ABBEVILLE — Thomas William “Tommy” Crawford, 65, of 104 Oakland Ave., passed away July 3, 2001, at his home.
Born in Chattanooga, Tenn., he was a son of the late Thomas Martin and Sarah DuggerCrawford. He served in the Navy and was a retired sales manager and a member of First Baptist Church of Abbeville.
Survivors include a daughter, Pamela Crawford of Santa Monica, Calif.; five sisters, Anne Moore of Moncks Corner, Jeanne Fortson and Frances Dence, both of Greenwood, Florence Reece of Ware Shoals and Ellen Giles of Abbeville; and three brothers, Jack Crawford of Glendon, N.C., Jimmy Crawford of Abbeville and Frank Crawford of Donalds. Memorial services were at 3 Friday at Harris Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. Earl Hartley.
Memorials may be made to Piedmont Agency on Aging, Meals on Wheels, P.O. Box 997, Greenwood, S.C. 29648.

Rosa Nell Ruff Graham
McCORMICK — Rosa Nell Ruff Graham, 62, of 17 Bolts Circle, Greenwood, passed away July, 6, 2001, at McCormick Health Care.
Born in Greenwood County, she was a daughter of the late Willie Earl and Bessie Bell Williams Ruff.
She was a former employer of Knight Industries. She was a member of Pine Pleasant Baptist Church, and a member of the Women’s Aide Society No. 104.
Survivors include a daughter, Brenda D. Graham Wright of Greenwood; two brothers, Robert Lee Ruff of Greenwood and Jimmy Thomas Ruff of Ninety Six; one sister, Nancy Jane Harts of Atlanta, Ga.; and one grandchild.
Services will be announced by Robinson and Son Mortuary Inc.
The family is at the home of her daughter at Lexington II, apartment H-7 in Greenwood.

Beatrice O. Jones
MOUNT CARMEL — Beatrice Oliver Jones, 75, of Route 1, Box 6, widow of Bradley Jones, passed away July 4, 2001, at her home.
Born in Mount Carmel, she was a daughter of the late Tom and Georgia Morris Oliver. She was a homemaker and a member of Harpers Chapel Church of God Holiness.
Survivors include five daughters, Sarah Jones of the home, Daisy Moore of New Jersey, Bessie Jones Gilchrist of Plum Branch and Charlotte Harris and Annie Bee Jones, both of Atlanta; a son, Mannix Jones of Atlanta; a stepson, Sheppard Jones of New York, N.Y.; two sisters, Maggie Bryson and Sallie Lanier, both of Greenwood; a niece reared in the home, Roberta Smith; 10 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Services will be conducted at 2 Monday at Harpers Chapel Church of God Holiness by Pastor Willie Morton. Burial is in the church cemetery. The body will be placed in the church at 1.
Pallbearers are Christopher Lamark Gilchrist, Shawn Sinclair Gilchrist, Bradley Jones Jr., Melvin Moore and Roy Smith Jr.
Flower bearers are Aleshia Spencer, Evelyn Smith, Ernestine Smith, Thalondra Wilson and Tawanda Jones.
Visitation is at the home and at Piney Grove Road, Plum Branch.
Viewing is from 1-8:30 Sunday at Richie Funeral Home, Abbeville.

Barron D. Kennedy Jr.
DUE WEST — Barron Devane Kennedy Jr., 82, of Due West Retirement Center, husband of Gladys Plowden Kennedy, passed away July 6, 2001.
Born in Rock Hill, he was a son of Barron D. Kennedy Sr. and Jane Louise “Jennie” Buice Kennedy. He lived in Greenville most of his life, graduating from the local schools and from Erskine College in 1939. For 43 years he was an official of the Peoples National Bank and its subsequent mergers. He served in the Army Air Corps for four years, in Europe during World War II. He served on the boards of several civic organizations in Greenville and was a deacon and elder of Greenville A.R.P. Church, where he served as treasurer for 25 years. Most recently, he was a member of Due West A.R.P. Church.
Survivors include his wife; and a son, Barron Kennedy III, and two grandchildren, all of Tazewell, Tenn.
Memorial services are at 3 Sunday at Due West Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church, with visitation after the services in the church fellowship hall.
Memorials may be made to Due West Retirement Center or HospiceCare of the Piedmont, 408 W. Alexander Ave., Greenwood, S.C. 29646.

Jimmy Tate
WARE SHOALS — Jimmy Tate, 52, of 37 N. Reigel Road, passed away July 6, 2001, at Self Memorial Hospital.
The family is at the home.
Services will be announced by Robinson-Walker Funeral Services in Ware Shoals, which is in charge.

