Vaneria Summer
CHAPPELLS — Lessie Vaneria Summer, 81, of Chappells, widow of Jennings Summer, died Sunday, Feb. 17, 2002.
Born in Chapin, she was a daughter of the late Louie Franklin and Lillie Lessie Lura Wessinger Long. She was a member of Chappells Baptist Church.
Survivors include two sons, Everett C. Summer and Carroll D. Summer, both of Chappells; a daughter, Cereta Tinsley of Kinards; a sister, Elizabeth Graham of Pomaria; three brothers, John Noah Long, Eugene Long and Hubert Long, all of Chapin; three grandchildren; a step-grandchild; a great-grandchild and three step-great-grandchildren.
Services are at 11 Tuesday at Chappells Baptist Church. Burial is in the church cemetery.
Visitation is from 7-8 tonight at McSwain-Evans Funeral Home.
Memorials may be made to Presbyterian Home, 801 Musgrove St., Clinton S.C. 29325.

Sallie E. Wright
GREENWOOD — Sallie Wright, 88, of NHC 437 East Cambridge Ave., widow of Willie S. Wright, died Saturday, Feb. 16, 2002, at her home.
Born in McCormick County, she was a daughter of the late Wence and Salli Payton Lyons. She was a member of Glovers Chapel Baptist Church, where she served as Deaconess and was a member of the Missionary Society, Senior Choir and Willing Workers Club. She was also Secretary of Sample Street Community Club.
Survivors include a son, Willie Wright Jr. of Philadelphia; four daughters, Alice Wideman and Carrie Murray, both of Greenwood, Sallie Edwards of Greenville and Hattie McClelland of Philadelphia; two sisters, Rosanne Wright of Abbeville and Mary Childs of Greenville; 20 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren and 6 great-great-grandchildren.
The family is at the home of a daughter, Alice Wideman, 210 Booker St.
Services will be announced by Percival-Tompkins Funeral Home, which is in charge.

Clara Cooper
NINETY SIX — Services for Clara Jacobs Cooper, of 4406 Highway 246 S., are at 2 Thursday at Old Mount Zion Baptist Church, Epworth, conducted by the Rev. Clyde Cannon. The body will be placed in the church at 1. Burial is in the church cemetery.
Pallbearers are church trustees.
Flower bearers are members of the church Missionary Society.
Honorary escorts are church deacons and members of Saluda Highway Community Club and the Pastor Aid Club.
Visitation is from 7-8 Wednesday at the home of Effie Nicholson, 4410 Highway 246, Ninety Six.

Mitzi Dale Hawkins
PROSPERITY — Mitzi Dale Hawkins, 47, died Sunday, Feb. 17, 2002, at Self Regional Medical Center in Greenwood.
Born in Prosperity, she was a daughter of Virgie Koon Hawkins and the late Robert Carroll Hawkins. She was a member of St. Luke’s Lutheran Church.
Survivors include her mother of Newberry; three sisters, Mary H. Pierce of Maine, Linda H. Messer of Alabama and Betty H. Lominick of Pomaria; and a brother, Robert K. Hawkins of Greenwood.
Graveside services are at 11 a.m. Wednesday in St. Luke’s Lutheran Church Cemetery, conducted by the Rev. Arden Hallman.
Visitation is from 7-8 tonight at McSwain-Evans Funeral Home.
Memorials may be made to St. Luke’s Lutheran Church Cemetery Fund, 4056 St. Luke’s Church Road, Prosperity, S.C. 29127.

