GREENWOOD — Bernice Knight Cox, 75, of 102 Cherokee Drive, died Tuesday, Jan. 15, 2002, at the Saluda Nursing Center. Visitation is from 6-8 Friday at Blyth Funeral Home. The family is at the home of the son, John Cox Jr., 104 Barrington Court in Creekside. Services will be announced by Blyth Funeral Home, which is in charge.

Margaret Hayes

GREENWOOD — Margaret Meader Gillespie Hayes, 74, widow of Dale Hayes, died Wednesday, Jan. 9, 2002, at Morningside Assisted Living. Born in Kanawha County, W.Va., she was a daughter of the late Clyde Emerson and Arbutus Payne Meader. She was a graduate of East Bank High School, East Bank, W.Va., and a retired employee of the State of West Virginia. She was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Survivors include two sons, William Paul Gillespie of Chesapeake, W.Va., and Jonathan Emerson Gillespie of Greenwood; 10 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. JOHNSTON — Marie Gunter Morris, 88, died Wednesday, Jan. 16, 2002. Born in Lexington County, she was a retired sales manager with Richard’s Furriers and a member of Johnston First Baptist Church. Survivors include a son, Gunter Morris of Johnston; a daughter, Mattaline Hicks of Batesburg-Leesville; a stepdaughter, Betty Chrisley of Greenwood; a sister, Ila Hallman of Leesville; and three grandchildren. Services are at 2:30 Friday at Bland Funeral Home, with burial in Morris Cemetery. Visitation is from 1:30-2:30 Friday at the funeral home. The family is at the home of Mattaline Morris Hicks, 2424 Canney Branch Road, Leesville. Memorials may be made to Johnston First Baptist Church, 700 Church St., Johnston, S.C. 29832. Kathleen R. Rhodes

SALUDA — Kathleen R. Rhodes, 88, widow of Everette Rhodes, died Tuesday, Jan. 15, 2002, at her home. Born in Kirksey, she was a daughter of the late William Lites and Lila Lipford Rambo. A seamstress, she retired from Nantex in 1958. She was a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church and the Ida Crouch Sunday School Class, the Young at Heart and the Wesleyan Circle of the church. Survivors include a daughter, Lila Richardson of Waynesville, N.C.; a son, James Rhodes of Everette, Wash.; three grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Services are at 1 Friday at St. Paul United Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. Nels Ledwell and the Rev. Roy Pryor. Burial is in Greenwood Memorial Gardens. Visitation is from 6-8 tonight at Ramey Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to St. Paul United Methodist Church. Ramey Funeral Home is in charge. Mildred M. Simmons GREENWOOD - Mildred Irene Mewbourne Simmons, 81, of 4 Royal Oak Drive, widow of Frances Richard "Dick" Simmons, died Tuesday, January 15, 2002, at her home. Born in Honea Path, she was a daughter of the late Roy Denver and Clara Dunlap Mewbourne. She was an avid golfer, and member of Greenwood Country Club where she was 1965 President of the Women's Golf Association, and won the Women's Club Championship eight times. (1966, 1970, 1971, 1974, 1977, 1979, 1984, and 1985.) She was a volunteer at Self Regional Medical Center for over 40 years and was a member of Mathews United Methodist Church where she taught the Kindergarten Sunday School Class for over 45 years. Surviving are her daughter, Mrs. Thomas (Beth Simmons) Nickles, Jr. of Marietta, GA; three sisters, Annabel Dickard of Greenville, Sarajane Martin of Williamston and Lutherene Ouzts of Greenwood; two grandchildren, Jennifer Nickles Mangum of Athens and Thomas Edward Nickles, III of Marietta, GA; four great-grandchildren, Paul Daniel Mangum, III and Matthew Thomas Mangum, both of Athens and Ashley Lynne Nickles and Thomas Edward Nickles, IV, both of Marietta. Services will be at 11 AM Friday at Mathews United Methodist Church with the Reverend Nellie Cloninger officiating. Entombment will follow at Greenwood Memorial Gardens Mausoleum. Pallbearers are Edward Harvey Morgan, Wallace Edward Forrester, Jason Austin Stewart, Jim Richard Stewart, Christopher Dale Childs, John Curry, Jamie Manley, Allen Hughes, and Jody Blake Childs. Honorary escort will be the members of the Women's Golf Association and the staff of Greenwood County Club. The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 PM Thursday at the Harley Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to Mathews United Methodist Church in memory of Mildred Simmons, P.O. Box 2066, Greenwood, SC 29646.

