Born in Greenwood to Peggy W. Patrick and James Wood, he died Nov. 10, 2004. Surviving: wife, Tammy Wood; parents; stepfather, Bo Patrick; stepmother, Leyla Wood; sons, Stephen, Brandon Wood; siblings.

Dean Sauls

BALLENTINE — Services for Mildred Dean Sauls, 68, of Ballentine, will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, November 11, 2004, at Westside Holiness Church, officiated by Rev. J.E. Jeffcoat, with burial in Greenlawn Memorial Park. Memorials may be made to Westside Holiness Church, Helping Hand, 527 Augusta Street, West Columbia, SC 29169. Thompson Funeral Home of West Columbia is handling arrangements.

Mrs. Sauls, widow of Shellie H. Sauls, died Tuesday, November 9, 2004. Born in Pelion, she was a daughter of the late Lucius and Vila Chavis Jeffcoat. Mrs. Sauls, a lifetime resident, was a member of Westside Holiness Church.

Surviving are her daughters, Patti Kobliski of Blythewood, Elaine Thomas of Irmo, Jackie Bruce of Gaston, Dawn Tarlton of Gilbert, Deidra Livingston of West Columbia; son, McRoy Sauls of Birmingham, AL; sisters, Lenora Chavis of Columbia, Brenda Hill of Gaston; brothers, Thurmond Jeffcoat of West Columbia, Dillard Jeffcoat of Gaston, Rev. J.E. Jeffcoat of Cayce, Maxie Jeffcoat of Gaston; grandchildren, Jamie Brindel, 2nd Lt. Josh Brindel, Jack Brindel, Sheldon Salas, Robbie Collins, Chrissie Collins, Blaire Kobliski, Shellie Sauls; and great grandchildren, Brittany, Tiffany, Sheldon, Shellie and Brent.

Mrs. Sauls was predeceased by a daughter, Deborah Lynn Sauls; a sister, Sylvia Brazell; and brothers, Alvin, Ronnie and Rudy Jeffcoat.

MARIETTA — A graveside service for Gail Pitts Orr, 58, widow of Donald Orr, will be held at 11 a.m. Friday in Graceland West Cemetery. Visitation is 6:30-8 tonight at The Howze Mortuary, Travelers Rest. Born in Greenville Co. to Garnett and Kathryn Huff Pitts, she died Nov. 8, 2004. She had retired from Southern Weaving. Surviving: daughter, Joanna Orr; brothers, Randall, Kenneth Pitts; grandchild, Isabella Orr.

Benjamin Alston

GEORGETOWN — Services for Benjamin Alston, 76, will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Bethel AME Church, Plantersville Community, with burial in Bethel AME Church Cemetery. Wilds’ Daughter Home for Funerals is in charge. Born in Georgetown to Robert and Doretha Walker Alston, he died November 8, 2004. He was a brick maker. Surviving are sisters, Lillie Singleton and Adelle Pearson.

Russell Ballard

CHARLOTTE — Services for Russell Lee Ballard, 95, widower of Lucille Ballard, will be held at 2 p.m. Friday (1 p.m. visitation) at Westmoreland Baptist Church; burial: Forest Lawn Cemetery. McEwen Funeral Home is in charge. Born in Lincoln Co., NC to Austin and Georgia Norwood Ballard, he died Nov. 10, 2004. Surviving are children, Verlene Paxton, Rev. Cecil Ballard; brother, Wayne; grandchildren; great-grandchildren.

James Boatwright Jr.

JOHNSTON — Mr. James Ernest Boatwright, Jr., 82, of McQueen St., died Tuesday November 9, 2004, at his residence.

A Memorial Service will be held at the Johnston Methodist Church at 3 p.m. on Friday November 12. The family will receive friends at the home following the service.

Mr. Boatwright was the son of the late James Ernest Boatwright, Sr. and the late Harriett Graham Boatwright. He was born in Monetta, S.C. and attended Sewanee and The Citadel. He was a retired Realtor and retired from the U.S. Postal Service. He was a WWII veteran, a member of The American Legion Post #133 and a 32nd Degree Mason. He was a member of the Johnston Sertoma Club and a member of the Johnston United Methodist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Eddie Boatwright; 2 sons, Jim Boatwright, Charleston, and George Boatwright, Cave Creek, AZ; 2 stepdaughters, Ellen Courtney, Johnston, Sally Faust, Edgefield; 1 sister, Averill B. Courtney, Johnston; 1 brother, Philips Boatwright, Ridge Spring; and 3 grandchildren and 4 stepgrandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Johnston United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 186, Johnston, SC 29832.

Edgefield Mercantile Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Jake Bookhard

WALTERBORO — Services with burial for Jake “Junior” Bookhard, 61, widower of “Peggy” Bookhard, are 2 p.m. today at Mount Olive AME Church, Smoaks. Hamilton’s Funeral Home is in charge. Born in Orangeburg Co. to Jake Bookhard Sr. and Eartha Lee Wright, he died Nov. 5, 2004. Surviving: mother; children, Doris, Clarence, Sammy Bookhard, Dorothy Wiggins, Virgil Wright; 2 sisters; 4 brothers.

Emily Bruce

CAMDEN — Funeral services for Emily Langley Bruce, 65, will be held on Friday, November 12, 2004, at 2:00 p.m. at Mt. Olivet Baptist Church with burial to follow in the church cemetery. Rev. Steve Lee will officiate. The family will receive friends on Thursday, November 11, 2004, from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at Kornegay Funeral Home Camden Chapel. Memorials may be made to Mt. Olivet Baptist Church, 608 Black River Road, Camden, SC 29020.

