RIDGELAND — Services for Rosemarie Rivers, 65, will be noon Thursday at Carey Hill Baptist Church, where she was a member and assistant secretary, with burial in Button Cemetery. Visitation is 4-8 p.m. today at Bostick Funeral Home. Born in Ridgeland to Evelyn Flint, she died Nov. 5, 2004. Surviving: children, King Jr., Brian and Capt. Vincent Sr. Rivers, Karen Burns; 10 grandchildren; 1 great-grandson.

Martha Ray

CAMDEN — The Angel sent from above, that we call Mother, Martha Ray, went to be with Jesus on Monday, November 8, 2004. Funeral services for Martha Viola Parker Ray, 85, widow of James Claude Ray, Sr., will be held on Thursday, November 11, 2004 at 2:00 p.m. at Lakeshore Drive Church of God with burial to follow in Forest Lawn Memorial Park. Rev. Neal Nolan, Rev. Burch Kelly, and Rev. Tim Shirley will officiate. The Family will receive friends on Wednesday, November 10, 2004 from 7:00-9:00 p.m. at Kornegay Funeral Home Camden Chapel. Memorials may be made to Lakeshore Drive Church of God, 1201 Lakeshore Drive, Camden, SC 29020.

Mrs. Ray was born in Kershaw County, a daughter of the late Levi and Emmie Self Parker. She was a member of the Lakeshore Drive Church of God.

Surviving are 7 daughters, Mary Osmer of Cassatt, Geneva Lyles of Elgin, Louise Hall of Cassatt, Jessie Anderson of Camden, Vera Stevens of Cassatt, Carolyn Morris of Hartsville, and Sarah Branham of Lugoff, 3 sons, Claude Ray Jr. of Lugoff, Clennie Ray of Camden, and Charles (Bubba) Ray of Camden; 30 grandchildren, 42 great grandchildren, 5 great-great grandchildren, sister, Ruth Sisk of Nashville, TN.

Caroline Neal

HOPKINS — Funeral service for Caroline Adams Neal of 2028 Drybranch Road will be held 3:00 p.m. Thursday, November 11, 2004 at Mt. Moriah Baptist Church. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The body will be placed in the church one hour prior to arrangements. Visitation will be held Wednesday, November 10, 2004, 3-9 p.m. at the funeral home.

J.P. Holley Funeral Home, Garners Ferry Road Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Neal died Thursday, November 4, 2004. Born in Gadsden, she was the daughter of the late Alexander and Amy Davis Adams. She was a member of Mt. Moriah Baptist Church.

She is survived by her son, Alexander Adams, Jr., Hawaii; sister, Hattie Sumter, Hopkins, SC; grandson, Alexander Adams, Jr.; sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law; nieces and nephews.

Jyquan Sypherett

BLAIR — A graveside service for Jyquan T. Sypherett, infant son of Uylsses Sypherett and Vernisha L. Martin, will be held at noon Thursday in St. Peters AME Church Cemetery. Russell-McCutchen Funeral Home, Winnsboro, is in charge. Jyquan died November 4, 2004. Surviving are his parents; brother, Jymon Sypherett; sisters, Tymesha, Alexander and Shaquitta Henderson.

Helen Wiles

ORANGEBURG — Helen Rast Wiles, 85, died Monday. Funeral is 2 p.m. Thursday, November 11, 2004 at Thompson Funeral Home Chapel in Orangeburg with burial in Bowman Memorial Cemetery. Visitation is 7-9 p.m. Wednesday at Thompson Funeral Home in Orangeburg.

LAKE CITY — Graveside service for Ola Mae Welch, 77, widow of Paul Welch, 2 p.m. today: Horse Branch Free Will Baptist Church, where she was a Sunday School teacher for 40 years. Floyd Funeral Home, Olanta, is in charge. Born in Williamsburg Co. to Wanie and Janie Kirby Coker, she died Nov. 8, 2004. Surviving: children, Karen Barnhill, Anthony Welch; sisters, Myrtle Cook, Louisa Tyler; grands, Jerry, Emilee.

