‘Dell’ Young

PEACHTREE CITY, Ga. — Robert Blondel “Dell” Young, 50, passed away Jan. 7, 2001, in Georgia.
Born in Greenwood, S.C., he was a son of Jimmy W. Young and the late Caroline Johnson Young. He was a former employee of Holiday Inn in Greenwood and a member of South Main Street Baptist Church.
Survivors include his father and step-mother, Thelma Young, of Greenwood; a sister, Jimmie Ann Davis of Peachtree City; two stepsisters, Mrs. Ronnie (Nancy) O’Dell of Ware Shoals, S.C., and Mrs. Paul B. (Becky) Pritchard of Mt. Pleasant, S.C.
Services will be at 2 Wednesday at Blyth Funeral Home, with the Rev. Dave Patterson and the Rev. Ryan Eklund officiating. Burial will be in Greenwood Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers are Gene Pinson, Jimmy Sligh, Jimmy Mathis, Michael Davis, Randy Free and Gerald Willis.
Visitation is from 1-2 Wednesday at the funeral home.
The family is at the home of Jimmy and Thelma Young, 204 Heritage West, Greenwood.
Memorials may be made to a charity of one’s choice.

Charles Holloway
GREENWOOD — Charles Holloway, of 113 Joel Ave., passed away June 29, 2001, at Self Memorial Hospital.
The family is at the home, 113 Joel Ave. and at the home of his daughter, 709 Macedonia Ave.
Services will be announced by Parks Funeral Home, which is in charge.

Hassie Louise Nicholson
MCCORMICK — Hassie Louise Nicholson, 54, of 308 Wall Road, widow of Wayne Nicholson, passed away June 29, 2001, at her home.
Born in McCormick, she was a daughter of the late William Whaling and Nora Lee Ferquron Carroll.
Survivors include her son, Richard Elgin of McCormick; two sisters, Lillian Gable of McCormick and Janie Barton of Waterloo; and two brothers, James and Whaling Carroll, both of McCormick.
Services will be at 2 Monday at the Harley Funeral Home Chapel, conducted by Rev. Richard McWhite. Burial will be in Overbrook Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Floyd Carroll, Ben Jennings, Dale Jennings, Avery Green, Larry Jennings and Bobby Jennings.
Visitation is from 7-9 tonight at the funeral home.
The family is at the home of Catherine Turner, Rt. 1 Hwy. 28 South.

Lucy Shiflet
NINETY SIX — Lucy Holbrook Shiflet, resident of The Old Homeplace and former resident of Kate Fowler Road, widow of John Coleman Shiflet, passed away June 30, 2001, at Self Memorial Hospital.
Born in Hart County, Ga., she was a daughter of the late T.P. and Julia Williford Holbrook. She was a graduate of Hart County High School and a member of First Baptist Church, Ninety Six. She was also a former Sunday School teacher and a member of the TEL Sunday School class.
Survivors include two daughters, Eleanor S. Teal of Greenwood and Barbara S. Hall of Elberton, Ga.; a son, John C. Shiflet Jr. of McCormick; a sister, Sara Hubbard of Hartwell, Ga.; seven grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 Monday at First Baptist Church, conducted by the Revs. Robin Fisher and Steve Justice. Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery. The body will be placed in the church at 1 Monday.
Visitation is from 7-9 tonight at Blyth Funeral Home.
The family is at the home of Dixon and Eleanor Teal, 309 Gentry Run, Hunter’s Creek, Greenwood.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First Baptist Church, P.O. Box 85. Ninety Six, S.C. 29666 or to The Old Homeplace Retirement Center, 711 Scotch Cross Road E. Greenwood, SC 29646.

