Funeral services for Thelma Winburn West, 73, will be held at 3:00 p.m. Thursday, August 26, 2010 at Gum Branch Baptist Church. The Rev. Jeff Gardner will officiate with burial in Magnolia Cemetery. Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home is serving the family. The family will receive friends Wednesday, August 25, 2010 from 5 until 7 p.m. at the funeral home. Mrs. West, widow of Charles Lewis West, died Monday, August 23, 2010. Born in Kershaw Co., SC, she was a daughter of the late Sam and Anna Harrell Winburn. She was a member of Gum Branch Baptist Church and the Darlington County Handicapped Chapter. She had a love of flowers and she greatly loved her independence. Surviving are her daughter and son-in-law, Wendy W. (Don) Watkins of Hartsville, SC; sister and brother-in-law, Betty (Barnice) Turner of Cheraw, SC; brothers and sisters-in-law, Rev. Billy (Valerie) Winburn of Elgin, SC, Johnny (Ruby) Winburn of Bishopville, SC, James Allen (Patricia) Winburn of Bishopville, SC; grandchildren, Joseph Michael Watkins, Nicole Lee Melton; great-grandchild, Cory Melton.

Deward Brittain

September 26th, 1920 - August 24th, 2010

Funeral services for Deward Belmont Brittain, 89, will be held at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, August 26, 2010 at St. Bartholomew's Episcopal Church Memory Garden. Fr. Michael Ridgill will officiate and Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home is serving the family. The family will receive friends Wednesday, August 25, 2010 from 4-6 p.m. at the residence, 517 Segars Mill Rd. Memorials may be made to a charity of one’s choice. Mr. Brittain died Tuesday, August 24, 2010. Born in Spartanburg Co., SC, he was a son of the late Vaughan DeWitt and Elizabeth Ramsey Brittain. Deward was a graduate of the University of South Carolina and served during World War II as a naval officer in the Pacific. He was Managing Editor of the Rock Hill Evening Herald from 1946-1953. He retired from Owens-Illinois in 1978 and also retired as President of Palmetto Packaging Corp. in 1990. He was a member and former Senior Warden of St. Bartholomew's Episcopal Church. He was a former member of the Coker College Board of Trustees, the Board of Trustees of the Episcopal Church Home for Children in York, and the Still Hopes Retirement Home in Columbia. Surviving is his wife, Sloan Hungerpiller Brittain of Hartsville, SC.

Carley Vance

July 17th, 1922 - August 26th, 2010

Graveside services for Colwell “Carley” Vance, 88, will be held at 10:00 p.m. Saturday, August 28, 2010 at Westview Memorial Park Cemetery. The Rev. Ed Griggs will officiate and Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home is serving the family. The family will receive friends Friday from 5-7 p.m. at Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Wesley United Methodist Church, 145 East College Avenue, Hartsville, SC 29550 or to a charity of one’s choice. Mr. Vance, widower of Ethel Elgin Vance, his wife of 65 years, died Thursday, August 26, 2010. Born in Lillington, NC, he was a son of the late William and Delilah Wester Vance. He attended Apex and Greenledge High Schools. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U. S. Navy as a gunner mate and later on a patrol craft in Panama. He was employed by Carolina Power & Light for 37 years and retired as a sub-station maintenance foreman. Mr. Vance was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church and was a wonderful neighbor and good friend to all, willing to help in any way he could. Surviving are his son and daughter-in-law, Mike and Ray Vance of Hartsville, SC; grandchildren (spouse), Michael (Amber) Vance of Hartsville, SC, M. T. Vance of Florence, SC; great-grandson, Jackson Vance who was a delight.