Jimmy Morris

ELLOREE — Jimmy David Morris, 56, died Monday. Funeral is 11 a.m. Thursday, November 11, 2004 at Thompson Funeral Home Chapel in Orangeburg with burial in Calvary Baptist Church Cemetery near Neeses. Visitation is 7-9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Albertine Bedenbaugh

HARTSVILLE — Services for Albertine Hearl Bedenbaugh, 91, widow of William Bedenbaugh, are 2 p.m. Friday (visitation 5-7 tonight) at Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home; entombment in Darlington Memorial Gardens. Jessie Mae Bell

WINNSBORO — Services with burial for Jessie Mae Bell, widow of Heston Bell, are 2 p.m. Friday at St. John AME Church in middlesix; visitation and viewing 1-9 p.m. today at Glover’s Memorial Chapel. Born to George Ford and Isabell Hair, she died Nov. 9, 2004. Surviving: children, Hazel Clark, Larry, Larry Jr., Jonathan Bell; stepson, Mabry Young; sisters, Sophese Blackmon, Willie Mae Richardson.

Coleman Bolick

COLUMBIA — Graveside services for Coleman Bolick, 81, will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 13, 2004, at the Salem Presbyterian Church Cemetery conducted by Rev. Richard Hodges. The family will receive friends after the service in the Church Fellowship Building. Memorials may be made to Salem Presbyterian Church, 276 State Highway 215 N. Blair, SC 29015. Pope Funeral Home of Winnsboro is in charge.

Mr. Bolick died Wednesday, Nov. 10, 2004.

Born Oct. 5, 1923, in Fairfield County, he was a son of the late Samuel Stevenson Bolick and Eunice Propst Bolick. He is survived by siblings, Samuel Propst Bolick, Margaret “Peggy” Bolick Cook, William Henry Bolick and nephews Larry M. Bolick and William H. “Bill” Bolick, Jr.

Mr. Bolick graduated from the University of South Carolina School of Pharmacy. Following graduation he taught pharmaceutical compounding at USC and mentored many pharmacy students during his career. He worked at Taylor Street Pharmacy as pharmacist for over thirty years, until his retirement in 1983.

Surviving are nephews and nieces: Sam R. Bolick and his wife, Jane Wade Bolick, of Concord, NC; Linda Bolick Pitt and husband, Joe Pitt and children Andy, Tyler and Ruth Ann of Buffalo; Marion Bolick and his wife, Denise Clowney Bolick and children Anna and Heather, of Blair; Susan Bolick Aldrich and her husband, Tim Aldrich, of Columbia.

Gladys Bratton

YORK — Services for Gladys Childers Bratton, 82, widow of R.C. Bratton, 2 p.m. Saturday at Central Baptist Church, burial: Fredrick Memorial Gardens, both in Gaffney. Visitation is 6-8 p.m. Friday at Bratton Funeral Home. Born in Cherokee Co. to Wardell and Keula P. Childers, she died Nov. 10, 2004. Surviving: children, C. Dean Bratton, Linda Pratt; siblings, Wendell Childers, Mary Coyle, Lydia Lee; 4 grands; more.

Jerry Duncan

ST. STEPHEN — Services for Jerry Duncan will be held at 1 p.m. today at Gethers Funeral Home with burial in St. Stephen Baptist Cemetery. Born in Charleston to Frank and Florence Gibson, he is survived by children, Tyuan, Shaday Duncan; mother, Virginia Washington ; siblings, Nell Giles, Hazel Garvin, Earline Mazyck, Mary, David, Dennis Washington , Ruth McAllister, Joe Jr., Luke Duncan.

Leila Grooms

CONCORD, N.C. — A service to celebrate the life of Mrs. Leila Adell Barefoot Grooms, 77, of Concord, NC, will be held at 3:00 P.M. Thursday, November 11, 2004, in the Chapel of Greenlawn Funeral Home, with Rev. Eric Sloan officiating. Interment will follow in Greenlawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends Thursday at Greenlawn Funeral Home from 1:00 P.M. until 3:00 P.M. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Cabarrus County, NC, P.O. Box 1235, Concord, NC 28026. Floral donations may be sent to Greenlawn Funeral Home, 845 Leesburg Road, Columbia, SC 29209.