Peggy Walker
GREENWOOD — Peggy Walker, 57, of 420 Sagewood Dr., wife of Wayne Walker, passed away June 29, 2001.
Born in Hodges, she was a daughter of Sarah Inez Young Davis and the late Zachery Vernon Davis. She was formerly employed by Office Supply Center and was a member of Providence Baptist Church.
Survivors include her husband of the home; mother of Hodges; a daughter, Susan Walker Sullivan of Ware Shoals; two sisters, Sarah Lee D. McJunkin and Patricia “Pat” Spoone, both of Hodges; and a grandchild.
Services will be at 11 Monday at Providence Baptist Church, conducted by the Revs. Lamar Babb and J.B. Redd. Burial will be in Oakbrook Memorial Park Chapel Mausoleum.
Pallbearers will be William Vaughn, Calvin Shirley, Phillip Hodges, George Smith, Travis Spoone, Griff Dorroh, Frank “Buddy” Shirley and the Rev. John Walsh.
Honorary escorts will be the Deacons and the Men of Providence Baptist Church and the Employees of Office Supply Center.
Visitation is from 7-9 tonight at Harley Funeral Home.
The family is at the home of her mother, 122 Robertson St., Hodges.
Memorials may be made to Hospice of the Piedmont.

Dick Abney, 80, business and community leader
GREENWOOD — Joel Richard “Dick” Abney Jr., 80, a retired business, community and civic club leader, passed away July 8, 2001, at Self Memorial Hospital.
A resident of 505 Lodge Drive with wife Carolyn “Peaches” Clements Abney, he had been in declining health for an extended period.
Born in Greenwood, he was a son of the late Joel R. Sr. and Julia Cade Abney. He was a graduate of Greenwood High School and was an Eagle Scout. He attended The Citadel and was a 1941 graduate of Auburn University, where he was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity.
A veteran of World War II, he served in the Navy from 1942 to 1945 as a lieutenant and captained the LCI 867 in the Pacific Fleet.
His career in business led his family to residences in Anderson, Albertville, Ala., and Charlotte. He returned home to Greenwood in 1971 where he established and operated the Greenwood Swimming Pool and Supply Co. until retirement in 1985.
He served on the Commissioners of Public Works, the Greenwood Planning Board and as chairman of the Alcohol and Drug Abuse Commission. He was a past president of the Greenwood Rotary Club and a Paul Harris Fellow.
Survivors include his wife; four sons, Richard Abney of Myrtle Beach, Ben Abney of Atlanta, David Abney of Duluth, Ga., and Sid Abney of Greenville; a daughter, Melinda Whitton of Louisville, Ky.; and 12 grandchildren.
Services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Blyth Funeral Home by the Rev. Benjamin Cade Abney. Burial is in Edgewood Cemetery.
Pallbearers are Ken Fish, Larry Hehl, John McElrath, Lang Foster, Jim Bailey, Terry Adkins and Bill Hughes.
Honorary escorts are his caregivers, along with Bill Tinsley, William Harrison, Jimmy Wade, Gordon Bails, Bill Squires, John Bracknell, Bill Allin, Bill Coleman, Henry McKinney, Howard Parker, George Ballentine, Harold Johnson, Roy Owen, Harry Stevens, Earl Cowan, Dr. Jack Scurry, Dr. John Harrison, Henry Thayer, Frank Reynolds, Mary Griffin, Mary Harrison, Joe Ferry and Marvin Boatwright.
Visitation is from 10-11 Wednesday at the funeral home. The family is at the home.

Edna Beasley
DONALDS — Edna Mae Adams Beasley, 76, of 1582 Willie Kay Road, widow of James Ray Beasley, passed away July 9, 2001, at her home.
Born in Anderson County, she was a daughter of the late Preston Ban and Bertha McClain Adams. She retired from Honea Path Shirtmakers and was a member of Donalds Baptist Church.
Survivors include three sons, Jimmy Ray Beasley of Donalds, Daniel Beasley of Greenville and Joey Beasley of Chester; four daughters, Joyce Brock of Starr, Jackie Caldwell of Honea Path and Becky Ferguson and Wanda Elliott, both of Abbeville; four brothers, Archie Adams of Cheddar, Leo Adams of Belton, Charles Adams of Ware Shoals and Marvin Adams of Shoals Junction; 16 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.
Services will be conducted at 11 Wednesday at Donalds Baptist Church by the Rev. Jerry Hill. Burial is in Donalds Cemetery. The body will be placed in the church at 10.
Visitation is from 6-9 tonight at Pruitt Funeral Home, Honea Path.
The family is at the home of a daughter, Jackie Caldwell, 201 Brock Circle, Honea Path.

