Addie Cann
ABBEVILLE — Addie Lee Hill Cann, 94, of 438 Jets Landing Road, widow of Hertferd Cann, passed away Monday, Dec. 24, 2001, at Abbeville County Memorial Hospital.
Born in Abbeville County, she was a daughter of the late Joseph H. and Rosa Lee Bowen Hill and stepdaughter of Troyas Pruitt Hill. She was a member of Bells United Methodist Church and a charter member of the United Methodist Women of the church.
Survivors include two granddaughters; two great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Wilma Giles and Louise Prince, both of Abbeville.
Graveside services are at 3 Wednesday at Bells United Methodist Church Cemetery, conducted by the Revs. Lowry and Beth Drennon.
Visitation is from 2-3 Wednesday at the church.
The family is at the home of a daughter-in-law, Joan Wilson Cann, 436 Jets Landing Road.
Memorials may be made to Bells United Methodist Church Building Fund, 2540 Flat Rock Road, Abbeville, S.C. 29620.

Jannie C. Nash Chenault
GREENWOOD — Jannie Christine Nash Chenault, of 1219 Florida Ave., wife of James A. Chenault, passed away Monday, Dec. 24, 2001, at her home.
Born in Abbeville, she was a daughter of the late Wilson and Pearl Esther Faulkner Nash. She was a member of Mount Moriah Baptist Church, where she was a member of the Missionary Society and the Club of Wisdom. She was a retired elementary school teacher from the McCormick School District.
Survivors include her husband of the home; a son, Kenneth Jerome Chenault of Fort Mill; two daughters, Lucy Pearl Archie of Easley and Jamesina Cason of Macon, Ga.; and a sister, Helen Tinch of Calhoun Falls.
The family is at the home.
Services will be announced by Parks Funeral Home, which is in charge.

Willie ‘Doon’ Peterson Jr.
GREENWOOD — Willie “Doon” Peterson Jr., 53, of 442 Marion Ave., husband of Bobbie Jean Jones Peterson, passed away Sunday, Dec. 23, 2001, at Self Regional Healthcare.
Born in Greenwood County, he was a son of Lucy Pinkney Peterson and the late Willie Peterson Sr. He was a former employee of Greenwood Mills and a member of Johns Creek Baptist Church. He attended Greenwood public schools, graduating from Brewer High School.
Survivors include his wife of California; his mother of the home; three sons, Alex Ricardo Peterson of Baltimore, Mario Fitzgerald Peterson of California and Kassin Peterson of the home; two daughters, Pamela Marchelle Howell of Baltimore and Ethel Mae Peterson of Greenwood; a stepdaughter, Leona Oli of Baltimore; a sister, Mildred Ann Gilbeaux of California; and 10 grandchildren.
The family is at the home.
Services will be announced by Robinson & Son Mortuary Inc., which is in charge.

James Calvin ‘J.C.’ Smith
HODGES — James Calvin “J.C.” Smith, 77, of 3517 Ridge Road, husband of Carrie Anderson Smith, passed away Sunday, Dec. 23, 2001, at Self Regional Healthcare in Greenwood.
Born in Greenwood County, he was a son of the late Ernest and Lula Bell Williams Smith. He was a World War II veteran and a member of Mars Hill Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife of the home; three sons, Johnny Smith of the home, Michael Smith of Greenwood and Calvin Smith of Kershaw; a daughter, Katrina Smith of Hodges; a brother, John Smith of Atlanta; a sister, Ruth Myers of Atlanta; 14 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and a nephew reared in the home, Claudie Smith of Hodges.
The family is at the home.
Services will be announced by Percival-Tompkins Funeral Home, Greenwood, which is in charge.

James ‘R.B.’ Smith
GREENWOOD — Services for James “R.B.” Smith, of 220 McKellar Drive, will be at 2 Thursday at Pine Pleasant Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Ernest Cannon. The body will be placed in the church at 1. Burial is in Greenwood Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers are Ezell Sanders, Codell Holloway, Tracey Lester, John Dale, Jason Lester, Mitchell Glover and Kelvin Calhoun.
Flower bearers are Mary McCauley, Elaine Frazier, Doris Burton, Sarah Cook, Margaret Lester, Linda Edwards and Angelia Sprowl.
Visitation is from 6:30-7:30 Wednesday at Percival-Tompkins Funeral Home, which is in charge.