Mrs. Grooms lost her strong will battle with lung cancer on November 8, 2004, at her home. She was preceded in death by her late husbands, Belton Dempsey Barefoot and Hank Grooms. She will rest in peace beside her late husband, Belton Dempsey Barefoot. She was a beloved wife, mother and grandmother, and loved by all who knew her. She was one of the most independent, strong willed, feisty, but most giving person, you would ever want to meet and will be truly missed by all of us who were blessed to have known her. The family would like to thank Hospice of Cabarrus County, NC, for their care, support, and guidance.

She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Joan and Dale Gant of Charlotte, NC; a son and daughter-in-law, Joseph and Debbie Barefoot of Houston, TX; 5 beautiful grandchildren, Jason, Marissa, Marcus, Devin, and Ridge.

Visitation is 6:30-8:30 tonight at Holcombe Funeral Home. Born in Jonesville to Arthur and Mary R. Hodge, he died Nov. 9, 2004. Surviving: wife, Linda F. Hodge; children, Brandi Harvey, Tony Hodge; brother, William Hodge; 5 grands.

Nathaniel Hubbard Sr.

ORANGEBURG — Services for Nathaniel Hubbard Sr., 67, 11 a.m. today (viewing 10 a.m.) at North Orangeburg UMC. Simmons Funeral Home is in charge. Born in Orangeburg to Samuel and Blondenia Hubbard, he died Nov. 4, 2004. Surviving: wife, Louesther Hubbard; children, Michael, Mark, Quamel, Miranda Hubbard, Garrick King, Sammy Hamilton Jr., Shelbie White, Sandra Seigler; 2 siblings.

Troy Knight

SUMMERVILLE — A memorial service for Troy Guerard Knight, 38, will be held at 2 p.m. today at Bethany UMC. Burial will be private. Parks Funeral Home is in charge. Born in Summerville to L.C. and Rhonda Guerard Knight, he died Nov. 8, 2004. He was a graduate of the College of Charleston and USC Law School. Surviving: parents; sister, Kelly Byrd; niece, Madelyn Byrd; his beloved Jack Russell Terrier, Logan.

H.C. Mayfield

CARLISLE — Services with burial for H.C. “Pap” Mayfield, 77, are 2 p.m. Friday (viewing 1 p.m.)at Ebenezer Baptist Church; viewing 3-9 p.m. today and 9 a.m.-noon Friday at King’s Funeral Home, Chester. Born in Chester Co. to Jasper Hayes and Verlie Mayfield Wilkes, he died Nov. 7, 2004. Surviving: wife, Ruby Glenn Mayfield; children, Charles, Terry Mayfield, Dianne, Carolyn Gist, Essie Brantley, Barbara Davis.

I. Russell Logan Jr.

OLANTA — Ira Russell Logan, Jr., age 55, died on November 10, 2004 at his residence after an illness.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Friday (November 12, 2004) at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church with burial in Tabernacle Cemetery directed by Floyd Funeral Home of Olanta. Visitation will be Thursday (November 11, 2004) from 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Born in Sumter County, he was a son of the late Ira “Buck” Russell Logan, Sr. and Nolia Parnell Logan. Mr. Logan was the owner and operator of Russell’s Barber Shop in Olanta. He was a former member of the National Guard. He was a graduate of the Capital Barber School and was the Past President of the South Carolina Barber Board. He was a member of the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church. He was a member of the Sportsman Hunting Club, The National Fox Hunters Association and was recently inducted into the South Carolina Fox Hunters Hall of Fame. He was a former Board Member of the Olanta Business Association where he served as Past President. He was a Mason and a member of Fidelity Lodge #394.

Surviving are two daughters, Julie Ann Logan of La Jolla, California and Carole Anne (Randy) Bradshaw of Manning; a son, Christopher Russell Logan of Cheraw; three sisters, Linda L. Green of Florence, Terry L. (Frank) White of Florence and Tammy Smith of Turbeville; one brother, Larry (Dale) Logan of Lynchburg; two grandchildren, Madison Alexis White and Christopher Mason Logan.

