Maggie Wharton
GREENWOOD — Maggie Pearl Middleton Wharton, 84, of 102 Cambridge Apartments, widow of Nathaniel “Nate” Wharton, passed away Feb. 12, 2001, at National Health Care of Greenwood.
Born in Abbeville County, she was a daughter of the late Alexander and Maggie Wideman Middleton. She was a member of Mount Zion AME Church, McCormick, where she was a former choir member and stewardess. She was a member of Women’s Aide Society No. 89 and formerly worked with the Green Thumb Program of Greenwood County.
Survivors include a brother, Elijah Middleton of Columbia; two sisters, Mary Devlin of Philadelphia and Mamie White of Albany, N.Y.; two nieces reared in the home, Effie Stewart of Queens, N.Y., and Monique Latimer of Pittsford, N.Y.; two nephews reared in the home, Jesse Middleton and Elijah Middleton Jr., both of Greenwood; two grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
The family is at the home of Joe Ben and Mary Frazier, a niece, 103 Myrtle St., Magnolia Place.
Services will be announced by Robinson and Son Mortuary, which is in charge.

‘Pie’ Bourne
GREENWOOD — Harrison Marion “Pie” Bourne, 72, of Apt. 1, Grace Court, passed away Feb. 14, 2001, at Self Memorial Hospital.
Born in Greenwood County, he was a son of the late Cullen E. Bourne Jr. and Annie Lee Dukes Bourne. He graduated from Greenwood High School, attended Georgia Tech and served in the South Carolina Army National Guard. He was an employee of C.E. Bourne and Co. and a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church.
Survivors include a son, Harrison Whitlock Bourne of the home; a daughter, Tanis B. Lyles of Greenwood; and two grandsons.
Services will be at 2 Saturday at Blyth Funeral Home, with the Rev. Larry Duncan and Pete King officiating. Burial will be in Greenwood Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers are Lawrence Breazeale, Ray Riddle, Clyde Wiggleton, John Jennings, Freddie Kirkland, Howard Cohen, Bill Lloyd, Mike Steadman and Scott Bourne.
Honorary escorts are retired members of the South Carolina Army National Guard, along with Curtis Harris, Eddie Lloyd, Steve Lloyd, Freddie Hahn, Howard Jones, Johnny Cason, Mike Crawford, Townes Jones, Billy Davis and Dr. Stanley Baker.
Visitation is at the funeral home from 6-8 tonight.
The family is at the home.
Memorials may be made to HospiceCare of the Piedmont, 408 W. Alexander Ave., Greenwood, S.C. 29646.

Velma R. Havird
BATESBURG — Velma Rushton Havird, 86, of Route 3, Saluda County, widow of Gardo Z. Havird, passed away Feb. 14, 2001, at Lexington Medical Center.
Born in Saluda County, she was a daughter of the late Mac Dudley and Agnes Myrtle Riley Rushton. She was a homemaker, a farmer and a member of Emory United Methodist Church and the Golden Agers Club of the church.
Survivors include two daughters, Lona H. Swygert and Lois Hare, both of Batesburg; a son, Lodd Z. Havird of Columbia; a sister, Ida Lou Jones of Saluda; 11 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Services will be conducted by the Rev. Boyd Chewning at 3:30 Saturday at Emory United Methodist Church, Saluda. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Visitation is from 6-8 tonight at Ramey Funeral Home.
The family is at the home of a daughter, Lois Hare.
Memorials may be made to Emory United Methodist Church Building Fund, Route 4, Box 543, Saluda, S.C. 29108.

Lindon G. Lynch
GREENWOOD — Lindon Grief “Pete” Lynch, 84, widower of Claudia Bass Lynch, passed away Feb. 16, 2001, at Wesley Commons Health Care Center.
Born in Monticello, Ga., he was a son of the late Edward Clifford and Iola F. Lynch. He was a former employee of Connie Maxwell Children’s Home, where he was in charge of maintenance and was a cottage parent, and of Carolina Tool. He was an Army veteran of World War II and the Korean conflict and a member of Laurel Baptist Church and the Men’s Bible Class.
Survivors include a sister, Mamie Cain of Carrollton, Ga.; a brother, Radford Lynch of Pueblo, Colo.; two grandchildren and a great-granddaughter.
Services will be at 3 Sunday at Laurel Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Billy Huff and the Rev. Booker Bagby. Burial will be in Greenwood Memorial Gardens. The body will be placed in the church at 2.
Pallbearers are Ellis Arnold, Butch Hutchinson, John Sheriff, Richard Hotchkiss, Bobby Wines and Steve Shiflet.
Honorary escorts are the men of the church and Connie Maxwell Children’s Home. Visitation is from 6-8 Saturday at Harley Funeral Home.
The family is at the home of a granddaughter, Leisa Hotchkiss, 208 Greenway Drive, North Fall Acres.
Memorials may be made to Laurel Baptist Church, 330 Sample Road, Greenwood, S.C. 29649 or Connie Maxwell Children’s Home, P.O. Box 1178, Greenwood, S.C. 29648.

