Betty Ammons
HARTWELL, GA. - Betty Ross Wilson Ammons, 82, resident of 54 Glenn St., and former resident of Greenwood, SC, widow of John Melvin Ammons, passed away July 5, 2001 at Atria Assisted Living.
Born in Greenwood County, SC August 19, 1918, she was a daughter of the late William David and Beulah Ross Wilson. She was a graduate of Greenwood High School and attended Lander College. Mrs. Ammons was a private piano teacher.
A member of the First Baptist Church of Hartwell, she was a former member of Bethel United Methodist Church in Callison.
Formerly of Greenwood, she had made her home in Hartwell since 1989.
Surviving are two daughters, Judith Ammons ÒJudyÓ Cockrell of Greenwood, and Betty Jean Ammons Edwards of Hartwell, GA; four grandchildren, Mike Edwards of Gaston, SC; Joe Edwards of Plant City, FL; David Cockrell of Jacksonville, FL; and Wendi C. Mitchell of Anderson, SC; four great-grandchildren Jonathan Edwards of Gaston, SC; Tori Cockrell and Erin Cockrell, both of Jacksonville, FL; and Caleb Mitchell of Anderson, SC.
Funeral services will be conducted 2PM Saturday from the Blyth Funeral Home Chapel in Greenwood with Dr. Earl Wilson, Rev. Richard McWhite and Rev. Ryan Eklund officiating.
Burial will be in Greenwood Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers will be Mike Edwards, Joe Edwards, David Cockrell, Jason Mitchell, Charlie Luquire, Ed Eakin and Don Brunson.
The family is at the home of Judy Cockrell, 208 Curl Creek Rd. in Greenwood and will receive friends at the funeral home from 7 to 9 Friday evening.
Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church of Hartwell, East Howell St., Hartwell, GA 30643 or to the Rehoboth/Bethel United Methodist Church Charge, 1808 Callison Hwy., Greenwood, SC 29646 or to South Main Street Baptist Church, Building Fund, 1000 South Main St., Greenwood, SC 29646.

Wilbur Attaway
GREENWOOD — Wilbur Harrigal Attaway, 79, of 109 Gantt Road, husband of Beulah Mabry Attaway, passed away July 5, 2001, at National Healthcare of Greenwood.
Visitation is from 2:30-3:30 Sunday at Blyth Funeral Home.
Services will be announced by Blyth Funeral Home, which is in charge.

Eugene ‘Shag’ Backus
NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Eugene “Shag” Backus, 77, of 1750 24th Ave. N., husband of Cora Backus, passed away July 4, 2001, at Veterans Hospital in Nashville. Born in Greenwood, S.C., he was a son of the late Jim and Ida Marshall Backus. A member of Tabernacle Baptist Church, he was a graduate of Brewer High School and a World War II Navy veteran, serving from 1943-45 and honorably discharged from the USS New Jersey. After his discharge, he owned and operated a barbershop on Waller Avenue for many years and was also a brick mason. He later moved to Nashville, and he continued to work in brick masonry until his retirement. Survivors include his wife of the home; two daughters, Gloria B. Phillips of Cokesbury and Marietta B. Mars of Greenwood; a son, Eugene Backus Jr. of Greenwood; two stepsons, Ricky Backus and Larry Backus, both of Greenwood; a stepdaughter, Diana Backus of Greenwood; two sisters, Dr. Elizabeth Backus of Nashville and Ethel B. Miller of Greenwood; and seven grandchildren. Services are at 11 a.m. Monday at Smith Brothers Funeral Home, Monroe Street, with the Rev. DeQuincy M. Hentz officiating and the Rev. Furman M. Miller Jr. presiding. Burial is in the United States Military Veterans Cemetery, Nashville. Family members are at their respective homes. Smith Brothers Funeral Home is in charge.

Bradley Coleman
CALHOUN FALLS — Bradley “Shoat” Coleman, 89, of 113 Bush St., widower of Lenora Dubose Coleman, passed away July 5, 2001, at his home.
Born in Mount Carmel, he was a son of the late Robert Willie and Betty Foster Coleman. He was a retired pulpwood worker and a member of McAllister Chapel Church, Mount Carmel.
Survivors include two daughters, Annie Bell Heed of the home and Estella Ware of Calhoun Falls; 15 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.
Services will be announced by Friendly Funeral Home, which is in charge.

Aggie T. Elmore
ABBEVILLE — Services for Aggie T. Elmore, of 709 Cambridge St., will be conducted at 1 Saturday at Brown and Walker Funeral Home by the Revs. Rufus East and Chester Miller. Burial is in Forest Lawn Memory Gardens.
Pallbearers are nephews and family friends.
Flower bearers are nieces.
The family is at the home of a sister, Emma Connor, 1103 Cambridge St.
Brown and Walker Funeral Home is in charge.