The family request that memorials be made to the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church.

Judith Peterson

GEORGETOWN — A memorial service for Judith Helen Peterson, 58, will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Graham Funeral Home (visitation to follow). Born in Brockton, Mass., to Howard and Barbara Wall Peterson, she died Nov. 8, 2004. She retired as a teacher with the Georgetown County School System after 30 years of service. Surviving are sister, Lane Peters; niece, Lauren Mann; nephew, Jordan Mann.

Comilla Phillips

UNION — A graveside service for Comilla “Bill” Cooper Phillips, 85, widow of S.T. Phillips, is 11 a.m. Saturday in Union Memorial Gardens; visitation to follow. S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home is in charge. Born in Union to John Sr. and Nettie Crow Cooper, she died Nov. 7, 2004. Surviving are daughter, Patricia Phillips; grandsons, Tom III, David Small; special niece, Donna Cooper; other nieces and nephews.

Martha Pierre

SUMTER — Services with burial for Martha Singleton Pierre, 89, widow of Jack Pierre, will be held at 3:30 p.m. Friday (viewing 2:30 p.m.) at Wayman Chapel AME Church, where she was a member. Job’s Mortuary is in charge. Born in Sumter to William and Susannah Taylor Singleton, she died Nov. 5, 2004. Surviving are nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Thomas Ramsey Jr.

JERSEY CITY, N.J. — Services for Thomas Ramsey Jr., formerly of St. Stephen, S.C., will be held at 1 p.m. Friday (visitation 7-8 tonight) at Allen AME Church, St. Stephen; burial in St. Stephen Baptist Cemetery. Gethers Funeral Home, St. Stephen, is in charge. Surviving are mother, Bertha L. Ramsey; sons, Thomas III, Terrance Ramsey; siblings, Rickie Ramsey, Loretta Surgeon, Betty Morrison, Cynthia Sumpter.

Beatrice Ray

HEMINGWAY — Services for Beatrice Agnes Rawls Ray, 74, widow of Ollie Ray, 11 a.m. Friday (visitation 7-9 tonight) at Morris Funeral Home; burial in Old Field Cemetery. Born in Hemingway to James Sr. and Lottie Jones Rawls, she died Nov. 10, 2004. Surviving are children, James Sr., Kenneth, Carol, Donna, Barbara Ray; grandchildren; siblings, Willa Campbell, Ann Rish, Johnnie Uecker, Pete Rawls Jr.

John Thomas

FLORENCE — Funeral services for Mr. John Calvin Thomas will be conducted 12 noon Thursday, Nov. 11, 2004 at Trinity Baptist Church. Interment will follow in Salem U.M. Church Cemetery directed by Smith’s Funeral Home, Inc. of Florence.

John Calvin Thomas was born, an identical twin, to the late George W. and Bertha Hyman Thomas in the Evergreen Community of Florence County, where he resided until he was called to his eternal rest.

He was a 1963 graduate of Wilson High School. In 1964, Calvin and two of his brothers formed Thomas Brothers Construction Company.

Calvin was a member of Salem U.M. Church. He served with distinction for 23 years on the Florence School District One Board of Trustees.

He was a life member of the NAACP and served as President on the Florence Branch from 1990 until his death. Calvin served on state and national committees of the NAACP.

Survivors include his wife, Mildred Smalls Thomas; two sons, Darrin Todd (Kela E.) Thomas and Deidrich Thomas; two grandsons, Todd Asher and Garrison Ervin Thomas; four brothers, Charles (Barbara) Thomas, Edd L. (Lizzie F.) Thomas, twin brother, James Alvin (Marsha) Thomas, George (Thomesenia) Thomas, and a host of other family members and friends.

Ruth Riles

SUMTER — Services for Ruth Virginia Windham Riles, 80, widow of James Riles, will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home with burial in Sumter Cemetery. Born in Sumter to John and Elizabeth Kolb Windham, she died Nov. 9, 2004. Surviving are children, Norman, Jay, Brenda Riles, Debbie Seegers, Patricia Hodge, Barbara Turner, Kay Gardner; grandchildren; great, great-great-grands.
