NINETY SIX — Walter Barren “W.B.” Adams, 61, husband of Betty Ann Carroll Adams, of 2203 Ninety Six Highway, passed away Thursday, Dec. 27, 2001, at Self Regional Medical Center.
Born in Saluda County, he was a son of Sara Iona Kitchens Adams and the late Walter B. Adams Sr. He was employed with Southpointe Exxon and Security Forces of Greenwood, and was a former employee of Parke-Davis (now Kendall Healthcare Products). He was a member of Woodfields Baptist Church, where he was a deacon, and a member of the Mens III Sunday School Class.
Survivors include his wife of the home; his mother of Ninety Six; a son, James Adams of Ninety Six; a daughter, Jo Ann Rush of Ninety Six; five sisters, Fannie Mae Turner, Ophelia Dunn, Linda Willette Bledsoe, Alice Davis, all of Saluda, and Melma Hawkins of Ninety Six; and five brothers, Thomas Adams, Clyde Adams, Cecil Adams, all of Saluda, Leaverne Adams of Ninety Six, and John Q. Adams of Atlanta.
Services will be at 2 Saturday at Woodfields Baptist Church conducted by Dr. Robert Miller. Burial is in Greenwood Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers will be deacons of Woodfields Baptist Church.
Honorary escorts will be members of the Mens III Sunday School Class of Woodfields Baptist Church.
Visitation is from 7-9 tonight at Harley Funeral Home.
The family is at the home of a son, James Adams, 2109 Ninety Six Highway, Ninety Six.
Harley Funeral Home is in charge.

Pauline Edwards
GREENWOOD — Pauline Kidd Edwards, 81, widow of Stephen Selby Edwards, of 904 Ninety Six Highway, passed away Thursday, Dec. 27, 2001, at her home.
Visitation will be from 7-9 tonight at Blyth Funeral Home.
The family is at the home of a daughter, Brenda Culbertson, 945 Sunset Drive.
Services are incomplete, and will be announced by Blyth Funeral Home, which is in charge.

Sissie Langford
SALUDA — Frances “Sissie” Langford, 73, widow of Leroy Langford, of Johnston Highway, passed away Thursday, Dec. 27, 2001, at University Hospital in Augusta.
Born in Saluda County, she was a daughter of the late James M. and Mary Ethel Stone Edwards. She was retired from textiles and was a member of Bethlehem Methodist Church.
Survivors include a sister, Bobbie Jean E. Jackson of Eureca; and a brother, Franklin G. Edwards of Gilbert.
Services will be at 2 Saturday at Ramey Funeral Home Chapel conducted by Rev. Wayne Smith. Burial will be in Travis Park Cemetery.
Visitation is from 6-8 tonight at Ramey Funeral Home.
Memorials may be made to Bethlehem United Methodist Church, c/o 410 N. Main St., Saluda, S.C., 29138.

Betty McConnell
McCORMICK — Betty Parks McConnell, 57, of McCormick Manor, passed away Thursday, Dec. 27, 2001. Born in McCormick County, she was a daughter of Blanche W. Parks and the late Jim Parks. She was a graduate of McCormick High School, retired from the Huddle House, and a member of Plum Branch Baptist Church.
Survivors include her mother of Plum Branch; a son, Brian Todd of Abbeville; two daughters, Kimberly McConnell of Abbeville, and Donna T. Hall of Greenwood; four brothers, George E. Parks of Lauderdale, Miss., James (Podgy) Parks, Ralph N. (Demp) Parks, and Donnie (Hootie) Parks, all of Plum Branch; and six grandchildren.
Graveyard services are at 2 Saturday in Plum Branch Cemetery.
Visitation is from 7-9 tonight at Strom Funeral Home.
The family is at the home.

Dora Patterson
McCORMICK — Services for Dora Mae Brown Patterson, of Route 2, are at 1 Friday at Tranquil A.M.E. Church, conducted by the Rev. Derrick Scott, assisted by the Revs. Joe Carwell and Joe Leverette. The body will be placed in the church at noon. Burial is in the church cemetery.
Pallbearers are trustees of the church.
Flower bearers are members of the Stewardess Board and members of the McCormick High School Class of 1971.