Barney F. Timmons

September 9th, 1920 - August 28th, 2010

Graveside services for Dr. Barney Foreman Timmons, nearly 90, will be held at 4:00 p.m. Sunday, August 29, 2010 at Magnolia Cemetery. A memorial service to honor his life will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, August 31, 2010 at Southminster Retirement Community, 8919 Park Road, Charlotte, NC. Dr. Barney Foreman Timmons died in the early morning of Saturday August 28, 2010. Born in Florence County, SC, on September 9, 1920, he was a son of the late George Leland and Warner Hair Timmons. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First Baptist Church, 104 East Home Avenue, Hartsville, SC 29550 or Southminster Retirement Community, 8919 Park Road, Charlotte, NC. He was a member of First Baptist Church and served as a deacon and Sunday school teacher. Even though he spent his last 12 years in Charlotte, NC, surrounded by his loving family, he loved to reminisce about his youth, family life and career in Hartsville, his beloved hometown. Our thanks go to Anniel Lorig and also to the staff of Southminster for their loving care. Dr. Timmons graduated from University of South Carolina with a BS degree in Pharmacy. He then received his medical degree from the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston in 1945. He served his internship at Jersey City Medical Center in 1945-1946 and then entered the Army Medical Corps and served in Korea for two years. He took residency training in diseases of the eye, ear, nose and throat at Duke University Medical Center in 1949-1952 and was an instructor in 1963 in the Department of Ophthalmology at Duke Medical School. He met his wife Jane, a social worker, at Duke. He entered private practice in Hartsville in 1954, specializing in diseases of the eye, ear, nose and throat. Dr. Timmons had served as Chief of Staff at Byerly Hospital, was a past president of the United Way of Hartsville, and had been active with the Red Cross and Kiwanis Club. He enjoyed his friends at the Second Thursday Club and his golfing buddies. Surviving are his wife of 60 years, Jane Lovelace Timmons of Charlotte, NC; daughters and sons-in-law, Martha Timmons (Thomas Michael) Fedell of Charlotte, NC, Janie Timmons (Dr. Gary Lachman) Levinson of Charlotte, NC; sister-in-law, Sarah C. Timmons of Hartsville, SC; grandsons, Ryan Fedell of Charlotte, NC, Jason Fedell of Arlington, VA, Robert Fedell of Charlotte, NC; step-grandsons and spouse, Jack (Alison) Levinson of Charlotte, NC, Stuart (Jennifer) Levinson of Boston, MA, Eric Levinson of Charlotte, NC. His brothers, Dr. George L. Timmons and Christian L. Timmons, preceded him in death.

Bobby Winburn, Sr.

November 24th, 1950 - August 30th, 2010

Funeral services for Bobby Eugene Winburn, Sr., 59, will be held at 4:00 p.m. Wednesday, September 1, 2010 at the Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Johnny Quick will officiate with burial in Gainey Cemetery. The family will receive friends Tuesday, August 31, 2010 from 5-7 p.m. at the funeral home. Mr. Winburn died Sunday, August 29, 2010. Born in Chesterfield Co., SC, he was a son of the late Frank and Mildred Gainey Winburn, Sr. Surviving are his wife, Teresa Dixon Winburn; son, Bobby Winburn; daughter, LaChelle Easterling; sister, Genease Healther; brothers, Frank Winburn, Jr., William Winburn, Benny Winburn; granddaughters, Taylor Easterling, Carlee Easterling, Kayla Easterling, all of Hartsville, SC

Paula Lowe

February 17th, 1935 - August 29th, 2010

Graveside services for Paula Ruth Smith Lowe, 75, will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, September 1, 2010 at Swift Creek Baptist Church Cemetery. The Rev. David Deming and Pastor Dan Blake will officiate and Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home is serving the family. The family will receive friends Tuesday, August 31, 2010 from 5-7 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation (MMRF), 383 Main Avenue, 5th Floor, Norwalk, CT 06851, or the Leukemia Society of America SC Chapter, 261 B Riverchase Way, Lexington, SC 29072. Mrs. Lowe was a member of Swift Creek Baptist Church. She received her Associate Degree in Business Administration from Columbia Commercial College and was a retired bookkeeper at Lowes, Inc. She was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother, and she will be greatly missed. Mrs. Lowe died Sunday, August 29, 2010. Born in Darlington Co., SC, she was a daughter of the late James Robert Smith and Pauline Ballard Smith Scheppner. Surviving are her husband, William Lawrence “Billy” Lowe, Sr. of Hartsville; daughter and son-in-law, Paulette Lowe (Daniel Lea "Dan") Blake of Hartsville, SC; sons and daughters-in-law, William Lawrence (Cindy Shoemake) Lowe, Jr. of Hartsville, SC, Robert Randolph "Randy" (Lori Sims) Lowe of Hartsville, SC; grandsons, William Lawrence "Lance" Lowe, III of Hartsville, SC, David Tyler Lowe of Hartsville, SC, William Seth Lowe of Hartsville, SC.