GREENWOOD — Services for Alyce Frazier Smith, of 101 Donegal Drive, Emerald Place, are at 11 a.m. Saturday at Faith Christian Center Church, conducted by the Rev. Alvin Deal. The body will be placed in the church at 10. Burial is in Young’s Chapel Baptist Church Cemetery. Pallbearers are Michael Perry, Albert Quarles, James Taylor, Deyon Taylor, Shawn Lanier and Eugene Griffin. Flower bearers are friends of the family. Claude A. Winn Jr.

MACON, Ga. — Claude Adolphus “Dolph” Winn Jr., 76, of 4440 Glenwood Drive, formerly of Abbeville, S.C., died Tuesday, Jan. 15, 2002, at the Georgia War Veterans Home. Born in Abbeville, he was a son of the late Claude A. Winn Sr. and Amy Uldrick Winn. He was a retired manager of Borden Dairies of Macon, a World War II Army veteran and a recipient of the Bronze Star. A member of the Georgia Dairy Association, he was past president of the Georgia Association for Retarded Citizens, a former member of the Macon Cherry Blossom Festival board of directors, and 1980 Parent of the Year for Bibb County. He was of the Baptist faith. Survivors include two daughters, Ann W. Ford and Kathy M. Schwed, both of Macon; two sons, Kenneth Davis Winn and Walter Kevin Winn, both of Macon; three brothers, Thomas Winn, Robert Winn and Jerry Winn, all of Abbeville; four sisters, Sarah Newton of Charleston, Cornelia Winn of Abbeville, Lorraine Edwards of Greenwood, S.C., and Jean Bowden of Salisbury, Md.; and five grandchildren. Services are at 11 a.m. today at Harris Funeral Home, Abbeville, conducted by the Rev. Dr. Howard Whitehurst. Burial is in Greenwood Memorial Gardens. Visitation is from 10-11 today at the funeral home. The family is at the home of a sister, Cornelia Winn, 211 Marshall Ave., Abbeville. George Ernest Addy Jr.
SALUDA — George Ernest Addy Jr., 63, of 218 Arrie Lane, husband of Mary Helen Bradley Addy, died Friday, Jan. 18, 2002.
Born in Saluda County, he was a son of the late George Ernest “Bub” and Viola Leopard Addy. He was a farmer and member of Saluda First Pentecostal Church.
Surviving in addition to his wife of the home is a son, Byron Leslie of Saluda; a daughter, Lisa Hendrix of Saluda; a brother, Carl Addy of Saluda; two sisters, Elizabeth Jester of Ninety Six and Zoe Gambrell of Greenwood and three grandchildren.
Services are at 3 today at Saluda First Pentecostal Church, conducted by the Rev. David Cockrell, the Rev. Larry Smith and the Rev. Hayes Riddle. Burial is in Good Hope Baptist Church Cemetery.
Pallbearers are Tim Bradley, Dana Bradley, James Bradley, Richard Gantt, Richard Eargle, Alvin Norris, Elon Maffett, Randolph Maffett and Charles Jester.
Honorary escorts are the men of Saluda First Pentecostal Church, Bible Believers Church, Faith Temple and Saluda Nursing Center.