Michael Anthony Griffin
GREENWOOD — Services for Michael Anthony Griffin, of 428 Byrd St., will be at 2 Sunday at Bethel Missionary Baptist Church, Cross Hill, conducted by the Rev. Emanuel Spearman. Burial is in Greenwood Memorial Gardens. The body will be placed in the church at 1.
Pallbearers are Reginald Speach, Michael Speach, Garrett Speach, Daniel Drennon, Tony Williams and Dexter Chambers.
Flower bearers are Joanne Calliham, Sheryl Austin, Beatrice Calliham, Sharon Johnson, Mary Ann Williams and Noria Baker.
Visitation is Saturday evening is at the home and at the home of his mother, Rosa Lee White Griffin, 105 N. Ames St.
Robinson & Son Mortuary Inc. is in charge.

Barron D. Kennedy Jr.
DUE WEST — Barron Devane Kennedy Jr., 82, of Due West Retirement Center, husband of Gladys Plowden Kennedy, passed away July 6, 2001, at Carlisle Nursing Center.
Services will be announced by Harris Funeral Home, Abbeville, which is in charge.

Moffatt Long, outstanding Erskine alum, dies at 82
GREENVILLE — Moffatt Grier Long, 82, a leading student athlete and active alumni of Erskine College, passed away July 4, 2001, at St. Francis Hospital.
He lived at 121 Wren Way and was the husband of Lila Williams Long. Born in Due West, he was a son of the late Dr. Edgar Long and Agnes Grier Long. He was a 1940 graduate of Erskine College, where he lettered in football, basketball, baseball and tennis, and where he was elected to the Erskine Athletic Hall of Fame in 1983. He was a member of the Erskine Alumni Board, past chairman of the Erskine Board of Counselors and past president of Erskine Alumni Association. He received the Distinguished Alumni Service Award in 1979 and the Algernon Sydney Sullivan Award in 1991.
He also was a prominent businessman, a decorated hero of World War II, and church leader.
Honored by the Equitable Life Assurance Society in 1991 for 50 years of service, he was elected to the Equitable Hall of Fame in 1979 and was a life and qualifying member of the Million Dollar Round Table, past president of the Greenville Association of Underwriters and recipient of 34 National Quality Awards from the National Association of Underwriters.
Long was a member and elder at Greenville Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church, where he taught Sunday School for 42 years. He was a World War II Army veteran, serving with General Patton’s Second Armored Division and receiving the Bronze Star Medal, Presidential Citation, Belgian Fouraguerre, Distinguished Unit Citation, Combat Infantryman’s Badge and six Campaign Stars (African, Sicilian and European).
Survivors include his wife; two sons, Moffatt Grier Long Jr. of Greenville and Dr. James Edgar Long of Auburn, Ala.; a daughter, Landy Long of Greenville; a brother, Hazel H. Long of Atlanta; and three grandchildren.
Services are at 11 a.m. Saturday at Greenville A.R.P. Church, with burial in Woodlawn Memorial Park. Burial services will be in the Remembrance Chapel.
Visitation is from 10-10:50 a.m. Saturday at the church. The family is at the home.
Memorials may be made to Greenville A.R.P. Church, 741 Cleveland St., Greenville, S.C. 29601 or Erskine College, Due West, S.C. 29639.

Carroll McIntosh Sr.
AIKEN — Carroll “Shorty” McIntosh Sr., 71, widower of Elizabeth “Red” McIntosh, passed away July 5, 2001, at the VA Medical Center in Augusta.
Born in Greenwood, S.C., he had lived in Aiken since 1968. He was an Air Force veteran and retired from the South Carolina National Guard as a master sergeant with 27 years of service. He was also a retired sheet metal worker.
Survivors include four sons, Ernie McIntosh, Carroll F. McIntosh Jr., Billy McIntosh and Sammy McIntosh, all of Aiken; a foster son, Jimmy Wood of Aiken; a brother, Forest McIntosh of Ninety Six; a sister, Juanita Mangoshe of Euclid, Ohio; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Services will military honors will be Saturday afternoon at George Funeral Home, Downtown. The time will be announced. Burial is in Aiken Memorial Gardens.
Visitation is from 6-8 tonight at the funeral home.
George Funeral Home is in charge.

Martin L. Rice
ELBERTON, Ga. — Martin L. Rice, 77, of 1820 Lincolnton Highway, widower of Sara Francis Davis Rice, passed away July 4, 2001, at Athens Regional Medical Center.
Born in Elbert County, he was a son of the late Lester Richard and Sarah “Sadie” Gary Rice. He was a retired building contractor and a member of Flatwood Pentecostal Holiness Church.
Survivors include a daughter, Louise Rice Gary of Elberton; two sons, Harmon Rice of Elberton and Jerry Rice of Augusta; three sisters, Sarah Dunn and Georgia Mae Rice, both of Elberton and Martha Fleming of Greenwood, S.C.; 13 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
Services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at Flatwood Pentecostal Holiness Church by the Rev. Phillip Hart. Burial is in Bethlehem United Methodist Church Cemetery.
Pallbearers are grandsons.
Visitation is from 7-9 tonight at Berry Funeral Home.
The family is at the home.
Memorials may be made to Flatwood Pentecostal Holiness Church.