Woodrow Wilson Newsom

November 11th, 1912 - August 30th, 2010

Woodrow Wilson Newsom, 97, formerly of West Carolina Avenue, Hartsville, died August 30, 2010, at National Health Care in Columbia. Born November 11, 1912, in McBee, S.C., he was the son of the late John B. and Melita K. Newsom. Mr. Newsom was employed for 42 years by Sonoco Products Company and was a long time member of the Old Timers Club. He was a loyal member of West Hartsville Baptist Church where he served as Deacon and usher for many years. At the time of his death, he was the church’s oldest member. A devoted, loving and gentle father, he is survived by two daughters, Nancy Kathryn Suggs and her husband, Chuck Ellis, of Cary, N.C. and Judy Ann Shillinglaw of Montreat, NC; a son, Woodrow Clark Newsom and his wife, Tudy, of Sumter. He is also survived by a special niece, Mary Frances Stewart. An avid Gamecock fan, he was frequently stopped by passing friends who spotted him working his garden in his Carolina cap. Babies adored him. All babies, but especially his eight grandchildren, Becky, Fran, Joni, Ginny, Christy, Robert, Kate and Wesley, his fifteen great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandson. He was predeceased by his loving wife of 60 years, Nancy Clark Newsom; three sisters, Hallie Brown, Lucy King, and Gillette Newsom; two sons-in-law, Tom Suggs and Ben Shillinglaw. The family offers special thanks to the dedicated and kind care of the staff at National Health Care, Parklane Road, Columbia. Memorials may be made to West Hartsville Baptist Church, 1003 W. Carolina Ave., Hartsville, SC 29550. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, September 1, 2010, at 2:00 p.m. at West Hartsville Baptist Church with burial in Westview Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends following the graveside service. Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home is serving the family.

Danny Tyner

Graveside services for Danny Loraine Tyner, 55, will be held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, September 2, 2010 at Mt. Olivet Baptist Church Cemetery. The Rev. Ed Griggs will officiate and Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home is serving the family. The family will receive friends following the service. Mr. Tyner died Tuesday, August 31, 2010. Born in Darlington Co., SC, he was a son of Loraine H. (Margaret G.) Tyner and Opal Byrd Tyner. Surviving are his wife, Sherry Hunt Tyner of Hartsville, SC; sons and daughter-in-law, Tommy and Regina Tyner of Hartsville, SC, Troy Tyner of Hartsville, SC; father and stepmother of Hartsville, SC; mother, of Hartsville, SC; sisters, Cheryl Tyner of Hartsville, SC, Peggy Wilson of Hartsville, SC; brother and sister-in-law, Gerald (Opal) Tyner of Hartsville, SC; stepdaughters, Hillary Hughes of Chicago, IL, Tracee Alman of Hartsville, SC; grandchildren, Katie Tyner, Dylan Quick, Delaney Hughes.