R.A. Johnson
GREENWOOD — R.A. “Pop” Johnson, 80, of 110 Patrick Road, husband of Ernestine Smith Breland Johnson, died Sunday, Feb. 17, 2002, at his home.
Born in Norris, he was a son of the late Rufus Albert and Leona Owen Johnson. He was a retired building contractor, a World War II Army veteran and a member of Lodge No. 4 A.F.M. and Hyde Park Baptist Church. He was twice married, first to the late Roma Burns Johnson.
Survivors include his wife of the home; a son, Marty Johnson of the home; two daughters, Nancy Clary of Greenwood and Karen Darmer of Charlotte, N.C.; two stepsons, Walter Breland of Lodge and Joe Breland of Bamberg; two stepdaughters, Elaine Bryan of Denmark, S.C., and Darlene Cook of Barnwell; a sister, Willie Flowers of Jackson; a brother, Cecil Johnson of Hanahan; nine grandchildren, 10 step-grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and five step-great-grandchildren.
Graveside services are at 4 today in Greenwood Memorial Gardens, conducted by the Rev. Barry Morehead and the Rev. Tommy Thurston.
Pallbearers are Russell Cook, Roy Bryan, Kasey Johnson, Drew Darmer, Jimmy Clary Jr. and Jeff Clary.
Visitation is from 2:30-3:30 today at Harley Funeral Home.
The family is at the home.
Memorials may be made to HospiceCare of the Piedmont, 408 W. Alexander Ave., Greenwood, S.C. 29646.

GREENWOOD — Helen Mayer Landis, 97, of 1110 Marshall Road, widow of Gerald W. Landis, died Monday, Feb. 18, 2002, at Wesley Commons.
Services will be announced by Blyth Funeral Home, which is in charge.

Rufus ‘Sport’ Tolbert Sr.
GREENWOOD — Rufus “Sport” Tolbert Sr., 81, of Wesley Commons, formerly of 246˝ Mineral St., husband of Gladys Herman Tolbert, died Sunday, Feb. 17, 2002, at Self Regional Medical Center.
Born in McCormick, he was a son of the late Barksdale and Charlotte Turner. He was a retiree of Greenwood City Sanitation Department, a World War II Navy veteran and a Mason. He was of the Methodist faith.
Survivors include his wife of Philadelphia; two sons, Rufus Tolbert Jr. of Jacksonville, Fla., and James Calhoun of Greenwood; a daughter, Earthy Tolbert of Philadelphia; three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Services will be announced by Robinson & Son Mortuary Inc., which is in charge.

Lillie M. Wilburn
NAPERVILLE, Ill. — Lillie Maude Wilburn, 87, widow of David J. Wilburn, died Sunday, Feb. 17, 2002, at a Naperville hospital.
Born in Greenwood County, S.C., she was a daughter of the late Robert H. and Lugenia Watson Bradley. She was a member of St. James A.M.E. Church, Abbeville, S.C., where she was a trustee and a member of the Sunday School, Bible Class and Missionary Society Gem of Love. A retired teacher, she served in the McCormick County, S.C., school system for more than 35 years.
Survivors include a son, Kenneth Wilburn of Naperville and two grandchildren.
The family is at the home of Mrs. Josie Davis, 970 Old Abbeville Highway.
Services will be announced by Brown and Walker Funeral Home, Abbeville, S.C., which is in charge.

Sallie E. Wright
GREENWOOD — Services for Sallie E. Wright, of 437 E. Cambridge Ave., formerly of 117 Sample St., will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at Glovers Chapel A.M.E. Church, McCormick, conducted by the Rev. M.L. Taylor, assisted by the Revs. Norris Turner, Herman Lyons and Johnny Waller. Burial is in the church cemetery. The body will be placed in the church at noon.
Pallbearers are grandsons, and flower bearers are granddaughters.
Visitation is at 117 Sample St.
Percival-Tompkins Funeral Home is in charge.

William Gordon Gray
CROSS HILL — William Gordon Gray, 89, formerly of Highway 39, husband of Elizabeth Gaston Gray, died Monday, Feb. 18, 2002, at National Health Care of Clinton.
Born in Spartanburg County, he was a son of the late William Gordon Gray Sr. and Pauline Turner Gray. He was a farmer, an auto mechanic, a member of Liberty Springs Presbyterian Church and a World War II Army veteran who was awarded the Bronze Service Star.
Survivors include his wife of Clinton; two daughters, Frances G. Simpson and Margaret G. Lanford, both of Cross Hill; six grandchildren and a great-grandchild.
Graveside services are 11 a.m. Thursday in Liberty Springs Presbyterian Church Cemetery.
Family members are at their respective homes.
Memorials may be made to the Disabled American Veterans, 1801 Assembly St., Suite 129, Columbia, S.C. 29201.

