Mary E. Hatfield
SALUDA — Mary Louise Edwards Hatfield, 58, formerly of Travis Avenue, died Friday, Jan. 25, 2002.
Born in Saluda County, she was a daughter of the late James Lawton and Nannie Mae Bledsoe Edwards. She was a former employee of Monsanto and a member of Saluda Baptist Church. Survivors include nieces and nephews.
Graveside services are at 3 Wednesday in Red Bank Baptist Church Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to the American Red Cross.
Ramey Funeral Home is in charge.

Bernice Etheredge Hill
SALUDA — Bernice Etheredge Hill, 54, of 385 Old Gassaway Road, wife of Archie Hill Sr., died Saturday, Jan. 26, 2002, at Self Regional Medical Center in Greenwood.
Born in Saluda County, she was a daughter of the late Neddie M. and Ruth Long Etheredge. She was a member of Bethlehem Baptist Church, where she was a former member of the Gospel Choir and the Inspirational Choir. A retired employee of Knight’s Industries, she was a member of the Women Home Aide Society and Riverside High School Class of 1967.
Survivors include her husband of Saluda; two sons, James Hill of Saluda and Archie Hill Jr. of Edgefield; two daughters, Anissa Hill of Charlotte, N.C., and Clarese Robinson of Saluda; a brother, Bennie Etheredge of Saluda; four sisters, Virginia Foulks, Shirleen McCarty and Linda Hill, all of Saluda and Joyce McElveen of West Columbia; and seven grandchildren.
Services are at 2 Wednesday at Bethlehem Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Calvin Robinson, pastor. The body will be placed in the church at 1. Family and friends will assemble at the home at 1:15. Burial is in the church cemetery.
Pallbearers are family friends, and flower bearers are nieces.
Butler & Sons Funeral Home is in charge.

M.C. Kelley
ABBEVILLE — M.C. Kelley, 85, of 101 Lemon St., widower of Mabel Wheeler Kelley, died Monday, Jan. 28, 2002, at his home.
Born in Talking Rock, Ga., he was a son of the late Mack Daniel and Anthia Lowe Kelley. He was a retired railroad conductor with CSX Railroad, a Shriner, a Mason and a member of Clinton Lodge No. 3 AFM. He was a member and former officer of the Brotherhood of Trainmen.
Survivors include two daughters, Emilie K. Lesesne of Due West and Mildred K. Howard of Columbia; a son, Mike Kelley of Palm Bay, Fla.; seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Graveside services are at 3 Wednesday in Forest Lawn Memory Gardens.
The family is at the home of a daughter, Emilie Lesesne, 226 Main St., Due West.
Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society chapter of one’s choice.

Laurena Orr
WARE SHOALS — Laurena Eve Orr, 25, wife of James Anthony “Tony” Orr, died Sunday, Jan. 27, 2002, from injuries received in an auto accident.
Survivors include her husband of the home; a son, James Alexander “Alex” Orr of Ware Shoals; and her mother, Laura Jackson of Griffin, Ga.
Services are 2 p.m. Friday at the Warren Haisten Memorial Chapel, Griffin, with burial in Oak Hill Cemetery.
Visitation is from 7-9 Thursday at the funeral home.
Haisten Woodlawn Funeral Home, Griffin, Ga., is in charge.

Margaret Holloway Smith
EDGEFIELD — Margaret Holloway Smith, 63, of 311 Augusta Road, died Saturday, Jan. 26, 2002. Born in Edgefield County, she was a member of Republican Grove Baptist Church, where she served as a church secretary and an usher.
Survivors include a son, Wilson Smith Jr. of Edgefield; a daughter, Aileen Smith of Edgefield; three sisters, Afterleen McCollough of Edgefield, Mrs. Johnny (Mary) Burt and Mrs. George (Deloris) McCall, both of Ohio; two brothers, A.B. Holloway of Edgefield and Walter Holloway of Mount Pleasant; and a granddaughter.
Services are at 3 Thursday at Republican Grove Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Willie Patten. Burial is in the church cemetery.
Visitation is at the home.
G.L. Brightharp & Sons Mortuary is in charge.

Rev. William Charles "Smitty" Smith
DILLON - Services for Rev. William Charles "Smitty" Smith, Jr. will be held Sunday at 3:00 P.M. in the Dillon First Presbyterian Church with burial in Evergreen Cemetery. Visitation will be held at the residence, 1010 Jewell Court.
Rev. Smith, 74, died Thursday in McLeod Regional Medical Center.
Born in Hamlet, NC, July 12, 1927, he was the son of the late William Charles and Addie Smith. He was a retired Presbyterian minister. He graduated from Columbia Seminary with a masters degree in theology, and he was a coach and high school teacher in Gilbert, Lancaster, Florence, Aynor, Bishopville, and Manning. He pastored churches in Summerton, Abbeville, Greenwood, Kingsport, TN, Greer, and Dillon. He was a member of the Harmony Palmetto Presbytery. He was a navy veteran of World War II having participated in 7 invasions in the Pacific.
Survivors include his wife, Elsie Modlin Smith of Dillon; sons, Charles Richard Smith of Pawleys Island and Michael William Smith of Gaffney; daughters-in-law, Marilyn and Karen; sisters, Allene Allen of Laurinburg, NC and Catherine Wyand of Rockingham, N.C.
Memorials may be made to the Dillon Camp of Gideons, P.O. Box 111, Dillon, S.C. 29536 or the Hospice of Pee Dee, 556 East Cheves Street, Florence, S.C. 29501.