Patricia Mitchell Goodman
GREENWOOD — Patricia Ann Mitchell Goodman, 41, of 406 Ron McNair Drive, passed away July 9, 2001, at Providence Hospital in Columbia.
Born in Plattsburg, N.Y., she was a daughter of Charles and Beatrice Booker Mitchell. A member of Flint Hill Baptist Church and a 1978 graduate of Greenwood High School, she attended Lander College and was a caregiver in the home.
Survivors include her parents of the home; a daughter, Tiffany Goodman of the home; a brother, Charles W. Mitchell of Nashville, Tenn.; and three sisters, Sandra Allen and Elaine Evans, both of Greenwood and Brenda Norman of Greensboro, N.C.
The family is at the home.
Services will be announced by Percival-Tompkins Funeral Home, which is in charge.

Rosia Nell Ruff Graham
GREENWOOD — Services for Rosia Nell Ruff Graham will be at 2 Wednesday at Pine Pleasant Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Ernest Cannon, assisted by the Revs. Dora Ann White and Bernard White. Burial is in the church cemetery. The body will be placed in the church at 1.
Pallbearers are deacons and trustees of the church.
Flower bearers are members of the senior choir and Women’s Aide Society No. 12.
Visitation is tonight at the home of her daughter, Brenda D. Graham Wright, Lexington II Apartments, H-7, Greenwood.
Robinson & Son Mortuary Inc. is in charge.

Jennie Kay
GREENWOOD — Jennie Tinkler Kay, 89, of 105 Hill & Dale Drive, widow of Fred Kay Jr., passed away July 10, 2001, at Self Memorial Hospital.
The family is at the home of a daughter, Joyce Bartless, 304 Plantation Drive, where visitation will be from 7-9 Wednesday.
Services will be announced by Harley Funeral Home, which is in charge.

ABBEVILLE — Services for Earl Belcher Jr. will be conducted at 1 Thursday at Rockford A.M.E. Church by the Revs. James Louden III and Clinton J. Hall II. Burial is in the church cemetery. The body will be placed in the church at noon.
Pallbearers are nephews and cousins.
Flower bearers are nieces and cousins.
The family is at the home of his mother, Alberta McHerrin Belcher, 8 Dogwood Lane. Brown and Walker Funeral Home is in charge.

Jessie Mae Brown
CALHOUN FALLS — Jessie Mae Kidd Brown, 89, of 177 Mud Creek Road, widow of Hurbert Emory Brown, passed away July 10, 2001, at Eden Gardens Care Center, Anderson.
Born in Madison County, Ga., she was a daughter of the late Henry Dawson and Mamie Moon Kidd. She was a homemaker and a member of Calhoun Falls Senior Citizens Club, Calhoun Falls Pentecostal Holiness Church and the Women’s Ministries of the church.
Survivors include a son, Larry Brown of Calhoun Falls; a daughter, Byrdie Lee Boggs of Anderson, seven grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren.
Services are at 11 a.m. Friday at Calhoun Falls Pentecostal Holiness Church, conducted by the Revs. Lawrence Johnson, Eric Boggs and Virgil Manning. Burial is in Forest Lawn Memory Gardens, Abbeville.
Pallbearers are Ken Boggs, Dale Boggs, Ron Boggs, Anthony Holtzclaw, Jonathan Boggs, Wesley Boggs, Carey Holtzclaw and Mike McNamara.
Visitation is from 7-9 Thursday at Calhoun Falls Funeral Home.

Mary Dukes
GREENWOOD — Mary Werts Dukes, 94, formerly of 205 Ware Street, widow of Franklin Claude Dukes, passed away July 10, 2001, at Wesley Commons.
Born in Newberry County, she was a daughter of the late Thomas Middleton and Minnie King Werts. She was a former employee with Eastwell Sportswear, and she was a member of Lowell Street United Methodist Church.
She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Survivors include nieces and nephews.
Cryptside services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday at Edgewood Memorial Mausoleum by the Rev. Robert L. Allen.
Visitation is after the service.
Memorials may be made to Lowell Street United Methodist Church, 300 Lowell Ave., Greenwood, S.C. 29646 or to a charity of one’s choice.
