Bobbie Jean Mathis

GREENWOOD — Bobbie Jean “B.J.” Mathis, 66, of 108 Posey St., husband of Fannie Mae Carroll Mathis, passed away Jan. 11, 2001, at Self Memorial Hospital.
Born in Greenwood County, he was a son of the late Leslie Deal and Viola Mathis Deal. He graduated from Brewer High School in 1951, attended Bethune-Cookman College and received an associate degree in criminal justice from Piedmont Technical College. He was a retired Army sergeant major and a member of Old Field Bethel AME Church, where he served on the steward board.
Survivors include his wife of the home; three daughters, Monique Mathis of Columbia, Melissa Mathis of Florence and Mary Catherine Cunningham of Greenwood; a brother, Leslie Deal of Philadelphia; and four grandchildren.
The family is at the home.
Services will be announced by Robinson and Son Mortuary Inc., which is in charge.

Andy Moseley

NINETY SIX — Andy Moseley, 81, of Route 1, Fruit Hill Road, husband of Nina Mae Jester Moseley, passed away Jan. 9, 2001, at his home.
Born in Chesnee, he was a son of the late Andy Moseley Sr. and Carol Scroggs Moseley. He was a retired employee of Abney Mills, Grendel Plant, and a World War II Army veteran, serving in the Third Army with Gen. Patton during the D-Day invasion. He was a member of Grassy Fork Holiness Church. He was twice married, first to the late Anne Waldren Moseley.
Survivors include his wife of the home; a daughter, Violet M. Gresham of Chicago; a son, Ronald Moseley of Greenwood; a sister, Jeannette Werts of Greenwood; a brother, Dennis Moseley of Saluda; four grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Friday in Greenwood Memorial Gardens.
Visitation is from 7-9 tonight at Harley Funeral Home.
The family is at the home.

Frank E. Addy Sr.

SALUDA — Frank Etheredge Addy Sr., 80, of 109 Neal St., husband of Mary Irick Addy, passed away Jan. 10, 2001, at his home.
Born in Saluda County, he was a son of the late Samuel Roland Elwell and Willie Lee Etheredge Addy and was reared by Mrs. Lois C. Addy. A graduate of Newberry College he was a banker for 37 years and a World War II Navy veteran and served in the National Guard. He was a member of Saluda Lions Club, the National Guard Association and Mount Pleasant Lutheran Church. He was a 50-year member of the American Legion, Saluda Post No. 0065, an organizer and first president of the Saluda Jaycees and a 37-year member of the S.C. Bankers Association. He served on the S.C. State Board of Education and the S.C. State Development Board.
Survivors include his wife of the home; a daughter, Mary Addy Ellis of Columbia; two sons, Frank E. Addy Jr. and Robert Christian Addy, both of Saluda; his stepmother, Lois C. Addy of Saluda; a sister, Dorothy A. Grigsby of Saluda; five grandchildren and a step-grandson.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Mount Pleasant Lutheran Church, with the Rev. George Moore, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Travis Park Cemetery.
Pallbearers are Edwin Riley, Rusty Yarbrough, Eddie Irick, Thomas Sample, Samuel Stevens, Michael Stevens and Lee Pryor.
Honorary escorts are W.M. Cromley Jr., Jack Griffith Jr., Paul DeLoache, W.M. Gentry Sr., Kester Trotter, Dr. R.C. Rollings, Dr. O.L. Felkel, Dr. Allen C. Wise and Tim Taylor.
Visitation is from 6-8 tonight at Ramey Funeral Home.

Elise M. Dickert

NEWBERRY — Elise M. Dominick Dickert, 91, widow of Yancy Thomas Dickert, passed away Jan. 10, 2001.
Born in Chappells, she was a daughter of the late Snowden Elliott and Minnie Beatrice Epting Dominick. A member of Central United Methodist Church, she was a choir member for 30 years, a member, former president and pianist with the Lucy Epps Bible Class, and a member of Circle No. 4. She was also a member of the Marion Davis Mothers Club and the Floral Garden Club, and a partner in her husband’s business, the Farmer’s Hatchery.
Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Ralph (Harriett) Smith of Winston-Salem, N.C., and Mrs. Gordon (Mary Louise) Smith of Freehold, N.J.; four stepsons, Yancy Jackson Dickert of Midland, Mich., and Dan Dickert, William Dickert and Roland Dickert, all of Newberry; a brother, Guy Dominick of Greenwood; and 18 grandchildren.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Central United Methodist Church, with burial in Rosemont Cemetery.
Visitation is from 7-9 tonight at McSwain-Evans Funeral Home.

Beatrice Gurley

ANDERSON — Mattie Beatrice Simpson Gurley, 85, of 401 Hughes St., widow of Thomas T. Gurley, passed away Jan. 10, 2001, at Anderson Area Medical Center.
Born in LaFrance, she was a daughter of the late Daniel and Amanda Bramlett Simpson. She was a charter member of Emmanuel Baptist Church, Antreville, and a retired employee of Southern Weaving.
Survivors include three daughters, Betty Joyce Gurley of the home, Helen Timmerman of Abbeville and Gail McGowan of Anderson; 13 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Emmanuel Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Ray Hansel. The body will be placed in the church at 10. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Visitation is from 6:30-8 tonight at McDougald Funeral Home.
The family is at the home of Tom and Angie Kelley, 208 Brittany Park, Anderson.
Memorials may be made to Emmanuel Baptist Church, Highway 28 North, Abbeville, S.C. 29620.

