Elizabeth Moon
GREENWOOD — Elizabeth P. Moon, 92, widow of William David Moon, passed away Thursday, Dec. 27, 2001, at Self Regional Medical Center.
Born in Elberton, Ga., she was a daughter of the late Wiley and Lettie Lee Roberts Payton.
She was retired from the Ninety Six Mill and was a member of Blyth Road Church of God of Prophecy.
Survivors include a son, Clarence L. Moon of Greenwood; a sister, Lucy Inez Zatko Payton of Greenwood; and one granddaughter.
Services are at 2 Sunday at Harley Funeral Home Chapel conducted by the the Revs. Ralph James Bishop and George Harrison, assisted by Bishop Freddie Rodriguez.
Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery.
Visitation is tonight from 7-9 at Harley Funeral Home.
The family is at the home of her sister and nephew, Inez and David Payton, 314 Blyth Road.
Harley Funeral Home is in charge. Pallbearers are Brian Rhodes, Doug Allison, Keith Timms, Emanuel Timms, Tom Burrows and Peanut Green.

Asa Parks Sr.
GREENWOOD — Services for Asa Parks Sr., of 27 E New Market St., will be at 3 Saturday at Second Damascus Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. James McKee, assisted by the Revs. Leroy Robertson, Ricky Quarles and Willie Evans.
Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The body will be placed in the church at 2.
Pallbearers are grandsons, nephews and James Curry Jr.
Flower bearers are granddaughters and nieces.
Visitation is tonight at the home of his son, Asa Parks Jr., 453 Ninety Six Highway, Greenwood.
Percival-Tompkins Funeral Home is in charge.

Nathan Thompson Sr.

NINETY SIX — Nathan Thompson Sr., 64, of 217 Little Mountain Road, husband of Mary Jo Thompson, passed away Jan. 14, 2001, at Anna Marie Nursing Home in North Augusta.
Born in Fairfield County, he was a son of the late James and Mattie O’Neal Thompson.
He was a member of Enoree Zion Baptist Church, Ninety Six.
Survivors include his wife; three daughters, Jo Ann Thompson and Brenda T. Robinson, both of the home and Valerie Thompson of Donalds; two sons, Nathan Thompson Jr. and Walleed Thompson, both of Greenwood; a brother, Robert Bower of Detroit; two sisters, Queenie Prielou of Englewood, N.J., and Jessie Tootle of New York; and his stepmother, Bernice Thompson of New York.
The family is at the home.
Services will be announced by Daniel and Sons Funeral Home, which is in charge.

Nathan Thompson Sr.

NINETY SIX — Services for Nathan Thompson Sr., of 217 Little Mountain Road, will be at 2 Friday at Enoree Zion Baptist Church, Enoree Church Road, Ninety Six, conducted by the Rev. James Sims, pastor, assisted by the Rev. George W. Keys and the Rev. Joseph Caldwell.
Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Pallbearers are deacons and trustees of the church.
Flower bearers are ushers and choir members of the church.
Viewing will be Thursday afternoon at Daniel and Sons Funeral Home.
Visitation is at the residence Thursday afternoon.
Daniel and Sons Funeral Home is in charge.

Jimmy Tate

WARE SHOALS — Jimmy Tate, 52, of 37 N. Riegel St., passed away July 6, 2001, at Self Memorial Hospital in Greenwood.
Born in Elbert County, Ga., he was a son of the late Collin and Lizzie Mae Blackwell Tate.
Survivors include Survivors include a wife, Barbara Tate of Greenwood, four sons, Jimmy Tate Jr. of Berlin, Md., Terry Tate of Greenwood, Jason Morton of Abbeville and Irvin Jones of Anderson; two brothers, Andrew Tate of the home and Adger Tate of Abbeville; and two sisters, Macie Lewis of Philadelphia and Lola Mae Tate of the home.
Services are at 1 Tuesday at Robinson-Walker Funeral Service, conducted by the Rev. Amos Harlings.
Visitation is from 12:30-1 at the funeral home.
The family is at the home.
Robinson-Walker Funeral Service is in charge.
Burial will be in Evening Star Memorial Gardens, Greenwood.