Raymond Ashley
GREENWOOD — Raymond R. Ashley, 76, of 308 Alabama Ave., husband of Elsie Lois Autry Ashley, passed away Thursday, Dec. 27, 2001, at Self Regional Medical Center.
Born in Lexington, he was a son of the late Albert and Henrietta Lowry Ashley. He was retired from Greenwood Mills, Durst Plant, where he was a member of the Quarter Century Club. He was also a member of Greenwood Lodge #358 A.F.M., Grendel Pentecostal Holiness Church, and the Adult Sunday School Class of the church.
Survivors include his wife of the home; a daughter, Patricia Rice of Greenwood; a sister, Loree Hoffman of York; one grandchild and two great-grandchildren.
Services are at 2 Sunday at Grendel Pentecostal Holiness Church, conducted by the Rev. James Tollison. The body will be placed in the church at 1. Burial is in Greenwood Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers are Howard Cook, Jeff Fulmer, Johnny Rodgers, Marshall Avery, Jessie Reardon and Arthur Cox.
Visitation is tonight from 7-9 at Harley Funeral Home.
The family is at the home.

GREENWOOD — Jamon Kermit Baker Jr., 40, resident of 116 Greenbriar Road, passed away Dec. 28 near Ware Shoals.
Services will be announced by Blyth Funeral Home, which is in charge.

Margaret Brown
SALUDA — Margaret Louise Dozier Brown, 73, of 2340 Duncan Rd., wife of Pierce Brown Jr., passed away Friday, Dec. 28, 2001, at her home.
Born in Saluda County, she was a daughter of the late Hillary and Jennie Abney Dozier. She was a member of the Bethlehem Baptist Church, where she served as a Deaconess, Mother of the Church, member of the Senior Choir, Missionary Society, and past president of the Youth Choir. She was also a member of the Satterwhite-Brown Order of Eastern Star #26, president of Women Home Aide Society #88 and the Ever-Ready Club #1. She was retired from Quality Stitching.
Survivors include her husband of the home; seven daughters, Margaret Green of Toms River, N.J., Janie Alsup and Catherine Brown, both of Greenville; Helen Robinson of Oxen Hill, Md., Lois Alston, Lawrenceville, Ga., Annie Brown and Glenda Coates, both of Saluda; two sons, James D. Brown of Wagner and George Brown of Reno, Nev.; three sisters, Ida Mae Dozier and Tennie Ruth Lott, both of Saluda, and Dorothy Davis of Bronx, N.Y.; 23 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren and six great-great grandchildren.
Services are at 2 Monday at the Bethlehem Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Calvin Robinson. The body will be placed in the church at 1. Burial is in the church cemetery.
Pallbearers are members of Pearl Chapter Masonic Lodge #118.
Flower bearers are members of Satterwhite-Brown Order of Eastern Star #26.
Visitation is at 4 Sunday at the Butler & Sons Funeral Home.

Born in Carlton, Ga., she was a daughter of the late Otis T. and Jessie Carithers Kid. She was retired from Emerald Day Care Learning Center, a member of New Market Baptist Church, and also a member of the Ladies Sunday School Class.
Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Randy (Brenda) Culbertson of Greenwood; four brothers, Guy Kidd, Theron Kidd and Bryant Kidd, all of Greenwood and Richard Kidd of Augusta, Ga.; two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 Saturday at New Market Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Buddy Wiles. The body will be placed in the church at 1. Burial will be in Greenwood Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers will be Jason Steinberg, Chris Kidd, Larry Kidd, Jimmy Kidd, Jack Steinberg, Matt Culbertson and Doug Hislop.
Honorary escorts will be members of the Ladies Sunday School Class of New Market Baptist Church, and Mary Ellen Guido.