James H. Shelley

October 12th, 1943 - September 1st, 2010

James Herbert Shelley, 66, passed away Wednesday, September 1, 2010 after fighting a courageous battle with cancer. The family will receive friends Saturday evening, September 4, at Bridgepointe, 100 Sunset Boulevard in West Columbia, 4-6 p.m. Services will be conducted at St. Luke United Methodist Church in Hartsville, SC on Sunday, September 5th at 3 p.m. The Rev. Dr. William R. Bouknight and Rev. Philip Thrailkill will officiate. Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home is serving the family. Jim was raised in Hartsville and graduated from Hartsville High School in 1961. He attended the University of South Carolina, graduating with a BA degree in English in 1965 and received his Juris Doctorate degree from the USC School of Law in 1968. While at USC, he was a member of Alpha Tau Omega Fraternity and was president of his Junior and Senior classes. He served in the US Army Reserves 1968-1975, and served as a drill sergeant. He followed in his father’s footsteps by joining Sonoco Products Company in 1969. He retired from Sonoco in 2003 as Staff Vice President of Employee Relations and Labor Counsel. He joined St. Luke United Methodist Church in 1969 and served on numerous boards and committees as well as serving as an MYF leader and Sunday School teacher. He was instrumental in founding the Hartsville YMCA and served as an officer and board chairman. In retirement he relocated from Hartsville to Columbia and continued to consult with Sonoco. In Columbia, he joined Shandon United Methodist Church and was a member of the Joy Sunday School Class. He loved his family and friends, especially his three beautiful granddaughters. He enjoyed all sports, followed the Gamecocks, and was an accomplished tennis player, biker, and swimmer. Born in Hartsville on October 12, 1943, Jim was the son of the late William Harrison Shelley and Elizabeth Garner Shelley. He is survived by his wife of 41 years, Patricia “Patti” Knight Shelley; daughters, Joy Rohrbaugh, (Rusty) of Greenville and Susan Kelley (Kevin) of Hartsville; granddaughters, Sloan and Sarah Rohrbaugh and Reese Kelley; sister, Beth Blakeney (Bill) of Hartsville; brother, Bill Shelley (Pat) of Hartsville; and nieces and nephews of whom he was very fond. Memorials may be made to Harvest Hope Food Bank, 2220 Shop Road, Columbia, SC 29201-5162, or the Oliver Gospel Mission, 1100 Taylor Street, Columbia, SC 29201-2810, or the Hartsville YMCA, 111 East Carolina Avenue, Hartsville, SC 29550-4213.

Harold David Armstrong

August 17th, 1946 - September 6th, 2010

Graveside services for Harold David Armstrong, 64, will be held at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, September 9, 2010 at Antioch Baptist Church Cemetery. The Rev. Dr. Tim McKnight will officiate and Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home is serving the family. The family will receive friends Wednesday from 5-7 p.m. at the residence, 845 W. Home Ave. Memorials may be made to the McLeod Hospice House, 1203 East Cheves St., Florence, SC 29506. Mr. Armstrong died Monday, September 6, 2010. Born in Norfolk, VA, he was a son of the late Harold C. and Betty Gregory Armstrong. He attended Lakeview Baptist Church, served for many years on the Board of the American Red Cross, helped organize the Rock Hill Relay for Life, and had a passion and was very active with the Catawba River Keepers and the Sierra Club. He retired from Hoechst-Celanese as an Environmental / Health / Safety manager and was later employed with Koch Foods. Surviving are his wife, Judy Chapman Armstrong of Hartsville, SC; son, Jason (Heather) Armstrong of Virginia Beach, VA; sister, Gail Osborne Armstrong of Raleigh, NC; brothers, Tim Armstrong and Jeff (Martha) Armstrong, both of Raleigh, NC. He was also survived by his Hartsville family; step-children, Carl (Amy) Webb of Boiling Springs, SC; Richie (April) Webb of Atlanta GA; six grandchildren; mother-in-law, Pat Atkinson; brothers-in-law, Mike (Glenda) Atkinson, David (Lisa) Atkinson, Billy (Frankie) Atkinson, Dennis (Robin) Johnson; many nieces and nephews who will miss him very much

Johnie Grover Rogers, Jr.

January 23rd, 1947 - September 6th, 2010

Graveside services for Johnnie Grover Rogers, Jr., 63, will be held at 12:00 noon. Thursday, September 9, 2010 at Gum Branch Baptist Church Cemetery. The Rev. Dr. Gary Colboch will officiate. The family will receive friends Wednesday, September 8, 2010 from 5-7 p.m. at Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home. Mr. Rogers died Monday, September 6, 2010. Born in Bishopville, SC, he was a son of the late Johnnie Grover and Dorothy Flowers Rogers, Sr. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Bishopville and was retired from Chesterfield Lumber Company. He enjoyed the outdoors, especially gardening with T.J. He enjoyed watching Whitney and Courtney play softball and enjoyed giving Emma high fives. Surviving are his wife, Margie Atkinson Rogers of Hartsville, SC; son, Michael (Ragan) Rogers of Hartsville, SC; daughter, Susan (Tommy) Conyers of Hartsville, SC; sisters, Jenny (Gregg) McCutchen of Bishopville, SC, Daisy(Doug) Moss of Beaufort, SC; grandchildren, Emma Rogers, T. J. Conyers, Whitney Conyers, Courtney Conyers.