Myrtie Oswald Smith
LEESVILLE — Myrtie Irene Oswald Hall Smith, 94, of 623 Perry Taylor Road, passed away Sunday, Dec. 23, 2001. Born in Lexington County, she was a daughter of the late Henry and Mary Craps Oswald and a member of Providence Baptist Church. She was first married to the late Brice Hall, and second to the late George Washington Smith.
Survivors include six sons, Clifton Hall of Saluda, Brenton Hall, J.B. Hall, Ralph Hall, George W. Smith Jr. and Larry Gene Smith, all of Leesville; five daughters, Carrie Lou Sperlock of Ridgeway, Irene Smith, Earlene Swygert, Mary Jane Palmer and Patricia S. Rodgers, all of Leesville; three stepdaughters, Edna Storey, Loretta Smith and Mittie Ruth Price, all of Leesville; two brothers, the Rev. Frank Oswald of Texas and Charlton “Bo” Oswald of Batesburg; a sister, Annie Lee Wood of Batesburg; 29 grandchildren; 51 great-grandchildren; 10 great-great-grandchildren; 17 step-grandchildren, 24 step-great-grandchildren and three step-great-great-grandchildren.
Services are at 2 Wednesday at Providence Baptist Church, conducted by the Revs. Frank Mims and Frank Oswald. Burial is in Old Samaria Baptist Church Cemetery.
Pallbearers are Ray Smith, Brice Swygert, Kenneth Hall, Ronnie Hall, Shane Davis, Bruce Hall, Michael Smith and Johnny Ellisor.
Honorary pallbearers are deacons of the church.
Visitation is from 6:30-8:30 tonight at Milton Shealy Funeral Home.
The family is at the home.

Kathryn S. ‘Katy’ Stirling
McCORMICK — Kathryn Stephenson “Katy” Stirling, 43, wife of Billy C. Stirling, passed away Sunday, Dec. 23, 2001.
Born in Florence, she was a daughter of Minerva Blalock Stephenson and the late Ralph M. Stephenson. She was educated in South Carolina public and private schools, graduating from Willington Academy, Orangeburg, in 1976. She received a bachelor of science degree in early childhood education from Winthrop College, Rock Hill, and a master’s of education degree from Lander University, Greenwood. She taught in McCormick public schools for 19 years and, more recently, at Long Cane Elementary in Abbeville. She was a member of Lincolnton Baptist Church, where she was a member of the choir and the Homer Legg Sunday School Class.
Survivors include her husband of McCormick; her mother of Orangeburg; a brother, Ralph M. Stephenson Jr. of Pasadena, Md.; and a sister, Dr. Angela S. Lindner of Gainesville, Fla.
Graveside services are at 10 a.m. Friday in Memorial Park Cemetery, Orangeburg, conducted by the Rev. Gary Johnson and Father Michael Polewczak.
Memorial services are on Jan. 1 at 11 a.m. at Lincolnton Baptist Church, Lincolnton, Ga.

Capt. James W. Corley, USN (Ret.)
SEATTLE — Captain James W. Corley, USN (Ret.), 1221 Minor Avenue, Seattle, WA, passed away at his home December 19, 2001, of pancreatic cancer.
Capt. Corley was born in Edgefield County, S.C., March 1, 1925, to Margaret Callison Corley and Joseph Clyde Corley. He was a graduate of Edgefield High School, the University of South Carolina, and USC School of Law. Over the years he studied at Harvard, the University of Washington , and the University of Paris, the Sorbonne.
During the Second World War, he served in the Pacific aboard the Destroyer Escort Earl K. Olson as communications officer. Subsequently he was in Japan during the Korean War. After transferring to the Judge Advocate General Corps, he was with Operation Deep Freeze, headquartered in Christchurch, NZ, and with the US embassy in Rome. Capt. Corley was a linguist, with specialties in French and Russian. Upon retiring from the Navy, he settled in Seattle, where he continued his studies in languages and enjoyed traveling.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and brothers Joseph Clyde Corley, Jr., and Richard Eugene Corley. He is survived by sisters, Margaret Reames of Spartanburg, Norine Lee, of Pfafftown, NC, Adeline Johnson of Warrenton, VA, and brother Tom Corley of Madison, AL, as well as nieces Linda Feldtmose of Crofton, MD, Janet LeFrancois, of Spartanburg, Margie Lindsey, of Cordova, TN, Jennifer Turner of Palm Beach Gardens, FL, Cindy Plyler, of Alpharetta, GA, Heather Kiger, of King, NC, Amanda and Alison Corley of Madison, AL, Tracy Toth of Baraboo, WI, Deniece Johnson of Warrenton, VA, and nephews Bill Reames of Due West, Mike Reames of Spartanburg, Bob Lee III of Winston-Salem, NC, and John Johnson of Warrenton, VA.
A graveside service will be held Saturday, December 29, at 1PM at Gilgal Baptist Church, Edgefield County, near the junction of highways SC51 & SC61.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Swedish Hospice, 5701 6th Ave. S., Suite 504, Seattle, WA 98108, or to Gilgal Baptist Church, c/o Sam Morgan, Treas., 41 Morgan Bussey Rd, Edgefield, SC, 29824.