Mrs. Bruce died Wednesday, November 10, 2004. Born in Camden, she was the daughter of the late Barney and Mattie Ruth Copeland Langley. Mrs. Bruce retired as the Activities Director of the A. Sam Karesh Longterm Care facility at Kershaw County Medical Center, past president of the Pilot Club and a member of Mt. Olivet Baptist Church.

Surviving are her husband, Alex Bruce; children, Cheryl B. Lee and her husband, Patrick, of Orangeburg, Robert Phillip Bruce of Boynton Beach, FL, and Jon Bruce and his wife, Gina, of York; grandchildren, Jason and his wife, Jessica, and Rebecca Lee, Jonathan Bruce, II, Ryan Bruce, Alex and Darby Bruce; sisters, Margie Rabon of Lugoff, and Brenda Stevens of Camden. She was predeceased by a daughter, Sonya Bruce, 3 brothers and 2 sisters.

George Fricks Sr.

COLUMBIA — Services for George W. Fricks, Sr., 88, will be held Saturday at 12 noon at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, with entombment in Greenlawn Memorial Park Mausoleum. Visitation will be 11-12 prior to the service at the funeral home. Honorary pallbearers will be former Gov. James B. Edwards and Col. George D. Patterson, U.S. Army (Ret.). Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association or a charity of one’s choice.

Mr. Fricks died Tuesday, November 9, 2004. Born in Rossville, Ga., he was the son of the late George Alex and May Roberts McFarland Fricks. He was a graduate of Berry College in Rome, Ga., and received his Masters degree from Peabody College in Nashville, TN. He worked with the Civilian Conservation Corp (C.C.C.), and was a Chief Petty Officer in the Navy during WWII. Former Governor Strom Thurmond bestowed upon him the title, “Honorary Colonel.”

Mr. Fricks was the first principal at Columbia Area Trade School, now Midlands Technical College. He retired from the Charleston County School District as principal of Stall High School. He was a lifetime member of Sinclair Masonic Lodge #154, West Columbia, and was a member of Omar Shrine Temple in Charleston. He was a member of Asbury Memorial United Methodist Church.

An avid gardener, he had a keen interest in plants and wildlife. A loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend, he will be dearly missed by all who knew him.

Surviving are his wife of 49 years, Ruby McLeod Fricks; son, George W. Fricks, Jr. and his wife, Gail of Chapin; grandchildren, Tammy Wilson Barnes and her husband Andy of Lexington, and Jessica Wilson of Philadelphia, PA.; and great-grandchildren, Kaylee and Riley Barnes. He was predeceased by a sister, Mary Kathryn Bradley, and half-sister, Jewel Rudicil.

SUMTER — Graveside service for Jim Henry Galloway, 73, retired painter, widower of Helen Parrish Galloway, 4 p.m. Friday in Green Acres Cemetery. Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home and Crematory is in charge. Born in Sumter to Joseph and Elease Ward Galloway, he died Nov. 6, 2004. Surviving are sisters, Sallie Barkley, Margie Geddings, Frances Thurston; stepdaughter, Misty Parrish; nieces; nephews.

ROCK HILL — Services for William Rayford Harris, 73, veteran 2 p.m. Friday (1 p.m. visitation) at Grace Church of the Nazarene. Born in Rock Hill to Ray and Thelma Smith Harris, he died Nov. 10, 2004. Surviving: wife, Alene S. Harris; sons, David, Joel; stepchildren, Randall Horne, Rita Fowler; sisters, Betty Collins, Gloria Shillinglaw, Shirley Smith; grandchildren; great-grands, stepgrands, stepgreat-grand.

Allison Green

GEORGETOWN — A memorial service for Allison Green, 64, will be held at 5 p.m. today at Wilds’ Daughter Home for Funerals. Born in McClellanville to Anthony and Lillian Green Singleton, she died November 6, 2004. She attended Singleton AME Church. Surviving are sisters, Erma Lawrence, Elizabeth Sullivan, Vermell Langford, Mary Alice Bryant and Margaret Singleton.

Betty McIntire

GREENWOOD — A graveside service for Betty W. McIntire, 73, widow of John McIntire, will be 2 p.m. Saturday in Greenwood Memorial Gardens. Visitation is 7-9 p.m. Friday at the home of her brother-in-law and sister, Dr. Jack and Marion Tinney. Born in Honea Path to Carl and Grace Taylor Wrenn, she died Nov. 10, 2004. Surviving: son, H. Michael Lane; sister, Marion Tinney; brother, C.E. “Buddy” Wrenn.

Phyllis McKie

NORTH AUGUSTA — Services for Phyllis McKie, 66, 2 pm Friday: First Baptist Church, where she was a Pre-school S.S. teacher for 35 years; burial: Pineview Memorial Park; visitation 5-8 tonight: Rowland Funeral Home. Born in Saluda Co., she was a graduate of Anderson College, attended Erskine College and taught at Our Lady of Peace for 17 years. Surviving: mother, Doris Odom; husband, Henry; son, Tony.

LAURENS — Services with burial for Kenneth Frank Ward, 27, will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Mt. Moriah Baptist Church, Clinton. Goins Funeral Home is in charge. Born in Laurens Co. to Clarence and Lillie McGee Ward, he died November 6, 2004.