Gerald Kesler

NINETY SIX — Gerald Hayes Kesler, 68, of 304 Marvin Road, husband of Addie Cromer Kesler, passed away Jan. 10, 2001, at University Hospital in Augusta.
Born in Newberry County, he was an Army veteran of the Korean War and former owner and operator of Kesler Construction Co.
Survivors include his wife of the home; a son, Steve Kesler of Ninety Six; two daughters, Judith K. Mutter of Ninety Six and Debbie Werts of Prosperity; and three grandchildren.
Private funeral services were conducted this morning.
Memorials may be made to The American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 1741, Greenwood, S.C. 29648.

Bobbie Jean Mathis

GREENWOOD — Services for Bobbie Jean “B.J.” Mathis, of 108 Posey St., will be at 2:30 Sunday at Old Field Bethel AME Church, conducted by the Rev. Paul Wharton, pastor, assisted by the Rev. W.B. Williams and the Rev. Willie S. Harrison. Burial, with full military rites, will be in the church cemetery. The body will be placed in the church at 1:30.
Army Honor Guard members are pallbearers.
Flower bearers are missionaries of the church.
Honorary escorts are officers of the church and members of Brewer High School Class of 1951.
Visitation is Saturday night at the home.
Robinson and Son Mortuary Inc. is in charge.

Benjamin Franklin Murphy

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. — Benjamin Franklin Murphy, 79, formerly of Greenwood, husband of Mildred Murphy, passed away Jan. 10, 2001.
Born in Greenwood County, he was a son of the late George F. and Alice Elane Widner Murphy. He retired from General Motors in Kansas City, Kan. He was first married to the late Frances Gertrude Bond Murphy.
Survivors include his wife of the home; a daughter, Alice Ann Murphy Stewart of Greenwood; a brother, Warren “W.J.” Murphy of Hodges, S.C.; grandchildren, great-grandchildren and step-grandchildren.
Burial at sea was Thursday.
All County Mortuary Service, Fort Pierce, was in charge.

Pearl Batson

WARE SHOALS — Pearl Jackson Batson, 84, of Jackson Road, widow of Woodrow W. Batson, passed away Jan. 12, 2001, at the home of her son.
A daughter of the late O.K. and Betty Lollis Jackson, she was a member of Poplar Springs Baptist Church and a retired employee of Riegel Textile Corp.
Survivors include a son, Larry Batson of Ware Shoals; a sister, Audrey Weaver of Greenville; four grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 3 Sunday at Poplar Springs Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Todd Horton. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Pallbearers are Keith Batson, David Batson, Don Batson, Brian Batson, Nicholas Batson and Don Watson.
Visitation is from 2-3 Sunday at the church.
The family is at 431 Jackson Road.

Mable Butler Simmons

SALUDA — Mable Butler Ward Simmons, 77, of Route 6, Box 840, wife of Bob Simmons Jr., passed away Jan. 10, 2001, at Edgefield County Hospital.
Born in Saluda County, she was a daughter of the late Walter and Lucille Jackson Butler. A retired employee of Saluda Nursing Center, she was a member of St. Paul Baptist Church, where she was a missionary, an usher and a singer in the St. Paul Gospel Choir. She was also a member of the Women’s Aide Society and the Satterwhite-Brown Order of the Eastern Star.
Survivors include her husband of the home; five sons, James Ward Jr. of Sandusky, Ohio, Auguster Ward and Larry Ward, both of Waterbury, Conn., Bobby Simmons of Washington , D.C., and Jerry Simmons of Saluda; two daughters, Mary S. Suber of Aiken and Deloris Williams of Saluda; a brother, Charles H. Butler of Ridgeway; four sisters, Dillie B. Sheppard of Newberry, Popie B. Williams of Oak Park, Mich., and Bessie B. Weaver and Albertha B. Gallman, both of Waterbury; 18 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 Sunday at St. Paul Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Bobby Derrick. Burial will be in Crossroad AME Church Cemetery.
Pallbearers are members of Pearl Chapel Masonic Lodge No. 26.
Flower bearers are members of the Satterwhite-Brown Order of the Eastern Star.
A wake service will be from 6-8 tonight at Butler and Sons Funeral Home.
At other times, the family will receive friends at the home.

Nancy Biedenbender

GREENWOOD — Nancy Jean Rineheart Biedenbender, 64, of 306 Grove St., Hampton House, widow of George Biedenbender, passed away Jan. 12, 2001, at her home.
Born in Wisconsin, she was a daughter of the late Everett and Hazel Davoak Rineheart. She was a homemaker and a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church.
Survivors include three sons, Jeff Biedenbender of Greenwood, George Biedenbender of Virginia and Douglas Biedenbender of Champaign, Ill.; a daughter, Susie Biedenbender of Winston-Salem, N.C.; two brothers, Dennis Rineheart of N.J. and Donald Rineheart of Wisconsin; a sister, Linda Koboske of Wis.; eight grandchildren and a great-grandchild.
Memorial services will be at 11 Monday at Blyth Funeral Home Chapel, conducted by Father Richard Harris.
The family is at the home of her son, Jeff Biedenbender, 116 Nottingham Lane, Greenwood.
Memorials may be made to Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, 110 E. Laurel Ave., Greenwood, S.C. 29649.

Louise Vaughn Curry

AIKEN — Louise “Bert” Vaughn Curry, 56, of 1438 Redd St., passed away Jan. 12, 2001, at Aiken Regional Medical Center.
Survivors include her husband, James Curry; a son, Michael Vaughn of Aiken; four sisters, Lorrine Sanders of Aiken, Carolyn Lomax, LaVern Jones and Gloria Davis, all of Greenwood; five brothers, James Vaughn of Aiken, Joseph Vaughn Jr. of Philadelphia, Pa., Marvin Vaughn and Charles Vaughn, both of Greenwood and Ronald Vaughn of Ware Shoals.
Services will be at 2 Tuesday at Mt. Anna Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Alfred Holmes.
Friends may call the residence.