James Rufus Rhynes
McCORMICK — James Rufus “Honey” Rhynes, 64, of 25 Sandrock Road, passed away Feb. 14, 2001, at his home.
The family is at the home of a sister, Beatrice Scott, Highway 378, Saluda.
Services will be announced by Butler and Sons Funeral Home, which is in charge.

Austin D. Rodgers
WARRENVILLE — Austin D. Rodgers, 96, widower of Blanche Kirkland Rodgers, passed away Feb. 15, 2001.
Born in Ward, he was a son of the late William Luzone Rodgers and Cassie Watson Rodgers.
Survivors include three daughters, June Ferguson and Hazel Ferguson, both of North Augusta and Pat Baker of Graniteville; nine grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 Saturday at Warrenville First Baptist Church, with burial in Mount Pleasant Baptist Church Cemetery, Ridge Spring.
Visitation is from 7-9 tonight at Napier Funeral Home.
Napier Funeral Home, Graniteville, is in charge.

Etta Mae Smith
WATERLOO — Etta Mae Sellers Smith, 86, of 699 Smith’s Village Road, widow of Roy Smith Sr., passed away Feb. 15, 2001, at her home.
Born in Matthews, Ga., she was a daughter of the late George Franklin and Delia Prickett Sellers. She retired from Greenwood Mills, Mathews Plant, and was a member of Grendel Pentecostal Holiness Church.
Survivors include two daughters, Maude Bell of Verdery and Diane Smith of Matthews, Ga.; five sons, Roy Smith Jr. of Cokesbury, Vernon F. Smith of Waterloo, John H. Smith and George Smith, both of Hodges and Don Smith of Greenwood; two sisters, Pearlie Loren of Waynesboro, Ga., and Mary Ricketson of Augusta, Ga.; 16 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren.
Services will be conducted by the Rev. Paul Burden and the Rev. Buddy Tollison at 11 a.m. Saturday at Blyth Funeral Home. Burial will be at 3 Saturday in Mount Moriah Camp Ground Cemetery, Matthews, Ga.
Pallbearers are Frankie Sprouse, Johnny Sprouse, George Smith Jr., Tony Smith, Mickey Smith, John Smith Jr., Donnie Smith, Brian Smith, Ellis Smith, Vernon Smith and Jamie Smith.
Honorary escorts are great-grandchildren.
Visitation is at the funeral home from 7-8:30 tonight.
The family is at the home of a son, Roy Smith Jr., 313 Asbury Road, Cokesbury.

Ellen Stuck
WARE SHOALS — Ellen Louise Koon Stuck, 90, of 17387 Highway 25, widow of Edward Stuck, passed away Feb. 15, 2001, at National Health Care in Laurens.
Born in Newberry County, she was a daughter of the late Julius and Lula Hipp Koon. She was a member of St. Johns Lutheran Church in Pomaria.
Survivors include two sons, Charles R. Stuck of Newberry and Edward Hayne Stuck of Chesapeake, Va.; a daughter, Carolinda “Lindy” Wood of Ware Shoals; two brothers, Dempsey Ray Koon of Tennessee and Jack Koon of Prosperity; two sisters, Margaret Ebert of Bethel Park, Pa., and Julia Robbs of Gaffney; seven grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
Services will be conducted by the Rev. Michael Bingham at 11 a.m. Saturday at Parker-White Funeral Home. Burial will be at 3 in St. Johns Lutheran Church Cemetery, Pomaria.
Visitation is from 7-9 tonight and 10-11 Saturday at the funeral home.
Parker-White Funeral Home is in charge.

Claude Wakefield
McCORMICK — Claude Wakefield, 47, of Westowne Apartments, J-3, husband of Josie Johnson Wakefield, passed away Feb. 15, 2001.
A son of the late Myrtis Williams and Samuel Wakefield, he was educated in McCormick public schools and was a member of Bethany Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife of the home; a son, Terrance Wakefield, and a daughter, Juwona Wakefield, both of Plum Branch; a stepdaughter, Cynthia Price of McCormick; a stepson, William Johnson of Atlanta; five sisters, Nellie Anderson, Margaret Rucker, Brenda Starks, Rosetta Williams and Patricia Williams, all of McCormick; and six brothers, Herbert Wakefield of Morristown, N.J., Samuel Wakefield of Avon Park, Fla., Everett Wakefield of Edgefield and Thomas Drennon, Wilbur Wakefield and Donald Williams, all of McCormick.
Visitation is at the home.
Services will be announced by McCormick Memorial Chapel, which is in charge.

