M.E. Church, Hodges.
Survivors include a daughter, Nicole McGrier of the home; her father of the home; and three brothers, Jimmy Rapley of Cokesbury, Warren McGrier of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Charles McGrier of Simpsonville.
The family is at the home.
Services will be announced by Robinson-Walker Funeral Service, which is in charge.

‘Bunk’ Monroe
GREENWOOD — John Francis “Bunk” Monroe, 90, of 238 Grace Terrace, husband of Verena Peterson Monroe, passed away Aug. 20, 2001, at his home.
Visitation is from 7-9 Tuesday at Blyth Funeral Home.

Willie J. ‘Agg’ Strong
GREENWOOD — Willie James “Agg” Strong, 70, of 115 Strong St., husband of Marie Williams Strong, passed away Aug. 20, 2001, at Self Memorial Hospital.
Born in Greenwood County, he was a son of the late Homer and Daisy Mathis Strong. He was a former employee of Belk’s Department Store and a member of Trinity United Methodist Church.
Survivors include his wife of the home; a son, Willie Juner Strong of Greenwood; a daughter, Helen Ann Strong of Greenwood; a brother, Homer Juner Strong of Greenwood; three sisters, Doris Butler and Shirley Ross, both of Greenwood and Ethel Williams of Baltimore; five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

GREENWOOD — John Henry Winkler, 78, of 307 Jackson St., widower of Vivian Shirley Winkler, passed away Aug. 19, 2001, at Self Memorial Hospital.

William E. Gowan
GREENWOOD — William E. “Poppa” Gowan, 79, of Memphis, Tenn., formerly of Greenwood, husband of Mildred Lackey Gowan, passed away Aug. 21, 2001, at Primacy Parkway Nursing Center in Memphis.
Born in Greenville, he was a son of the late Furman L. and Nancy Holt Gowan. He retired from Monsanto and was a Navy Seabee veteran of World War II and a member of the Episcopal Church of the Resurrection, Greenwood.
Survivors include his wife of Memphis; two daughters, Mrs. David (Lynne) Wells of Memphis and Mrs. Joe (Pamela) Stevens of Tucson, Ariz.; seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Services will be private.