Helen Jane Butler
GREER - Helen Jane Butler, 78, formerly of 106 Maple Drive, Inman, passed away July 6, 2001 at Greenville Memorial Hospital. She was married to the late Charles Edwin Butler.
Born in Apollo, Pennsylvania , she was the daughter of the late Harvey and Alice Ringer Faulk. She graduated from Slippery Rock State Teachers' College in 1944. She served as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army during WWII. She was the first licensed physical therapist in the state of South Carolina and worked as a physical therapist for 34 years in Anderson, Greenwood, and Greenville. She was a member of Edwards Road Baptist Church and a former member of Inman First Baptist Church. She was a Sunday School teacher for forty-two con-secutive years.
Surviving are a son, George Butler of Irmo, SC; four daughters, Polly Powell of Hendersonville, NC; Charlyne Butler of Goose Creek, SC; Sue Bennett of Barnwell, SC; and Allyson Hancock of Greer, SC; twelve grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; a sister, Imogene Moore and a brother, Harvey Faulk, both of Penn-sylvania, and a mother-in-law, Viola P. Butler of Travelers Rest, SC.
She was predeceased by a daughter, Patricia Wright of Laurens, SC and a sister, Dorothy Householder of Apollo, Pennsylvania .
Her grandsons will serve as pallbearers.
The internment will be held at Locust Hill Baptist Church Cemetery, Sunday, July 8, 2001 at 2:00 PM.
A memorial service will be conducted by Dr. Don Bishop at Inman First Baptist Church, Sunday, July 8, 2001 at 4:00 PM.
Visitation will immediately follow the service in the atrium.
The family is at the home of a daughter, Allyson Hancock, 102 Sugar Mill Way, Greer.
Memorials may be made to Inman First Baptist Church Youth Ministry, 14 N. Howard Street, Inman, SC 29349.
The Wood Mortuary, Inc., is in charge.

Mattie Riley, mother of sheriff
HODGES — Mattie Park Riley, 87, 1007 Riley Road North, widow of Eldred A. Riley Sr., passed away July 6, 2001, at her home.
Visitation is Saturday at Parker-White Funeral Home.
Services will be announced by Parker-White Funeral Home, Ware Shoals, which is in charge.

Mattie Park Riley
HODGES - Mattie Edelia Park Riley, 87, of 1007 Riley Road N., widow of Eldred Allen Riley Sr., passed away July 6, 2001 at her home. She was born in Winnsboro, SC a daughter of the late A. Hugh and Sophie W. Chappell Park. She was a Homemaker and Member of Walnut Grove Baptist Church where she taught Sunday School. She was a member of the WMU and Mt. Ariel U.D.C.
Surviving are four sons: Samuel P. Riley of Greenwood, Robert Hugh Riley and G. B. Riley both of Hodges and Russell M. Riley of Ware Shoals. Four daughters: Mrs. Raymond F. "Georgia" Mackey of Hodges; Mrs. Willie M. Ridgeway of Atlanta, GA, Mrs. John B. "Helen" Rhoden Jr. of Hampton and Mrs. William L. "Susan" Dodson Jr. of Greenville. Three sisters: Mrs. D.P. Coleman of Blair, Mrs. Huss Fennell of Chapin and Mrs. Grayson Dixon of Great Falls. A sister-in-law, Mrs. S. Capers "Bertha" Riley of Hodges; 20 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; 4 step-great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Riley was predeceased by two sons, Walter B. Riley and Eldred Allen Riley Jr.
Funeral services 3 PM Sunday at Walnut Grove Baptist Church with the Reb. Brian G. Saxon, Rev. Rodney Jeanes, and Reb. Lamar Babb officiating. Pallbearers are grandsons: Paul, Brian, Shannon and Warren Riley; Stephen Rhoden; Scott Ridgeway. Honorary pallbearers are members of the Bethany Sunday School Class. Burial will follow in the Church Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Walnut Grove Baptist Church, 230 Morgan Rd., Hodges, SC 29653 or to Hospice Care of The Piedmont, 408 W. Alexander Ave., Greenwood, SC 29646.
The body is at Parker-White Funeral where the family will receive friends from 6 to 9 pm Saturday. The body will be placed in the church at 2 PM Sunday.
The family is at the home, 1007 Riley Road N.

Bradley ‘Shoat’ Coleman
CALHOUN FALLS — Services for Bradley “Shoat” Coleman of 113 Bush Street will be at 2:30 today at McAllister Chapel Holiness Church, conducted by the Revs. John H. Williams, Robert Belcher and Johnnie Waller. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The body will be placed in the church at 1:30.
Pallbearers will be Bobby Hill, Michael Johnson, Eugene Hill, Calvin Long, Ernest Baskin and Charlie Jones.
Flower bearers will be Denise Willingham, Tamela Murray, Brittany Obot, Miyarae Payton, Vanessa Dorsey, Dornisha Freeman, Shanta Watton and Laquatta Murray.
Friendly Funeral Home is in charge.

Beatrice McCain
EDGEFIELD — Mrs. Willie Beatrice Philpot McCain, 74, of 318 Glover Street, passed away July 4, 2001.
Survivors include three sons, Joseph McCain, Wade McCain, both of Edgefield and Donald McCain of Fla.; two daughters, Edna Graham of Johnston, S.C. and Freda McCain of Edgefield; two sisters, Georgia Simpkins of Washington , D.C. and Geneva Williams of Augusta, Ga.; two brothers, Gus Philpot of Clark Hills, S.C. and Lucius Philpot of Augusta, Ga.; 21 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 3 today at Carey Hill Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Clifford Williams. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Friends may call the residence of her son, Joseph McCain, 280 Glover Street, Edgefield.
G. L. Brightharp & Sons Mortuary is in charge.