Mary Henry
NEWBERRY — Mary H. Henry, 90, formerly of 2405 Main St., died Tuesday, Feb. 19, 2002, at the Regional Medical Center in Orangeburg.
Born in Ridgeland, she was a daughter of the late Rev. Walter S. and Mamie McGraw Henry. She retired as a public high school teacher in Greenwood County and was a member of Central United Methodist Church.
She was the last member of her immediate family.
Graveside services are 11 a.m. Thursday in Rosemont Cemetery, Newberry.
Memorials may be made to Central United Methodist Church.

Helen Landis
NINETY SIX — Helen Mayer Landis, 97, of Mayland Farm, 1907 Tillman Territory Road, widow of Gerald W. Landis, died Monday, Feb. 18, 2002, at Wesley Commons in Greenwood.
Born in Newberry County, she was a daughter of the late Jacob Luther and Sue Ida Bouknight Mayer. She was a Greenwood High School graduate and a 1926 graduate of Lander College. She taught in the public schools of Moncks Corner and Plant City, Fla., and retired as field director of the Old Ninety Six Council of Girl Scouts. In retirement, she owned and operated Mayland Farm Ceramic Shop for many years. A member of Immanuel Lutheran Church and the Ella Julian Circle of the church, she was former president of the Women of the Church and taught in the Adult Sunday School Department. She was also a member of the Greenwood Pilot Club.
Survivors include a daughter, Dr. Jacqueline L. Haymond of Clemson; a son, James L. Landis of Hilton Head; a sister, Margaret M. Gasper of Florence; five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Services are at 3 today at Immanuel Lutheran Church, conducted by the Rev. John Setzler. The body will be placed in the church at 2. Entombment is in Oakbrook Memorial Park Mausoleum.
Pallbearers are Randy Davis, Jimmy Davis, Tate Haymond, Luke Haymond, Bill Kinney, Bob Warner, James Ferqueron, Steve Bates, Justin Bates, Bill Thompson and Kevin Logeais.
Visitation is in the church social hall from 2-3 today.
The family is at the home.
Memorials may be made to the Old Ninety Six Council of Girl Scouts, P.O. Box 1227, Mauldin, S.C. 29662.

Obediah Ligon
HODGES — Obediah Ligon, 97, of 220 Miller Road, died Sunday, Feb. 17, 2002, at Self Regional Medical Center in Greenwood.
Born in Hodges, he was a son of the late James Josh and Betty Wood Ligon. He was a member of Cokesbury Baptist Church and a retired farmer.
Survivors include a son, James Ligon of the home; a daughter, Willie L. McIntosh of Dayton, Ohio; seven grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
Services are 11:30 a.m. Thursday at Percival-Tompkins Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. Otis Cunningham, assisted by Dr. Amos Harling and Bishop Emanuel Spearman.
Pallbearers and flower bearers are grandsons and granddaughters.
Visitation is from 6:30-8 tonight at the funeral home.
The family is at the home.

Eleanor C. McNeill
NINETY SIX - Eleanor Jessie Cosby McNeill, 86, of 102 Cateechee Avenue, widow of Andrew Boyce McNeill, died Monday, February 18, 2002 at Western Wake Medical Center, Cary, NC.
Born in Washington , GA, she was a daughter of the late George Howard and Odessa Maxwell Cosby. She had been a long time employee of Parrish Pharmacy and was a very active member of St. Paul United Methodist Church.
Surviving is her son and daughter-in-law, Andrew B. McNeill, Jr. and Janet Boone McNeill of Morrisville, NC and three grandchildren, Christopher McNeill of Austin, TX, Andrea McNeill and Tara McNeill, both of Morrisville, NC.
Services will be at 3 p.m. Friday at the Harley Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Ben Herlong officiating. Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Friday from 2 to 3 p.m.
Memorials may be made to St. Paul United Methodist Church, 301 N. Cambridge Street, Ninety Six, SC 29666.