Roosevelt Aiken Sr.
ABBEVILLE — Roosevelt Aiken Sr., 88, widower of Francine Mayes Aiken, passed away Feb. 18, 2001, at the Heardmont Nursing Home in Elberton, Ga.
Born in Abbeville County, he was a son of the late Walter and Willie Anderson Aiken. He attended Mount Zion AME Church, Donalds, and was a retired employee of Abbeville County Memorial Hospital.
Survivors include two sons, Roosevelt Aiken Jr. of Abbeville and James Aiken of Greenville; three daughters, Margaret Williams and Carolyn Gray, both of Abbeville and Winter Elaine Quiller of Greenville; a sister, Mamie Aiken of New York City; seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
The family is at the home of Mrs. Margaret Williams, 104 Miller St.
Services will be announced by Brown and Walker Funeral Home, which is in charge.

Charlie ‘Shack’ Barr Jr.
NINETY SIX — Charlie “Shack” Barr Jr., 57, of 213 Little Mountain Road, husband of Helen Conway Barr, passed away Feb. 17, 2001, at Self Memorial Hospital in Greenwood.
Born in Newberry County, he was a son of the late Charlie and Jessie Andrews Barr. He was a member and trustee of Friendship Baptist Church and an employee of Richtex Brick Co.
Survivors include his wife of the home; a daughter, Shirley Barr Moore of Ninety Six; four sons, Barry Jackson of Columbus, Ga., Lee Barr and Jerome Barr, both of Ninety Six and Charles Barr of Bishopville; six grandchildren; and two sisters, Daisy Barr of Newberry and Frances Quarles of Ninety Six.
The family is at the home.
Services will be announced by Daniel and Sons Funeral Home, which is in charge.

John C. ‘Neeg’ Calhoun Sr.
STATESVILLE, N.C. — Elder John C. “Neeg” Calhoun Sr., 70, of 318 Berry St., husband of Ranella Heard Calhoun, passed away Feb. 17, 2001, at Aredella Memorial Hospital in Statesville.
Born in Calhoun Falls, S.C., he was a son of the late Elijah and Hattie Davis Calhoun. He was a retired government employee in Washington , D.C., and a self-employed painter. He was a member of the Rapture Preparation Church of the Lord Jesus Christ in Statesville.
Survivors include his wife of the home; two daughters, Rebecca Calhoun of Statesville and Dianne Calhoun of Washington , D.C.; two sons, John C. Calhoun Jr. and Mitchell Calhoun, both of Statesville; two brothers, William A. Calhoun of Michellville, Md., and David Calhoun of Greenwood, S.C.; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Services will be announced by Rutledge and Bingham Funeral Home, Statesville, which is in charge.

Nathaniel ‘Bud’ Childs
GREENWOOD — Nathaniel Childs, 75, of 111 Oakland St., widow of Annie Bell Parks Childs, passed away Feb. 18, 2001, at his home.
Born in Greenwood County, he was a son of the late Key and Lessie Richardson Childs. He was a member of Jacob Chapel Baptist Church.
Surviving are three sons, Jeffrey R. Childs of Mauldin, Seyvelle Parks of Greenwood and Wilbur Parks of Lorton, Va.; a daughter, Sandra C. Green of Anderson; three brothers, Charles, John and Tommy Childs of Greenwood; a sister, Marie Jefferson of Colorado Springs, Colo.; and 11 grandchildren.
The family is at the home.
Services will be announced by Percival-Tompkins Funeral Home, which is in charge.

Jerry Wayne Clardy
LAURENS — Jerry Wayne Clardy, 53, of 864 Fleming St. Extension, passed away Feb. 17, 2001, at his home.
Born in Greenville, he was a son of the late Woodrow W. and Lowey Hamby Clardy. He was a disabled Marine Corps veteran and a member of the VFW.
Survivors include three sons, Jerry Wayne Clardy Jr. and Kevin Clardy, both of Greenville and Jeremy Clardy of the home; two daughters, Heather Clardy of Cross Hill and Angie Clardy of Branwell; two sisters, Joicy Davis of Greenville and Ruth Clardy of Pickens; and two grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 today at Forest Lawn Cemetery Mausoleum, with full military rites.
Kennedy Mortuary is in charge.