Dick Abney
GREENWOOD — Joel Richard “Dick” Abney Jr., 80, of 505 Lodge Drive, husband of Carolyn “Peaches” Clements Abney, passed away July 8, 2001, at Self Memorial Hospital.
Services will be announced by Blyth Funeral Home, which is in charge.

Earl Belcher Jr.
ABBEVILLE — Earl Belcher Jr., 59, of 8 Dogwood Lane, husband of Barbara Brassell Belcher, passed away July 7, 2001, at Self Memorial Hospital in Greenwood.
Born in McCormick County, he was a son of Alberta McHerrin Belcher and the late Earl Belcher Sr. He was a retired partner in a family business in New York and was of the Methodist faith.
Survivors include his mother of Abbeville; his wife of New York; three daughters, Karen Cureton of Myrtle Beach and Michelle Belcher and Debra Belcher, both of New York; three sons, Eric Belcher, Kevin Belcher and Craig Belcher, all of New York; two sisters, Merrin Belcher and Edna Oliphant, both of Abbeville; a brother, Larry Belcher of Abbeville; and nine grandchildren.
The family is at the home of his mother, 8 Dogwood Lane.
Services will be announced by Brown and Walker Funeral Home, which is in charge.

Clara C. King
ABBEVILLE — Clara Louise Culbertson King, 74, of 83 Thompson Circle, widow of Albert H. King Jr., passed away July 7, 2001, at Abbeville Nursing Home.
A daughter of the late Claude and Ella Culbertson, she was a homemaker and a member of First Baptist Church of Abbeville.
Survivors include two daughters, Margaret Bray of Abbeville and Betty Jo Palmer of Logansville, Ga.; a son, David King of Missoula, Mont.; two sisters, Dot Babb of Atlanta and Mildred O’Shields of Laurens; two brothers, Leroy Culbertson and Lewis Culbertson, both of Laurens; 10 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.
Services will be conducted at 2 Tuesday at Harris Funeral Home by the Rev. Tye Sorrow. Burial is in Long Cane Cemetery.
Visitation is from 1-2 Tuesday at the funeral home.
The family is at the home of Margaret and Fred Bray, 400 Perry St.

William Sprowl
GREENWOOD — William Sprowl, 72, of 617 Evans St., widower of Hattie Warren Sprowl, passed away July 8, 2001, at his home.
Born in Greenwood County, he was a son of the late Frank and Willie Lee Carter Sprowl. He was a retiree of S.C. Highway Department and a van driver for Piedmont Council on Aging. He was also a Shriner and a member of Sons of Aide, Chapter 419 Mount Pisgah Masonic Lodge and Mount Moriah Baptist Church.
Survivors include four sons, Howard Sprowl of Due West, Robert L. Sprowl of Greenwood and Walter Eugene Sprowl and Anthony S. Sprowl, both of the home; five daughters, Laura M. Sprowl and Dale Anderson Perrin, both of Greenwood, Rosaline Rena Sprowl and Cossienetta Williams, both of the home and Nancy A.S. Carson of Anderson; four sisters, Alice Burton and Lillie Mae Elam, both of Greenwood, Margaret Bates and Mary Esther Ellerbe, both of Philadelphia; three brothers, James Sprowl of Chicago, Frank Sprowl of Cokesbury and Hubert Sprowl if Greenwood; six grandchildren, two reared in the home, Hattdrikus Sprowl and Nikitia Sprowl; and two great-grandchildren.
The family is at the home.
Services will be announced by Robinson & Son Mortuary Inc., which is in charge.

Robert Cannon
LAUREL, Md. — Robert Cannon, husband of Jonella Conway Cannon, passed away June 4, 2001, at Golden Oaks in Laurel, Md.
Born in Greenwood County, he was a son of the late Y.J. and Mary McGowans Cannon. He attended Brewer High School and was a former member of Vaughnville Baptist Church in Chappells. He sang with several gospel groups, including the Golden Stars. He was a member of the Rising Son Lodge No. 410 in Chappells.
He was preceded in death by two brothers J.Y. Cannon and L.C. Cannon, husband of Eula M. Cannon.
Surviving, in addition to his wife of Laurel, Md., are one son, Rodney Cannon of Laurel, Md.; four brothers, the Rev. Ernest Cannon, husband of Easter M., the Rev. Clyde Cannon, husband of Viola K., Willie B Cannon, the husband of Margaret T., and Roscoe Cannon, Sr., the husband of Virginia W., all of Greenwood; three sisters Hattie B. Morton, wife of Samuel, Daisy L. Morton, wife of Milledge, and Helen Cannon Talley, all of Greenwood; two aunts, Dessie Lee Workman and Lillie Pearl Brunson, both of Greenwood; and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services will be conducted on Monday June 11, 2001, at the Greater Washington Deliverance Temple, 8600 Locust Grove Drive in Laurel, Md.
Memorials may be made to Golden Oaks, 9001 Cherry Lane, Laurel, Md. 20708 or to the charity of your choice.