Mabel Murff
GREENWOOD — Mabel Miller Murff, 98, of Hampton House, widow of Fred L. Murff, passed away Friday, Dec. 28, 2001, at National Health Care in Greenwood.
Born in Lexington, N.C., she was a daughter of the late Benjamin F. and Margaret Marvin Miller. She was retired from United Telephone Company. She was a member of First Baptist Church, the Benson Sunday School Class, the Senior Citizens Kitchen Band, the United Daughters of the Confederacy, and was the oldest living member of the Mary Pinckney Outzs Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star.
Survivors include three sons, Arol Maurice Murff of Chesapeake, Va., Fred Landreth Murff and George Livingston Murff, both of Greenwood; five daughters, Doris M. Davis of Graceville, Fla., Betty M. Jacks of Abbeville, Rosalie M. Broughton of Murray, Ky., Phyllis M. Hagan of Bennettsville, and Barbara M. Gatlin of Greenwood; 22 grandchildren, 49 great-grandchildren and 10 great-great grandchildren.
Services will be at 2:30 Sunday at the First Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Kenneth Standley. The body will be placed in the church at 1:30. Burial will be in Hodges Cemetery.
Pallbearers are grandsons.
Honorary escorts are members of the Mary Pinckney Outzs Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star.
Visitation is tonight from 6-8 at Blyth Funeral Home.

FLORIDA — James Wilson Sproles, 81, of Hernando, Fla., widower of Jeanne H. Sproles, passed away Saturday, Dec. 22, 2001.
Born in Greenwood, and formerly of Maxton, N.C., he was a son of the late James Wilson Sproles and Eunice B. Martin Sproles. He was a furniture salesman, a member of Leroy Rooks VFW Post #4252, Past District #7 Commander Pup Tent #76, Military Order of Cooties, and was a WWII Army veteran. He was of the Protestant faith.
Survivors include a son, James W. Sproles IV, of Hernando; a daughter, Karen Janota of Lecanto; two sisters, Mary Frances Hart of Denver, Colo., and Lynn Wilkie of Anderson, and one grandson.
Hooper Funeral Home is in charge.

Bill Eves
CROSS HILL — William Lewis “Bill” Eves, 81, formerly of 493 Ridge Hill Road, widower of Dorothy Kettler Eves, passed away Sunday, Dec. 2, 2001, at Self Regional Healthcare.
Born in Leslie, Mich., he was a son of the late William L. and Juliette Eves. He retired from General Motors, Chevrolet Division in Detroit. He was a former member of Cross Hill Volunteer Fire Department and attended Cross Hill Baptist Church.
Surviving is a brother, Thomas Eves of South Lions, Mich.
Graveside services are at 11 Tuesday in the Cross Hill Baptist Church Cemetery, conducted by the Rev. Phillip Wade.
Visitation is from 7-8 tonight at Blyth Funeral Home.

Laura Vaughn Gordon
NINETY SIX — Laura Vaughn Gordon, 87, of 123 Herndon Drive, widow of John Allen Gordon, passed away Saturday, Dec. 1, 2001, at her home.
Born in Laurens County, she was a daughter of the late Johnathan and Lilly Hellams Vaughn. She was the former owner of Gordons Greenhouse. She was a former member of Greenville Presbyterian Church, where she was a member of the Circle No. 1, the Ladies Bible Class and the Choir. She was a member of Temple Baptist Church, where she was a member of the Ladies Sunday School Class.
Survivors include two daughters, Patricia Ann Smallwood of Ninety Six and Donna Lynn Higdon of Donalds; two sisters, Vera Kelly of Greenwood and Essie Henderson of Columbia; a brother, Carl Vaughn of Columbia; 5 grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren.
Services are at 11 Tuesday at Harley Funeral Home Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Charles Owens and the Rev. George Wilson. Burial is in Greenville Presbyterian Church Cemetery.
Pallbearers are Jason Higdon, Gayle Vaughn, Joey Duffy, Michael McAllister, Ellis Gunnels and Walt Pruitt.