Martha A. Shew
CLINTON, Ind. — Martha A. Shew, 102, passed away June 30, 2001.
Wintering in Greenwood, S.C., for many years, she attended First Presbyterian Church in Greenwood and was a member of the Ladies Bible Class. She was a quilter. She lived at The Vermilion Convalescent Center for the past two years.
Survivors include three grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Burial was in Roseland Cemetery, Terre Haute, Ind.
The local family is at the home of a daughter-in-law, Mrs. Robert (Margaret) Shew, in Wellington Green, Greenwood.
Frist Funeral Home was in charge.

Odell Rebecca Simon
GREENWOOD — Odell “Adell Thompson” Rebecca Parks Simon, wife George Henry Simon, passed away July 2, 2001, at University Hospital in Augusta.
Born in Greenwood, she was a daughter of James Calwise and the late Jessie Lee Thompson Parks Boozer. She was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include her husband of the home; her father of Youngs Town, Ohio; six sisters, Betty Jean Lawson of Detroit, Patricia Richardson of New York, Nellie King of Charlotte, N.C., Vanassa Calwise of Atlanta and Mary Calwise and Eugenia Calwise, both of Youngs Town; and four brothers, James Calwise Jr. of Youngs Town, Aldonzo Calwise of Upper Marlboro, Md., and Tommy Parks and Marion Parks, both of Greenwood.
Services will be conducted at 2 Sunday at Calvary Grove Baptist Church by the Rev. Willie Evans. Burial is in Evening Star Memorial Gardens. The body will be placed in the church at 1.
Pallbearers and flower bearers are family friends.
Visitation is at the home, 1411 Cooper St., and at the home of a brother, Tommy Parks, 108 Osborne St.

Rev. James D. Taylor
ABBEVILLE - Rev. James Dunbar Taylor, age 74, resident of 302 Perry Street, husband of Ina Randall Taylor, passed away July 4, 2001 at his home.
Born in Augusta, GA, he was a son of the late John D. and Pearl Eubanks Taylor. He was a Veteran of World War II, having served eight years in the US Army.
Rev. Taylor served over fifty years as a Congregational Holiness Church Minister and was a member of Abbeville Congre-gational Holiness Church where he had served for twenty-seven years. Other churches he pastored were: Pine Ridge C.H. Church in Hartsville, SC; Kannapolis C.H. Church in Kannapolis, NC; Caroleen C. H. Church and Sulpher Springs C. H. Church, both in Forest City, NC; and Freedom C. H. Church in Royston, GA. He was a member of The Abbeville Ministers Association and West Carolina C. H. Church Conference, and formerly served on various committees on a general level with The Congregational Holi-ness Church.
Surviving in addition to his wife of the home are one daughter, Omegia Taylor Ray, a son-in-law Jerry Ray, a granddaughter Mandy Ray Arrowood and grandson-in-law Dustin Arrowood all of Abbeville, two sisters: Naomi Williams and Hattie Mae Jones both of Augusta, GA. He was predeceased by a sister: Edna Valentine.
Funeral services will be conducted at 3 PM Saturday at Abbeville Congregational Holiness Church with Rev. Tye Sorrow, Rev. Cullen Hicks, Rev. Nolan Arrowood, and Rev. David Cobb officiating.
Burial will be in Forest Lawn Memory Gardens.
Pallbearers will be Al Randall, Billy Bowie, Rhett Simpson, Mack Ellis, Morrow Sorrow, and Bo Williams.
Honorary escort will be Ministers of The Congregational Holiness Church.
The family is at the home on Perry Street and will receive friends at Harris Funeral Home 6 until 8 PM Friday.

Wilbur Attaway
GREENWOOD — Wilbur Haragal Attaway, 79, of 109 Gantt Road, husband of Beulah Mabry Attaway, passed away July 5, 2001, at National Health Care in Greenwood.
Born in Aiken County, he was a son of the late Millard B. and Edith Gregory Attaway. He retired from Whaley Electrical Service in Columbia and, along with his wife, formerly owned and operated The Friendly Cafeteria, Columbia. He was a member of South Main Street Baptist Church and the Adult No. 10 Sunday School Department and the Brotherhood of the church. He was founder of the Wednesday Afternoon Prayer Meeting at the church and the church-sponsored Home Care Program for community home needs. Formerly of Columbia and Lake Murray, he had lived in Greenwood since 1993. He was a former member of Rosewood Baptist Church, Columbia, and Lexington Baptist Church while at Lake Murray. At both churches, he served in many capacities and was a promoter of church outreach programs.
Survivors include his wife of the home; and a brother, Andy G. Attaway of Seattle. Services are at 3:30 Sunday at Blyth Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. Ryan Eklund and the Rev. Dave Patterson. Burial is in Oakbrook Memorial Park.
Pallbearers are Jimmy Deason, Johnny Bowers, Allen Smith, Walter Garrett, Alton Gantt and Jerry Gantt.
Honorary escorts are deacons of South Main Street Baptist Church.
Visitation is from 2:30-3:30 Sunday at the funeral home.
Memorials may be made to Rosewood Baptist Church, Columbia; Lexington Baptist Church, Lexington; or South Main Street Baptist Church, 1000 S. Main St., Greenwood, S.C. 29646.