HONEA PATH — Luther Mae Mobley “Bunch” Brown, 70, of 1620 Sauer Farm Road, died Saturday, Jan. 19, 2002, at her home.
Born in Lincolnton, Ga., she was a daughter of the late Luther E. and Rosella Poss Mobley. She was retired from Greenwood Mills and was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include a daughter, Rachel Ann Strickland of Honea Path; two sons, Wayne Ashley and Melvin Ashley, both of Abbeville; a brother, Edward “Sam” Mobley of Abbeville; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Visitation is from 6-9 tonight at the home of her daughter, 1618 Sauer Farm Road.

Sallie Johnson
CLINTON — Sallie L. “Granny” DeLoach Johnson, 87, of 102 Beaureguard St., widow of Darling Daniel Johnson, died Friday, Jan. 18, 2002, at the N.H.C. of Clinton.
Born in Saluda County, she was a daughter of the late James A. and Emma Gregory DeLoach. She was retired from Clinton Mills after 40 years of service. She attended the Clinton Pentecostal Fire Baptize Holiness Church.
Survivors include a son, James D. “Junior” Johnson of Clinton; five daughters, Emma Polson, Myrtle Tucker, Jean Woody, Betty Ballew and Sally Gossett, all of Clinton; a brother, Clyde A. DeLoach of Saluda; three sisters, Susie Leopard and Mary Alice Templeton, both of Saluda and Betty Spurlin of Orlando, Fla.; 19 grandchildren; 40 great-grandchildren and 11 great-great-grandchildren.
Services are at 2 Monday at Gray Funeral Home. Burial is in Rosemont Cemetery.
Visitation is at the home of a daughter, Sally Gossett, 205 Beaureguard St. Gray Funeral Home is in charge.

Mittie Kidd
CALHOUN FALLS — Mittie “Shine” Waters Kidd, 90, of McCormick Healthcare Center, widow of Albert Marcus Kidd, died Saturday, Jan. 19, 2002, at Abbeville County Memorial Hospital.
Born in Lowndesville, she was a daughter of the late John and Rosa Powell Waters. She was a retired spinner in the textile industry and a member of the Calhoun Falls Pentecostal Holiness Church and the Ladies Auxiliary. She was a Calhoun Falls Past Personality of the Year recipient.
Survivors include three sons, A.M. Kidd of Calhoun Falls, Ray Kidd of Greenwood and Ronnie Kidd of McCormick; two daughters, Faye Smith and Nancy Youngblood, both of Elberton, Ga.; 16 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren.
Services are at 2 today at the Pentecostal Holiness Church, conducted by the Rev. Lawrence Johnson and the Rev. Vergil Manning. Burial is in Forest Lawn Memory Gardens in Abbeville.
Visitation was last night from 7-9 at the Calhoun Falls Funeral Home.

William J. Poore
GREENWOOD — William Jackson “Jack” Poore, 73, of 2604 Edgefield St., husband of Christel R. Poore, died Friday, Jan. 18, 2002, at Self Regional Healthcare.
Born in Ninety Six, he was a son of the late Frank E. and Pauline Childs Poore. He was a former manager with Rhodes Furniture.
Surviving in addition to his wife of the home is a son, Gary N. Poore of Anderson; a daughter, Gayle P. McLaurin of Greer; a stepson, Leamon J.
“Chip” Willrett of Atlanta; four sisters, Grace Boozer of Ninety Six, Frankie Higginbotham of Elberton, Ga., Dixie Fernandez of North Augusta and Jean Greenway of Greenwood; a brother, Clyde “Eddy” Poore of Augusta, Ga.; three grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Graveside services are at 4 today at Elmwood Cemetery in Ninety Six, conducted by the Rev. Milton Stubblefield and the Rev. Harvey Peurifoy.
Pallbearers are nephews.
The family is at the home.

DETROIT — Services for Lillie Bell Adams Wiggleton will be at 1 Monday at The Tranquil A.M.E. Church in Troy, conducted by the Rev. Derrick Scott, assisted by Bobby Chiles and Rosa Chiles. Burial is in the church cemetery.
