Wayne Russell. Ardis, Sr., 59, husband of Carol Hodge Ardis, died Monday, March 7, 2005 at his home.

Born in Sumter, he was a son of the late Fred Ardis and the late Beatrice Brown Ardis.

Mr. Ardis was a self-employed cabinet maker and of the Baptist faith.

Surviving are his wife of Sumter; two daughters, Linda A. Bell and Beverly Faye Ardis both of Sumter; four brothers, Thomas Ardis, Will Ardis, Henry Ardis and John Ardis all of Sumter; four sisters, Vivian Earles of Sumter, Earline Skelcher of California; Dianne Arrants of Longs, S.C. and Virginia Verhoeven of Loris, S.C.; and four grandchildren.

Funeral Services will be held at 2 P.M. Thursday in the Chapel of the Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home with Rev. Don Riner officiating.

Burial will be in the Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.

Nephews will serve as Pallbearers.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 P.M. Wednesday at the Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home and other times at the home, 400 Hudson Graham Road.

Memorials may be made to Providence Baptist Church Children’s Fund, 2445 Old Manning Road, Sumter, S. C. 29150.

Annette Caughman Pate

1905-2005

Annette Caughman Pate, 99, widow of Furman Lee Pate, Sr., died Sunday, March 13, 2005 at the McLeod Medical Center in Dillon.

Born in Lee County, she was a daughter of the late Frank Caughman and the late Janie McNeil Caughman.

Mrs. Pate was a member of Main Street United Methodist Church in Dillon.

Surviving are a daughter, Alice Pate Best of Dillon; two sons, Frank M. Pate and wife Betty of Myrtle Beach and Herbert C. Pate and wife Barbara of Sumter; a daughter-in-law, Jackie Skipper Pate of Effingham; and a number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a son, Furman Lee Pate, Jr.

Funeral Services will be held at12:00 Noon Wednesday in the Chapel of the Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home with the Rev. Allison Best-Teague officiating.

Burial will be in the Marshall Methodist Church Cemetery, old Camden Road in Lee County.

Grandsons will serve as Pallbearers.

The family will receive friends from 11 to 12 Noon Wednesday at the Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home.

Raymond Benenhaley, Sr.

1913-2005

Raymond Benenhaley, Sr., 91, widower of Rosa Lee Ray Benenhaley, died Monday, March 14, 2005 at his home.

Born in Dalzell, he was a son of the late Henry Benenhaley and the late Mary Ray Benenhaley.

Mr. Benenhaley was the oldest member of Long Branch Baptist Church and was a member of the Men’s Adult Sunday School Class. He was a retired farmer.

Surviving are two daughters, Brenda Jones of Dalzell and Joyce Piucci of Sumter; three sons, Gene Benenhaley of Manning, Raymond Benenhaley, Jr. and Benny Benenhaley of Dalzell; two brothers, John Benenhaley and Ernest Benenhaley of Dalzell; eight sisters, Gertrude Benenhaley, Peggy Hood, Connie Buckner, Lois Cook, Alice Chase, Theo Carpenter, Ann Shumaker of Dalzell and Henrietta Benenhaley of Sumter; 8 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren; and 1 great-great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by three sisters, Gladys Ray, Estelle Benenhaley and Louise Benenhaley.

Funeral services will be held at 2 P.M. Thursday at Long Branch Baptist Church with Rev. Carroll Waddell, Rev. Roger Snipes, and Rev. Sim Smith officiating.

Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Mike Ray, Eddie Dean Benenhaley, Tony Carpenter, Henry Allen Benenhaley, Johnathan French, and Jeffery French.

Honorary Pallbearers will be members of the Men’s Adult Sunday School Class of Long Branch Baptist Church.

The family will receive friends at the home of his daughter, 5125 Seymour Road, Dalzell.

Ralph S. Gates, Jr.

1926 - 2005

Sumter, S. C. - Ralph Sheridan Gates, Jr., 78, husband of Mary “Pat” Johnston Gates, died Wednesday, March 16, 2005 at the Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born in Mechanicsburg, Pa., he was a son of the late Ralph Sheridan Gates, Sr. and the late Edna Lickel Gates.

Mr. Gates was a member and former Trustee of Bethel Baptist Church. He was a former employee of Sumter Ice & Fuel Company and was retired President of Broadway, Brunson & Gates, Inc. He was a U. S. Army veteran of World War II at which time he served in the European Theater and later was a veteran of the Korean Conflict.

Surviving are his wife of Sumter; two daughters, Patty Creech and husband Chip of Sumter; Peggy Lester and husband Buddy of Manning; a brother, Ronald Gates of Enola, Pa.; two sisters, Edith Mohn of Enola, Pa. and Betty Smith of Holiday, Fla.; 6 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Dale Gates McAllister; a brother, Bobby Gates; two sisters, Evelyn Hartszell and Gladys Bircher.

Funeral services will be held at 3 P.M. Saturday in the Chapel of the Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home with Rev. Keith Burgess and Rev. Leverne Hancock officiating.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 P.M. Friday at the Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home and other times at the home.

Jerry Lee Gentil, 68, husband of Nancy Austin Gentil, died Friday April 1, 2005 at Tuomey Health Care Systems.

Born in Peoria, Ill. he was the son of the late Howard Gentil and Arvilla Duchesne Gentil.

Mr. Gentil was a retired Staff Sgt. from the U.S. Air Force after 20 years of service and was a Vietnam veteran.

Surviving are his wife of Sumter; one son, Daniel Gentil and wife Phyllis of Las Vegas, Nevada; one daughter, Patricia Bunoe and husband Manuel of Cudahay, Wisc.; three step-sons, Phil Player and wife Gina of Lewisville, N.C., Tony Player and wife Gail of Sumter and Alex Player of Sumter; one brother, David Gentil and wife Joy of Watertown, Wisc.; 6 grandchildren, Aaron, Ashley, Adam and Allison Gentil all of Las Vegas, Nevada and Manuel and Jose Bunoe of Cudahay, Wisc.; step-grandchildren, Emily Player Stewart and husband Jon of Winston-Salem, N.C., Austin and Carly Player of Lewisville, N.C. and Jamie Player of Sumter; 1 great-grandchild, Grace Stewart of Winston-Salem, N.C.; a special great-nephew, Keith Gainey of Sumter.

Graveside Services with Military Honors will be held 2:00 PM Monday in the Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery with Father Daniel Carboy C.Ss R.officiating.

The family will receive friends from 4 to 6 PM Sunday at the Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home and other times at the home, 2048 Charleston Ave.

Vadie Hopkins Croft, 73, widow of Clifton Croft, died Monday, April 4, 2005 at the Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born in Darlington, she was a daughter of the late Norman Hopkins and the late Ilene Gainey Hopkins.

Mrs. Croft was retired from Campbell Soup Company.

Surviving are a son, Claude “Bo” Croft and wife Anita of Darlington; two daughters, Joann Barwick and husband Robert and Marlene Corbett and husband David of Sumter; four grandchildren, Claude “Dink” Croft, Jr. of St. Augustine, Fla., Deborah Corbett, Phillip Barwick, and Shannon Barwick all of Sumter; one great-grandchild, Carl Croft of St. Augustine, Fla.

She was preceded in death by four brothers and two sisters.

Funeral services will be held at 11 A.M. Wednesday in the Chapel of the Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home with Rev. Larry Hummel officiating.

Burial will be in Grove Hill Cemetery in Darlington, S.C.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 P.M. Tuesday at the Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home and other times at the home of her daughter, 1160 Pinewood Road.

Memorials may be made to a charity of one’s choice.