Jack Mangum
GREENWOOD — Jack A. Mangum, 80, of 204 Lakeshore Drive, husband of Claire Chandanais Mangum, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 25, 2001 at his home.
Born in Greenville County, he was a son of the late Bryant V. and Letha Raines Mangum. He was a former manager of Kentucky Fried Chicken and Pizza Inn of Clinton. He was also former owner of Isle Park Laundry in Portsmouth, R.I. He was a World War II veteran and of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include his wife of the home, two sons, Jack Allen Mangum of Sitka, Alaska and Jack. W. Walker of Mountville; a daughter, Sherry Lemieszek of Laurens; one sister, Patrica Humphries of Inman; nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Memorial services will be 11 Thursday at Harley Funeral Home with the Rev. Tommy Cartledge officiating.
The family is at the home.
The family asks that memorials be made to HospiceCare of the Piedmont Inc.

Dora Mae Patterson
McCORMICK — Dora Mae Brown Patterson, 51, of Route. 2, wife of Curtis Patterson, passed away Monday, Dec. 24, 2001, at Self Regional Healthcare.
Born in McCormick, she was a daughter of the late Fred and Christine Brown Wardlaw. She was a member of Tranquil A.M.E. Church, where she served as a class leader, on the Stewardess Board and the Usher Board. She was a 1971 graduate of McCormick High School and was a former employee of Greenwood Mills’ Harris Plant.
Survivors include her husband of the home; four sisters, Estella Morton of Greenwood, Genora Wardlaw, Mary Chiles and Brenda Lyons, all of McCormick and one brother, Fred Wardlaw Jr. of McCormick.
The family is at the home.
Services will be announced by Walker Funeral Home, which is in charge.

Horace “H.T.” Warner
GREENWOOD — Horace Tillman “H.T.” Warner, 73, of 1821 U.S. 221 South, husband of Betty Coursey Warner, passed away Monday, Dec. 24, 2001, at Wesley Commons.
Born in Greenwood County, he was a son of the late Horace Tillman Sr. and Elvie Stockman Warner. He was educated in the Greenwood public schools and served as president of Greenwood Stock Yard Inc. He also was a member of Main Street United Methodist church, where he was a member of the Mason Sunday School class.
Survivors include his wife of the home; two daughters, Susan W. Johnson of Goose Creek and Elizabeth “Betsy” W. Clem of Columbia; two sisters, Marian W. Eskew and Evelyn W. Page, both of Clemson; a brother, Andrew Elbert “Boo” Warner of Greenwood; and two grandchildren.
Services are at 2 Thursday at Blyth Funeral Home Chapel, conducted by the Revs. Larry Jenkins and Matthew Bixby. Burial is in Greenwood Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers are Warner’s nephews.
Honorary escort will be Danny K. Warner, Danny L. Warner, Jack Martin, Cliff Eakin, Tom Gary and Fred Alewine.
Visitation is from 7-8:30 Wednesday at Blyth Funeral Home.
The family is at the home.
Memorials may be made to Main Street United Methodist Church, 211 N. Main St., Greenwood, S.C. 29646 or to the charity of one’s choice.