W. Richard Garrett, Jr. Ph.D.

ABBEVILLE - W. Richard 'Dick' Garrett., Ph.D., 55, resident of 105 Alice Drive, husband of Karen Watson Garrett passed away Saturday, June 23, 2001 at Greenville Memorial Hospital in Greenville, SC.
Born in Raleigh, NC he was the son of Anne Elizabeth Garrett and the late W. Richard Garrett, Sr.
Dr. Garrett received this M. Ed., Educational Administration/Supervision, 1973 from Clemson University, Clemson, SC.
He received his Ph.D., Educational Administration and Supervision, 1987 from the University of South Carolina, Columbia, SC.
His many Educational Highlights include Chairman, Educational Improvement Act Council, 1991-1992.
Chairman, Awards/Recognition Committee, 1991-1996.
Chairman, Greenwood Area Staff Development Consortium, 1991-2001.
Chairman, Greenwood Area Consortium, 1991-2001.
Chairman, Western Piedmont Education Consortium, 1991-2001.
He was Chairman, Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Evaluation Committee, 2001.
He was Associate Professor Clemson University 1987-91.
Dr. Garrett's Professional Experience: He was principal of Conway Middle School, Horry County, SC 1984-1986.
He was Area Superintendent, Lancaster Area #2 (Buford Area Schools), Lancaster, SC 1987-1988.
He became Superintendent of Abbeville County Schools in 1988 to Present.
During his tenure as Superintendent his many accomplishments included being instrumental in passing of $8.5 million referendum for construction of new middle school (2000), instrumental in passing $10 million referendum for construction of three new elementary schools (1995).
When Dr. Garrett became Superintendent of Abbeville schools he overcame a debt of $700,000 and the current balance is in excess of $1.5 million plus.
He developed and implemented a comprehensive evaluation system for principals.
He introduced the use of appropriate technology into the district's operation and instruction, instituted innovative staff development, increased adult education by 300%, instituted social services interagency teams to support students and their families and increased the number of successful school-based teacher grants.
Some of Dr., Garrett's Publication/Major Presentations include Flanigan, J.L., W.R. Garrett, Jr. and M. Richardson (1991 March). Removing the Barriers to Effectiveness: A Theoretical and Practical Approach to Principal Evaluation, Garrett, W. and J.L. Flanigan (1991) Principal Evaluation: A Definitive Process and Garrett, W.R. (1986) A Study Relationship of Academic Achievement and Per Pupil Expenditure to School enrollment by Grade Level in South Carolina Public Schools.
Dr. Garrett served in many professional and civic organizations including Association of Supervision and Curriculum, South Carolina Association of School Administrators, American Association of School Administrators, Piedmont Technical College, Board of Visitors 1988-90, Foothills United Way Chairman 1993 and a member of Rotary International Abbeville Chapter.
He was a United States Army Veteran of the Vietnam War having served as Paramedic, Republic of Vietnam.
Dr. Garrett's son, Richard III interviewed his dad recently for a class assignment on his thoughts and theories of education.
His dad related that he wanted to make education a better experience than he had endured and he accomplished this through his philosophy- Children and teachers come first.
The lighthouse that he introduced to the district means that 'You can't be a beacon if your light doesn't shine.'
Survivors include his wife Karen Watson Garrett of the home; a son W. Richard Garrett III and daughter Margaret Ann Garrett both of the home and his mother Anne Elizabeth Garrett. Also surviving are sister Nancy and brother-in-law Edward Graham of Florence, SC and sister Anita and brother-in-law Larry Watson of Daytona, FL.
Memorial services will be conducted Wednesday June 27, 2001 at 3:00 PM from Abbeville First Baptist Church with the Rev. Reiny Koschel officiating.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 till 8:00 PM Tuesday evening at the Harris Funeral Home.
The family is at the home at 105 Alice Drive Abbeville, SC.
The family requests that flower be omitted and memorials be made to the American Stroke Association, C/O Harris Funeral Home PO Box 549 Abbeville, SC 29620.
Harris Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