Steve Caldwell
ATLANTA, GA - Steve Caldwell, 55, of Atlanta, GA and Destin, FL and formerly of Greenwood, SC, died January 28, 2002. He was a prominent businessman in Atlanta for 30 years in the personnel and software industries. Mr. Caldwell served on several national and state boards, was a member of Northside United Methodist Church. He was one of the original members of the "Swingin' Medallions" band and the hit record "Doubleshot" in 1966.
Mr. Caldwell is survived by his wife Lynn Caldwell; daughters, Alison Tout, Suwanee; Angela Claiborne, Atlanta; Julia Viands, Savannah; son Steven Caldwell, Jr., Atlanta; sisters, Susan Rivers, Roswell; Edith Gross, Simpsonville, SC; brother Earl Caldwell III, Charleston, SC and grandchild, Mattison Tout, Suwanee.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, January 31, 2002, at 1:30 p.m., placed in state at 12:30 p.m. at Northside United Methodist Church. Dr. Gil Watson officiating.
Interment, Arlington Memorial Park. Memorial contributions may be made to World Methodist Evangelism, Scarritt-Bennett Center, 1008 19th Avenue South, Nashville, TN 37212-2166.
The family will receive friends this evening from 7 p.m. until 9 p.m. at Sandy Springs Chapel Funeral Directors, 136 Mt. Vernon Hwy.

Oscar L. Conway Jr.
NINETY SIX — Services for Oscar Leroan Conway Jr., of 410 Edgewood Circle, are at 1 Thursday at Zion Hill Baptist Church, Cross Hill, conducted by the Rev. Johnny P. Caldwell. The body will be placed in the church at noon. Burial is in the church cemetery.
Pallbearers and flower bearers are cousins and friends.
The family is at the home and at 113 Peachtree St., Greenwood.

William ‘Bill’ McJunkin
HONEA PATH — William “Bill” Dickard McJunkin, 81, of 9 Devore Lane, husband of Audrina McDonald McJunkin, died Sunday, Jan. 27, 2002, at Anderson Area Medical Center.
Born in Pickens County, he was a son of the late Robert and Essie Dickard McJunkin. He was a member and usher of Honea Path First Baptist Church and president of T.E. Jones and Son Furniture, Honea Path, for 50 years. He was a member of Honea Path Lions Club and Woodman of the World.
Survivors include his wife of the home; a son, Boyce McJunkin of Greenville; a brother, Folger McJunkin of Hendersonville, N.C.; three sisters, Irene Whitmire and Lois Rhymer, both of Greenville and Edith Parker of Greenwood; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Services are at 11 a.m. today at Honea Path First Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Mike Moody and the Rev. Booker Bagby. The body will be placed in the church at 10. Entombment is in Hillcrest Memorial Gardens, Pickens.
The family is at the home.

Laurena Orr
WARE SHOALS - Laurena Eve Orr, 25, of Ware Shoals, wife of James Anthony "Tony" Orr, died Sunday, January 27, 2002 from injuries received in an automobile accident.
Surviving is her husband of the home; a son, James Alexander "Alex" Orr of Ware Shoals; and her mother, Laura Jackson of Griffin, GA.

The family will receive friends at Haisten Woodlawn Funeral Home, Griffin, GA on Thursday, January 31, from 7 to 9 p.m.

Estoria A. Phillips
ABBEVILLE — Estoria Anderson Phillips, of 25 Oaklawn Drive, Taylor Town Community, widow of Roy Phillips, died Tuesday, Jan. 29, 2002, at Self Regional Medical Center in Greenwood.
Born in Abbeville County, she was a daughter of the late James and Iva Lee Jackson Anderson. She was a homemaker and a member of Fairfield Baptist Church.
Survivors include six sons, Dr. Dale Phillips, Curtis E. Phillips and Christopher E. Phillips, all of Abbeville, Stanley Phillips of Greenwood, Calvin L. Phillips of Lithonia, Ga., and Roy M. Phillips of Las Vegas; two daughters, Brenda P. Anderson of Abbeville and Elaine Phillips of Greenwood; four foster children, Lashonda Jones, April Lee, Dashonda Lee and Marcus Lee; two brothers, Nathaniel Anderson of Greer and James Tate of Abbeville; three sisters, Clotell Anderson of Abbeville and Lillian Sibert and Parnese Hill, both of Greenville; 16 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
The family is at the home.
Services will be announced by Brown and Walker Funeral Home, which is in charge.

Willie Mae Wharton
ABBEVILLE — Willie Mae Wharton, 81, of Woodview Lane, Apt. 21, died Monday, Jan. 28, 2002, at Abbeville County Memorial Hospital.
Born in Abbeville, she was a daughter of the late Willie and Essie Jones Lee. She was a member of St. Peter A.M.E. Church.
Survivors include two daughters, Geneva Dunlap and Frances Spencer, both of Abbeville; a son, Willie Lee of Jamaica, N.Y.; a brother, John T. Bell of Abbeville, four sisters, Carrie Lee, Viola Wharton, Maggie Pressley and Lizzie Johnson, all of Abbeville; 16 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren.
The family is at the home of a daughter, Geneva Dunlap, 57 Oaklawn Drive, Taylor Town Community.
Services will be announced by Richie Funeral Home, which is in charge.
